The socio-political, socio-economic situation in Nigeria has given the opposition more ammunition than Iran has drones buried underground.

How they have not found the right fuse to light it and cause massive political earthquakes under the ruling party is just baffling in my opinion.

This should have been the easiest elections any opposition party has ever had to win in the history of Nigeria.

Can you imagine if Nigeria was in this situation in 2015 what will have been happening by now... Can you remember where Jonathan was just weeks to that elections.... certainly not flying from one place to the other....

Reverse to 2023.

The first thing will have been a MASSIVE, MASSIVE investment in alternative fuels if you decided subsidy must go. Till date this has been haphazard. So energy cist induced inflation has been left burning out of control, spreading to consume and devastate the entire economy.

Second, you put money in peoples hands by a MASSIVE industrialization drive.

* Along the key productive, high employment sectors of manufacturing, mining, construction and agriculture.
* Privatisation and commercialisation of as many Government enterprises as possible so that the wage bill of government is reduced drastically.

If government is successful in these by the end of the first term then the second term can be dedicated to infrastructure. Because infrastructure is a demand pull investment. Infrastructure is not business but a tool to make business from national so it doesn't come FIRST, it comes NEXT.

When your economy starts to awaken it becomes clearer what kind of infrastructure you need, where you need it and how much the infrastructure should cost, because it has to be paid for by the products of productivity.

For example a saloon, or a welders shop or a small scale beverage outfit all require infrastructure. But you cannot know what kind of infrastructure to provide until the businesses exist so that you are not stuck with businesses that cannot pay for what you provide or infrastructure that is what insufficient on the other hand.

After winning in 2023, it is now clear that these guys did not sit down to blueprint a way forward towards their goals and visions. You just cannot take this sort of economic risks we have seen without an endgame in mind.

A one trillion dollar economy without a a national rail network is just wishful thinking.

Journey times are not just about shorter lengths.of highways but the myriad of obstructions along the way.

If the endless number of 'checkpoints' manned by government itself through agencies it appears to have no control over, police, military, narcotics, customs, road safety, vehicle inspection, tax and levies, etc on etc on etc....

There is just no way journey times can be pre determined. And because of this there are some industries that will just not work in Nigeria on that account alone.

To fashion a trillion dollar economy we need a radical change in culture. Way more important than money.

Calling debt “investment” doesn’t make it any less debt. Nigerians still have to repay it, with interest.

Where is the transparency? Publish every project’s cost, contractor, loan terms, completion date and expected returns.

Dangote’s success is no guarantee of government success. Public projects need independent proof of value, not convenient comparisons.

Stop hiding behind previous administrations. Nigerians need solutions and accountability, not endless blame-shifting.

Lower inflation doesn’t mean cheaper food. When prices remain high and incomes lag, ordinary families are still struggling.

A $21.7 billion borrowing plan demands serious scrutiny. Who benefits, who repays, and who answers if projects fail?

Economic growth means little to struggling households if it doesn’t translate into affordable living, reliable electricity, jobs and better wages.

Nigeria doesn’t need more grand announcements; it needs transparent spending, measurable results and accountability. Before asking Nigerians to shoulder more debt, this administration must prove, not merely promise, that the benefits will outweigh the costs.

These are the kinds of investments that really matter.

One, energy.
Two, towards industrialization.
That is practically what we should be spending all our money on as a first, critical step, to bringing the cost of production down. These are inflation bursting investments.

My only hope is that at the end of the day the consumers will have will have energy priced in such a manner to make them competitive.

So much work needs to be done to minimize cost along the value chain.

Because you have to satisfy the PEOPLE (plural) to retain power, leaders look for easier means through the so called 'alignment with the centre' aka hiding under the ALL POWERFUL central government (singular) so that failures are easily covered up. Leaving the people confused as to who to hold to account.

Today, the centre says, 'hold your governors (state) to account'. That is the state governors they are democratically shielding from accountability through the instrumentality of state craft.

So where is the incentive for performance when you are guaranteed the spear of a return if seeking a fresh term or guaranteed a shield of protection against accountability if you are not.

Mr. Diri, ride on. They got your back in the race to the bottom. What is your business with the people. Once again, We did not get to this place in Nigeria's history by mistake. We all together worked it this way by our choices.

In a way, yes, if we are speaking of avoiding the 'Dutch Disease', but this takes visionary leadership hatched out of a nest of an informed citizenry over generations.

But greedy generation after greedy generation, people of poor morals and low intellect cannot account for the enormous earnings, resources that has passed through their hands over time.

We.waste and want like the proverbial prodigal child, castigate those who call for caution then wonder and wail at the results. But the fact is simple.

Economies that INVEST, ultimately prosper, people who just spend, eventually go broke-a-borrowing.

Once again, when and how fast this country gets out of the rut depends entirely on what NIGERIA does with its income.

Tough budget in the western world means extra budgetary scrutiny. All the fat cut off tip to tail. Every sector involved. So they have operated in austerity for two decades now.

You will not find waste and government pork going round while the people are skinned alive.

Just one observation.
One thing that confuses me.
You say you are no longer borrowing to 'pay salaries'.
Then what is a budget 'booster' loan for.
I mean, when it is clear that a good proportion of the onshore component of our budgets has always circled around recurrent expenditure. aka government upkeep.

For me the red flags:

* Mounting debt, which means down the line there will be a devaluation of the naira.
* The rumour that this governments wants to gazette the reforms (who does that) meaning that the subsidy issue is not entirely over and future politicians will threaten the refining business in Nigeria as it is....
* Then the biggest one, fundamentals. The margins maybe good now but the refining business is a geo-political football, too unstable. The value lies in petrochemicals and allied products. We are not clear on how these will evolve.

Neither did I.
Too many unanswered questions viz Nigeria's economic outlook. If/when I will try will depend on when it hits foreign markets, then there will have to be a lot more data out there.
