HealthRe: 11 Natural Remedies To Get Rid Of A Sore Throat by realestyomi(op): 11:36pm On Aug 31, 2017
Thanks.
Health11 Natural Remedies To Get Rid Of A Sore Throat by realestyomi(op): 8:14pm On Aug 31, 2017
A sore throat can be very uncomfortable.

The main symptom is pain and irritation in the throat, especially when you swallow.

A sore throat occurs as part of your body's immune response to viral or bacterial infections.

Your natural immune response leads to inflammation and swelling of the mucous membranes in the throat.

Fortunately, there are several natural remedies that may provide relief, including some that are supported by scientific evidence.

Here are 11 natural sore throat remedies.

1. Apple cider vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is a natural health tonic that's been used in folk medicine remedies for centuries. Its main active ingredient, acetic acid, helps fight bacteria.

The ancient Greek physician Hippocrates, known as the father of medicine, even prescribed a combination of apple cider vinegar and honey - known as oxymel - to treat flu symptoms such as coughs and sore throats.

To help relieve throat pain, drink 1 cup of warm water mixed with 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and an optional tablespoon of honey.

Bottom line: Apple cider vinegar has antibacterial properties and may help provide sore throat relief when consumed in small amounts with warm water.

2. Salt water gargle

Gargling with salt water is a well-known natural remedy to get rid of a sore throat.

The salt helps reduce swelling by pulling water out of your throat tissue. It may also help kill unwanted microbes in your throat.

Combine 1 cup of warm water with 1 teaspoon of salt and stir to dissolve. Gargle with a mouthful of this mixture for 30 seconds, once per hour.

Bottom line: Gargling hourly with warm salt water helps reduce swelling and may ease throat discomfort.

3. Honey

Honey is a delicious sweetener that is often used in combination with other natural ingredients to soothe a sore throat.

In addition to helping fight infection and providing pain relief, honey can undeniably make remedies taste better.

Honey may be especially effective when combined with warm water and apple cider vinegar or herbs.

However, it shouldn't be given to children under the age of one because their guts haven't had a chance to acquire healthy bacteria that can fight off germs, such as botulism spores, that are sometimes found in honey.

Also, people who avoid sugar or follow a low-carb diet may want to choose another remedy, since honey is a form of sugar and contains 17 grams of carbs per tablespoon (15 ml).

HealthThe Health Benefits Of Coconut Water by realestyomi(op): 9:03pm On Aug 29, 2017
Is coconut water good for you and does it deserve the health hype? A nutritionist examines the claims that it can boost weight loss and athletic performance.
Coconut water burst onto the scene – and into the fridge – a couple of years ago, touted as an all-around miracle drink. But is there any science to back up the health claims? Nutritionist Jo Lewin explains…
What is coconut water?

Coconut water is the clear liquid found inside green, immature coconuts. Young coconuts are favoured for their water as it is tastier, plentiful in volume and easier to access by chopping the top off the softer shell. More mature coconuts have a harder husk and less water inside because it gradually solidifies to form the flesh.
Different varieties of coconut yield slightly different-tasting water depending on where they are grown. In taste and nutrition, coconut water is different to coconut milk and coconut oil, both of which are made from the flesh of the coconut. Read more about the health benefits of coconut milk and find out how healthy coconut oil really is.

HealthHow Pineapple Juice Can Help For Cough Relief by realestyomi(op): 3:28pm On Aug 29, 2017
Home remedies containing pineapple juice are sometimes used as an alternative to cough medicine. But is pineapple juice effective for cough relief?
Natural remedies for common ailments are often made popular by alternative medicine blogs and websites. However, claims about the effectiveness of these treatments are sometimes made without much or any scientific evidence.

This article explores the health benefits of pineapple juice and the scientific evidence to support using it as a cough treatment. It also looks at other cough remedies to help people decide which is the right option for them.

Can pineapple juice relieve a cough?

Many communities use natural remedies as an alternative to over-the-counter medicine. For instance, the Amish community has traditionally used a remedy containing pineapple juice to treat coughs.

These types of home remedies have reached a wider audience in recent years. Some websites claim that pineapple juice is five times more effective at treating a cough than cough medicine. But is this true?

While there is some medical research around pineapple juice, there is a need for more evidence of its effectiveness, as a cough remedy.

Pineapple juice is commonly known as a lytic agent, meaning it helps thin out mucus, so it is easier to move with coughs.

One review, published in 2010 by researchers at an institute in India, has been cited in other articles, as evidence that pineapple juice is an effective cough treatment. However, the article focuses on tuberculosis rather than cough treatment.

The peer-reviewed article mentions that a mixture of pineapple juice, salt, pepper, and honey can help dissolve mucus in the lungs of people with tuberculosis.

However, it is unclear from the study whether this finding was central to the research. As such, it is hard to rely on this finding to support the claims made about pineapple juice, as an effective cough remedy.

This does not undermine the experiences of those who have personally found pineapple juice helpful in relieving a cough. It just means that further research is needed to prove it is effective.

Health benefits of pineapple juice

While the effectiveness of pineapple juice as a cough remedy is still in question, it does have nutritional properties that suggest it may help reduce cough symptoms.

Pineapple juice contains bromelain, a type of enzyme that research shows to have anti-inflammatory and pain reducing properties.

Bromelain may help relieve symptoms of asthma and other respiratory problems, as well as break down mucus. Another study shows bromelain to have the potential to help fight cancerous cells.

Bromelain is not known specifically to relieve a cough, but because of these other properties, it may help reduce some cough symptoms. It will still depend on the cause of a cough, however.

When considering the health benefits of pineapple juice, it is helpful to remember that it also contains:

high levels of vitamin C to support the immune system and eyesight
some fibre to help digestion
manganese, which helps prevent cell damage and ageing
the anti-inflammatory properties of bromelain
beta carotene, copper, zinc, and folate, which can boost fertility
Given the many health benefits of pineapple juice, there is little harm in using this remedy to assist healing.

Pineapple juice cough remedy recipes

If someone is keen to try pineapple juice as a home cough remedy, there are recipes they can try. Here are two simple ideas to get started.

Traditional pineapple cough remedy

The most common pineapple juice remedy and the one included in the often-cited Indian research study uses a few simple ingredients.

Health1 In 7 Nursing Mothers Suffers From Postpartum Depression by realestyomi(op): 10:13am On Aug 29, 2017
Mr Tunji Johnson, a Team Lead, Monitoring and Evaluation, Postpartum Support Network Africa, says one in seven nursing mothers are suffering from the postpartum depression.

Johnson spoke in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the sidelines of a conference on "Work and Emotional Balance" in Lagos.

The conference was organised by Accrossall, a training and social development organisation, on Saturday.

Wikipedia, the free encyclopaedia describes postpartum depression (PPD), also called postnatal depression, as "a type of mood disorder associated with childbirth which can affect both sexes.

According to Johnson, there are no measures in place in the nation's health institutions to address the issue of post-partum depression in mothers.

Children born by women that have post-partum depression have the tendency to exhibit behavioural problems when they become adults.

In this part of the world, mental illness is more perceived as spiritual, and so we have to do something about it," he said.

Johnson said that there was a need to create more awareness among mothers and train more nurses to attend to pregnant women in the antenatal clinics.

HealthThe Top 5 Foods That Cause Joint Pain by realestyomi(op): 3:47pm On Aug 24, 2017
According to the CDC, there are currently 50 million Americans who suffer from some form of joint pain such as arthritis or gout. For many people, this pain can be minimized by avoiding foods which are inflammatory. Here you will find a list of the top five foods that are inflammatory.

Alcohol

Alcohol may be a pleasant way to relax but it is also a neurotoxin and so is one of the top inflammatory foods. Alcohol is a risk factor for gout which can lead to pain in the joints due to the build up of uric acid. This condition can be very painful and is typically experienced in the feet and knees. Another reason that alcohol is one of the foods that cause joint pain is its role in weight gain. Excess weight can lead to more strain on the joints which in turn causes pain.

Dairy

Dairy products such as milk, cheese, and cream are all foods that cause joint pain. Calcium competes with other minerals contained in the dairy products and is improperly absorbed. This calcium is then stored in the soft tissue such as the hair or the skin instead of where it is actually needed in order to avoid pain in the joints. In addition, the lactose sugar in dairy products can lead to increase in joint pain.

HealthProstate Cancer: Causes, Symptoms & Treatments by realestyomi(op): 9:01am On Aug 23, 2017
Prostate cancer, one of the most common forms of cancer among males, affects 1 in 6 men over the course of their lifetime. Fortunately, there are very effective treatment methods available for this form of cancer, dropping the mortality rate in men to roughly 1 in 36 individuals. Even so, given that this disease kills more than 26,000 men each year in the United States alone, it is critical to understand the details of this chronic disease, including its causes, symptoms and potential treatment options.

What Is Prostate Cancer?

Prostate cancer is similar to many other cancers, which occurs when cells begin to grow out of control. The prostate is an important gland in the male anatomy, as it produces some of the fluid in semen and helps control the muscle contractions during ejaculation. It surrounds the urethra and is located below the bladder. Despite being the size of a walnut or so in younger men, it can increase in size significantly as men age. This gland is where the cells can begin to grow out of control, typically in the form of adenocarcinoma. While there are a number of other varieties of prostate cancer, including sarcomas and neuroendocrine tumours, adenocarcinoma is by far the most common form.

The reason prostate cancer can be so deadly is that there are very few signs or symptoms of the disease as it forms. An enlarged or inflamed prostate can be an indicator but these symptoms can also happen for many other reasons. Some men can live for years with prostate cancer and experience no ill effects, perhaps even dying from other causes before doctors ever realize that prostate cancer is present. Since there are no early-warning signals, annual screenings for men of a certain age is highly recommended, typically once you pass the age of 50.

There are various tests that can be conducted following a prostate biopsy that can determine whether you have developed prostate cancer, or if you are merely experiencing a pre-cancerous condition. These tests will determine the level of change in the prostate as a means of identifying cancerous growth. Small changes in the pattern of cells in the prostate are not necessarily dangerous, and may not lead to prostate cancer. If there are more significant changes in the cell pattern, then your chances of having prostate cancer are significantly higher.

Symptoms Of Prostate Cancer

Some of the major symptoms of prostate cancer include difficulties with urination, sexual side effects, and inflammation in certain parts of the body. The vagueness of the symptoms and their similarity to symptoms of other conditions is what makes this form of cancer so difficult to catch early.

Urination: The first signs of prostate cancer that many men experience involves difficulty in urinating and painful or burning sensations while urinating, or the constant need to go to the bathroom. Men with early stages of prostate cancer also struggle to start or stop urination and may experience interrupted the flow or uncontrolled dribbling. This is due to the inflamed prostate gland’s impact on the urethra.

Sexual Side Effects: When it comes to sex, men with prostate cancer may have difficulty gaining or maintaining an erection, or it may be painful when they ejaculate. There also might be blood in the semen or urine.

Inflammation and Pain: Some of the peripheral symptoms may include soreness or stiffness in the back, hips, groin or lower abdomen, as the inflammation of the prostate gland can be quite painful.

Note: While these symptoms could be caused by other conditions, and don’t necessarily mean you have prostate cancer, it is best to speak with a doctor about these symptoms if they become chronic.

To improve your home’s air quality, consider installing an air conditioner. The filter can prevent dust and pollen from infiltrating your house. Furthermore, because AC reduces humidity, it can even mitigate asthma symptoms.

Move More

The CDC recommends that adults get at least 150 minutes, or two and a half hours, of moderate physical activity every week. That averages out to thirty minutes of exercise five days a week. It might seem next to impossible to squeeze workouts into your already busy schedule, but you don’t have to cram in all your exercise at once. Even moving for ten minutes at a time can bring health benefits. When you take a break at work, walk around the block or climb a few flights of stairs. You’ll get an immediate mood boost and reap long term benefits, too!

HealthWhy Green Vegetables Are Important For Good Digestion by realestyomi(op): 8:12am On Aug 16, 2017
Many centuries ago doctors in some countries used to determine a person's health by the colour of their urine or faeces. Urine can change colour and odour depending on what you eat and drink, what supplements you take, what prescription medications, how much exercise you do or, on a more serious note, what illnesses you have in your body.

Faeces colour also changes if your diet is not healthy your bowel functions will suffer. If you eat a lot of highly processed foods then your digestion will be poor and you could become constipated, or get diarrhoea. The refined products of sugar, white flour, lactose and many unnatural ingredients affect our digestion and the health of all our organs. A diet rich in fruit and vegetables, however, will ensure you get some of your vitamins, minerals, fibre and antioxidants even though it is advisable to take a multivitamin anyway just to cope with the denatured impact of our environment and tampering that occurs with genetically modified foods these days. Fibre and water are important to help your body eliminate waste and if you don't go to the toilet to empty your bowels on a daily basis you need to drink lots of filtered, boiled, warm water to get your digestion working better.

You will find if you eat a lot of dark coloured, green vegetables like kale and spinach your faeces will turn a darker green colour. Whilst this is OK if you are eating a lot of greens it is not OK if you don't eat greens at all. It can be a sign of Salmonella infection or the Giardia parasite. Watch out for symptoms such as diarrhoea, cramps and fever if you have green stools. Also, it can mean there is too much iron in your diet. Beetroot, on the other hand, may turn your stools reddish and often medications affect stools by making them appear whitish in colour. However, if you see black in your stools keep an eye out for blood and report this to your doctor or health practitioner.

HealthUN Treats 2 Million, Rehabilitates 60 Health Facilities In Northeast by realestyomi(op): 8:33am On Aug 15, 2017
The United Nations (UN) has treated about two million people for various ailments and rehabilitated over 60 health facilities destroyed by insurgents in the Boko Haram-troubled Northeast region this year.

The UN Deputy Humanitarian Coordinator for Nigeria, Peter Lundberg, announced this in a joint press conference he addressed with Governor Kashim Shettima in Maiduguri weekend.

The fact remains that the humanitarian crisis in Nigeria's Northeast and the Lake Chad region - now in its eighth year - is one of the most severe in the world today, with 8.5 million people in need of humanitarian assistance in 2017 in the worst affected states of Borno, Adamawa and Yobe, and 6.9 million targeted for humanitarian assistance in these three states. Saving lives remains of course our number one priority but we have the moral imperative to help the thousands who are returning home to stand on their own feet and get their lives going again," the Deputy Humanitarian Coordinator said.
