How many of these loudmouths follow National Assembly sessions? How many actually know, or care what those reps discuss and do every day in the house? You just sit in your parlour making these lazy, generalised assumptions, insulting your way through all of them, and expect everyone to just keep quiet and sfall in line? Sorry but we're not all some dumb, mob followership here. At least not all of us.

Some of us understand that a country gets the leaders it deserves. The senators are by no means perfect. But neither are WE.

They do SOME good work, since, as Nigerians, we generally don't just do nothing when put in a position to act. But they are also into making good money, since as Nigerians, we see such appointments as a means to get rich.

So the senators and reps are just being NIGERIAN. Their level of professionalism or otherwise, and morality is commensurate with the societal average or norm in Nigeria.

Noisemakers here are merely HYPOCRITES who come here to pretend that they're from a country whose people frown on corruption and other vices, but who just so happen to be cursed with crooked leaders, AND THAT'S A DELUSION I AM NOT PREPARED TO ENTERTAIN.

Senate grills Sanusi over comments on Assembly budget

Making little effort to hide their bias, members of the Senate committee on Budget and Appropriation led by Iyola Omisore, refused to give any latitude to the Central Bank governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi to defend his statement that the National Assembly takes 25 per cent of the federal budget.

Mr Omisore pointedly told Mr Sanusi at one point that the committee was not prepared to listen to him and that he must direct his response through the Minister of Finance, Olusegun Aganga who was also invited to clarify the budget figures of the National Assembly.

Mr Omisore, who led the questioning said Mr Sanusi reports to the Finance Minister who should answer questions on his behalf. Mr Aganga who said he was in a difficult position because he was there to clarify a statement made by someone else tried to explain the various definitions of overheads and how the figures can defer depending on context.

Mr. Omisore who was evidently angry, alleged that the CBN governor had chosen to deliberately incite Nigerians against the Assembly. He then asked Mr. Aganga to state categorically whether Mr Sanusi's statement was right or not. The minister again said the statement depends on which part of the money allocated to the assembly was being considered.

Mr Sanusi insisted that he got his figures from the director of budget's office and that he was willing to apologise if they were wrong but since he had done nothing wrong he has said nothing to apologise for. He urged the Senators to examine the contest under which he made his statement which was actually in a lecture about factors that fuel inflationary trends.

The senators however accused him of having deliberately chosen to bash the National Assembly when the budget of the Central Bank which he heads is more than that of the Assembly.

Go! You will be back, have seen many like you in the past 2 years that went back to Nigeria only to face the reality. Truth is, if you have been living in the west for a while it takes a great deal of patience and endurance to live in Nigeria. Not to talk of not having a reliable job to illiterate politicians in the government house. I was in Ibadan in 2005, 2006 and 2008. All the roads and infrastructures that were messed up were still there for all those years. I was in Ibadan this past August (2010), the same roads are still in the same conditions and even worse. I'm sure the Governor, the commissioners etc. has passed thru these roads and see that it needs fixing but they turned a blind eye to it. My brother, change your state and build that N2mill into like N10mill then go home. The people that will come for help knowing that you just came to Nigeria will ask for more than N2mill. That is Naija mentality, they think they can get money from you if they beg hard enough for it.

It depends on how long he has been in the states. . i moved back to naija after 5years, and didnt like it, worked for about 2yrs and now im back in the US. . while i know other people that have gone, and would never want to move back here. . .so people are different!.
Good, i stay in ibadan also and know what you mean. .Oyo State's case is different, the clueless Governor, cannot be compared to a state like lagos. Visit Lagos every year and im sure you will see advancement!,
About the OP i suggest he stays in the US, going to Nigeria should be the last option, he can try 1-2 states before moving to Nigeria. The east coast will be a good choice or texas.

Its obvious that soludo composed most of what was in that speech. Soludo believes that the private sector is the way for Nigeria, not the government. As a result reducing the corporate tax to 10% will give private companies opportunity to expand and create more jobs (which govt cant do). This should increase FDI also to Nigeria, which is all Soludo as always been after. I feel he has spoken well!

If only for the availability of fuel, GEJ has done wonders. Do you know how we used to have to go to the petrol station at 4.30 am just to struggle to buy a little fuel? In a deal similar to one initiated with the international companies involved in the Halliburton bribery scandal, the federal government yesterday withdrew bribery charges against Siemens transnational corporation.

Attorney General of the federation and Minister of Justice, Mohammed Adoke, told a press conference that the government’s decision to discontinue the criminal prosecution against the multinational telecommunications giant was borne out of the company’s sober expression of regret and its undertaking to be of good conduct in all its future business dealings in the country.

The company also agreed to pay a fine of N7 billion, three times the amount of bribes it was accused of giving, and promised to put in place a committee comprising of two nominees of the federal government, to monitor its activities.

“The heavy fines that have been imposed on Siemens, apart from the deterrence effect, will go a long way in financing infrastructural delivery in the country,” Mr. Adoke said.

“I appreciate the yearnings of some Nigerians for jail sentences to be imposed on those who contribute to the economic adversity of the country by way of corrupt practices, but the restitution that has been done in the case of Siemens is important in the overall process of redeeming the image of the country,” he added.

In September, the federal government said it had dropped criminal charges against construction giant, Julius Berger Plc, and its staff that were charged, along with Adeyanju Bodunde, a special assistant to former president Olusegun Obasanjo, for complicity in the $180 million Halliburton bribery scandal.

Consequently, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which was supposed to arraign the suspects before Justice Danlami Senchi at an Abuja High Court on an amended 35-count charge yesterday, removed the company from its list of suspects in the case.

The remaining accused persons, former executive director of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN), Maigada Shuaibu; former permanent secretary of the ministry of power and steel, Mahmood Sadiq Mohammed; former Nigeria Telecommunications (NITEL) general manager of finance, Emmanuel Chukwuemeka Ossai; and former MTEL managing director, Edwin Moore Momife, had asked for more time to enable them look at the EFCC’s charges against them.

The suspects will, therefore, appear before Justice Senchi on Tuesday to answer to the new 18-count charges against them.

In 2002, the accused persons were accused of conspiring with Siemens to accept valuable things and sponsoring themselves and their relations to trips to foreign countries.

I went to nigeria to have my nysc some years ago, and returned back to the states. I felt it was actually a waste of my time.

Why not do your masters or get some experience where you are, in my opinion you dont need the nysc thing, plus i hear how harsh the job market is now in Nigeria, might not be the best time to be going to that place.

If u have other reasons for wanting to go to nigeria then thats a different case, but i dont see the relevance of the nysc if u dont intend to stay in nigeria or move back in the next 5yrs.jmho

Fitch Revises Nigeria's Credit Outlook To Negative

Fitch Ratings on Friday lowered its sovereign credit outlook on Nigeria to negative from stable, citing the depletion of its windfall oil savings and heightened political uncertainty ahead of elections next year.

Nigeria's rating of BB-minus, three notches below investment grade, was affirmed, Fitch said in a statement.

The ratings agency said continued withdrawals from the excess crude account (ECA), into which Africa's biggest oil producer saves crude oil earnings above a benchmark price, and lower forex reserves were a threat to economic stability.

"The depletion of the ECA and continued gradual fall in international reserves at a time of high oil prices and record high oil production is a major concern," sovereign ratings analyst Veronica Kalema said in the statement.

"In addition, elections in the first half of next year have increased short-term political uncertainty," she said.

Standard & Poor's rates Nigeria one notch lower at B-plus.

Analysts said the Fitch revision was unlikely to affect the pricing of Nigeria's forthcoming $500 million debut global bond, which it plans to issue by the end of the year to establish a benchmark in the international market.

"Ahead of its maiden Eurobond, the market implications of the Fitch outlook revision are probably limited," said Razia Khan, lead economist for Africa at Standard Chartered.

"However, there is considerable market expectation that any eventual external debt issuance by Nigeria is likely to trade tighter than similarly-rated peers," she said.

The excess crude account is meant to guard sub-Saharan Africa's second biggest economy against sharp drops in world oil prices and was a pillar of reforms launched in 2003 backed by the International Monetary Fund.

But there is no clear legal basis to determine how ECA funds should be shared between the federal, state and local governments and the savings have fallen to less than $500 million from $20 billion in 2007 amid political wrangling.

President Goodluck Jonathan last month sent a bill to parliament to create a sovereign wealth fund, which the government says will give a more transparent and firmer legal basis to manage oil savings.

But Fitch said it would be a challenge to implement this ahead of the elections, likely to be held in April.

Yaradua had to reverse Objs last actions, the sale of the refineries, increase in fuel prices and VAT, this same fuel prices have been reduced twice, the product is no more scarce, the refineries are working now, I stay in PH and the gas been flared fromthe refinery is evidence to show that the refinery is working.

Yar'adua was deceived to believe obasanjo's policies were wrong thats why he reversed them, as of today can someone, anyone tell me what this present administration has achieved. NOTHING!

I dont support some of what Obasanjo did, but we have to be honest here, when he was in power the Nigerian Economy became stronger, plus Obasanjo was able to select people to head various office that were effective for example: Okonjo Iweala, Soludo, Dora Akunyili, Ribadu, El-rufai and the list goes on.
