The Conference of Nigerian Political Parties has condemned the presence of the chairperson of the Independent National Electoral Commission at the voter's registration of the president in his hometown on Saturday. The party, in a statement on Sunday, expressed its outrage at the presence of the INEC boss Attahiru Jega, accompanying the president, Goodluck Jonathan, during the latter's voter registration at his hometown Otuoke, Bayelsa State on Saturday. The CNPP called on the electoral umpire to ignore the style of followership practised by his predecessor in office, calling on him to "wake-up, abandon the ignoble cult followership, which converted former Independent National Electoral Commission's chairmen into puppets of former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo and be on top of his duty post as an impartial umpire." "We had expected Professor Jega to be on top of his duty post at INEC Headquarters Abuja; receiving reports of non-arrival and late-arrival of officials and materials and the worrisome report of malfunctioning DDC Machines, which has become the metaphor the exercise," the party said. The CNPP warned that "Nigerians do not want the extension of the voters registration exercise under any guise." Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) will today in Lagos State decide who becomes its standard bearer in the April 2011 presidential poll. Major hotels in Lagos have been fully booked as delegates began arriving for the primary billed to take place at Onikan Stadium. Accreditation of some of the delegates that have arrived was done yesterday while that of those that will arrive this morning will be done before the congress kicks off. The accreditation of journalists who will cover the convention was also done yesterday. Today’s presidential primary is a marked departure from the December 2006 exercise when former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar was unanimously endorsed as the presidential candidate being the party’s sole presidential aspirant then. However, three aspirants are jostling for the party’s ticket at present. They are former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, former governor of Sokoto State and presidential candidate of Democratic Peoples Party (DPP) in the 2007 presidential poll, Alhaji Attahiru Bafarawa, and Mallam Seidu Mallami. But the real contenders are Ribadu and Bafarawa. The air was fouled last night by speculations that the former Sokoto State governor had been disqualified by the party’s screening committee headed by Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi but THISDAY learnt there is no iota of truth in the speculation. Campaigns by the three aspirants have been healthy as the aspirants have been engaged in marketing themselves and their programmes. THISDAY checks among some delegates last night revealed that though Bafarawa is regarded as having strong political experience, this may not necessarily give him an easy ride at today's primary election. Ribadu, though with little experience in politics, is viewed as very formidable in the race. He enjoys tremendous goodwill of the people, which he built during the time he served as EFCC chairman.
