20 NYSC Prospective Members Kidnapped Along Owerri-Onitsha Road Rescued
The 20 prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members who were kidnapped on October 1 along the Owerri-Onitsha Road in Imo State have been rescued.
The victims, along with one other passenger who was also abducted, regained their freedom on Tuesday evening, October 7, around the Amakohia Ubi–Ndegwu forest area in Owerri West Local Government Area.
According to reports, the rescue followed a coordinated search-and-rescue operation involving security agencies.
Following their release, the victims were taken to the DSS Hospital in Owerri for medical checks. The NYSC Director-General and top security officials in the state have also visited them.
The rescue has brought relief to families and Nigerians who had been following the situation since the prospective corps members were abducted while travelling along the busy Owerri-Onitsha route.

On 9 September 2026, traditional rulers in Imo conferred on her the title “Oso Di Eme 1,” which translates to “She Does Like Her Husband.” The ceremony took place during her visit to the state, where she was also due to receive an honorary doctorate from the Federal University of Technology, Owerri. Governor Hope Uzodinma had praised her highly, describing her as the best First Lady he had encountered in more than four decades of politics.
