Health › Lagos Doctors Begin Indefinite Sit-At-Home Strike To Protest Police Harassment by References(op): 2:00pm On May 20, 2020
The Lagos State branch of the Nigerian Medical Association has directed members to embark on a “Sit-at-Home strike to protest alleged harassment of its member at the frontline of Covid-19 by security operatives.

The group accused the Police in Lagos of harassing its members through conflicting directives on the status of essential workers.

In a press statement, the association of doctors noted that “Whereas the directives of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Muhamadu Buhari, through the Presidential Taskforce on COVID 19, was clear on the exemption of essential workers including doctors and other health-workers from the ongoing lockdown/movement restrictions, the Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Mr. Hakeem Odumosu, has been issuing conflicting directives on social and mainstream media to the effect that essential workers, including doctors and other health-workers are NOT exempted”.

The group said as a result of the conflicting directives of the government and the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, it has been inundated with several cases of harassments and intimidation of doctors and other health-workers by officers of the Lagos State Police command.

The group said it was no longer safe for its members to continue to work under the present conflicting directives; pointing out that it has directed all members to proceed on an indefinite “Sit at home” strike.

Politics › Nigeria's ex-Chief of General Staff, Oladipo Diya loses wife by References(op): 11:35am On May 20, 2020
The wife of Lt Gen Oladipo Diya, Chief Deborah Folashade Diya, has died at the age of 66.

According to a press statement released by Olawale Adekoya, Special Adviser (Media & Strategy) to Gen Diya, the late Mrs Diya died on Monday.

The statement reads in part: “With grief in our hearts but gratitude to Almighty God, we announce the transition onto eternal glory of Chief Mrs Deborah Folashade Diya (JP), wife of His Excellency, Lt. Gen. Oladipo Diya (Rtd); whose death occurred on Monday, May 18, 2020. She was aged 66.

“Madam Deborah Folashade Diya was preparing and looking forward to her 66th birthday celebration on May 23rd 2020 (this week). But as man proposes, God disposes; six days ago, she took ill and was taken to the hospital, where she took her last breath on Monday, May 18.

“Otunba Folashade Deborah Diya dedicated her life to the emancipation of humanity and service of the Almighty God.

“She was a devout Christian, a loyal and dedicated wife, a loving mother, an alluring grandmother and a passionate chorister at United African Methodist (Evangelical) Church, Abule Ijesha, Yaba, Lagos. She was a chorister who sang and danced for the Lord all the way.

“Fondly called Mumsie, Chief (Mrs) D.F. Diya was a model of love, compassion and generosity until her very last moments. Her mission was one that made a great difference in the lives of many people.

“She was a silent operator who always made things work out positively: disciplined, focussed and straight forward.

“In spite of her privileged position as the wife of a former Military Vice President in the country, she didn’t live the life of celebrity or ostentation. Rather, she adopted a humble life of dedication to God.”

Politics › IGP holds First Virtual Conference With Strategic Managers Of The Force by References(op): 7:09pm On May 19, 2020
PRESS RELEASE

IGP HOLDS FIRST VIRTUAL CONFERENCE WITH STRATEGIC MANAGERS OF THE FORCE
- Orders strict enforcement of inter-state movement restriction orders

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP M.A Adamu, NPM, mni has ordered strict enforcement of the national curfew and inter-state movement restriction orders emplaced by the Federal Government as part of measures to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in the country. The IGP gave this directive to the Zonal Assistant-Inspectors General of Police and State Commissioners of Police during a virtual conference held on Tuesday, 19th May, 2020.

The conference availed the Force leadership the opportunity to engage the strategic managers, assess the security situation in the country, review operational strategies and take decisive measures aimed at evolving customized security solutions to cope with crime trends and other security challenges relating to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The IGP, while evaluating security reports from various States Commands, charged the Commissioners of Police particularly in States with recent incidents of attacks on communities, to rejig their security architecture to forestall further attacks and keep the communities safe and secure for the citizenry. The IGP also expressed concerns over reports bordering on human rights infractions between the public and personnel of the Force. He therefore called for mutual respect between the public and members of the Force and charged the Strategic Managers to place more premium on the supervision of police personnel under their watch.

The virtual conference is the first by the Nigeria Police Force since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in the country.

Politics › Wike: Hotel Demolition Is Appropriate - Former NBA President, Okocha by References(op):
…advises aggrieved persons should go to court
…says Executive Order justified

Former President of the Nigeria Bar Association, NBA, Chief Onueze Okocha (SAN) has declared that the Executive Orders signed by Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike are appropriate.

Okocha (SAN) advised anyone who is uncomfortable with the Executive Orders should approach the courts.

Chief Okocha (SAN) lauded the steps taken by the Rivers State Governor to fight coronavirus as well thought out and well advised. He said the steps will help check the spread of coronavirus.

He said: “I believe strongly that the measures are taken by the Rivers State Government, particularly the Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike are well thought out, well advised and I believe that they will to a large extent help us to avoid or at least minimize to the barest level the spread of this coronavirus that they now say causes the illness they called COVID-19.”

“I commend the government, I commend the Governor for these bold and very laudable steps”

“And the Executive Orders put in place by the State Governor are appropriate. Everybody accepts that they are calculated to secure our safety and to reduce to the barest minimum the spread of this coronavirus. So I don’t believe that anybody has quarreled with any of these orders.”

“What I have heard are people flouting those orders and Nigerians some times do not understand, some of these measures put in place, some of these regulations, these laws and orders are for there own good, and everybody should do each of their very best to comply with them.”

He noted that it was on this basis that the Rivers State Government put in place the Quarantine Coronavirus (COVID-19) and other Infectious Diseases Regulations No. 2 of 2020 which is also in line with Quarantine Act of the Federal Government.

“It’s not everything that is going to be on written law. By the authority of written law, some orders are made, some regulations are put in place and those flow naturally from the provisions of written law”

“This is why the Rivers State Government passed a law recently and we also have the Federal Act, Quarantine Act and many other such regulations that are aimed at dealing with safety and security and then health and well being of the people”

“So, anybody that is arguing that the Executive Orders are unconstitutional should know his options. He should seek legal advice and if necessary go and challenge those orders in a court of law, duly constituted”

On the demolition of Prodest Hotel, Alode, Eleme and Etemeteh Hotel, Onne in Eleme Local Government Area, Chief Onueze Okocha said the action of the Governor is justifiable given the several warnings to hoteliers not to operate within the period.

“I do not blame the Governor for his action because am aware that the regulation was put in place over two weeks ago for hoteliers and those operating drinking parlours and entertainment centres to close down at least temporarily until we get grip on how to deal this coronavirus pandemic”

“Now people have been making all kinds of comments, the press and I have heard some on the airwaves. They do not seem to know the full facts of the matter”

“Yes, there was a regulation put in place long before now regarding the lockdown we have had in Obio/Akpor and Port Harcourt City Local Government Areas. I hear that this happened in Eleme Local Government Area. Two hotels and they were warned to stop operating. Indeed, a task force was sent to remind them about the Executive Order put in place by the Governor and they got their thugs and some local boys to beat members of the task force, so the Governor left with no other option wielded the big stick.”

“We also heard people saying oooh, he was impounding vehicles and arresting people on the roads for violating the law on Obio/Akpor and Port Harcourt City Local Government Areas. What did they expect the Governor to do? Fold his hands and watch people to openly and brazenly flout what we know are regulations put in place in accordance with law and order”

“So, the Governor I think was justified in wielding the big stick on the hoteliers and anybody who feels that he has any reason to dispute should approach the appropriate quarters and let us see how far that approach will get him.”

Politics › Lockdown: Umahi Suspends Commissioner, Perm Sec, Others Over ‘porous’ Boundaries by References(op): 6:45pm On May 10, 2020
‌Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State has ordered a one-month working suspension of the state’s Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Chief Samuel Okoronkwo, over alleged boundary security compromise and negligence.

Umahi gave the order on Sunday in a statement he personally posted on the social media and confirmed by the state’s Commissioner for Information, Mr Uchenna Orji.

He said the suspension meant forfeiture of one month salary.

The governor also ordered a one-month working suspension of the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Dr Augustine Nwuzor.

The governor expressed dismay over an alleged high level of compromise and negligence of duty he witnessed on May 9, while inspecting the state’s boundaries at Afipo North and Ivo LGA.

He threatened to sack them if there were no improvements.

He said, “All development centre coordinators of Afikpo North and Ivo LGA’s are hereby suspended from office and should handover to the ‘Member One’ in their various development centres including their official vehicles.

“All political appointees from these councils are to remain on half salary until normalcy returns including all traditional rulers from both councils.

“Commissioner for LGA and Permanent Secretary of LGA are to serve one-month working suspension without salaries and if there is no improvement in the running of LGA, they will be removed.

“The chairmen and leadership of town unions in Ebonyi are hereby suspended and I will dissolve all town unions this May if situations do not improve.”

He further threatened that all health workers in the state absent from their duty posts from Sunday will be sacked, pledging to do more in the coming days to secure the peoples’ lives.

“What I saw on Saturday at Ivo LGA left me worried about our people’s honesty in doing this job.

“I was disappointed with what I saw there and also at Afikpo North LGA between 6.30 pm and 12.am.

“I ‘arrested’ over 10 passenger-buses with over 50 passengers coming from Abia, Rivers and Lagos.

“People manning the roadblocks ‘took’ bribes and allowed them to pass and I had no option than to arrest those said to be doing the work but were only taking bribes.

“They are presently at the Abakaliki quarantine centre and there was no presence of town unions in those locations,” he said.

The governor stated that there was no form of monitoring by the LGA and internal security commissioner, council chairmen, development centre coordinators, describing the situation as a ‘shame’.

“The LGA commissioner is hereby directed to account to me before Wednesday, May 13, the expenditure of 15million released to each LGA chairman for this pandemic.

“I must see if I can raise boys in each of the 140 communities to do this job and then review all appointments in line with those who can help in this fight to save our people.

“I, however, observed that good work took place in the day, but at night only the army in one location and local boys stayed.

“I am still depressed with the commitment of our security agencies despite my efforts in paying allowances,” he said.

Politics › Statement On The Return Of The Abacha Stolen Millions by References(op): 4:09pm On May 05, 2020
STATEMENT ON THE RETURN OF THE ABACHA STOLEN MILLIONS FROM THE UNITED STATES AND JERSEY

On Monday, May 4, 2020, some $311 million US Dollars - stolen from the citizens of Nigeria during the Abacha regime - were safely returned to our country from the United States.

These funds have already been allocated, and will be used in full, for vital and decades-overdue infrastructure development: The second Niger Bridge, the Lagos-Ibadan and Abuja-Kaduna-Kano expressways - creating tens of thousands of Nigerian construction jobs and local skills, which can then be useful in future projects.

Part of the funds will also be invested in the Mambilla Power Project which, when completed, will provide electricity to some three million homes - over ten million citizens - in our country.

The receipt of these stolen monies - and the hundreds of millions more that have already been returned from the United Kingdom and Switzerland - are an opportunity for the development of our nation, made far harder for those decades the country was robbed of these funds.

Indeed, previous monies returned last year from Switzerland - some $320 million US dollars - are already being used for the government’s free school feeding scheme, a stipend for millions of disadvantaged citizens, and grain grants for those in severe food hardship.

Without these funds, the fight against Covid-19 would be even tougher.

The latest return is a testament to the growing and deepening relationship between the government of Nigeria and the government of the United States.

Without the cooperation both from the UK Government, the US Executive branch and US Congress, we would not have achieved the return of these funds at all.

For years many countries deemed successive Nigerian administrations as too corrupt, too venal and too likely to squander and re-steal the stolen monies - so they did not return the funds.

Today, US, UK and other jurisdictions have found the partnership with the nation of Nigeria they can finally trust.

The Buhari Administration is committed to - and is enacting - total and zero tolerance to corruption in politics and public administration.

The days when government was seen and used by the political class as their personal ATM to empty are over.

The time of better governance and clean hands in the affairs of state is here to stay.

Politics › Jonathan Remembers Yar'adua 10 Years After. Says He Was 'Selfless' & 'Modest' by References(op): 9:42am On May 05, 2020
It has been a decade since His Excellency President Umar Musa Yar'Adua was snatched by the cold hands of death. On this day, every year, his image fills our consciousness as a mark of his selflessness, typical modesty and exceptional flair.

He was a President like no other who lived and died for the sake of his country. He stood on the side of the people, toiling day and night to make their lives better.

President Yar'Adua built strong bridges of hope, love and understanding for which he became a force for national unity and positive change across our blessed land.

In many ways he stood out. He had an accommodating spirit and enormous goodwill that secreted a web around our national fault lines to strengthen the bond; thus leaving for his successors the task of reinforcing the band.

President Yar'Adua no doubt left enduring legacies in his wholehearted devotion to the ideals of democracy, respect for peoples' rights, freedoms and reason for living as well as commitment to the rule of law and laws of equity and justice.

I will continue to remember President Yar'Adua as a colleague and boss who became my brother and friend.

Health › Ondo: Driver, 2 Others Carrying COVID-19 Patients, Blood Samples, Test Positive by References(op): 4:32pm On May 04, 2020
A driver at the Infectious Disease Hospital, Akure, Ondo State, has tested positive for Coronavirus.

A source at IDH disclosed to our correspondent that the driver was showing symptoms of the virus few days ago before his sample was later collected for test.

It was gathered that the driver always carried blood samples and patients for the IDH since the outbreak of Coronavirus in the state.

Two casual workers attending to patients at the same hospital also tested positive for the virus.

All three persons have since been isolated at the same facility in Akure.

Governor Rotimi Akeredolu described the driver and the two casual workers as "heros", adding that the state was ready to compensate them for their efforts when they recover from the virus.

He said, "Both the driver who carries samples to test centres outside the state and the two casual workers in the wards took the highest risk in helping their fellow human beings. They are our heroes.

"I want their families and loved ones to know that Ondo State Government stands firmly with them and will walk with them through these difficult times until they recover and fully get back their daily lives.

"To further demonstrate our understanding and total commitment to supporting the frontline risk bearers, I have directed immediate absorption into the public service of the infected casual workers at the IDH.

"I have also approved that all health workers in the state be paid 50 per cent of their consolidated basic salary as hazard allowance."
