raumdeuter: Because the market is closer to Lagos.
Most people would want to dock close to wher3 the market is
Lagos Plus the Southwest have a population of over 40M why would you want to dock close to the SE where they dont have the buying population there
If you are importing say generators, you dock in Onne, one docks in Lagos, Assuming its the same cost of landing. you would have to spend extra to transport yours to the Southwest where most of the buyers reside while Mr B sends less Hmm.. SIR What do you think made 40milion people (according to you) congregate at lagos + sw area? I think it's business, which mostly sterns from the seaport. Now imagine we make another seaport functional and another boisterous economy like that in lagos + sw Is created.. Don't you think Nigeria will be a better place? Do you know how much customs pays as demurrage daily? As at 2009, it was in newspapers that it stood at 1bilion naira! |

Super1Star: Here comes another fabricated lies.
There is no policy anywhere. SW axis is where the market is because of the purchasing power of the people in that axis. Hence, importers will route their goods through Lagos.
Simple as ABC.
Go to your town hall meetings and demand that all your igbo brothers should be importing only through Onne and listen to their response. "purchasing power of the people (sw) " Seriously? Sir.. What do the sw people do to earn this purchasing power you speak of? Please explain how that makes a man who wants to sell his goods prefer To pass the goods through Lagos and pay trucks N50,000 and more to deliver it after custom duties. |

sweetgala: Ask all the SE traders who have moved from their base in the east to Lagos, with the high rent and cost of commerce why it is so attractive.
Ask the foreign missions and multinationals who moved their HQ to Lagos in the light of the insecurity in the ND and SE amdd North due to kidnapping and brigandry. Even with the craze NURTW have tbey have never been known to kidnap a expatriate for ransom.
Ask the numerous governors who have run Lagos from Maruwa to Ambode who know the secret to attracting internal and external investors is creating a good environment, I was shocked when my cousin who is doing rather very well in Abuja told me during weekends Abuja is empty cause everyone goes to Lagos to enjoy the fruits of their labour.
Ask the citizenry who have created an accommodating enviromr for all who come to seek the Nigerian dream of fame and fortune so long they come with good intentions.
Lagos is the centre of Nigeria, and while PH and Enugu can be fun they do not have the woaw factor Lagos has, be jealous very jealous.
I'm not even a lagosian I hate the city, it is too rowdy for me, too busy, too congested, but I appreciate the reality of things.
Stop blaming the Yoruba for taking what they had and making good gains over time, this your tribalistic excuse is getting long in the tooth. Blame the citizenry of that state for not assaulting the ills in their society, God forbid the day the son born into a good house with ancestry decenfs into the vagabond levels MEND did, destroying the pipelines and by so doing the rivers and farms their people feed off. Go find out what the Yoruba call such children Yes great speech! Applaudusé! Now.. Sir, Do you think that this "insecurity" in the ss would have started If the youths were employed? Open any job listing and see that 90% of advertised jobs are in Lagos. Why? Oil companies operate in ss, flunt their huge cash everywhere, Employ the barest minimum and pay them peanuts compared to the work they do. Both the employed and unemployed in ss are not happy (mostly). So in your opinion, Is this "insecurity" you keep pointing out an inbuilt culture in ss people? Am sure u know the solution already ... Super1Star: If it is a FTZ, the better. Why are the SE importers still not using it? The truth is most importers will not use it even if the FG is paying them through incentives to use it. Maybe the economy of that region cannot sustain their importation through that port.
Insecurity can only be achieved by the concerted efforts of the leaders and youths of the region and not only through Govt coercion.
Insecurity is a perception that is not easy to correct. Before you can contract any foreigner to do any outside SW and Abuja, do you kn how much extra it will cost in comparison with what same foreigner would have charged for a job in SW and Abuja?
In a simple layman's language, which might be easier for you to understand -- you are paying premium for the insecurity.
That is the reason we should always be careful of our actions when we are shouting we are fighting for our rights under the name of militancy, kidnapping, robbery etc. Well said.. So do we leave the cost of the sea port and efficiency it promises to waste? Am sure the problem can be solved.. Pipeline vandalism was solved by yaradua right? |
Politics › Re: Onne Sea Port by RealityShot(op): 5:04pm On Jan 18, 2016 |
kayfra: It's the cost of militancy and general unruly behavior. Those same people have made the cost of producing oil as high as $28 a barrel when actual cost should be like $12-15 a barrel. Nigeria now has to start shutting down oil fields in the interlands since it's no longer worth lifting and selling at a loss. If the oil was located in the SW in that quantity and we maintained our relative peaceful nature, it would have been a different story.
The militants also ruin the viability of Calabar as a seaport. It's just unfortunate for the peaceful Ibibios, Afangs and other tribes in Akwa Ibom and Cross River area. They can't manufacture fast boats can they(militants)? So who gave them the boats? So these militants can not be stopped to cut costs and improve general public life in the country? The same way it is done at lagos? |
Politics › Re: Onne Sea Port by RealityShot(op): 4:59pm On Jan 18, 2016 |
sweetgala: I'm sure onne is a great facility, I meant hostile piracy when individuals attack ships, with the action if MEND and militants in that axis with access to the sea using fast boats this is a reality if the traffic in that axis does increase and these guys sea the easy pickings.
Yes the government can reduce the cost of demorage by improving efficiency, but the FG need to strategize a plan to do this, please stop the ethnic excuse. Are there really Zero pirates at lagos sea fronts? Can the method used to ensure safety there not be applied at onne? Efficiency in every situation dictates that to solve multiple problems faster, It is better to use 2 or more problem solving whatever.. In our case.. Efficiency is the reason onne was built. So why leave it to Roth while the problem is actually increasing in all ramifications? It's not ethnic. It's a national problem. It affects all including those in lagos, sokoto, borno and cross river states |

kayfra: Their imports are consequential but the economic power is in the SW. Why would a ship berth in Onne when it will only have a few containers destined for that area and then add the insecurity to the mix which Jacks up insurance cost for both the vessel owners and the shippers. Like the FBI forensic accountants always say... "follow the money" So the question is: who will benefit the most if the onne port stays shut/non fully functional? Lol... So who is really causing the "insecurity"? |
Politics › Re: Onne Sea Port by RealityShot(op): 4:45pm On Jan 18, 2016 |

Politics › Re: Onne Sea Port by RealityShot(op): 4:40pm On Jan 18, 2016 |
Super1Star: What is "dumorage"?
How is "dumorage" a cost to Govt? I Correct myself.. I speak of "demurrage" how is it a cost to government? Ships get delayed at lagos port after arriving. The port must pay them to wait in line till they are offloaded. Yes. Customs transfers these costs plus extra to importers.. But importers transfer the costs to consumers /citizens.. Citizens receive their one u from government. So eventually the money is paid by the government.. Lol crazy country |
Politics › Re: Onne Sea Port by RealityShot(op): 4:16pm On Jan 18, 2016 |
Super1Star: It is so expensive to deliver to Onne because of the following:
1. The importers had a choice of filling destination port themselves and they wrote Lagos with their own pen.
2. Th hazards for liners to berth in Onne is too much and it is not commensurate with the reward. Hence, captain decline carrying cargoes meant for such dangerous water. Anyone that will berth there will be at a higher cost.
3. Due to the fact that more ships are not berthing there, the charges might cost more because the cost of running a port is almost th same whether the port is in Zungeru or Sambisa or Kandahar. It is those small number of berthing ships that will bear the brunt of the total operational cost of the port. Hence the charges.
This will decrease greatly if only the importers from SE can simply fill Onne as destination port, can insure the lives of the crew and pay premium for the risk the ship is undertaken. So what's the solution to insecurity? You think you government can not solve that? Don't You think the government can impose very low tarriff at onne to foster more trade? I Remember onne is a trade free zone... |

How may times have you heard of container piracy at onne? Maeserk lines use it to date without issues.
And all these your points.. If you were the presidents.. Can you not overcome them to improve the lives of your people?
Or at least to reduce the dumorage costs to your Government? |

But since only a few container are heading to east, it is economic waste. Really you think a full ship from China discharges all containers at lagos port? Y then do you think we pay them dumorage? |

Please don't feed us with wrong facts. Hmm.. I am saying it ain't working like a standard sea port that it was built to be. Just tell the so called importers and killers of our economy to make the port of destination for their goods to be Onne and the shipping lines will comply.
However, they all know it will come at a higher cost to them because the shipping lines will factor in the possibility of kidnapping, piracy and even death. Yes.. Good question.. Y is it so expensive to deliver to onne? Kidnapping etc are all recent events... |

It was during his time that dangote, a private business man with limited resources, Started sourcing for funds to build a new refinery at a cost of 9bilion dollars. So why did Jonathan government not put 27bilion into building 3 brand new refineries? He/they knew what our problem was - excessive importation of petrol. Yet they sat on their oars. In that Jonathan and his government failed! I hope the current BUHARI led government will not make the same mistake of identification without solution to our problems. |

osemu8: President Muhammudu Buhari has directed the Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, to transfer relief items in various customs warehouses to designated officials for onward distribution to Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs. The Service Public Relations Officer, Wale Adeniyi, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja on Sunday. According to Mr. Adeniyi, the Comptroller General has set up a national committee that would coordinate and manage the movement and the transfer of seized relief items to give effect to the President’s directive. He said the relief items currently in government warehouses for distribution to the IDPs included goods that had been forfeited to the Federal Government of Nigeria. “It is important to stress that these items are only those that have been condemned properly in the competent court of law and have been forfeited to the Federal Government of Nigeria. “They include food items like rice, vegetable oil, spaghetti and essential items like soap, used clothing materials, mosquito nets, beddings and others,’’ he said. Mr. Adeniyi said that members of the committee were drawn from Customs Service, Army, Air Force, Police, Immigration Service and the EFCC.
