On Friday evening, August 28th, the result of a repeat test by His Excellency the Deputy Governor of Kwara State and Chairman of the Technical Committee on COVID-19 Mr Kayode Alabi came back negative.

This means the Deputy Governor is free of the virus and would be back to his desk.

The government thanks members of the public for their support and prayers, and the medical team for their hard work.

The government equally wishes all of our remaining patients, including Her Excellency the wife of the Deputy Governor, safe recovery like the Deputy Governor, while calling on everyone to not let down their guards as every step is being taken to flatten the curve of transmission.

At about 11pm last night these two children were seen crying/walking along Cement Bus-Stop and were accosted by Police officers on patrol. They said they got into a “one-chance” vehicle on their way to tutorial lessons and were taken into a bushy area before a passer-by saw them and raised alarm.

The children fled the scene and were found by the officers. They were re-united with their family at about 12am today. Investigation is on going. #TheGoodGuys

Politics › Archbishop Duncan-Williams to W/Africa: Let’s Stop Elections, Rotate Presidents by References(op): 1:24pm On Aug 22, 2020
…Warns of uprising in the region
…Regrets African politicians dividing their people along ethnic, religious lines

…Says they have rubbished elections, benefits of democracy

Africa is sitting on keg of gun powder, says Duncan-Williams

FOLLOWING the seeming threat to democracy in Africa, especially with the recent coup de’tat in Mali, an eminent Ghanaian Charismatic preacher has proposed a startling political model to replace all the Western models that have proved incapable of solving Africa’s socio-political challenges.

In a discussion on future of African politics and West Africa in particular, the presiding Archbishop and General Overseer of the Action Chapel International (ACI) ministry with headquarters in Accra, Ghana, Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams advocated an end to party politics and in its place a coalition of all political associations that will rotate political offices without elections.

He said greed that has led to unbelievable corruption and immaturity on the side of African politicians informed his advocacy. He emphasised on Ghana and other West African countries.

“Let’s have a national agenda as a people and let’s agree that in the next 25 years there would be no elections every four years. Instead, let’s get traditional rulers, religious leaders, Labour, business community, the youths and the security agencies. Bring them all together, let’s have a national agenda of what we want in this country. For example, in Rwanda it is a law that nobody sleeps in mud houses. You don’t build a mud house, they will pull it down,” he said.

Archbishop Duncan-Williams who is also the founder and president of Prayer Summit International (PSI) and in 2017 named by the New African Magazine as one of “The 100 Most Influential Africans” believes that one of the things that will help the nations of Africa is “for us to have national coalitions from all political parties.”

Strange and unorthodox his recommendations might sound, the first non-American to lead the prayer at the inauguration of American President and Vice President, maintained that African nations should jettison elections which are almost always acrimonious and characterized by corruption and violence and jointly adopt leaders that will actualise the national vision.

According to him, “every five years, we should appoint a president from among the people that form a nation coalition. This year it is your party and the next five years it is our party. There will be no election, no party politicking, no rallies and our agenda is to follow, prosecute, perform the national agenda for the sake of the next generation. He said the pull-down syndrome of the African politician was so prominent that it has affected true democracy and growth badly. He maintained that the selfish interests of politicians have destroyed the sanctity of elections which have not endangered growth. Rather, he said politicians work for the failure of government in power just for them to win elections and that the cycle was not promoting development.

“What we are doing right now, we are not going anywhere,” he said, arguing that what is currently happening is “if I am in the opposition and you are in the office, I hold your leg down or do something to sabotage you until you leave office. And when I also come, you will do the same thing to me.”

With particular reference to Nigeria and Congo DRC which he said are rich nations but their citizens are living in abject poverty because the nations are bleeding and there is no continuity because “when you come everything that I have done, you will condemn and let the people know that I was a failure, a disappointment and you have come to fix it.

“Then, when you assume office and faced with the reality of what is on the ground, you realize that it is not easy to fix these things. And then, I am also going to expose you and let people know that you circumvented me to come, so you must not succeed. I will make sure you fail. The vindictiveness, hatred, bitterness continue and we are dividing the people on ethnic and religious lines.

“Look at Nigeria with all the resources that they have. Congo DRC with all the wealth in that country and looking at the poverty level of that country, it breaks your heart. You go in there and start asking yourself, what is going on here.

“It is the way our party politics is structured. This winner-takes-all syndrome has to stop….the habit of once I am in office, I am coming after you and your people to call them to accountability.”

The Archbishop further warned that if Africa, especially the West African sub-region, does not do something fundamental to change now, there might be a wind coming that politicians may not be able to contain.

“Jesus said any kingdom or house divided against itself cannot stand and the depth of division in this continent with the hatred that goes with it and the level of bitterness and anger, because of party affiliations, I am telling you that we are sitting on a time bomb and I am speaking as a spiritual man and as a watchman upon the walls of this country that we are sitting on a time bomb and it would not be long we will face situations and there is nothing national security organisations can do about it,” he warned.

“Something similar to the Arab uprising is coming not just to West Africa, but all over if we don‘t do something. Look at a lot of these youths who graduated from schools and are home, no jobs. Some of them are involved in car washing. You see about 10 young graduates washing one car and they will have to wait for some hours before another car comes.

“Some of them live in kiosk estates, which are situated right opposite the wealthy areas and they know some of the people in these communities, they went to school with some of their kids, some of them know their families. Some of them go into politics and they have everything.

“They drive the best cars, their children go abroad for everything. And these youths are sitting there and marveled. After a while, if we do not give them hope and a sense of direction…the most dangerous thing in life is to fight somebody who has nothing to lose and nothing to live for and who do not mind dying,” he warned, stressing that what he sees in Africa especially West Africa was both scary and worrisome.

Health › UCH Debuts With Reusable PPE To Protect Health Workers by References(op): 5:19pm On Aug 19, 2020
University College Hospital, (UCH) Ibadan, as part of measures to protect health workers from COVID-19 and other infectious disease has commenced the production of reusable Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), the first in Nigeria.

Chief Medical Director, University College Hospital, Ibadan, Professor Jesse Otegbayo, unveiling 2000 pieces of the reusable PPE on Tuesday, said the materials were made by the hospital as a response to challenges being faced by increasing cost and scarcity of imported PPE.

According to him, “the hospital intends to make more PPEs, the good thing about it is that we can sterilise it by autoclaving them and then reuse them. It is the first to the best of my knowledge that this is done in Nigeria.

“The cost of PPE has gone up by about a 10000 per cent, and we were not having enough from those who are supporting us like Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, (NCDC) Federal Ministry of Health, Oyo State government and private individuals. We started with making our own customised facemasks and face shields which we launched about 3 months ago.”

The production of PPE, he said, has opened a new frontier in health care innovation in Nigeria

Professor Otegbayo noting that just devising a means to live with the virus is not enough, added “our front liners must demonstrate that they can maintain these gowns adequately. They must also be properly deployed in the management of COVID-19 patients.”

It will be recalled that in June 2020, some untailored PPE materials worth millions of Naira were donated to the Hospital by the University of Ibadan MBBS/BDS graduating set of 2000.

These materials which have been tailored into reusable protective gowns are to be deployed in the management of COVID-19 patients.

Travel › Airport Officials Collecting Money In Place Of COVID-19 Test - Sahara Reporters by References(op): 12:45am On Aug 16, 2020
Some Nigerian airport officials have been discovered to be collecting money in place of carrying out COVID-19 tests to those entering Nigeria from other countries.

Chairman, Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, Boss Mustapha, had in July said that inbound passengers from foreign trips will be tested for COVID-19 on arrival at Nigeria airports.

Mustapha said this was aimed at protecting all stakeholders and preventing further spread of the Coronavirus disease, especially through the airports.

SaharaReporters gathered that airport officials rather than do the right thing, now collect money in place of COVID-19 tests from passengers.

“In this Coronavirus pandemic, they are still putting money above the lives of the common man. Someone very close to me came to Nigeria from Dubai on Wednesday night and they were routed to Abuja.

“Before leaving Dubai, he had already been tested and he was negative. On getting to Nigeria, their passports were seized and they were told they would be on isolation for two weeks.

“Can you believe that they gave them the option of paying to collect their passport and go without any form of tests or follow-up. He paid N50,000 and he was allowed to go, some paid as high as N100,000 to N150,000 depending on if you know someone there. As you are reading this, he has left Abuja and arrived Lagos.”

Politics › BREAKING: Ogun Lifts Weekends Lockdown by References(op):
The Ogun state government has suspended weekends lockdown in the state.

The State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, made this announcement on Friday, in a statement made available to journalists while giving an update on the efforts of the government in combating the COVID-19 pandemic in the state.

The governor explained that he took the decision after thorough deliberation, consideration and resolution with stakeholders.

He also disclosed that the decision to lift the weekend lockdown was due to the opening of worship centres for activities.

Abiodun, however, said the limitation on social gatherings not exceeding 20 people at any place is still in force.

He said, “Let me say that now that our worship centres are open for activities, the restrictions on weekends are lifted, but the limitation on social gatherings not exceeding 20 people at any place at the same time is still very much in force.

“Observation of dusk-to-dawn curfew as directed by the Presidential Task Force (PTF) i.e. between 10.00pm and 4.00am daily.

“Wearing of face masks in the public is compulsory and failure to do so is punishable.

“Only one passenger is still allowed for motorcycles and two passengers only for tricycles. Taxi cabs and buses still have 60% limitation on their carrying capacity and non-adherence attracts sanction.

“The COVID-19 Task Force in markets must continue to ensure physical distancing, availability of handwashing facilities, and use of gloves and facemasks for traders. Decontamination will continue in our markets and other public places.”

The governor also said the process of reopening Gyms, arcades, swimming pools, barber-shops, spas, beauty Salons, public parks and golf courses is in progress.

He further noted that event centres, bars, casinos, cinemas, and night clubs are still under lockdown.
