The Director-General of the Nigerian Stock Exchange, Ndidi Okereke-Onyuike has been fired by the Nigerian president, Goodluck Jonathan.

Presidency sources told SaharaReporters that the controversial DG was fired through a letter of the Director General of the Stock Exchange Commission.

Just yesterday, Mrs. Onyuike's colleague, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, accused her of having mismanaged N11 billion, leading shareholders in the capital market to protest against her continuation in office.

Her removal from the powerful position was long in coming, but Mrs. Onyuike's has powerful connections with former presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Umaru Yar'Adua, whom she assisted in raising funds illegally for manipulating elections and re-elections. In a bizarre conflict of interest case, she went to raise funds in the capital market for a company created by Obasanjo known as "Transcorp," of which she was the chair of the board.

Also in 2008, she tried to raise funds illegally for the presidential campaign of Barak Obama in the United States through a phony outfit known as "Africa For Obama," but a swift disclaimer by the Obama campaign team in the US led to her arrest and the subsequent collapse of the scheme.

The Director-General of the Nigerian Stock Exchange, Ndidi Okereke-Onyuike, has been fired.

Her sack was announced in a statement signed by the Assistant Director/Head Media of the Commission, Lanre Oloyi. The statement also announced the removal of the President of the Commission, Aliko Dangote.

Mr. Oloyi, in the statement, said the decision was taken in response to "the developments in the Nigeria Stock Exchange, particularly with respect to inadequate oversight of the Exchange, ongoing litigation, allegations of financial mismanagement, governance challenges, and the inordinate delays in the implementation of the succession plan for the Exchange."

Mr. Dangote had on Tuesday accused the Director-General of mismanaging N11 billion which led operators in the capital market to protest her continued stay in office.

In a petition to the Director General of the Securities and Exchange Commission, Arunma Oteh, Mr Dangote had urged the regulatory authority to investigate irregularities in the accounts and finances of the NSE.

Mr. Oloyi said that "given the gravity of the allegations around financial mismanagement of the Exchange, the Commission has also directed the conduct of an independent investigation into the allegations."

According to the statement, the affairs of the Exchange will be managed by an interim administrator appointed by the Commission pending the selection of a new Director General.

ABUJA—FORMER Executive Vice Chairman and Group Managing Director of Intercontinental Bank Plc, Mr. Erastus Akingbola, was, Wednesday , detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, after several hours of interrogation, at its headquarters in Abuja. How long Mr. Akingbola would remain in custody had not been determined as at press time, but EFCC sources said he would spend at least a night in detention as the interrogation continues today.

It was learnt that his lawyers made frantic efforts to convince the EFCC officials to grant him administrative bail but that their pleas fell on deaf ears as they were told the interrogation was on_going.Sources said the questions put to the former Intercontinental Bank Chief Executive Officer, CEO,  bordered on deliberate breach of single obligor regulations of the Central Bank in granting loans to customers, as well as insiders, including himself.

Others were on money laundering and why he chose to escape to the UK, rather than remaining in the country to face the law like his colleagues who were removed by the CBN, last year.

Akingbola arrived the Abuja headquarters of EFCC in company of his close aides and lawyers at 10.00 a.m, and after procedural introductions settled to make statements and answering questions from the anti-graft agency.

Answering questions
EFCC spokesman, Mr. Babafemi Ojodu, confirmed to Vanguard that Akingbola was at the EFCC but said that he was answering questions from the anti-graft agency and that because he had not finished answering questions from the EFCC he had to remain in custody.One of Akingbola aides who was with him at the EFCC said that when asked why he decided to return now, Akingbola replied: “Before now the CBN had turned itself into the complainant, prosecutor and judge. There is now light at the end of the tunnel as there is hope for fair trial and justice.”

Earlier in the year, Akingbola’s counsel, Mr. Charles Nwajagu, had explained that his client was set to come back to Nigeria as soon as the suit in London was given mention in court. The case came up in London on July 14, 2010 and was adjourned till December, 2010, hence his return to Nigeria on Tuesday.Nwajagu added: “Considering the lengthy time fixed for the hearing, Akingbola willingly returned to focus on the suit he had filed against the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, over his wrongful removal from office as the CEO of the bank.

“Akingbola emphatically denies all allegations of wrong-doing or improper conduct and has challenged the legal validity of his removal from office as Group Chief Executive of the Intercontinental Bank Plc by way of Judicial Review.Akingbola is, and has always been prepared to come home, once he is sure of his personal safety and that of his family, and confident that no further steps will be taken in attempts to implicate him in other crimes as a way of forcing him to withdraw his case in court against the CBN.”

Olusegun Mimiko, the Ondo State governor, yesterday lamented the huge amount of money Nigerians spend on schooling in countries like United Kingdom and United States and said it was enough to develop the nation’s educational system.

Mr. Mimiko said this at the opening ceremony of the capacity building workshop for newly recruited staff of the state ministry of education quality assurance agency at Ade Super Hotel in Ondo. He said it was a pity that Nigerians are spending money to acquire knowledge in developed countries of the world at the detriment of the nation’s education system.

He said, “If you have opportunity to be at the airport when Nigerian students are travelling to UK for studies, you will marvel at the large number of students planning to travel out for their education.”

Rather, Mr. Mimiko challenged government at all levels to place special emphasis on the development of infrastructural facilities in public institutions from primary to tertiary level.

He noted that kidnapping and other criminal acts will continue unabated if government failed to place special emphasis on manpower development, saying the nation will continue to lag behind among nations, if workers are not given adequate training.

According to him, apart from Sub-Shara Africa, which is still lagging behind in terms of technological advancement and infrastructural development, other continents have continued to move forward.

More funds needed in government schools

He advised that more fund should be allocated for the development of infrastructure in various government owned institutions, so that they can be at par with their private counterparts.

He stressed further that the physical infrastructure in public schools in the state is receiving the desired attention, with the construction of a mega school in Akure, the state capital.

Mimiko added that the mega school, which will be equipped with modern equipment, will be constructed in areas like Owo, Ikare, Ondo and Okitipupa.

“Determined to situate Ondo State in its rightful place in the twenty first century, we are building new 21st century compliant schools,” he added.

He added that in order to sustain the state government education policy, his administration has decided to strengthen the inspectorate division to restore the lost glory of education.

“To sustain our projected outcome from this massive investment in education, we noted that the inspectorate division must be strengthened and restored to its original role of emplacing standard in our schools. That is why we set up the quality assurance agency which, in the real sense, will perform an enhanced role of the old inspectorate division of the ministry of education in a more efficient and result oriented manner,” he said.

Christine Ibie-Ibori and Udoamakaa Okoronkwo-Onuigbo, sister and mistress of James Ibori, were this morning in London bundled into jail for five years each for their roles in the former governor’s massive corruption activities in the United Kingdom.  The sentencing followed the guilty verdicts handed down by a jury last week at the Southwark Crown Court in London after the two women were found guilty of money laundering and mortgage fraud. A third accused person, Bimpe Pogoson, who was Ibori’s Personal Assistant, was discharged and acquitted by the jury. Ibori's sister, Christine Ibie-Ibori, was found guilty of 9 counts of money laundering and mortgage fraud.   Okoronkwo-Onuigbo got her five years in prison for money laundering.  The two women were accused and subsequently convicted of handling proceeds of criminal transactions on behalf of Ibori while he was governor of Delta State.

Nigerians in the UK turned out en masse in court today leading the court to move three times in order to create space for over 150 Nigerians that attended the sentencing today, but a large chunk of the attendees that had responded to the call of the Nigeria Liberty Forum to come to the event could not find a seat in the court room.

When Judge Christopher Hardy eventually began the sentencing hearing, the lawyers to the women pleaded with him to temper justice with mercy, claiming that the two women had been extensively manipulated by Ibori to commit the offences on his behalf. For the first time in court, the defense lawyers conceded that Ibori was a criminal with powerful influence. They alluded to his pervasive influence over the entire Nigerian government structure to buttress their point that the two women were too insignificant to have rejected his overtures.

However, the judge rejected their pleas. In doing so, Judge Hardy took the unprecedented step of coming down hard on the Nigerian judiciary, declaring that the Nigerian judiciary has been usurped by Ibori. He said it is the people of Nigeria that are the victims, not the two women who lived a life of luxury off the poverty of their people. He made it clear in open court that the women knew exactly what they were doing and therefore couldn't be described as victims.

Nuhu Ribadu, former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has, this evening, arrived in Nigeria after spending about two years abroad.

Mr. Ribadu, who was received by his wife and three children at the departure terminal of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, was closely guarded out of the hall by his security officers who refused to allow journalists to conduct any interviews.

The former anti crime boss arrived at the airport at about 4:40pm from the United States of America in a Delta airlines flight and left in a Mercedes Benz.

Recently, the Police Service Commission, the arm of the Nigerian Police with the powers to employ, post, and discipline senior police officers, restored Mr. Ribadu’s former rank of Assistant Inspector General, retired.

A reliable source said Mr. Ribadu will on Sunday receive a doctorate degree at Babcock University, Ogun State.

Meddler i stayed in Lagos, its actually not bad if you live and work on the Island, Abuja also is a good option if you are returning home. My experience wasnt bad but when you look at the heat, dust, security and healthcare to name a few I would rather be here and go visiting.
