Health › Trump Sends 200 Ventilators To Nigeria by References(op): 12:52pm On Aug 11, 2020
US President Donald Trump has finally fulfilled his promise to send ventilators to Nigeria.

Trump, in a telephone conversation with President Muhammadu Buhari in April, pledged to support Nigeria’s response to COVID-19 by sending ventilators.

However, the ventilators got to Nigeria five months after the US president made the promise.

While receiving 200 ventilators on behalf of the federal government from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) at a ceremony in Abuja on Tuesday, Osagie Ehanire, minister of health, said medical items are critical to saving the lives of persons who have been severely affected by COVID-19.

The minister said life has not been the same for Nigerians since the first COVID-19 case was recorded in February.

“This donation consists of 200 ventilators, which, as we all know by now, are a critical component of the response strategy to save the lives of persons who have been severely impacted by this viral infection,” he said.

“They will certainly be of great benefit to the people of Nigeria and I wish to convey the appreciation of His Excellency Muhammadu Buhari, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and of the government of Nigeria, to President Donald Trump and the United States Government for the generous consideration and friendly gesture.

“The Federal Ministry of Health, and its public health Agency, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), have focused on providing guidance to tackle the challenges.

“Our health workers have been trained and equipped and are doing the needful to attend to COVID-19 patients and give emergency care, while not losing sight of routine and essential health services.”

Ehanire asked the US to lend its full weight to global efforts in finding vaccine against COVID-19.

“The speed and ease with which COVID-19 has spread across the globe clearly shows that it is a threat to mankind. Without the full collaboration of all nations, the threat of covid to any one part of the world is a threat to all,” he said.

K4daniel:
This is not comprehensive enough. In UK the analysis will show death number per state. E.g. Manchester currently has total death of 586, London 6,885 and England as a whole 41k.

But in Nigeria death cases are increasing to 989 across 36 states without letting us know the number of state contributing to the death cases, Why? Why can't they capture each death cases for each state. That data will expose alot of things and help in preventing more deaths.
It is all on the NCDC website.......

Health › Ganduje Is The ‘Best Performing Governor’ In COVID-19 Fight In Nigeria - APREN by References(op): 8:24pm On Aug 04, 2020
An African group of professionals called African Professionals Renaissance Network, (APREN), based in Dakar, Senegal, has selected Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje as the Best Performing Governor in Nigeria, in the fight against COVID-19.

In a letter sent to the Governor by the group’s Secretary General, Diouf Bakri Koalack, the group commended Governor Ganduje’s effort in the fight against the global pandemic.

The group emphasised that Governor Ganduje’s effort in the fight against COVID-19 in Nigeria was so glaring that the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) appreciated his effort so openly for all to know and copy.

After long and diligent study of the situation across all the states in the federation, “…we came to clearly understand that Kano State did excellently well in responding to the global pandemic. This, we assure, is as a result of the unwavering diligence and commitment of the Governor in driving the response.”

“Even before the existence of first index case in Kano State, we learned that, the state was well prepared and put everything in place waiting for any eventuality. When the first index case was in sight, Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje was up and doing in responding appropriately.”

“Kano State, under Governor Ganduje has done tremendous work in countering the health problem of COVID-19”, the group stated.

APREN, as a group of multitude professionals across African countries, beamed its search light across some selected African countries and underwent a study on how states respond to the pandemic wave.

According to them, Kano State proves to be an exemplary political space, in launching a serious fight against COVID-19, adding that, “When the state was faced with the first case all efforts were geared towards dismembering the pandemic’s strength.”

Governor Ganduje quickly formed a very powerful Task Force and filled it with professionals who clearly understand the problem. Experts in public health, among others.”

“Kano State under Governor Ganduje excels in the fight against COVID-19 more than any other State in Nigeria. Kano became the centre for the training of both health and non-health workers for the Northern Nigeria. This could not have been possible without determined political will from the Governor,” APREN
concluded.

Health › Osun Rolls Out Fines For Defaulters of COVID19 safety protocols by References(op): 6:36pm On Aug 03, 2020
Hotels/bars/clubs-N250,000 , Churches, Mosques-N100,000

With effect from Monday, August 3, 2020, the State Government of Osun will begin enforcement of stronger punitive measures which will include the deployment of Mobile Courts, imposition of fines on defaulters and more stringent enforcement exercises by the Joint Task Force.

Hotels, clubs and bars that flout COVID-19 safety protocols shall be closed and fined N250,000 before they can be reopened.

Defaulting worship centres shall be closed and fined N100,000 before they can reopen. Private Hospitals caught treating COVID-19 patients shall have their establishments shut and the owners’ practising license withdrawn

Individuals who flout the safety protocols of the State Government, after being tried, shall be sentenced to community service. Motorcycles that exceed approved loading capacity shall be seized and fined N2,000. Buses and mini-buses that violate the approved loading capacity shall be seized and fined N5,000.

Having examined the rising figures of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the State in recent times, the State Government of Osun is worried that in spite of the various measures taken to ensure the safety of its citizens, some individuals and institutions have continued to aid the spread of the virus through their flagrant disregard for government’s guidelines.

The State Government of Osun will continue to take necessary steps towards ensuring the safety of its citizens.

Signed

Mr Benedict Olugboyega Alabi

Taraba, Only State In Nigeria Yet To Report Death From COVID-19 – NCDC

Despite the rising number of COVID-19 infections in Nigeria with 878 deaths, Taraba is the only state in the country yet to record a single fatality from the virus.

Data from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) as of Saturday, August 1st, 2020, indicated that the West Africa country’s COVID-19 infections now stand at 43, 537.

Taraba, so far, have 54 cases of the virus, out of which 11 have been discharged, 43 persons on admission but no death reported.

Nigeria’s COVID-19 epicentre, Lagos has reported 192 deaths from 15,043 cases, the highest number of fatality in the country.

All Clear?
On May 17th, Taraba state discharged all 17 active cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) receiving treatment after they tested negative twice.

Governor Darius Ishaku confirmed this to reporters when he inspected a 100-bed space capacity isolation centre at the NYSC orientation camp in Sibre in Ardo-Kola Local Government Area (LGA) of the state.

No Testing Centre
The governor had also lamented the lack of a COVID-19 testing centre in the state, calling on the Federal Government to set up at least one testing centre in the area.

Although a lockdown was imposed on the state to curtail the spread of COVID-19, the government suspended the restriction of movement for residents for the Local Government Council elections held on June 30.

Return To Class
On Thursday and in line with the Federal Government’s directive, the Taraba government asked graduating students in secondary schools in the state to resume on August 4.

It explained that this was to enable the students revise for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), conducted by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).

Politics › JUST IN: Fayemi’s Aides Test Positive For COVID-19 by References(op): 9:09pm On Jul 27, 2020
No fewer than 12 aides of the Ekiti State Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi have been infected with the deadly COVID-19, a source has disclosed.

The affected aides include some of the cabinet members, domestic staff and security aides to Governor Fayemi.

This came after the governor directed all his aides and appointees to go for COVID -19 tests to ascertain their status.

Fayemi had last Wednesday announced on his verified Twitter handle that his third results of COVID 19 tests had turned out positive and had gone into self-isolation as part of measures to curb spread of the infection.

One of the aides to the governor, who craved anonymity, told our reporter on Monday.

He disclosed that those aides who have tested positive were already in isolation while others are awaiting the results of their samples.

The Ekiti State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Olawale Fapohunda earlier announced through his twitter handle @AGWaleFapohunda that his test returned positive.

He tweeted, “The result of my second COVID-19 test came out positive today. In line with the established protocols, I have commenced a period of self-isolation. In my absence, all state legal matters should be referred to the Solicitor-General of the State.”

Confirming the development, the Health Commissioner, Dr Mojisola Yaya-Kolade said the Attorney General and some members of the cabinet have been infected with the coronavirus.

Yaya-Kolade, who refused to name the name of the affected Governor Fayemi’s aides, said it was against the ethics of the profession to disclose the identity of COVID-19 patients.

Giving updates on Governor Fayemi’s health status, she said he was doing fine and in good spirit, calling on the people to adhere to all laid down guidelines and protocols towards stopping the further spread of COVID-19 in the state.

“As you are aware that the commissioner for justice announced his status on twitter and I can tell you that there are other members of the cabinet that are also positive but I must say that they are at liberty to disclose or keep to themselves for the obvious reasons,” the commissioner said.

Yaya-Kolade disclosed that the state has 67 active cases saying, “all our patients are doing fine including the governor. They are responding to treatment and we have no problem with them.”
