With baseball caps and scarves covering their faces, only their serious eyes are visible as a dozen children stand to attention, rifles by their side. In the heart of the violence-plagued Mexican state of Guerrero, learning to use weapons starts at an early age. In the village of Ayahualtempa, at the foot of a wooded hill, the basketball court serves as a training ground for these youths, aged between five and 15. The children practice with rifles and handguns or makeshift weapons in various drill positions for a few hours every week. ‘Position three!’ yells instructor Bernardino Sanchez, a member of the militia responsible for the security of 16 villages in the Guerrero area, which goes by the name of Regional Coordinator of Community Authorities (CRAC-PF). Guerrero is one of the poorest and most violent parts of Mexico, with one of the country's highest murder rates because of drug gang wars over the trade in opium and marijuana. - Battle against cartels - In the face of indifference from the authorities, 600 people voluntarily joined the militia force to fight organized crime. They included children. At Sanchez's order, the young people perform a drill and throw themselves face down on the ground in a cloud of dust, rifles aimed towards an imaginary enemy. Their opponent may be imaginary for the exercise but the drug cartel violence which plagues the region is all too real. A week ago, nine men and a child -- musicians and their assistants -- were kidnapped and tortured, and their charred bodies were found inside their two vans at the bottom of a ravine. Mexican authorities immediately recognized the handiwork of the local Los Ardillos cartel but did not take any action against it. Exasperated by official indifference, leaders of communities across the region, including Ayahualtempa, decided to take matters into their own hands and teach their children to shoot. Thirty children are in training. Those under the age of 13 are not yet taking part in patrols but are ready to fight in the event of an attack by Los Ardillos, as happened in May 2015 when the cartel entered the town hall of Chilapa and kidnapped more than 30 people. Since then, clashes between the militia and the drug traffickers have not abated. Near the training ground are some abandoned ramshackle huts. Inside are clothes, children's shoes and bags of rotten corn cobs -- everything left as it was when the occupants fled. - 'They must defend themselves' - The situation has become so untenable for the inhabitants of the region that parents have agreed to let their children join the militia. ‘I wanted to study, but since the school is close to the area where Los Ardillos operates, I preferred the community police ... They were about to capture me,’ said 13-year-old Gustavo. The boy said he ‘feels good’ holding his .22 caliber shotgun and already knows how to use and clean it. Gustavo's father Luis has been a member of the militia for three years. His other son, Gerardo, 15, is also learning to ‘defend himself and his family,’ he said during training. ‘The children decided to support us,’ said Luis, who recalls the day when his two children told him they wanted to arm themselves and leave school. Luis, who said he went to ‘great lengths’ to buy hunting rifles for his children and his own weapon, believes the danger is the same for the patrols as for municipal police who go to school ‘unarmed, defenseless’ at the mercy of drug traffickers. The children train in various shooting positions for two hours a week. The idea is that they also learn to fend for themselves ‘in case they are orphaned,’ Luis said seriously. All of them wear olive green militia T-shirts that are far too large for some of the younger recruits. ‘My children now have more courage than fear. They know how to handle their weapons. When armed groups force their way into a community, they must stand up and defend themselves,’ Luis added. Guerrero governor Hector Astudillo on Friday made his first appearance in the region since taking office four years ago. He took the opportunity to criticize the training of children and negotiate with the militia over lifting roadblocks. Many children ‘have lost their parents,’ said Bernardino, who does not want to see others traumatized by the murder of their loved ones. On the basketball court, it is break time. The children grab a basketball and one aims for the frayed net, a too-large rifle slung behind his back. https://newsinfo.inquirer.net/1219532/mexican-children-take-up-arms-in-the-fight-against-drug-gangs Mynd44 Lalasticlala Seun

Abubakar Malami, attorney-general of the federation, says Amotekun, a regional security outfit established by governors of the south-west remains illegal. Malami’s initial position had sparked a nationwide outrage, with some notable southern leaders accusing the federal government of discriminating against the south-west since there were similar outfits in the north. In a statement on Thursday, the attorney-general of the federation said his position on the scheme has not changed. “By asking for the state governments of the Southwestern Nigeria to proceed to enact the necessary laws, in justifying the legality of the establishment and operation of Amotekon, Mr. Femi Falana is reaffirming and reiterating the Federal Government’s stance that the establishment of the operation currently is illegal,” the AGF said in a statement which Umar Gandu, his spokesman, issued on his behalf. “No amount of effort to hide the truth will work. People could be carried away by sentimental or emotional inclinations, but truth remains apparently palpable. “The bottom line is that the current Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria does not accommodate formation of regional security architecture. This is a fact which is undisputable and undeniable. “Mr. Falana was prevaricating and circumlocuting using evasive techniques when he was asked by the media to justify the presence of lacuna within the law which could establish or protect the concept of regionalism in any operation in the country. He was unable to supply answer to the question and failed to cite relevant laws that back the argument.” Malami said the outfit is not backed by any law, whether federal or state, so it cannot be regarded as a legal organisation. “It is interesting that no matter the situation truth prevails. This arrangement called Amotekun is not backed by any law neither at the State nor at the Federal Government level. Amotekun, therefore, remains unconstitutional and illegal as already indicated,” he said. “The Federal Government appreciates that legally minded Nigerians have start to eschew emotions by offering legal comments on the matter as against being carried away by other inclinations.” The statement was issued at a time Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo is meeting with south-west governors over Amotekun. https://www.thecable.ng/just-in-amotekun-remains-illegal-malami-insists https://www.punchng.com/malami-insists-amotekun-illegal-says-falanas-u-turn-vindicates-fg https://thenationonlineng.net/breaking-fg-maintains-amotekun-is-illegal/ https://www.vanguardngr.com/2020/01/breaking-amotekun-remains-illegal-agf-malami-insists/ |
A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Yekini Nabena has asked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to call the Resident Electoral Commissioner in Akwa Ibom state, Mike Igini to order, accusing him of working against the APC in Saturday’s rerun election in the state. Nabena who is also the Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the APC complained of Igini’s antecedents was very clear which he said saw him compromise, manipulate and swing the 2019 elections conducted in the state in favour of the PDP. He recalled that INEC cancelled elections in the Essein Udim Local Government Area of the state and ordered a rerun scheduled for Saturday. In a statement in Abuja Thursday, Nabena said “the Resident Electoral Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission in Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Mike Igini despite proven incidents of bias against the APC continues to preside over INEC in Akwa Ibom state. Igini controversially declared every candidate of PDP winner in 2019 elections. “It is in record that Sen. Goodwill Akpabio challenged INEC and the Court of Appeal upheld his appeal, nullified PDP’s fraudulent victory and ordered retrieval of the certificate of return given to the PDP Senator by INEC. However, the Court of Appeal ordered repeat election in only Essein Udim Local Government Area of the state, Sen. Akpabio’s LGA. “Sen. Akpabio now a Minister for the Niger Delta has opted out of the repeat election citing his current higher responsibilities to the Nation and the continuous occupation of INEC office by a compromised REC. “A clear proof of compromise is the case Sen. Akpabio’s state constituency where APC won and INEC refused to issue certificate of return till date. In fact without the order of court Mike Igini and INEC plan to repeat state constituency election in Essein Udim Local Government Area on Saturday. “APC won a Federal House of Representatives seat in Cross River and INEC changed the REC for Saturday’s rerun. In Akwa Ibom the REC did well for PDP hence he is retained for all reruns where APC won. “Infact the then operations head in 2019, Mr. Okereke who retired has been recalled and posted to Akwa Ibom to help bury APC electorally. Mike Igini has brought his blood relation, Mr.Vincent Ogene who is serving as an electoral officer in Anambra state to man his planned rigging in Essien Udim LGA of Akwa Ibom state. “Hon. Nse Ntuen won Essien Udim state constituency election and was declared winner and returned elected by INEC’s Prof Ignatius Uduk but Mike Igini refused to give him certificate of return because he was of APC. The loser went to the tribunal and the PDP case was struck out. PDP appealed to court of Appeal which ruled its case was rightly struck out at the lower tribunal. “In a twist INEC cross appealed stating that lower tribunal having struck out the PDP case should not have reordered that certificate of return be given to the APC winner. The Appeal Court agreed meaning status quo as at date of first return was restored. Curiously, INEC interpreted this to mean it should conduct fresh election. Hence, without a court order Mike Igini has ordered fresh state Assembly election in Essien Udim LGA. “Igini is personally campaigning for PDP, abandoned 31 Electoral Officers (EOs) and brought a cousin, Mr. Vincent Ogene from Delta state who is an EO in Anambra State and who did well for PDP in 2019 elections in Anambra state. INEC must urgently call its Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mr. Mike Igini to order and stop this imminent electoral robbery.” https://thenationonlineng.net/rerun-polls-call-akwa-ibom-rec-igini-to-order-nabena-tells-inec/ |

Armed Policemen, DSS storm venue of Amotekun rally in Ogun Dozens of security Operatives from the Nigeria Police, Department of State Security Service (DSS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), most of them armed on Monday morning positioned themselves at Panseke, a bustling area of Abeokuta, Ogun State, following planned rally by the Yoruba Youth Congress(YYC). The rally which is expected to be coordinated simultaneously in the six Southwest States is aimed drumming support for the Western Nigeria Security Network codenamed Amotekun as well as sends message to the Federal Government that nothing should be put in the way to kill the dream. Although the rally is yet to commence but the armed Operatives from the Police, DSS, NSCDC and other special units of the Police had stormed the venue ahead of time and stationed themselves at strategic locations by the entrances and the surrounding streets. Some on plain clothes security Operatives were also sighted discretely taking vigil at different access ways to Panseke. Panseke derives its boisterousness and name to the June 12, 1993 struggle, having being theatres of most borne fires and rallying ground for June 12 crusaders and democracy struggles. The Commissioner of Police in Ogun State, Kenneth Ebrimson, who visited the Amotekun Rally venue said the people have rights to peaceful assembly as enshrined in the constitution but added that security Operatives were put on ground to forestall any breach of peace. Ebrimson warned whoever tries to harass or intimidate other law abiding Nigerians from engaging in their legitimate business in the name of rally would have the full weight of the law “descending ruthlessly on him.” https://thenationonlineng.net/armed-policemen-dss-storm-venue-of-amotekun-rally-in-ogun/ |

Former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Timi Frank, has said that governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) were the major problem of opposition party as some of them were lobbying to travel with President Muhammadu Buhari. Frank said aside Governor Wike of Rivers state, many of other opposition party governors are daily lobbying to be in the good books of Buhari, hence they don’t talk on national issues affecting Nigerians negatively. Reacting to a media report that the PDP was planning to stage a nationwide protest against the Supreme Court ruling in Imo, Frank said the move was belated. “PDP’s planned protest is medicine after death, why didn’t they protest when the former CJN Onnogen was forcefully removed from office? Why didn’t they protest when the last presidential election was rigged in favour of APC by INEC and the Army? “Why didn’t they protest when Supreme Court unjustly threw out presidential election appeal? Today Nigerians are seeing the result of the forceful removal of Onnogen from office; it’s a bit late for PDP to protest.” He specifically condemned in strong term the Abia state governor, Okezie Ikpeazu, who was seen on Friday travelling to London with General Buhari at a time his colleague in Imo, Emeka Ihedioha, was removed as governor. In a statement made available to newsmen in Abuja on Saturday, Frank said it is shameful that PDP has 16 governors and only one or two is committed to the cause of the party. “Some PDP governors are the problem of Nigeria, some of them go to the extent of lobbying the cabal to travel out with the President so as to be on his good books, they are selfish, corrupt, over ambitious and shameless. “Some of them betrayed the PDP during the last presidential election, and gave the APC 25% in their states in return for not being prosecuted after they leave office and to win their 2nd term.” According to Frank, a sitting PDP governor said: “If you say you dey there (APC), know I am already there. If you go to APC, I am an APC member. If you go to PDP, I am there”, what did the PDP as a party say or do? The PDP as a party could not caution or penalize him and now they want to protest? “Apart from the governor of Rivers state Nyesom Wike and sometimes, the Benue state governor Samuel Ortom, other PDP governors are PDP by the day and APC by night; they fraternize with the APC thereby rendering PDP incapacitated and unable to function properly and cannot play the role of an effective opposition. “Nigerians are being taken for a ride by the APC administration and the PDP can’t do anything to checkmate government because most of the PDP members and especially some governors are compromised, otherwise they could have fought Buhari the same way the opposition governors fought Jonathan, whereas those governors refused to compromise during Jonathan’s tenure. “Nigerians should observe that apart from Governor Wike and Governor Ortom, no other PDP governor dares to criticize Buhari and even make any statement about national issues. If there is any governor that Buhari and the APC would have loved to remove, it is Governor Wike; this is because he is not PDP by the day and APC by night, which is the reason why he has the support of his people and despite all the persecution by the federal government, he still stands tall.” While urging other PDP governors to emulate Governor Wike so that posterity will judge them well, Frank said: “It is better for these governors to decamp to APC so Nigerians and the world can see them for who they truly are, after all once you decamp to APC; all your sins (Looting and corruption) are forgiven. “To show you how incompetent some of the PDP governors are, the Abia state PDP governor Okezie Ikpeazu, flew to London with Buhari and some APC members in the presidential jet, barely 3 days after a PDP governor colleague of his from the same South-east was robbed through the Supreme Court and his seat given to APC. He was seen smiling and grinning from ear to ear like a child that just tasted chocolate for the first time in his life. “Instead of telling APC the truth, Ikpeazu is fraternizing with them the same day the PDP was having its NEC meeting, He abandoned the meeting and flew with Buhari to London, as that is more important to him than attending PDP meeting, the party that gave him a platform to become governor. “The wicked flee when no man pursueth, no amount of fraternizing with Buhari and the APC can save any looting governor when the day of reckoning comes. “Nigerians are helpless today at the hands of APC because some PDP governors have compromised for their selfish interest but they should remember that they are not God, only God knows how all these will pan out tomorrow,” Timi Frank said. https://dailypost.ng/2020/01/18/timi-frank-reveals-pdp-govs-ties-with-buhari/ |
Gunmen suspected to be bandits have killed the village head of Rumache in Kukoki ward of Shiroro local government area of Niger state, Mallam Ahmad Yakubu Rumache and kidnapped 17 villagers in four other communities in the local government area. The Nation gathered that the bandits invaded the village at about 2 am on Friday. The bandits also dispossessed the villagers of their valuable belongings before setting their houses ablaze. They also reportedly abducted the son of the murdered village head. The attack came some hours after similar acts by armed bandits on Magami, Gungu, Zongoro and Masuku Villages in Shiroro local government area where 17 people were kidnapped. It was gathered that several villagers sustained various degrees of injuries from gunshots and other dangerous weapons used during the attacks. The Chairman of Shiroro local government area, Mallam Suleiman Dauda Chukuba, confirmed the attacks. He said the villagers were taken unaware and it was difficult to ascertain the number of bandits who invaded the village. “The attack happened at midnight around 1 to 2 pm. They were many and they took the villagers unaware. No one could ascertain their numbers because it was night. “As for casualties, only the village head of Rumache was killed while his son was kidnapped. However, a day before, the bandits invaded four communities and kidnapped 17 people in Magami, Gungu, Zongoro and Masuku Villages communities,” he stressed. He stated that the Police from Erena Division and some vigilantes are currently scouring the bushes and the villages. The Chairman then appealed for urgent government intervention stressing that Shiroro local government area needs nothing other than prayers and government intervention. “I need government intervention because of the way this is going, we need government intervention.” One of the children of the deceased village head, Al-Mustapha Ahmed ,also confirmed the death of his father, expressing shock over the attack. He lamented that the government has deliberately remained complacent on the lingering security challenges rocking the whole Shiroro local government. According to Ahmed: “Attacks of this nature have almost become a daily routine, thereby constantly subjecting unarmed and peace-loving people to ceaseless tension, fear, anxiety, and panic. “It is no longer news that inhabitants of these affected parts of the local government have since been robbed of security, forcing us to scamper helter-shelter for security and safety somewhere else. People have been displaced and ironically made circumstantial but avoidable refugees in their own ancestral land.” https://thenationonlineng.net/just-in-bandits-kill-niger-village-head-abduct-17-others/ Mynd44 Lalasticlala Oam4j |

thundafire:- Ubah was alleged to have used forged NECO certificate to contest the election A lawmaker representing Anambra south at the Senate has lost the appeal to rescind the court judgement that nullified his election into the National Assembly. Vanguard reports that a high court sitting in Kubwa area of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, on Friday, January 17, declined to set aside its judgement on the nullification of the election of the candidate of Young Peoples Party (YPP), Ifeanyi Ubah, for allegedly using a forged National Examination Council (NECO) certificate to contest the senatorial election that held in the state on February 23, 2019. Legit.ng gathered that the court, in a ruling by Justice Bello Kawu, re-affirmed the order it made on April 11, 2019, which directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to withdraw the Certificate of Return it issued to Ubah and issue a fresh one to Obinna Uzoh of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who came second in the poll. It would be recalled that Ubah had approached the court to set aside the judgement which he insisted occasioned a grave miscarriage of justice against him. He decried that he was neither served with the court processes nor hearing notice with respect to the suit before the court proceeded to deliver the judgement against him. Following his application for stay of execution, Justice Kawu, on December 4, restrained the Senate president from swearing-in Uzoh, pending the hearing and determination of the motion challenging the verdict. The court equally ordered all the parties, including the INEC to maintain status quo till it decides the merit in Ubah’s contention. In a ruling on Friday, January 17, Justice Kawu, however, held that Senator Ubah’s application to vacate its judgement lacked merit and accordingly dismissed it. It equally dismissed a motion another claimant to the PDP senatorial ticket, Chief Chris Uba, filed to be joined as an interested party in the substantive suit marked CV/3044/2018, which was filed before the court by an electorate in the state, Anani Chuka. |

Former Super Eagles striker, Odion Ighalo, has admitted that he left Premier League side, Watford to join Chinese side, Changchun Yatai back in 2017 because of ‘money’. Ighalo scored 33 goals in 82 matches for Watford during his spell at the English club. “There’s lot of reasons I went there [China]. I wasn’t playing much in Watford and I did not want to keep sitting on the bench,” Ighalo told the Watford Observer. “Watford fans don’t know it but I had an offer from Crystal Palace on the table and West Bromwich but the club was looking for big money and that’s why I accepted Changchun Yatai at the time. So, instead of me sitting down there and not playing I had to move. “When the opportunity came for me I accepted it because China could pay what Watford wanted. But this is past tense now. I am happy and Watford are happy because they made a lot of money with me. And they are still my team in the Premier League. “I don’t know about other players. Maybe they go there for different ambitions. Me? Yes, I went there for the money I am honest but I don’t know why other players go there for.” He added: “The league is really growing, they have a lot of foreign coaches and players who improve the league. “All I can say is that the Chinese Super League is improving every day and I am very happy about my choice. Regrets? No everything is going well, I am happy there and working hard.” https://dailypost.ng/2020/01/16/epl-i-left-watford-for-china-because-of-money-odion-ighalo/ |

Reports have emerged that a Nigerian, identified as Dauda Onoruoiza, was reportedly among the victims of the Ukraine International Airlines flight 752 crash in Iran on Wednesday. Reports said Onoruoiza was working with Boeing on three months training in Ukraine and was attached to the Boeing 737-800 to fly with and study the mechanical noise and report back to the company when the crash happened. DAILY POST recalls that Iran’s admitted that its military actually shot down the Ukrainian passenger plane. Iran made the admission on Saturday days after denying having anything to do with the crash. It, however, attributed the incident to human error while apologising to its citizens and families of the victims. The nationality of passengers and crew aboard the plane were given as 82 Iranians, 63 Canadians, 11 Ukranians, 10 people from Sweden, four from Afghanistan and three from the United Kingdom and Germany respectively. Onoruoiza may have possessed the passport of one of the countries listed above. The governor, Chief David Umahi had last year December, 2019, during an EXCO meeting promised that workers in Ebonyi State will start receiving the new minimum wage, effective from January 1st, 2020. He had equally directed the State Accountant General and the 13 Chairmen of LGAs to seek for overdraft and ensure the payment of the said minimum wage to workers in local government areas effective from January 10 to enable them start the new year with ease. But some civil servants, who spoke to DAILY POST in Abakaliki, capital of Ebonyi state, lamented that the said payment was just a little adjustment in salary of workers and not minimum wage. According to one of them “They said it is a minimum wage but it is not. It is just a little increment. “We are not happy with the amount. If they had told us that it was an increment, it would have been better. Indeed, they said it is minimum wage but it is a disappointment on the workers.” Another civil servant, who also spoke, said “I am in level 8, what they added to my salary is only N1000. I am not happy with the situation.” Another civil servant, who is a teacher said: “I can tell you, the whole money added to the salaries of civil servants in the state may not be up to N2 million. Why should they say that they are paying minimum wage, when it is obvious that they are not, but an increment?” He stressed. Meanwhile, the governor of the Ebonyi state, Chief David Umahi, according to investigation, is the first governor to pay minimum wage in the south east geopolitical zone. The state government while briefing journalists on Friday through the State Commissioner for Information and State Orientation, Barr Orji Uchenna Orji said that the payment of the Minimum Wage was in consonance with the agreement reached by the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC and the State government. According to him, the payment of the Minimum Wage to workers was in line with the Governor’s promise of improving the welfare and standard of living of workers at all levels. The Commissioner further noted that apart from the payment of the National Minimum Wage, which commenced today (yesterday), all public office holders have so far received their salaries. “I wish to use this medium to inform the general public of the payment of Minimum wage by the State government. The government has again kept it’s promise of paying minimum wage in the country. Ebonyi is the first to pay minimum wage in the Southeast geopolitical zone. “The governor has not renege in his responsibility. The government negotiated with NLC and consensus was reached. He has paid the 13 LGA and State workers. In addition to the 13 month, he paid the minimum wage. He has the welfare of workers at heart. It will spur them to work better. He is taking the lead.” He said. Orji also added that the State government had begun the enumeration of all unemployed Ebonyi citizens in order to make them self reliant. https://dailypost.ng/2020/01/10/minimum-wage-ebonyi-govt-merely-added-n1000-to-our-salary-workers/ |
