Spate Of Fulani Herdsmen Killings: Buhari, Miyetti Allah And The Rest Of Us

Hear our president as reported: “But the present herders, I am told, carries AK47 and people are even blaming me for not talking to them because maybe (they say) I look like one of them. There is some injustice in these aspersions.”

Did President Mohammadu Buhari actually say in Jos during his visit that it was unfair for people to accuse him of not doing enough to check the marauding killer herdsmen because he looks like them (Fulani herdsmen)? If he did, then it is very unfortunate that this country has entered “one chance” bus.

If Buhari could be concerned enough to leave Daura, Katsina state to Oyo state in 2001 to enquire why his people were being killed, shouldn’t the Plateau, Benue, Taraba and other Nigerians from other parts of the country also be concerned enough now to ask our president, “why are your people killing our people?”

Was it not the height of insensitivity for the president to blame the continued attacks and killings of innocent Nigerians on desperate politicians whom he says were taking advantage of the situation ahead of the 2019 elections? Haba, ranka de de!

Serially, our president has said different things at different times on the spate of senseless massacres across the country particularly in the Middle Belt. First, it was a connotation of “farmers and herdsmen clashes” then he shifted the blame to Gadaffi’s trained killers coming from Libya; and now in total denial blaming the killings on politicians taking advantage to make gains for the 2019 election. What else do Nigerians need as evidence that their President is completely taking sides with those who kill them?

Interestingly, the President supposedly went to commiserate with the bereaved people of Plateau only to go and defend their Fulani killer herdsmen as if the people don’t know who their attackers/killers are. Even with the confessions of the Myetti Allah in Plateau state, Buhari is still strongly defending the Fulani killer herdsmen. What else do Nigerians need as evidence that their President is completely taking sides with those who kill them?

Is the president not aware of the live television statement by Mallam Danladi Ciroma the chairman (North Central) of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders’ Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) claiming the killings were retaliatory for their lost cows? After the latest Plateau massacre, the Miyetti Allah outrightly took responsibility for the killing of over 300 people even with further threats that no one should expect peace in the entire area because they (the Fulanis) lost 300 cows.

Danladi Ciroma up till now has not been arrested by either the Police or the DSS that hurls people away at night for flimsy reasons that are more political than criminal. It is impossible for the Miyetti Allah chairman to say what he said if such was not discussed, agreed, and cleared by the top echelon of Miyetti in the state, region and even at the national level of which our president is the Grand Patron.

Mr President Sir, this is why Nigerians blame you for the spate of killings in the Middle Belta, Southwest, Southeast, South-south, and even the senseless massacres in Kaduna and Zamfara.

First you are the Commander in Chief of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, a title that confers on you the responsibility of the Chief Security Officer of the nation. How can you be so comfortable or rather unruffled as the chief security officer when people are being mercilessly massacred in a country you are presiding?

Secondly, all the service chiefs, heads of the various intelligence agencies, and the Inspector General of Police were appointed solely by you and they report directly to you. Has it not occurred to you that your appointees have by all standards proven that they are incompetent as they have failed woefully in the respective assigned responsibilities? If it has not, then you know why Nigerians are blaming you for passivity and/or complicity in this whole matter.

Remember the Minister of Defence; Mansur Dan-Ali you appointed has repeatedly stated that cattle herders have the right to graze with their cattle anywhere and that the host farmers must accommodate them. The statements of the Inspector General of Police not treating with seriousness the issue of the menace of killer herdsmen are also on record.

The Service Chiefs (your appointees also) all work under the Minister of Defence and therefore receive policy directives from him. Does anybody expect the Nigerian Armed Forces to come to the aid of the unarmed and defenceless innocent citizens of this country as long as Mansur Dan-Ali remains the Minister of Defence? Was this not what T.Y. Danjuma was referring to, when he recently asked that people should rise up to defend themselves?

Why has it become impossible for you to change the team heading the nation’s security infrastructure even with clear manifestations of incompetence or rather insincerity? In sane countries where there is democracy and a President with impeccable patriotic intents, there would have been some serious changes as a result of abysmal failure or rather incompetence of those charged with managing our security agencies except someone is saying they are deeply complicity in what is going across the country especially in the Middle Belt region.

Does it not occur to our President that by his inaction, he is saying a lot about this cattle-herder problem? By what he was quoted as saying in Jos, he simply believes that these murderous herders are innocent and are being framed by the people they killed. Okay Mr. President we believe you but who are these murderers with AK47 riffles? Please don’t also forget that Miyetti Allah admitted that it was a reprisal attack, could it be that they hire these killers to come in and fight for them? You see why Nigerians strongly believe we should start with the leadership of Miyetti Allah in Plateau, Benue, Nassarawa and even Kaduna; at least we can begin to have insight into the character and motives of these cow-for-men massacres.

As said by a public affairs analyst, in his comment on this spate of massacres particularly in the Middle Belt and Southern Kaduna, “The owners of the cows are not the poor, ubiquitous herdsmen who cater for the cows. We know that those herdsmen carry sticks and machete most of the time. But there are those who finance the business, own the cows and engage the poor herders to man the cows. These “big men” who own the cows are the ones who engage gunmen to kill and destroy anything living or non-living that threatens their business. Buhari cannot pretend not to know this. Rather than address the problem from the root, he chooses to side with his people and continues to regurgitate this puerile comment of herders-don’t-carry guns.”

The nature of this crisis is clear to everyone and the people affected are for sure no longer ready to buy this “herders-don’t-carry guns” chant of the president and the earlier he realises it the better for all of us towards mobilising to find a comprehensive solution to this problem that is gradually building up to an uncontrollable level. The Supreme Court rules in clarity on this case and going by the voided votes of APC by the highest ruling body in Nigeria it is very clear that a rerun can never be and the issue of requirements clause of 25% is not needed in PDP's case as they are the legitimate runners up in that election. Atiku heads to court as Buhari’s aide, Lauretta Onochie, fails to pay N500m, apologise

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar is set to sue an aide to President Muhammadu Buhari on Social media, Lauretta Onochie, for over N2bn as she has failed to apologise and pay him the sum of N500m after allegedly defaming his character.

Atiku’s lawyer, Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN), revealed this to our correspondent during an interview on Tuesday evening.

Ozekhome said the 48 hours given to Onochie to settle the matter out of court had lapsed.

He further stated that instead of paying the N500m and writing an apology as demanded by Atiku, the President’s aide went ahead to insult the former Vice-President again on social media.

The senior advocate said, “Of course, we are going to court because she has even aggravated the issue. She posted another comment online abusing Atiku saying that he was talking nonsense. She seems not to understand the gravity of what she has done.

“She has aggravated the matter. We shall meet in court and we practise a constitutional democracy and we are a society governed by laws. We are preparing to go to court. In my chambers, we don’t threaten people for the fun of it.

“When we say we will go to court if a demand is not meant, we stand by our words. We may even increase the lawsuit above N2bn because she has aggravated the matter.”

Atiku, who was the Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the last election, had on Sunday written a letter to Onochie accusing her of character defamation for saying on Twitter that Atiku was on a security watch list in the United Arab Emirates.

The former Vice-President subsequently asked her to publish a written apology in six national dailies and pay the sum of N500m or meet him in court where he would sue her for N2bn.

However, Onochie said on her Facebook page the next day that Atiku was a depressed man who was trying to distract her.



Attempts to reach her for comment on Tuesday proved abortive as her phone rang out.

Acting CJN dragged to court over alleged age falsification

A 46-year-old businessman, Tochi Michael, has dragged the Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Tanko Muhammad, before an FCT High Court over alleged age falsification.

In the originating summon with suit No. FCT/HC/BW/CV/79/2019, filed before the court in April, the petitioner alleged that the CJN deliberately falsified his date of birth.

Mr Michael alleged that the CJN falsified his date of birth from December 31, 1950 as contained in all his official records including that of WAEC to December 31, 1953 upon his appointment as a judicial officer.

The petitioner in the originating summon is praying the court to determine whether such act of the CJN does not constitute a criminal act of perjury, falsification and forgery.

Mr Michael in the originating summon also prayed the court to determine whether by falsifying his date of birth from December 31, 1950 to December 31, 1953 upon being appointed to Nigeria Bench as a judicial officer he has not breach the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The petitioner is also praying the court to determine whether Mr Muhammad has not breached the Code of Conduct for judicial officers and consequently brought the image of Nigeria Judiciary to a state of disrepute and odium.

The petitioner in his reliefs is praying the court for a declaration that the defendant falsified his date of birth and that the defendant has desecrated the breach of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (FRN).

He is also praying for an order directing the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to prosecute the defendant for the offence of perjury and an order which the court may deem it fit.

Counsel to the CJN, Sam Ologunorisa, SAN, informed the court that the plaintiff and his counsel were not in the court.

Mr Ologunorisa told the court that it seems the plaintiff and his counsel were “running away” from the suit they filed, stressing that the court should do the needful in the interest of justice.

“We on our part filed a notice of preliminary objection, a counter affidavit and a written address. We urge the court to deem it fit that the originating summon has been argued.

“We have to look at exhibit III of the originating summon.

“We urge the court to dismiss the suit. The case is meant to scandalise the CJN,” he argued.

Ruling on the prayers, the judge, Danlami Senchi, of the court said another opportunity would be given to the petitioner to appear in the court to prove the allegation.

Mr Senchi adjourned the matter until Friday.

He ordered that hearing notices be served on the petitioner.

The game of politics is about interest, interest ranges from that of the overall populace, a group of people, individuals etc. A close look at both the ruling APC, the Sheriff factional PDP and that of the victorious Markafi camp clearly point to the interest they all represent- The Political Elite

When you look at both the PDP and APC constitutions, they clearly tilt to favor the political elite in both parties. In fact, it is difficult (if not impossible) for an outsider to emerge candidate through a transparent process without the dictate of political gladiators or godfathers in both parties. These aspirants emerge candidates, win elections and continue to protect the same interest of the elitist group. Hence, the phrase, "All of them are the same".

Before the launch of APDA on June 5, 2017, I was of the opinion that the party is neither a PDP fall-back or a plan B for the Markafi camp, the judgement has clearly given the APDA an opportunity to affirm what they stand for as a party.

The APDA, unlike the APC and PDP, has a constitution that surrenders power to their the people. This is a party whose constitution erode delegate system to entrench direct primary system that will see all members of the party to partake in the election of party leaders, candidates and other elective representative.

The APDA as a party allows for a minimum of 25% elective and appointive slots of members of Youth age (18-35) in all public and party offices. It further state a minimum of 30% for women and 5% for people living with disabilities.

Why then should Nigeria people, youths and women continue to waste their time, resources and votes on the parties (APC, PDP) and factions (Sheriff and Markafi) that only protect the interest of the political elite at the expense of the common man?

I am very happy that PDP crises has settled and PDP political heavyweights will concentrate on their party. I am very happy that the Nigeria electorates will now have the privilege to discern that APDA as a party means business.

One truth we must tell ourselves is that, whether Markafi or Sheriff, PDP is DEAD!!! It has gone 6 feet in the Northwest, it is hopeless in the Northeast, it is the equivalent of Ebola in the Southwest, in the Southeast Nnamdi Kanu and IPOB calls the shot even when PDP controls government (due to the fact that APC is/was no option). In the Southsouth, the governments in power are as incompetent as the government at the center, the story is not different in the Northcentral.

The ruling APC has failed but the only option for Nigeria in 2019 is to embrace a party that they can be active stakeholders in determining candidates for elective positions, so as to have emergence of leaders whose loyalty will be to the Nigeria people not the political elite.

Go and read the account of one of the Benin chiefs caught during the British invasion who got angry at the Yoruba soldiers for betraying Benin after training some of them during the Kiriji war.

Ogedengbe never step foot in Benin and was never appeased,appease him for what? No tribe I repeat no tribe in Nigeria EVER won a battle against the Benin Empire. As rugged as the Ibadan warriors were they never dared Benin and as rugged as the Fulani jihaddist were they were stopped at Auchi.

Get your facts right,Ogedengbe wanted blessings and he was given to stop the Ibadan warriors who became bandits.

Even me.was curious how that part got squeezed into the Ogedengbe story. I am just hearing that too for the first time.

The Untold story of Ogedengbe
Agbogungboro of Ijesha Land 1822-1910. Wars and Generals.

The Yoruba history has so many tales of war generals, war lords, priests, kings and noble women who fought for the peace of the land, in the 100 years war period that once ravaged the land, but
the emergence of a first class warrior and
diplomat, in the person of Ogedengbe of Ilesha, is one story that will forever echo all through Yorubaland. Note this, history will recall Ogedengbe born as an ordinary man, but his life and legacy bore extra-ordinary, mystical and great acts that
made people wonder how true his story was.

Let me take you on a journey to how it all started in the year 1822. Born as Orisarayibi Ogundamola, (His passion for
leadership earned him the appellation Ogedengbe) he was born in 1822 to Apasan Borijiwa and Juola Orisatomi, and his birth according to Yoruba
history coincided with the annual Ogun festival. Aponlese 1, was the Owa of Ilesha at the time the young leader to be was born. It was customary for
the Owa during this Ogun festival to invite all the ‘babalawos’ (medicine men) in the Ijesha territory to come and predict what will be the outcome of the new year to come. It was at this meeting that one particular ‘babalawo’ predicted that on an
‘Isegun’ day in 1822 a child will born in the land and he will deliver the Ijesha people from his oppressor(s). And when the day came the Owa sent all his servants to all ‘igberikos’ and as predicted by the ‘babalawo’, Ogedengbe was the only baby
that was said to be seen born on that day.

After the naming ceremony, he was carried from his father’s house in Ijoka Ilesha to Atorin his mother’s village, about 24 kilometres away from Ilesha township. History has it that Atorin, towards the end of the 18th century consisted of only six to eight huts and an average estimation of 40 people. Cut away from the Ijesha town, Atorin was a very poor village with a tiny connecting route to Ilesha town.
Because of the circumstance surrounding his birth and the plan of the Owa to keep a close eye on the young Ijesha saviour, it was said that he was pampered and loved by his parents, and he was
still breast-feeding at the age of seven. Growing up, the young Ogedengbe was a rascal, known for his rude attitude towards old people and he had
the very strange habit of calling his parents by their first name with no care. Such was his wild behaviour until the age of fifteen when he went on a voluntary exile, because of the personal assault
he encountered with a woman called ‘Salakenu’ a villager in Atorin reputable for her witchcraft. He later fled to Ilesha where he was received by his father and close associate.

Due to his rascal attitude and restlessness, he found a common cause with a popular age group called the “Ipaye” which had an age range of 15-24years. At 17, Ogedengbe was elected the deputy leader of the group. As a socio-political unit in Ilesha then, the “Ipaye” were responsible for cutting and fixing public buildings like the Palace, the shrine, Market stalls, building and repairing of roads and making
sure order was in the town then. It was from this group Ogedengbe was catapulted into political limelight.

At about the age of 35, around 1857, Ogedengbe decided to get married to a beautiful young Ijesha girl called “Orisaleke” but the parents of the girl
opposed the marriage, simply because of
Ogedengbe’s lifestyle, which was considered wild and reckless then. Ogedengbe being who he was, took the girl from her parents house damning the
consequences. The matter was later reported to the Owa, and Ogedengbe was sentenced to three months in prison.

After his release, quite a number of incidents sprung up that turned the young Ijesha man into a full war general. Not only that, but one of the greatest in Yoruba land. One was the liberation of
villages surrounding Ekiti (Efon,Itaawure, and Oke-Mesi) from their Ibadan oppressor, and also the 1867 attack on Igbajo by llesha and a reverse
attack on Ilesha by Ibadan which forced the collapse of the Ijesha army and the flight of Ogedegbe to Ita-Ogbolu.
And as time went on, his powers and popularity were growing fast. Apart from his reckless,diplomatic and commanding leadership, Ogedengbe was also said to have possessed great magical powers which came into full limelight during and after the Ekitiparapo war. His encounters with Ibadan also proved the general in him.

The first was in 1864 when he was captured
while assisting in the defence of Ilara against the Ibadan troops, and the second time was in 1867 when he was captured during the Igbajo war. It was during this war a young Ibadan soldier severed Ogedengbe’s head off during the war, and the Ijesha general staggered back, rolled, picked up the fallen head and fixed it back on his body. This made his enemies terrified of his person. After this incident, he was captured by Ibadan’s own
General Bashorun Ogunmola, who decided to humiliate Ogedengbe by disfiguring his face with Ibadan tribal marks, hoping someone will later take him for an Ibadan man and kill him, but this didn’t happen. Ogedengbe learnt a lot of military tactics, secrets and trainings while in captive in Ibadan. These two occasions brought out the “general” in Ogedengbe.

During the Ekitiparapo war, it was said that Ogedengbe would stay in his house and fire arrows from his room to the battle field, he was also known for his random disappearing acts which made him difficult to kill by his enemies. Ogedengbe and his comrades Ekitiparapo Army
Known for his diplomatic and charismatic attitude, he was also a fond addict of the native sniff called “tabaa”. Being a war general, he didn’t trust people for the fear of being poisoned, so most times he normally sent his dog on errands to
the market. At that time in Ilesha, the sight of the dog was abnormal because no one had ever seen a dog as tall and huge like that before. Eye witness account says the dog was similar to a wild beast, while walking on the road, people ran at the
sight of the dog. He normally tied a sack of cowries and samples of what he wants to buy around the dogs neck, and the dog goes to the market and walks straight to the ‘Iya loja’s’ tent. The ‘Iya loja’ is the female head chief of the market. The woman unties the rag around the dog’s neck, fills it with the required goods and the dog returns to its owner. And as the dog returns to its owner, the house owner of every house it passes must greet the dog saying “ L’o gun ofe oooo”. Any house owner that doesn’t salute the dog will be reported to Ogedengbe.
Mysteriously the dog disappeared after
Ogedengbe died.

After the Ekitiparapo war and the great trouble periods in the history of Yoruba land, Ogedengbe settled back in Ilesha, but his band of war boys could not contain themselves to the new peaceful
atmosphere, they went raiding people, harassing and kidnapping innocent citizens. This prompted Captain R.L Bower to arrest the war general in 1894 with his friend Prince Fabunmi, the Owa of Ilesha. Frederick Haastrup pleaded passionately for the release of Ogedengbe and after much begging to Governor Carter he was
released after a lengthy sum of £6,000.00 was posted for his bail. Ogedengbe was conferred with a chieftaincy title
of Obanla of Ilesha in 1898, thus the highest mark for his gallant achievements in the Kiriji/Ekitiparapo war. The restless, reckless and powerful Ogedengbe now after so many years of war and fights, now became a respectable chief and his service was now to the people. Ogedengbe died in 1910. Orisarayibi Ogundamola also known as Ogedengbe.

Ogedengbe was no doubt one of the greatest war generals that ever lived in Yoruba land. His great wisdom and diplomatic war-like manners saw the
Yorubas through the Ekitiparapo war. A real war master, his study of war tactics and war weaponry was second to none. A straight-forward man who always kept to his promises. The Ijesha people will forever continue to cherish his memory. A cenotaph was erected for him at the Obokungbusi Town Hall. And the Ogedengbe Memorial School in Ilesha is a monumental masterpiece in his memory. Till this day, he remains the greatest warrior in Ijesha land, Hence this praise song

“ Gbogungboro lo l’oke Anaye
Odidi omo afodidi gun;

Odidi omo afodidi digun;
Ayanmode baba ogbe odidi omo afodi digun.

Translation:
It is the war lord who owns Anaye

Profile: Ogedengbe was a personality to behold a true character that made history and defines culture right from his early age to adulthood. He was a proud, courageous and confident Ijesa, although extremely difficult, he had a
true and genuine love for his town and people. Ogedengbe was a
no-nonsense man nor was he afraid of anyone. He was fearless, always willing and ready to fight or attack anyone
who dares to challenge him and would not stop until the end. Ogedengbe had fame, charisma, wisdom and knowledge
and was the ultimate icon of his time. Men want to be him and women want to be his wife.

The late Chief Ogedengbe Agbogubgboro, the Generalissimo of
Ekiti Army was born at Atorin, a village about twenty
kilometres from Ilesha in the now Atakomosa East Local
Government areas. This was his mother's village; his father's
village was Oke-Orisa which is about the same distance from
Ilesha and in the same present day Local Government areas as
Atorin.
Before Ogedengbe was born, the Ifa oracle predicted that he
was going to be the saviour of Ijeshaland. The name given to Ogedengbe at birth was SARAIBI. He was born as a normal child and he grew up at Atorin as a healthy industrous young man. From the early years of his life, it became clear that he was very strong and surpassed all his
mates in acts of valour, whenever he engaged in wrestling with
his mates, he always floored them, hence the name
"OGEDENGBE". In adulthood, Ogedengbe engaged in several
campaigns against the Ibadan people who were oppressing and
attacking the Ijesha people. During one of such campaigns, he
was captured and taken to Ibadan.
It was on this occassion the Ibadan people put tribal marks on
his face before releasing him. He fought in the Ibadan army
until he became a senior military commander and then returned
to fight and lead the Ijesha forces. After this, he gathered a
large army of Ijesha young men and engaged in several bitter

Ogedengbe exploits also took him to Ekiti and Akoko areas where he sold a lot of them into slavery. This was why he was
often referred to as "O soko Ekiti soko Akoko". He also went as
far as the present day Edo state. The Oba of Benin had to appease him before he desisted from waging war against his
domain. He gave Ogedengbe presents of beads, slaves and other valuable articles.
After this exploit, Ogedengbe returned to Igbara-Oke intending to settle down there. This was the time when the
Ibadan people engaged the Ijeshas and the Ekitis in a fierce war at Oke-Imesi. The leaders of the Ijeshas and the Ekitis
had to persuade Ogedengbe to come and lead them as his unrivalled exploits had become a legend in the whole of Yoruba
land. He agreed and went to the battle field to check the
inordinate ambition of the Ibadan people.
The fighting went on for about nine years . It was Captain Bower, the then resident commissioner at Ibadan who finally
settled the war by a treaty in 1886 (23rd September, 1886) after he had won the war. It was due to all these attributes that he possessed that made him into a local hero in his town.

Ogedengbe subsequently became one of the most important men in the history of Yorubaland, Nigeria and Africa, hence
the name ‘OGEDENGBE AGBOGUNGBORO’ meaning
‘ OGEDENGBE THE WARRIOR’
It began in the 19th century, a century of revolution in Yorubaland, after the fall of the old Oyo Empire due to
political crisis. Ibadan, a new city founded in the 1820s wanted to dominate and rule the rest of the Yorubaland and as result,
there were wars among the kingdoms of the Yorubas. In particular the Kiriji war (also known as the sixteen years war)
which started in 1877, it involved the struggle for power,
influence and survival. The Ibadan on declared ‘a war to end all wars’ on the Egba on Monday, 30th July 1877, the Kiriji war officially begun. The Ijebu joined and it began to spread. In 1878, it spread to the east, the Ekiti and Ijesa countries
became united and formed an alliance known as Ekiti-parapo
(the combined forces of the Ijesa and Ekiti) which was led by Ogedengbe of Ilesha . The Ife and Ilorin later joined. Ibadan now had a string of foes that were ready to fight for their independence and also to free themselves from Ibadan
imperialism.

During the war, in order to ensure close
relationship between the families competing for power, dynastic
marriages were a common phenomenon
amongst the Yoruba Kingdom –
especially among the Ekiti ruling
houses. Ogedengbe, the Ijesa and
Ekiti-parapo war hero, had wives from
various parts of Yorubaland for the
purpose of cementing political, and
invariably, war alliances. It is believed
that Ogedengbe had over 99 wives from
various parts of Yorubaland. The king
of Ila, for instance, sent him his
daughter to prevent an attack on his
town. Ogedengbe himself also gave his
daughters in marriage to notable
personalities from other parts of
Yorubaland.

History has it that during the war, Ogedengbe was totally beheaded but he cheated death in a miraculous way. His
headless body simply walked towards his head, he picked it up and fitted his head back on. This event, although very real and
true but yet unbelievable, made his enemies even more terrified of him. For they believed that what could possibly kill Ogedengbe if the beheadings did not send him off to his grave.

This is why up till today , the house of Ogedengbe symbol is a sword to remind us all of the time the brave warrior was
beheaded with a sword and still survived the attack. This attempt on his life enraged him and offered Ogedengbe a new lease of life to defeat all his enemies.
For a time Ogedengbe of Ilesha, the legendary warlord, even
terrorised the Yorubaland extending his ravages to Benin territory, capturing towns and enslaving its inhabitants. The
kiriji war was the last war among the Yorubas and it lasted for
sixteen years. It was bought to a halt by British administration in Lagos, which produced the June 1886 Treaty and the
proclamation of peace in Yorubaland. Although the peace
treaty was ready in June, it could not be signed and sealed and
the stalement continued until the Yoruba traditional ceremony (ritual) of ending a war was held at the appointed place on the
battlefield.

The war did not actually end until 1892. As a result of this war, Ibadan failed to build a lasting empire and provide unity
for the Yorubas. In 1986, a hundred years after the Kiriji war, a reconnaissance
trip was made to the site of the signing of the peace treaty. The trip was part of an academic conference organised to
mark the centenary of the Ekiti-parapo Peace. The teams’ discovery is illuminating on the Yoruba approach to peacemaking and peace enforcement. First, it was observed that war termination involved boundary adjustment. The planting of a peculiar plant, the dracaena perennial tree, delineated new boundaries (Yoruba word: peregun). At the Ekiti-parapo peace site, the two-peregun trees planted over a
hundred years ago still proudly stand demarcating the Ibadan-Ekitiparapo territories and reminding all sides to the
conflict of the cessation of hostilities.

The greatest advantages of the peregun tree are its perennial features. It
is not easily destroyed by fire, it survives droughts and it sprouts quickly if accidentally cut. In addition, among the
Yoruba, a taboo is built around the tree: it must not be uprooted and wherever peregun stands is considered sacred. In
essence, a sense of permanence and inviolability is built around Yoruba peace treaties. The war prowess of the Ijesa military under the command of
the great Ogedengbe were to be commended, for without their
ferocious involvement in the Kiriji war and other battles, many parts of the Yoruba land would have been permanently subservient to Oyo and other more powerful Kingdoms. Other notable war heroes of the 19th century that displayed bravery were Fabunmi of Oke-Imesi, Oluyole, Ibikunle and Ogunmola of
Ibadan, Onafowokan of Ijebu, Sodeke of Egba etc.

After the final settlement of the KIRIJI war, Ogedengbe returned back to Ilesha to settle down. Although there were one or two incidents such as being taken to Iwo for a short period between 1896 to 1898. On the whole Ogedengbe's home coming was relatively peaceful.

Ogedengbe-led Ilesa forces were given a hero welcome back home and Ogedengbe himself was rewarded for his stance,
bravery and heroism during the war, he was honoured with a royal title of “OBANLA OF IJESHALAND" also known as
"OBA-ALA OF ILESHA" (meaning THE "MIGHTY" KING OF IJESHALAND). A respectably earned title, truely deserving of a brave warrior. OBA-ALA OF ILESHA is the highest chieftaincy title in
Ijeshaland making OGEDENGBE the second in command and rank to the monarch, OWA-OBOKUN OF IJESHALAND .
Ogedengbe also had his own palace known as the Oba-Ala palace at Okesa street , Ilesa which is a stone throw away from
the Owa’s (King) palace. The shape of his palace is round, a letter ‘O’ shape to signify the first letter of his name –
OGEDENGBE Although, OWA is the ultimate decision-maker in Ilesha, no law
can actually be passed on the land without prior consultation with the OBANLA (Oba-Ala).

History has it that none of Ogedengbe’s descendant have actually being crowned OWA (King), as Ogedengbe himself was
a KINGSMAKER (Afobaje) rather than a king. For example, it was because of Ogedengbe that Ilesa never introduced two Agunlejikas during his reign.
The Ijesha people wanted to make him the Owa at one stage, but he refused. In the end, he was installed as the OBANLA OF
IJESHALAND in 1898.

It is also important to note that this chieftaincy title was specially created for Ogedengbe to show Ijeshas gratitude as
they felt greatly indebted towards him. No other person/s has ever been bestowed with such title before him. This is why up till today; the OBA-ALA of ILESHA chieftaincy title is more likely to be awarded to an Ogedengbe as a mark of respect for the Great Ogedengbe himself. In the past, Ilesha’s worthy personalities other than Ogedengbe’s descendant had been awarded the OBA-ALA OF ILESHA title but when an Ogedengbe is bestowed with this title, it becomes known as
“OBA-ALA OGEDENGBE OF ILESHA” .
Ogedengbe of Ilesha was crowned the OBA-ALA OGEDENGBE
OF ILESHA I, after the kiriji war. Chief Saraibi Ogedengbe lived peacefully thereafter until he died on the 29th July, 1910.

The sky rocked and thundered (3 times) to show that a great warrior had passed away. He was buried at his palace and his
descendants have since carried on with the great legacy the Legendary Yoruba warrior left behind. His first son, Ogunleye later became the Oba-Ala Ogedengbe
of Ilesha ll. Ogedengbe’s grandson, Stephen Olusesan became the Oba-Ala Ogedengbe of Ilesha lll – all are now of blessed memory. All the Oba-Ala Ogedengbe of Ilesha are buried at
the Oba-Ala’s palace at Okesa Street, Ilesha.

In Nigeria today, Ogedengbe ’s name is synonymous with Ilesa (his town) or the word ‘ Agbogungboro’ (Yoruba word meaning‘The Warrior’ ). He was an icon during his days and his greatness is still felt and present up till today. Ogedengbe was without a doubt a big celebrity, whom today is referred to as an inspiration to young men. His statue can still be seen as you enter the city of Ilesha, which was erected as a permanent memorial to him.
The people of Ijesha always says that "The day Ogedengbe died, God shot gun throughout Nigeria (Ojo ti Ogedengbe ku,
Olorun yon ibon)" Ogedengbe Agbogungboro – you will never be forgotten and your greatness and legendary will surely reign forever.

Wike accuses GOC of engaging in illegal bunkering in Rivers

Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike on Wednesday accused the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 6 Division of the Nigerian Army, Major General Jamil Sarhem of promoting in oil theft in the Niger Delta region.

Governor Wike made the allegation when he played host to the commander Joint Task Force (JTF), “Operation Delta Safe, Real Admiral Akinjide Akinrinade during a courtesy visit to the State House.

The Governor in a statement by his Personal Assistant on Electronic Media, Simeon Nwakudu, accused Major General Sarham of operating an illegal oil bunkering squad to enable him finance his ambition to be appointed the Chief of Army Staff.

Wike said: “The GOC is doing illegal bunkering, which he is using to finance his quest to emerge as the country’s Chief of Army Staff.

“He has his own team that is making money for him through oil bunkering”.

He accused the GOC of compromising security in Rivers State through illegal actions.

“We will have a security meeting and he will release the details to criminals. And the Chief of Army Staff will leave the man here because he is playing their role.

“How will security of the state be with such a man as the GOC? He will compromise when fighting to reduce crime, they sent us a GOC who destroy the security architecture of the state”.

The governor wondered what the JTF Operation Delta Safe would do when they encounter the illegal oil bunkering team of the GOC.

He recalled how the people of the state bravely stopped the GOC and his accomplices from imposing a Governor during the elections.

“A man came to plot coup. The people resisted him for plotting coup. You want to impose a party that has no candidate for National Assembly and State Assembly elections on the people.

“How will such a party win the Governorship election? A party that nobody has seen their posters? Rivers people said no.

“He has result sheets. Let him bring the result sheets to the tribunal. Army now has result sheets. That is now part of their mandate “.

Governor Wike assured the visiting JTF Commander that the State will support their operations to ensure that they defend the Niger Delta, especially the State.

He said: “Anybody who wants to help us fight crime, I will support. I will never support those involved in illegal refineries”.

Real Admiral Akinrinade thanked Wike for the supply of gunboats, security vehicles and finances for security operations in the area.

He assured him that the Joint Task Force will not relent in fighting crime in the State.

He noted that the troop has recorded successes in the protection of oil and gas facilities and the maintenance of internal security in the area.

He appealed to leaders to engage youths to shun crime and criminality for the development of the state.

Alarm: Yoruba forests host 1,123 cells of armed Fulani herdsmen--Oodua group

Ibadan May 14, 2019 FOR IMMEDIATE PUBLIC RELEASE..

There are exactly 1,123 cells belonging to armed Fulani herdsmen mainly in forests and highlands located across Yoruba territories.
The cells are well organized and they appear to network with each other.
The mission of the cells are unknown except that there have been increase in the preponderance of their organization skill.
They appear to have lately adopted martial training in these cells. Some of the Fulani armed herdsmen speak French suggesting the Franco-African origin of some of them.

In a media release on Tuesday, Apapo Oodua Koya, (AOKOYA) said the cells are manned by between 30 to 50 young armed Fulani herdsmen whose focus is kidnapping and rape and the imposition of siege, a state of fear and anomie across Yorubaland.
AOKOYA, a coalition of several Pan Yoruba self-determination groups including Yoruba Nationalist League, (YONL) Association of Yoruba Retired Officers, (AYORO), Federation of Ilaje Peoples, (FEIP), Itsekiri Peoples Alliance, (IPA), Oodua Peoples Congress, (OPC), Oodua Revolutionary Coalition, (OREC), Agbekoya, Oodua Students Alliance, (OSA) and many others said the study was conducted over a period of six months using some of the best intelligence gathering equipment.
It further said that satellite images have been personally submitted to State Governors in the South West and some traditional rulers.
The group said “We have taken our time to do an intelligence survey using modern equipment and google mapping with elementary satellite imaging to know the number of armed cells established and controlled by the Fulani herdsmen spread across Yoruba territories of Kwara, Kogi, Lagos, Ondo, Oyo, Osun, Ogun, Ekiti and Itsekiri part of Delta State. Our findings are shocking. There are 1, 123 cells run by armed Fulani militia. The cells are populated with Fulani armed men. Some of them are in military uniforms and in some instances we find young girls cooking for the men”, the release signed by the Secretary for Strategy of the group, United States-based Col Abimbola Sowunmi and Deputy Secretary for Publicity, Mr Ismail Abiodun said.
AOKOYA also said that its intelligence report indicate that many Yoruba rich are being kidnapped in silence.
“We discovered that many Yoruba rich men and women are being kidnapped and they are compelled to pay ransom. It is traditional that many of them fear to speak out and in cases where rape of women are involved, the victims are too traumatised to speak out.

"The Yoruba rich suffer in silence. They are raped. They are so traumatized to speak out. We reveal with pain in our hearts that the proprietor of a very big Petrol Filling station in Yoruband one of the finest Yoruba business woman was kidnapped. She paid a lot of money.
Another woman, Mrs who runs an Industry with speciality in ethanol was kidnapped near Ayede in Ekiti state..She has since relocated to London. AOKOYA representatives have met some of these victims who have given confidential information.

Another very rich woman in Abeokuta was kidnapped late last year on her way to Lagos. She was kept for two weeks. She paid a huge sum as ransom. The wife of a prominent Pastor in Lagos was seized in February this year on her way to Akure in Ondo State. She infact paid 25 million to be free. Students of many of the highbrow private Universities are victims. They know their parents and the students.

The Fulani herdmen threaten them that their children would be killed if they report to the police.
AOKOYA said students of Afe Babalola University, Babcock and Covenant Universities are prime targets.
"It added that wives of traditional rulers are also targets. They are so scared to report to the authorities.”
In one instance, Yoruba billionaire, Bode Akindele was accosted on Ibadan-Lagos Highway. He managed to escape.
We observe that they operate with intelligence networking with some contacts within the state security services that provide information for them and through an extensive network involving Maiguards.
They go out to mosques on Fridays and churches in Sundays where they target and trail owners of exotic cars to their private homes from where they station agents who act as Okada riders but who in actual fact monitor the movement of these people.
" Its a sophisticated network that has recently succeded in breaking into network of some banks in order to know the rich and trace the addresses provided in those bank details.

AOKOYA said Denying these facts will not help Yorubaland, the issue is to rise up to the challenge and confront headlong.
AOKOYA said it does not expect the authorities in Yorubaland to accept these reports but that events in the few months ahead will confirm the veracity as the Fulani herdsmen are poised to be on greater rampage.
“They have four strategies that have helped them. The first is that they maintain the purity of the Fulani control of the kidnap ring.

This has its own strength and weakness. It makes it difficult for penetration by the state or the host communities so as not to discover their modus.
On the other hand of its advantage, it nullifies the potential of locals getting involved in kidnapping.
Given the degree of poverty in the land, this is an advantage because the Yoruba youths adopting kidnapping as a means of survival will lead to greater social uprising.

The Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, on Monday said he has no apology over his comment last week that “godfather can be defeated” in Lagos State.

The governor further said he is unfazed by the criticisms that have followed the comment.

Mr El-Rufai had at a forum organised by the Bridge Club prescribed steps to curbing godfatherism in politics. He said he had retired four political godfathers in Kaduna. He also suggested how to retire godfathers in Lagos politics.

Observers quickly analysed the governor’s remarks as an attack on former Lagos governor Bola Tinubu, regarded as the godfather of Lagos politics.

That Mr El-Rufai’s comment followed a question by Muiz Banire, a Lagos politician believed to be feuding with Mr Tinubu, fueled the conclusion that Mr El-Rufai was targeting the former Lagos governor.

Mr Tinubu is the national leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress, the same party to which Mr El-Rufai belongs.

Two public commentators in The Nation newspaper owned by Mr Tinubu, Sam Omatseye and Gbenga Omotoso, among others, have attacked Mr El-Rufai in separate opinion pieces published by the newspaper.

But speaking after meeting President Muhammadu Buhari at the State House on Monday, Mr El-Rufai said he was unperturbed by the criticisms and has no apology for his views.

Referring to Mr Tinubu, he said, “We are in the same party. We get along very well as far as I am concerned. I don’t know if he is the godfather of Lagos.”

He then restated what he had said in the past week: “What I know for sure is that we have retired godfathers in Kaduna and I have told those that asked the question that there are six million voters in Lagos. And only one million voted in the last elections.”

He continued, “So, there are five million people you can bring to the electoral playground and you can defeat anyone if you work hard. But it’s hard work, it’s four years. That’s what I said. If anyone feels offended by that; that’s his business, not my business.

“I have no apology. I don’t apologise for my views. I don’t need to explain anything to anyone. This is a democracy. There must be room for people to express their views.”

Sanusi: An Emir and the Making of a Diminished Emirate

He is flamboyant. He is suave. He is cosmopolitan. And he attended the best schools and even attained the pinnacle of his career as a banker. At a time, atop the nation’s biggest bank, First Bank, and one time Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). But even with a glowing career and influence that would make many of his age green with envy, His Royal Highness, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, had always had an ambition: to ascend the throne of his forefathers. Even when the odds suddenly became stacked against him, he realised his ambition on June 9, 2014. He is king over forty-four local governments in Kano State. At least, until Tuesday last week, when Governor Abdullahi Ganduje assented to the bill splitting the Emirate Council into five. Implication: Sanusi will have his kingdom divided into five! With rumours of outright deposition renting the air, Samuel Ajayi traces the travails of the embattled monarch and looks at the irony of those who saw to his ascension now determined to see his back…

Sanusi and the Coronation Hall ‘Invaders’…
Shortly after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced that Abdullahi Ganduje, the controversial governor of Kano State, had won a second term in an equally controversial re-run election, his supporters went into a wild frenzy. They were very happy and made for Coronation Hall of Government House, Kano, with a ladder. They made to where photographs were hung on the wall and removed that of the Emir of Kano, His Royal Highness, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi.

It was the beginning of the current travails of the former top banker in the hands of a governor who himself is scandal personified. But it didn’t start after the elections even if the manifestation came then. Sometime in the summer of 2017, Sanusi, going by feelers from the state government, knew there was trouble. The state anti-graft agency had started looking into the books of the Emirate Council and was almost concluding that certain things were untidy. Sanusi was also accused of having the “effrontery” to send his daughter to represent him at a function in Abuja. It was not known if this was against tradition or not in an ultra-conservative society.


Beyond that, however, the fact that Sanusi, a former top banker with First Bank and erstwhile governor of CBN, was being investigated for mismanagement of funds was enough embarrassment. It was inconsequential if he was guilty or not.
Prominent northerners intervened and his blushes were saved. If Sanusi thought those who wanted to do him in would relent after 2017, he was wrong.

Aide Grilled…
The Kano State government’s anti-graft agency two Thursdays ago grilled Isa Bayero, a former aide to the embattled Emir. Bayero is not new to royalty and the rumbles that go with it. He was one time chief aide to Ado Bayero, Sanusi’s predecessor. He had told newsmen about his invitation and subsequent appearance before the Kano Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission.

He stated, “When I appeared before the investigating panel, I was presented with some documents which I went through and I requested for more time to study and return them.”
In a rehash or dusting up of the rule book of the 2017 attempted drag in the mud, Governor Abdullahi Ganduje signed a bill into law breaking up the Kano emirate into five. The journey to the signing of the new law started when a petition that was sent to the Kano State House of Assembly was curiously given expeditious attention and consideration.
A couple of weeks back, one Ibrahim Salisu had sent a petition to the Kano State House of Assembly. What did he want? Simple. Or so it seemed. He wanted some traditional rulers to be upgraded from just District Heads to first class Emirs. These were Karaye, Bichi, Rano and Gaya. In doing that, the Assembly would have to split the Kano Emirate into five.


Ordinarily, one would have expected that such petition would be thrown into the trash can, but it was not; obviously, the petitioner was probably not acting on his own. If the Emirate was split, Sanusi would be left to be Emir over just 10 local governments from 44!
Even if the bill was submitted by a member of the Assembly, it would not have received the kind of speedy attention the legislature gave the petition. Within 24 hours, it had been passed and the Kano Emirate Council, as it was known, was to be no more. Sanusi would not be the only emir again. And within 36 hours of receiving the passed bill, Ganduje assented to it and it became a law.

Respite from the Courts…
While Sanusi was still wondering what must have befallen him, a Kano High Court came to his rescue Friday afternoon. What the lawmakers had done, and which Ganduje assented to, was to amend the Kano State Chieftaincy and Local Government Law to create the additional four emirate councils. Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lawmakers in the state had claimed that the Assembly was not properly convened to sit over the petition that requested the amendment of the law. They claimed that Majority Leader Baffa Danagundi read the report of the committee, which was set up the day the petition was received. Danagundi claimed there was “wide consultation” with stakeholders and what they found out was that there was need to upgrade the traditional rulers. The new law, Emir Appointment and Deposition Bill 2019, was passed all with 48 hours of receiving the petition that ‘demanded’ for this.
Now, the courts have restrained the governor or the House of Assembly from implementing the break-up of the Kano Emirate Council. Perhaps, the government will obey the court order.

Wittingly or Unwittingly Helping a ‘Political Cause’…
Sanusi had a very distinguished and flowery career as a banker. He rose to the top as the managing director of Nigeria’s foremost bank, First Bank, and from there he became the governor of the CBN. He had succeeded Chukwuma Soludo, a professor, who was accused of not being able to wield the big stick against banks who were cooking up their books.
Sanusi came in and walked his talk. Within a couple of years, some banks had gone under and some merged and bank managing directors who had been living large off depositors’ funds were brought to face the music. From almost 100, the nation’s banks were reduced to 25. Strong 25. Sanusi was working and whenever he coughed, bank executives caught not just cold but also flu.


Even when he was doing this, he never hid his ambition to become the Emir of Kano, his native land and an ancient city where his grandfather once held sway as Emir. Many would have been wondering what Sanusi was looking for in life again, having risen to the pinnacle of his career as a banker. But ambition is ambition and at times it defies logic.

While Sanusi was nursing his ambition, some major political changes were going on in the country. Some political groups, parties and sectional interests were coming together and negotiating the formation of a mega party that would challenge the behemoth called PDP for power at the centre. Perhaps, these political groups and interests had come to the realisation that the reason the PDP had been riding to easy victory at the polls was because the opposition had been fragmented. The consultations mainly between Senator Bola Tinubu’s Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), General Mohammadu Buhari’s Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), and the remnants of the now defunct All Nigeria Peoples Congress (ANPP), and a section of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) eventually led to the birth of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on July 31, 2013. While Sanusi was not openly seen as being part of this new political development, those sympathetic to former President Goodluck Jonathan said he was one of the major financiers of the party. Though this seemed far-fetched, events that unfolded in early October 2013 tended to strengthen the hands of those who held that view.

Then Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Mrs. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, a professor and former World Bank Managing Director, had received a call from the then CBN governor about a letter he had written to the President about a missing $20 billion from the proceeds of the national oil giant, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), which was supposed to be remitted into the coffers of the federal government.
Sanusi had actually sent the letter to the President on September 25, 2013 and was just notifying Okonjo-Iweala about 10 days later. In fact, the figure he initially claimed was actually $49.8 billion, which he said was missing between January 2012 and July 2013. Sanusi had also claimed the figure came from a “thorough job” his team at the CBN had done on the inflow of revenue from the NNPC into the Federation Account.

Okonjo-Iweala was alarmed. Her alarm came from the fact that there were actually shortfalls in remittance but not a staggering almost $50 billion. According to her, it was between $10 billion and $12 billion. Writing in her autobiography, Fighting Corruption is Dangerous: The Story Behind the Headlines, the former finance minister said they actually had a spreadsheet in her ministry which showed that truly, there was a shortfall but not anything near what Sanusi had claimed.


Now, the aspect that lent credence to the thinking that Sanusi deliberately leaked the letter was aptly captured by Okonjo-Iweala in the book. She had written inter alia:
“My other worry was that such a sensational letter would be leaked to the press and reflect negatively on the country. In which kind of country could $50 billion go missing or unaccounted for? Surely, a banana republic. Sanusi Lamido Sanusi assured me that only three people knew of this letter – himself, myself and the President. But I was skeptical.


I asked if he had typed the letter himself and he said, no. It means other people had handled the information and were in the know. I was sure the letter would leak to the press very soon and I was surprised that the President had not mentioned the letter to me … At an early morning meeting, the President acknowledged that the Central Bank governor had indeed sent him such a letter. He said he was astonished at the amount and asked if Lamido had discussed the matter with me before hand. I said, no. When the President asked my opinion about the unaccounted amount; I gave him the same answer I had given Lamido the night before-the Finance Ministry estimate was in the rage of $10.8 billion to $12 billion. The President then said he found the situation troubling and wondered if it was related to an ongoing investigation with the governor that I had not been aware of.”
Okonjo-Iweala’s fears were later confirmed when, few weeks later, she got a call from the African correspondent of the Financial Times, Williams Wallis, who claimed he had a copy of the letter from the CBN governor to the President alleging that a sum of almost $50 billion was missing from the nation’s coffers and wanted to know the minister’s reaction to the matter.

And that was it. No matter the explanation from the Presidency or the Finance Ministry, the opposition had gotten something to latch onto. Even before Sanusi’s letter, the issue about the Jonathan Presidency was that it had treated the issue of corruption with kid gloves.

Just before Sanusi wrote his letter, there was another issue with the Minister of Aviation, Stella Oduah, who was accused of lavishing over N260 million on luxury cars. And there was also the unending issue of “subsidy bazaar” in which the then President had, allegedly, allowed people to claim money from the controversial subsidy funds for petroleum products they never brought into the country.
The allegation of Sanusi seemed to be the final nail that sealed Jonathan’s Presidency. The newly formed APC, apparently enjoying the narrative and harping on it, did not miss any opportunity to tell the outside world of how much Jonathan condoned corruption.


The Presidency had responded by suspending Sanusi but the opposition jumped behind him and claimed he was being victimised. Suddenly, the coming Emir of Kano had become anti-corruption hero. The Presidency stood its ground and Sanusi had to go. And by February 20, 2014, Sanusi left office as Governor of CBN. However, before he left office, the federal government had opened investigations into his tenure as the head of the apex bank and also as chief executive of First Bank. It was a clear case of the Presidency fighting back, as it felt Sanusi had provided the opposition weapon to fight it. The fact that Sanusi even later reviewed his figures downwards – from $49.8 billion to $20 billion and later $13 billion – the issue would not just go away.

Riding on the Back of the Tiger…
While all these were going on, the then Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, died on June 4, 2014 and with it came the high wire politics of succession. In modern history, there had never been any time the choice of a new Emir of Kano had been that tense. The APC was enjoying a lot of goodwill among Nigerians, especially in the northern part of the country. And there was no better way to prove its relevance than being seen as instrumental to the installation of a traditional ruler as strategic and important as the Emir of Kano.

Meanwhile, the then Kano State governor, Dr. Rabiu Kwankwaso, had just joined five other PDP governors to decamp to the APC. The party’s apparatchik relocated to the city of Kano and started pulling the strings behind the scenes. While Abuja was pushing its weight to ensure that Sanusi did not emerge as the new Emir. The federal government had backed the son of the late Emir to succeed his father and he was even the preferred choice of most Kano indigenes. But the anti-Jonathan Presidency movement was also very strong then. Hence, on June 9, 2014, Sanusi emerged as the 14th Emir of the ancient city of Kano. APC had had its way.

And Rider and the Tiger Fell Apart…
From all indications, Emir Sanusi had been voicing his frustrations about the situation of things in the country. Even as a banker, Sanusi has never run away from controversy. He has called on the North to embrace education and has also lamented the security situation in the northern region.

But beyond this, he had never hidden his disdain for the governor of the state, Ganduje, who, alongside many prominent Kano indigenes, he believed had brought shame to the state, especially going by his bribery scandal when a video went viral where he was apparently collecting bribe money in dollars from a contractor. In the build-up to the election, it was obvious that most top Kano sons and daughters were against Ganduje’s return. But even after the election went into a rerun, Ganduje had his way and the emir was shown the first sign that trouble was on the way for him. Supporters of Ganduje, after his announcement as the winner of the governorship rerun election, and, apparently working on prompting, had gone to the Coronation Hall at Government House and removed the photograph of the Emir. Ordinarily, that should have been a sacrilege, going by how much the Emirship is held in reverence. But those who carried out the act got away with it.

As controversial as the whole issue has turned out, there are those who feel Ganduje is not doing anything unusual. The Secretary of the Arewa Consultative Forum, Anthony Sani, is one of them. He said there was no big deal in breaking up the Kano Emirate Council and added that he would not be surprised if the Sokoto Emirate Council was also broken up into more councils.
Speaking to an online newspaper, The Interview, Sani was asked if he saw what had befallen Kano coming the way of Sokoto Emirate, too, being the last of the old emirates standing.

“I cannot tell precisely because governance and traditions of society are dynamic and in a state of flux. If language, which is emblematic of culture is dynamic, traditional institution is subject to change. There will be nothing exotic or quixotic if such changes take place in Sokoto State,” Sani said. Going down memory lane, Sani said Ganduje was not the first governor to break up the Kano Emirate. “Governor Abubakar Rimi (former Kano State governor) did it before. It was President Buhari in his first coming as military head of state that reversed it.”

He added that the former governor of Plateau State, the late Solomon Lar, had done something similar in the past, when he increased chiefdoms in Plateau under the “emancipation mantra.”

Sani was not done. He added that the former military governor, Ja’afaru Isa, of Kaduna State, created chiefdoms in the southern part of the state to extend the influence of the so-called non-indigenes. Sani said a similar situation happened in Oyo under the outgoing governor.
But a top media practitioner who had a chat with this reporter yesterday suggested instead that Ganduje should go ahead and depose the Emir but should not tamper with the current structure of the Kano Emirate Council. “Let him depose the Emir if he wants to. But he should not destroy the emirate,” he admonished.

From Abuja, Mum is the Word…
The deafening silence from the Aso Rock seat of power had been disturbing to many observers who believed that the silence of the Presidency was an indication that Ganduje might have been acting out a script meant to clip the wings of the controversial but flamboyant emir.
In fact, the governor was said to have instructed the Emir to report to the local government chairman instead of reporting to him. And from all indications, those who removed the Emir’s picture in the Coronation Hall early this year might have been overzealous, but how prophetic their action has turned out. That is if Emir Sanusi goes the way of his grandfather, Emir Mohammad Sanusi, who was deposed and banished to a village close to Wudil in the outskirts of Kano.

Between Capacity to Govern and Integrity According to Sanusi
In the run-up to the presidential election in February, Sanusi was reported to have said “It is NOT always easy to have a leader who has both integrity and capacity to govern – two important qualities of a leader. If a leader does not have both integrity and capacity to govern, choose the one that has the capacity to govern because his capacity to govern will benefit the people while his lack of integrity will be his own harm. If you choose a man who has integrity without capacity to govern, his lack of capacity to govern will harm the people while his integrity will only benefit himself.”_
Not a few interpreted the above to be a veiled jab at the president who was being packaged on his integrity while his opponent was campaigning on his competence and capacity.
Any wonder that the Presidency has kept mum on the raging issue of balkanisation of the emirate to whittle down Sanusi’s influence?

A group, the Yoruba Youth Council (YYC), has raised the alarm over the incessant 'kidnappings' in the southwestern region of the country by some unscrupulous fulani herdmen who demand outrageous ransom before releasing the victims

The group said that it was worried and aware that the herdsmen had laid seiged on the Yourba land by perpetrating all forms of criminal activities including kidnapping innocent persons and striking them to death.

The YYC,in a statement issued after its emergency meeting attended by it representatives from all the South Western states on Saturday, noted that the youth are prepared to use all the available

power within their reach to defend the region and fight against criminal invasion by the herdsmen.

The statement was jointly signed by Comrade Eric Oluwole and Mr. Benson Akinwumi, YYC's National President, and National Deputy Spokesman respectively and obtained by Sahara Reporters.

According to the YYC, the untoward activities of the Fulani herdsmen in the south-western region which aimed at causing terror on the Yourba land will be resisted by the angry Youth.

The group also called on all Yoruba leaders including monarchs, elected Governors, and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, to speak against the invasions of the south west region by the fulani herdsmen.

They, however, asked the security agencies especially the police to as a matter of urgency investigate how the criminal elements among the fulani herdsmen source their funds and sponsors.

The statement read: "That we are fully aware that these criminals masquerading as herdsmen are being daily loaded in with trucks and vans into different part of our nation.

"We are aware that many of these criminals are abating(sic) and hibernating under some few unscrupulous, self-centered individuals among the Yoruba leaders who because of their desperate desire for gains are betraying the interest of the land.

"We have resolved to do everything possible, using every resources at our disposal and which is within the confinement of the law to fight, defend and to resist the incessant strikings and

kidnappings by these criminal forces.

"We are calling on the leadership of Afeniferere to as a matter of urgency summon an emergency meeting where they should put heads together and declare their position on this looming crisis which if not properly and immediately addressed could lead to revolts from our angry Youths.

"The Aare-Ona-Kakanfo, the Oni of Ife, the Alafin of Oyo and other powerful Kings and leaders in Yoruba land should come together and agree on feasible line of actions which will go beyond words on papers, fishing out the bad heads and betrayals in the land whoever they may be and providing the necessary supports for us the Youths in resisting these desperate attempt by the Fulanis to wipe out our generation and take over our land.

"We call on the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, all the Southwest Governors and Governors elect and every concerned personalities in positions of authority, that neglecting their personal political differences and interest which is obviously dividing the Yoruba nation beyond reasonable understanding, should come together and address this issue before it will galvanize to national crisis.

"We call on the Inspector general of police to set up panels and committee which is capable of investigating the root of these problems while we still have the time. How are these people being weaponized? Who are those sponsoring them and responsible for bringing them in enmass and what is the cause that they are fighting?


"The Nigerian Police should issue a statement not later than 2 weeks and state their position on how these people are being able to transfer their weapons of warfare, beating all checking points on their way, and why there has been no prosecution of any of those they claimed to have arrested so far? We demand an emergency investigation into all the recent kidnappings, maiming and killing of farmers across the nation and all that are involved prosecuted. Otherwise, they should declare to the general public that they are no longer fit and capable of protecting the Yoruba nation and hence, giving us the go ahead to fight and defend ourselves.


"We call on all well-meaning members of the international communities and organizations, especially, government of the United States of America, authorities of the United nations, African Union and ECOWAS, to be at alert and be ready to give the Yoruba nation the necessary support which may be needed at the time when revolt may be the only option of the Yoruba Youths in resisting these desperate criminals from wiping out our generation.


"We have sent a letter of notification to all the Youth Organizations across the Yoruba nation on the need to be prepared and the readiness to rise and defend the interest of the land at the time when we shall call on them." the statement read.

We demand an emergency investigation into all the recent kidnappings, maiming and killing of farmers across the nation and all that are involved prosecuted. Otherwise, they should declare to the general public that they are no longer fit and capable of protecting the Yoruba nation and hence, giving us the go ahead to fight and defend ourselves.


"We call on all well-meaning members of the international communities and organizations, especially, government of the United States of America, authorities of the United nations, African Union and ECOWAS, to be at alert and be ready to give the Yoruba nation the necessary support which may be needed at the time when revolt may be the only option of the Yoruba Youths in resisting these desperate criminals from wiping out our generation.


"We have sent a letter of notification to all the Youth Organizations across the Yoruba nation on the need to be prepared and the readiness to rise and defend the interest of the land at the time when we shall call on them." the statement read.

Appeal court with appalling judgments?

First it was the case of the dancing senator. The tribunal had a two-one split decision that there was no need for a re-run in the first place because the INEC official had no rights to cancel the elections he cancelled. Adeleke was declared the winner and APC went to the Appeal court.

The Appeal court, our own sacred hall of justice said that the tribunal ruling is overturned because the person that delivered the lead judgment was absent when two witnesses out of over 34 gave evidence. They also said that absence of ballot paper records does not prove that the electoral act has been substantially violated �. With those two reasons and an nine others, they rendered the tribunal irrelevant by throwing away its entire proceedings and refusing to send the case back for retrial.

Case of CJN Onnoghen.
The CJN challenged an exparte order, a very funky order made based on an unmoved exparte motion that the CJN be suspended from office, a clear violation of the Nigeria constitution and pisses on the principle of fair hearing.

Our Appeal court judges first put that case that should have been given accelerated hearing on cooler. They waited for the CCT to carry out its sham trial and conviction then announced they were ready to deliver judgment.

The Appeal court said that the order based on the funky exparte motion violated the CJNs right to fair trial but said since he has been found guilty by that same unfair trial, they were throwing the case out �

Ladies and gentlemen, is like we are having Miyetti Allah judgement for now at the Appeal courts o, or shall my Lords claim ignorance of how the constitution works? Could it be my Lords are having other overlords threatening them or why are we having appalling judgments from our Appeal courts? �
