When sugar cravings set in, the last thing we might think of is our long-term mental health. However, there is plenty of evidence to suggest that we should. We've all been there. After a stressful day, when our mood is low, it is easy to reach for a tub of ice cream or similar sugary treat. But evidence of the link between sugar and mental health is mounting - and it's not just sweets that rack up our daily sugar intake. Last week, Medical News Today reported on a study published in the journal Scientific Reports that identified a greater risk of depression among men who consumed significant amounts of sugar in their diet. One might argue that feeling depressed may lead to increased sugar consumption, rather than the other way around. However, what was really interesting about this study was that the researchers, from University College London Institute of Epidemiology and Public Health in the United Kingdom, used a mathematical model to exclude exactly that: a phenomenon they called reverse causation. Using data from the Whitehall II study - a large group of civil servants in the U.K. - they showed that sugar consumption came before depression, rather than being a consequence of it. http://9jahealth.com.ng/sugar-emotional-wellness-harmful-mix/

While many people don’t think of using essential oils for constipation, they can be extremely effective for boosting digestive efficiency and improving the overall health of the gut. Constipation doesn’t have a firm definition, as it can mean everything from painful or strained bowel movements to simple infrequency. However, constipation can be extremely uncomfortable, generating bloating and cramping, stomach upset and other gastrointestinal issues, in addition to poor nutrient uptake, hemorrhoids (due to bowel movement straining), blood in the stool and a higher risk of colorectal cancer and ulcers. Spending a lot of time on the toilet is unpleasant for everyone, so understanding why your constipation has occurred is the first step towards proper treatment. Constipation can be caused by many different things, including the use of certain medications, improper diet, hormonal disorders, excessive laxative use and extended illness or infection in the colon or stomach. Furthermore, excessive alcohol consumption, dehydration and substance abuse can cause constipation. At its very core, however, constipation is caused by the slowed or delayed movement of waste matter through the colon, so increasing peristaltic motion and moving the bowels is always the goal. Constipation can be acute or chronic, but extended periods of constipation can be dangerous, and even life-threatening, so it is important to speak with a doctor if basic remedies and self-treatment isn’t effective. Using essential oils for constipation is effective due to their anti-inflammatory, anti-spasmodic, carminative, antibacterial, sedative and relaxant properties. List Of Best Essential Oils For Constipation http://9jahealth.com.ng/9-best-essential-oils-constipation/

The health benefits of watermelon include the prevention of kidney disorders, high blood pressure, the prevention of cancer, diabetes, heart disease, heat stroke, macular degeneration and impotence. The question is, why is there so much craze for the watermelon? At first glance, it may seem like nothing more than a big ball of water. We all know that there is nothing more refreshing than a big, chilled wedge of watermelon on a hot, summer day and it does sport a stylish scientific name of Citrullus Lanatus, but what’s the real reason so many people flock to grocery stores every summer to buy a big, awkward fruit like this one? Well, it is hard to narrow it down to a single reason; there are actually a lot of them. Watermelons are considered a vine-like flowering plant that is actually native to Southern Africa, and it is there that the wild varieties are in the greatest abundance, ranging from super sweet to bitter, and varying in size as well. They moved north to Egypt, and were cultivated in the Nile River Valley, and eventually moved east into China, roughly 1,000 years ago. Now, watermelon is grown around the world, and in 44 of the 50 states in America. It is specifically selected to grow larger and juicier, resulting in the huge fruits that many of us are familiar with. The green outer rind is hard and fleshy, and rarely eaten, while the interior is soft, red or pink flesh containing the many seeds; this is the part of watermelon which is typically eaten. http://9jahealth.com.ng/9-amazing-benefits-watermelon/

Kano State government has concluded the July round of poliomyelitis vaccination of over three million children below five years. In a chat with LEADERSHIP , the executive Secretary, Kano State Primary Health Care Management Board, Dr. Nasir Mahmoud stated that the July exercise was hitch-free, declaring that the exercise covered the entire 44 local government areas of the state. According to him ,the state government is on the verge of total eradication of the polio disease at all levels. Checks reveal that the exercise suffered setback due to cultural misconception and religious misinterpretation. Other obvious hitches as observed were deviations from the laid down regulations by some of the vaccinators, lack of supervision and poor record keeping, instances that are said to be of significance repeatedly by the technical staff in the fight against poliomyelitis disease. Dr .Mahmud explained that the only way to succeed in the fight against poliomyelitis is to ensure 100 percent administration of the oral vaccine on all eligible children. The next round of the polio immunisation will hold in October this year. http://9jahealth.com.ng/kano-state-govt-immunises-3-million-children/

Mental health problems, like depression and anxiety are experienced by more people worldwide than any other physical disorder. According to predictions from the World Health Organization, by 2020 depression will cause greater disability than any other mental or physical disorder. This is a severe problem and it is common sense that we find effective solutions for these problems. To-day most mental health problems are treated with psychological and pharmacological interventions. The most common psychological treatments are known as cognitive-behavioural therapies (CBT), while antidepressants are the most common class of medication used to treat both depression and anxiety. Other interventions are also effective, although not promoted as much as the previous mentioned treatments, including exercise, relaxation/ meditation, and sleep-based interventions. Herbs and nutrients are also often used to treat mental health problems, but there is doubt whether they actually work. The following more commonly used natural supplements will be reviewed to see if there is actually any evidence to support their efficacy. 1. Omega-3 fish oils. There has been a substantial amount of research on the effects of fish oil, mostly in the area of depression, anxiety and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD ). The overall evidence suggests that fish oil is moderate effective for these conditions. In several meta-analyses it had been confirmed that fish oil can improve depressive symptoms that occur in major depressive disorders and bipolar disorder. The most effective fish oils for mental health are those ones that contain greater concentration of EPA ( a type of omega-3 fat) http://9jahealth.com.ng/improve-mental-health-naturally/

Overview There is no single magic pill that will help you slim down after giving birth. While most women are eager to get back into a better shape and figure after pregnancy, you shouldn’t start dieting immediately after delivery. Your body still requires time and energy to recover. Health experts recommend that you should give yourself at least six weeks before you start cutting down you calories in an effort to lose some weight. If you are breastfeeding, wait until your baby is two months old before you start dieting. Here are some healthy diets for post pregnancy weight loss. Fruits and Vegetables Fruits and vegetables are great sources of vitamins, minerals and fiber which are all essential in aiding post pregnancy weight loss. According to Heather Mangieri, RD, spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, adding plenty of fruits and vegetables in your diet will help you lose the extra pounds because they keep you fuller for longer and curb cravings for unhealthy foods. In addition, they will help you cut back on your calories you consume on a regular basis. Whole Grains While whole grains may appear too heavy for a meal, they have been proven to be effective in weight control. In reference to Marjorie Nolan, Cohn, a nutritionist expert from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, unlike other grains, whole grains have more fiber, which is renowned for filling. Human lack the enzymes required in the breakdown of fibers and thus move through your digestive tract undigested. This provides the bulk that keeps you fuller for longer, and thus you are more likely to eat less over the course of the day. http://9jahealth.com.ng/healthy-diet-post-pregnancy-weight-loss/

Sexual intercourse can sometimes be a marker for a healthy heart because sex can be a form of exercise. It gives your heart a workout. People who have a desire for frequent sex, and are able to do so, are likely healthier overall. It also offers stress reduction and emotional benefits. A new study showed that men who had sex at least twice in a week almost halved their risk of heart disease. This study was conducted with over 1,000 men. Sex is an activity that involves intense physical and emotional elements. The medical world is finding that regular sex is so good for you, that, when you go to see a doctor they are asking many questions about your sex life to give them an indication of your overall health. Apparently sex is not only good for your heart; it is also good to keep many other illnesses away. For example, sex can actually cause you to get fewer colds. Research has shown that couples who have sex weekly have a 30 per cent increase in immunoglobulin A, an antibody that fights infection. Sex can also help women to have a more predictable period schedule, as a result of being exposed to male pheromones. In addition, having sex reduces stress – for physiological as well as emotional reasons. Anything that will reduce stress is good for you as too much stress can lead to many diseases including cancer. Sex reduces as it activates a nerve that has a calming effect. Having sex also lowers blood pressure, which reduces the risk of heart disease. Sex can even reduce LDL (“bad”) cholesterol and increase HDL (“good”) cholesterol! Sex improves your memory because blood flow increases to your brain. It increases feelings of motivation because of the release of endorphins. As you can see, a good sex life is one way to stay happy, healthy and fit. So, if your doctor starts grilling you about your bedroom habits, now at least you will know why. And this is actually only the tip of the iceberg. Sex has also been found to boost self-esteem and improve intimacy in your relationship. This is because sex and orgasms result in increased levels of the hormone oxytocin — the “love” hormone – that helps you to feel bonded to your partner. As oxytocin increases, so do hormones known as endorphins, which in turn lessens feelings of pain related to everything from headaches and arthritis to symptoms of PMS. It can also help you to get a better night’s sleep. http://9jahealth.com.ng/time-pay-attention-sexual-health/

What Is Acid Reflux? Acid reflux happens when the contents of your stomach rise into your esophagus. This occurs when your lower esophageal sphincter (LES) relaxes and allows stomach acid to enter your esophagus. Your doctor may diagnose you with gastroesophageal disease (GERD) if this happens more than twice a week. Several food-related factors may contribute to acid reflux, such as: the position of your body after eating the amount of food you eat during a single meal the type of foods you eat You can control each of these factors by making smart decisions about how and what you eat. Modifying your body position to an upright posture after a meal and eating smaller portions may help prevent reflux. However, knowing which foods to avoid can be a bit more confusing. There’s still some controversy in the medical community over which foods actually cause reflux symptoms. Despite this lack of consensus, many researchers agree that certain types of foods and beverages are best avoided to prevent indigestion, heartburn, and other symptoms of acid reflux. Weight loss may also be helpful in reducing symptoms. High-Fat Meals and Fried Foods Fatty foods generally lower pressure on your LES and delay stomach emptying. This may boost your risk of reflux symptoms. To help prevent reflux, decrease your total fat intake. Here are some high-fat foods you may want to avoid: french fries deep-fried onion rings potato chips butter whole milk cheese ice cream high-fat sour cream high-fat creamy salad dressings creamy sauces and dips high-fat cuts of red meat, such as marbled sirloin or prime rib Spicy Foods http://9jahealth.com.ng/foods-avoid-acid-refluxgerd/

Your skin is your friend. You like your skin. Your skin likes you. It protects you from the elements and literally keeps you together. You in turn do your best to protect it from any kind of damage. Then, one day, acne rears its ugly head, and you suddenly hate your skin. What do you do then? Turn to harsh chemicals, and expensive scrubs? That’s a fine way to thank a friend who’s been there for you since day one. Your epidermis isn’t at fault here-it can’t help that your hormones are causing all that extra sebum to clog up your pores, or the fact that bacteria is running rampant. If your skin could talk it would say something along the lines of “patience, grasshopper. Treat me right and I shall repay you in kind.” That’s just a guess, anyways. The point is, natural acne remedies are a good way to get rid of it, or at least hold it at bay. They make you step back and really figure out what’s going on with your skin, and how to work with it. Chances are, your skin will repay you in kind for not simply ravaging it with strange chemicals-and your wallet will probably thank you too. You might be surprised to find that you already have several acne treatments right in your own home — and in your kitchen of all places. Common foods and ingredients, such as cucumbers, oatmeal, grapes, and yeast, can be mixed into a facial mask and turned into acne remedies. Giving yourself a homemade facial may help you prevent or clear acne and keep skin glowing, moisturized, and healthy.

The benefits of vitamin C were discovered quite by accident during a scurvy epidemic in Europe hundreds of years ago. Today, foods high in vitamin C and fruits high in vitamin C are regularly touted for their purported ability to help heal anything from the common cold to depression. But research suggests that scurvy is still the only disease specifically caused by not getting enough vitamin C. It's a deficiency that is seldom seen in the Western world but that 200 years ago caused severe dental problems and non-healing wounds in English sailors,” explained Sean Paul, MD, a Fellow in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the University of Florida in Gainesville, FL. The sailors earned the name “limey” for their penchant for carrying citrus fruits high in vitamin C on long voyages. “Vitamin C is beneficial for overall health, especially with wound healing and providing a source of antioxidants,” Dr. Paul said. “There is a bounty of evidence that when taken in recommended quantities, it serves to keep skin and teeth healthy. It's also been linked to better eye and brain health. Which Foods Are Highest in Vitamin C? As you look in the mirror in the morning, you see that inevitable fate has struck: your first gray hair! Whether you are in your 20s or your 50s, grey hair catches up with all of us eventually. During hair growth, melanocytes make pigment and pass it to hair progenitor cells at the base of the hair follicle. These cells, in turn, transform into the various components of the growing hair. When our hair grows, pigments are continuously being incorporated, which results in our unique hair color. The cells responsible for this process are the pigment-producing melanocytes at the base of the hair follicle. In normal hair growth, the follicle produces hair at a rate of around 1 centimeter per month for several years. But all the cells in our body become increasingly damaged during our lifetime, and these melanocytes are eventually lost. When all the melanocytes are lost in a particular hair follicle, the next hair that grows will be grey or white. The biology of hair growth is rather complex, with a multitude of specialized cells involved in hair follicle structure and function. Scientists continue to unravel the process of human hair growth and pigmentation. http://9jahealth.com.ng/hair-turn-grey/

While it can be tempting to turn to medication, meditation, or just about anything someone suggests that will help you get a more restful night’s sleep, the answer to a more peaceful and revitalizing slumber may actually be in what you choose to eat — either earlier in the day or even as a bedtime snack. Certain foods can help you sleep sounder, so says science. Rather than simply willing your body and brain to just rest already (and torturing yourself just a little bit in the process), fix yourself a little pre-sleep snack, change up your usual breakfast routine, or use the opportunity to branch out and try some new-to-you foods that you either haven’t eaten before or aren’t normally found taking up space on your weekly grocery list. Better, more restful sleep, plus a tasty snack. Win-win. http://9jafood.com.ng/news/foods-help-sleep/
