Ozekhome kuku kee me ![]() |
A former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mohammed Adoke (SAN), on Monday, expressed his preference to be remanded in the Kuje Correctional Centre to the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. His lawyer, Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN), spoke on his behalf shortly after he was arraigned on fresh money laundering charges at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday. Adoke was arraigned alongside Aliyu Abubakar, who was accused of paying dollar equivalent of N300m in Adoke’s account in September 2013 in violation of the Money Laundering Act. Ozekhome was arguing his client’s bail application when he noted that his client was produced in court by the EFCC from the Federal Medical Centre near Jabi, Abuja, where he had been admitted for treatment. After the defendants took their pleas, the prosecuting counsel, Mr. Bala Sanga, had urged the court to remand them in the custody of the EFCC pending when their bail applications would be heard and determined. The defence lawyers immediately noted that they already filed their bail applications and had been responded to by the prosecution. While arguing his bail application, Ozekhome who urged the court to grant bail to the former AGF in liberal and affordable terms and conditions said his client would prefer to be remanded in the Kuje Correctional Centre, instead of the custody of the EFCC. He said, “The first defendant voluntarily returned to the country. There is his statement attached to show that he returned to the country voluntarily. “He did not run away. We have attached an exhibit to show that he went for his Masters’ study abroad. “We have deposed to the affidavit about his health conditions. The prosecution themselves brought him to court from the Federal Medical Centre near Jabib in Abuja, this morning. “We also plead that he be taken to the Kuje Correction Centre, a euphemism for Kuje prison pending when he meets his bail conditions to avoid the mental psychological strictures he goes through in the custody of the EFCC. “My lord we pray that he be granted bail in liberal and affordable terms and conditions so that he can take care of himself. “The law says, ‘come and stand trial’, it did not say ‘come and sit trial or come and prostate trial’. “My lord as you can see, the first defendant who is less than 60 is already bent with age.” https://punchng.com/breaking-adoke-rejects-efcc-custody-prefers-kuje-prison/ |

The Kano State Government has dissociated itself from the newly floated Northern security network version codenamed ‘Operation Shege Ka Fasa’. Governor Abdulahi Ganduje disclosed this on Friday while addressing State House Correspondents after leading a large number of Kano State eminent personalities on a courtesy visit on President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. Ganduje disclosed that the Kano State Government had invested so much in security at various levels and it would be unnecessary to consider any other external arrangement. He boasted the state’s security architecture had turned Kano into a trap for criminals. He said that the state provides conducive environment for the security agencies, adding that Command and Control Centre was established where security agencies communicate with one another. Besides, the state has constructed army training Centre at Falgore, which he said is the biggest forest in the country, stressing that about N500 million had been committed to the project. The Governor also said his administration’s free and compulsory education from basic to secondary levels was already addressing the dual menace of mass out of school children and early girl child marriage. The governor, whose large entourage was without Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, said talks were still on to resolve the disagreement between the Emir and the Kano State Government. https://thenationonlineng.net/breaking-kano-doesnt-need-shege-ka-fasa-ganduje/ |
Saturday’s Local Government Congresses of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State is under threat, following an order of interim injunction by an Edo High Court in Ekpoma, retraining the party and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from announcing and recognizing the wards Congresses results conducted on February 1, 2020. The presiding Judge, Justice J.O. Okeaya-Inneh also restrained PDP and INEC from using the result of the 192 ward Congresses for the local government areas scheduled to hold tomorrow, February 8, pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice already filed in suit no. HEK/9/2020. The Judge also granted the claimants, Mr. Gallant Eruaga, a former member of the Edo State House of Assembly; Victor Idiakheoa; and Jide Obalowoshe an order of interim injunction restraining the defendants, its agents from conducting the local government Congresses pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice. Justice Okeaya-Inneh held that the applicants have satisfied the guidelines for the grant of the order sought as enjoined in the landmark case of Kotoye vs CBN (1989). In the enrollment order signed by the assistant chief registrar, dated February 6, the trial judge adjourned the case to February 24 for hearing. https://www.sunnewsonline.com/edo-high-court-restrains-pdp-from-conducting-lg-congresses/ |

The National Examination Council (NECO) on Thursday released the November/December Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE) results with Ogun topping the chart of candidates’ performance by states with 91.42 percent. The comparative analysis of candidates’ performance also shows that Akwa Ibom state came second with 87.97 percent, while Zamfara occupied the last position with 12.90 percent even though only 230 candidates sat for the examination from the state. On the malpractice cases by states, Plateau came first with 21.31 percent, followed by Oyo, which has 19.97 percent. Releasing the result, the Registrar/chief executive of NECO, Professor Charles Uwakwe said even though there was a down-slide in the malpractice cases with 5.9 percent reduction compared to 2016, the Council was worried by the anomaly and was working relentlessly to address the problem. He said out of the 42, 985 candidates that registered, 42, 429 actually sat for the examination with 556 abstaining. He said comparatively there was a significance progress in the general performance of candidate over that of last year, adding that 24, 098 candidates representing 56.79 percent have five credits and above including English Language and Mathematics. According to him 32, 917 candidates representing 77.58 percent have five credits and above irrespective of English Language and Mathematics, pointing out the performance represents a slight improvement of 1.72 percent over last year. The analysis shows that 32, 701 candidates representing 78.82 percent scored credit and above in mathematics, while 29, 258 representing 70.62 percent have credits and above in English Language. Professor Uwakwe commended the staff of the Council for ensuring early release of the results, noting that the gesture was the first the Council would be releasing results barely 38 days after the conduct of examination. https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/ogun-leads-as-neco-releases-nov-dec-ssce-results-2.html Lalasticlala Mynd44 Fynestboi |
Edo State Government on Wednesday afternoon commenced demolition of a multi -million naira hotel belonging to Tony Kabaka Adun. Bulldozers and security personnel were mobilised to the hotel at about 12 noon and began the demolition. It was part of the state government’s commitment to removal of illegal structures erected on government property, including public schools and waterways as well as roof eave-extensions and structures erected on the right of way of roads/streets, moats, river banks, TCN high tension lines, among others in Benin City and other major settlements in the state. Residents in the area trooped out to watched the demolition of the hotel. The Edo State Government had in October last year, through the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, issued a seven-day notice to Tony Adun to remove his T. Latifah Hotel and Suites, located at the Ugbor axis of the State capital. It said the hotel was built on a property belonging to Ugbor Primary School. Kabaka, who had vowed to die if the hotel was demolished, later opted to beg Governor Godwin Obaseki. He apologised to Governor Obaseki for the words he used in the previous video saying he was “angered.” Tony was engaged by Comrade Adams Oshiomhole administration to collect taxes from drivers. He and other private revenue contractors were sacked by Governor Godwin Obaseki, who insisted the state government has the ability to collect its revenue. Speaking on why the hotel must be demolished, Governor Godwin Obaseki said that no amount of blackmail would stop him from demolishing the building because it was built on government property. Governor Obaseki told reporters last year that there was no political undertone in the decision since he had warned in the past that his administration would not tolerate lawlessness. According to him: “Businesses cannot thrive when there is anarchy and complete disrespect for the law. For us as a government whatever we need to do to ensure that there is law and order will be done. “If you have done the wrong thing and taken over properties that is not yours, to build on government property is the wrong thing to do. If you go and build on road, that is not the right thing to do. If government tolerates that then more people will become lawless. “If any law has been breached in Edo State, I have sworn to the constitution to preserve order. This is a government that is not afraid of anybody and will not be subject to blackmail. Anybody who contravenes the law no matter how highly placed you are in Edo State, you will be dealt with. “It has no political undertone. If you go to Etete now. I am doing the same thing. I am fencing the sports centre. “I have warned in the past that anybody who encroached on government land or school properties will be dealt with. Go to Bénin Technical College, that is evidence. As long as they continue to behave lawlessly, we will enforce the law.” Reacting to the demolition, Kabaka who spoke on the phone, said it was saddened that the state government could not wait for judgment to be delivered in the case. Kabaka said the court had fixed Friday, February 7, 2020 for judgment in the suit. He said he had secured injunctions stopping demolition of the hotel. His words: “We are still in court. I have injunctions against the government. Judgment is on Friday. I have Certificate of Occupancy in my house but I don’t have C of O in the hotel. “Let him go ahead and demolish it. 100 years is not forever.” Special Adviser to Governor Obaseki on Media and Communication Strategy, Mr. Crusoe Osagie, said all injunctions have been vacated at the court. https://thenationonlineng.net/finally-obaseki-demolishes-kabakas-hotel/ Lalasticlala Mynd44 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9CEbiddSuv0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l1KIPlDp2Qw

Speaking at The Platform on October 1, Sanwo-Olu said he would ensure that nobody was left behind, adding that the current transport system was working for the masses. He said his administration would harmonise okada operations and develop a regulation system for better accountability. “To also solve the traffic issue of Lagos is also to talk about the okada issue; okada is everywhere, anywhere you see. Part of the things that we are going to be doing is not to leave anybody behind. People are currently using a system that is working for them,” he said. “You see some okada riders that are branded, that use smart ways to pay when you finish the journey. We are trying to harmonise all of them and be able to come up with a regulation system where we can account for every okada rider. “We will know who they are, we can manage them. In fact, the solutions that some of them are bringing, they can disenable those okadas remotely. That is where we are planning to get to but it is also something that we need to think through very well and be sure that nobody is disenfranchised. “As much as possible, give everyone opportunity to play and play well. I’m hoping that once we do all of this, the traffic will be reduced significantly.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f3qzMw_CcfU |

Lately, the Nigeria Christian Graduate Fellowship issued a press statement to fault the assailment of the leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina. The exchange had begun when CAN expressed its disappointment with the government’s handling of the Boko Haram threats, the security architecture of the country and, how the sloppy handling of the abduction of a CAN leader in Adamawa, Revd Lawan Andimi, culminated in his unfortunate beheading. In his rejoinder, Adesina, blasé and reprimanding, complained about CAN’s politics and even sent some barbed words to them as a bonus. His riposte generated a counterattack by the NCGF which expressed their disappointment in what he has become. Let me quickly state that I have reservations with the politics and activities of religious organisations like CAN, the NCGF, and so on, but that is not the crux of this piece. Instead, I want to point out that the NCGF got a few things misaligned in their response to Adesina. One, they implied that as a Christian, he ought to be defending the cause of fellow Christians. Well, the man was not hired into government as a church representative, so anyone expecting him to be on the side of Christians is merely wasting time. That is not his job. Two, the group, in their prevarication, made excuses for Adesina. According to their statement, Adesina has found himself in this moral and professional quandary where he has to “market a bad product.” This kind of posturing suggests that Adesina loses sleep over what he has to do for a living. While we can only speculate about what Adesina privately thinks about the mess he wipes while at his desk, I also find it hard to believe that he is “saying and doing what he does not believe is right.” The NCGF seems to be underestimating people’s capacity to take a reactionary stance and make it a hill worth dying on. Nothing about the way Adesina conducts himself publicly suggests he develops moral malaria for what he says no matter how reprehensible they might be. The man is a willingly complicit agent in the clouding of issues of public concern. I do not see any dilemma, ethical or otherwise, detaining Adesina. Three, they also suggested that Adesina had fallen from some professional pinnacle and is no longer “the same person known to speak truth to power.” They said he is paying “an unfortunate price for accepting to package and maintain a product that is not only bacterial, (but is) fungal as well as virulent, but irredeemably putrefied.” When you get over the verbosity of those sentences, you find that their hesitation at getting their point across undermines their position. Adesina did not evolve from a radical journalist to a bullhorn that now walks around the public square with his eyes wide shut while serving kakistocratic interests. He is what he has been all along, and those who keep suggesting that the demons of Aso Rock have finally possessed him are overestimating his politics. He did not change. People do not change, at least for the worse; they are only revealed with time. Adesina is no different. He simply took up a job that allowed his true character to unfurl. If he were not the obtuse kind of person he has shown himself to be, his Aso Rock paymasters would probably never have hired him for the job in the first place. If we maintain this perspective of his character, we can remain focused on issues that concern us. When we indulge in syrupy sentiments and lament about how power changes people like Adesina, we eventually get carried away from what truly matters. In this case, it was the gruesome murder of Andimi: what could have been done differently to save his life, and what should be done in case there is a recurrence of the abduction of another Christian leader? With the publicity that the terrorists got from the Andimi episode, they will likely target more known people to generate media buzz. That puts more Christian leaders and their congregants at risk. Those attacking Adesina allowed themselves to be sucked into a schoolyard pissing contest. By exchanging brickbats with him, they managed to turn potential life and death situation into an orgy of clickbait. Watching CAN, Adesina, and the NGGF throw potshots at one another might be entertaining, but it is also distracting. By now, we should be aware that Aso Rock’s numerous media aides have no other job than to obfuscate issues by fouling the air with their toxicity. To be sure, the era of Adesina is not the first time we would be gifted with presidential aides who roll up their sleeves and get into “roforofo” (rough fight) with the public. The erosion of the dignity of public office – at least based on the ability to communicate logically and coherently with people – did not start with the Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) regime (and his ultra-rabid aides) and will probably not end in 2023. Since 1999, if one does not go too far back in our political history, we have had presidential spokespersons who talk too loudly without saying anything. No one should make the mistake of assuming they are poor articulators or that their atavistic outbursts of anger are an expression of their frustration with the populace. No, the point of their faux ire is to divert the public from the emptiness of the government when they turn every issue into an occasion to exchange insults. The goal is not for them to communicate the heart of government to the people coherently and sensibly, but to turn criticisms – especially the legitimate ones – into rancour that will take attention from the issue at hand. During Goodluck Jonathan’s era they hired Dr. Reuben Abati for a similar job but had to shove him aside when they found that his well-manicured intellect hindered the satisfactory execution of his brief. Dr. Doyin Okupe, the self-described attack dog (or lion) who never hesitated to roll with piglets in the mud took over, and boy, did he do his job well! In Buhari’s regime, they have multiplied the attack dogs. Buhari has more of them in his kennels than he does thinkers and economists. I am sure when Buhari deigns to peep into their activities now and then, he is well-pleased with how they manage to generate befuddling outrage. Whether suggesting Benue people should give up their land for ranching at the expense of their lives, or saying Boko Haram now only beheads rather than bombs, or insensitively comparing the number of people that died under the Jonathan administration with that of Buhari regime, or promising in 2017 that Nigeria would stop importing fuel by 2019, or claiming that Buhari sold his houses to secure the forex that bequeathed his children expensive foreign education, or shrugging off the question of who was paying Buhari’s medical bills during his lengthy hospitalisations in London and claiming he does not know, or lamenting that Buhari’s 1985 autocratic regime should have lasted longer, or asking us to individually go challenge pipeline vandals who were denying us guaranteed supply of electricity, or even lying that Buhari too starves like other hapless Nigerians because he took a pay cut when they got into office, the long and short of it all is that the man was strategically placed in Aso Rock to muddle matters. The goal is to get us talking about his silliness while we overlook the pressing subject of concern. When Adesina said that Buhari never promised to receive treatment abroad, he managed to momentarily detract from the point of the criticism of the President: bleeding the nation of resources to receive the quality medical care inaccessible to most other Nigerians. At this stage, we should transcend the point where we get into fights with administrative errand boys and girls. It goes nowhere and resolves zilch. Those we have business with are both elected and appointed public officials whose duties matter to the development of the nation. https://punchng.com/femi-adesina-did-not-change

Tens of farmers – men and women, from over 12 villages in Oja Odan community and its environs in Yewa North Local Government Area of Ogun State protested the incessant attacks on them by herdsmen and destruction of their farm crops by grazing cattle. The grieving farmers who took their protest march, on Wednesday, to the Palace of the traditional ruler of the area, the Eselu of Iseluland, Oba Akintunde Akinyemi, alleged that one of them was killed last week by violent herdsmen, who also cruelly chopped off one of the hands of the murdered man’s son. They further alleged that they have also lost tens of millions of naira in farm crops to the over 8,000 heads of cattle that routinely graze on their farms, devour the crops and trampling down others as they move indiscriminately from one end to the other. The Jagun Oba of Iseluland, Chief Festus Olabode Aina who spoke on behalf of the protesting farmers at the Palace of Oba Akinyemi, said the herdsmen were intruders from Republic of Niger and Chad and having been chased out of Republic of Benin by the country’s soldiers during the movement, surged into their villages and practically took over the farms and forest there. Aina urged the monarch to convey their plights to the state and Federal governments to come to their rescue quickly and drive the herdsmen away, fearing that they could be bloodshed as witnessed in 2007, should the “peace loving villagers’ patience” thinned out and gives way in self-defence to direct confrontation with the offending herdsmen. According to him, their age-long stream that supply them water for drinking and domestic purposes have been muddied, polluted and soiled with cow droppings by the cattle which go there for water daily while their women, daughters and sisters also suffer dehumanisation, abuse and humiliation in the hands of herdsmen. Responding, Oba Akinyemi lauded the farmers for their peaceful conduct and advised them to continue to be calm and not take the laws in their hands, assuring that their message would be communicated to the governments. The monarch lamented that the herders returned to the community in their large numbers after the Benin republic soldiers vent their anger on them over the border closure and sent them packing from their country. Speaking with reporters, the Eselu appeals to the government to intervene and let the herdsmen leave the community immediately before things go out of hands. The monarch said:”Well, my people are here today to agitate against the abuse, killings, destruction of crops by the Fulani herdsmen in our community. It is surprising to me to see my people, representatives of different communities where we have over 26,000 voters protesting this morning. “Ever since I have been on the throne, this has always been a problem we have been trying to tame, but, because of the stubbornness of this herdsmen, it has become so difficult to tame them. “The problem has become more tedious because many of them are now from Benin Republic and Niger. My people are saying they can’t take it anymore. The soldiers in the republic of Benin have chased the herdsmen out and they have now seen our community as an alternative at the expense of the peace of our people in our land. “They are now destroying our crops raping our women, maiming our men among others. So, as a matter of fact, I have to employ an appeal to the government to please come to the aid of our people as a matter of urgency.” However, the Ogun State Police Command said it is aware of the community’s protest but assured that there would be security beef up in the to support those already on ground to ensure safety for the villagers and farmers. Speaking through the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, it added that the Police would continue to put measures in place to prevent a breakdown law and order in that part of the state. https://thenationonlineng.net/ogun-communities-protest-herdsmen-attacks/amp/?__twitter_impression=true

DECEMBER 10, 2012 In 2012 when ex-President Goodluck Jonathan was in power, Mohammed, who was the spokesman of the then Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), a major part of the bloc that later metamorphosed into the All Progressives Congress (APC), had described the Nigeria’s low ranking on TI index as a proof that Jonathan “is not serious” about fighting corruption. It was less than two years into that administration and Nigeria was ranked 35th most corrupt country in the world. In a strongly-worded statement at the time, Mohammed said the “harvest of corruption scandals’’ under the Jonathan administration was unprecedented in Nigeria’s history, and has been attested to by TI. He had said: “According to the latest CPI, Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation and one of the continent’s biggest economies was not listed among the top 35 least corrupt nations in Africa, even when it was ranked the 35th most corrupt nations in the world. “It is also instructive that Liberia and Sierra Leone, which Nigeria helped to liberate from the throes of war are now doing much better in fighting corruption than the country (Nigeria), just like much smaller and less-endowed nations like Niger, Gambia, Burkina Faso and Mali are better rated. “In all of these and more, the administration has shown an amazing lack of political will in investigating the scams and prosecuting perpetrators. “Worst still, key administrative officials have shown from their careless comments that they either do not understand what it means to fight corruption or they are just trivialising it. “President Jonathan must wake from his slumber and face the reality that corruption is fast eating deep into the soul of Nigeria, having already decimated the body. He must stop playing the ostrich and lead the way in the fight against corruption before it consumes the country.” https://www.thecable.ng/flashback-in-2012-lai-attacked-jonathan-over-tis-corruption-index JANUARY 27, 2020 Nigeria is ranked 146 out of 180 of the world's most corrupt nations. “In any event, we are not fighting corruption because we want to impress any organisation. “We are fighting corruption because we believed that without fighting the menace, the much sought development will not happen and we have results to show for fighting corruption. https://www.google.com/amp/s/dailytimes.ng/2020/01/28/we-are-not-distracted-by-your-baseless-rating-lai-mohammed-replies-ti/amp/ |
Following last Saturday’s supplementary election to determine the eventual winner of the Orlu/Orsu/Oru East federal constituency of Imo State, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), on Tuesday declared Jerry Alagboso of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the winner of the poll. In a tensed atmosphere following the invasion of the INEC collation centre by the Police earlier today, the Returning Officer, Dr. Emma Anakuba, from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, said Alagboso scored a total of 22,475 to defeat the All Progressives Congress (APC), Edwin Iheanacho, who polled 20,814 votes. He said, however, the results from two of the remaining four units were cancelled due to over-voting. The declaration took place in the presence of the Imo state Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Prof. Francis Chukwuemeka Ezeonu; the National Commissioner in charge of South South, Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu; and her counterpart from Northwest, Abubakar Natuche, among others after the reconciliation of all the figures. The Imo state Commissioner of Police, Bolaji Fafowora, who had earlier stormed the venue, Prof. Okey Ibeanu hall, to stop the announcement, was allegedly resisted by Ezeonu. Iheanacho, had filed a petition in the tribunal after Alagboso won in the 2019 election as a returnee to the lower chamber of the National Assembly. Daily Trust reports that an Appeal Court had also ordered the INEC to conduct a supplementary election in 18 wards in Orlu. Also, Daily Trust had earlier reported that there was confusion at the INEC headquarters in Owerri as Police detachment led by CP Fafowora invaded the centre, asking the REC to stop the announcement of the results of the supplementary election. The election was stalemated last Saturday by thugs who invaded the collation centre at Orlu after results from 14 out of 18 polling units had been announced. Following the directive from INEC headquarters, our reporter gathered that the collation of the remaining four units were ordered to be announced so that the eventual winner could emerge before the commissioner approached the REC asking him to suspend further announcement. But his instruction was rebuffed by the REC and other INEC officials in attendance. It took the intervention of Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu, who explained the guidelines to the Police commissioner before he allowed the process to continue. But order was restored and the results were eventually announced at about 5:30pm. https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/pdps-jerry-alagboso-wins-imo-supplementary-election.html

The National Examinations Council (NECO), has officially confirmed the certificate submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) by Senator Ifeanyi Ubah as original and authentic. This was coming against the widespread alleged certificate forgery allegation leveled against the senator The examination body released the result details and cleared the air in a letter NECO/R/LGS/20/003, dated 23rd January 2020 and addressed to Human Rights Writers Association (HURIWA), Ubah and YPP.HURIWA had written to NECO, to authenticate or deny the certificate issued to Ubah. In the letter, responding to the request, NECO confirmed that Ifeanyi Ubah took a total of 8 subjects, had credits in seven and failed one. NECO further explained that the conventional and obtainable practice among examination bodies is that failed subjects are not recorded in the certificate, although they remain in the examination body’s database. He said such will continue to appear in both the statement of results and confirmation of results usually sent to educational institutions. The letter reads: “In all, we state with every sense of duty and responsibility that both the statement of result and the certificate are genuine. They both emanated from the council and correspond with the records in our database.” Senator Ubah who address the media yesterday on the issue said he didn’t get any fair hearing from the court which gave a judgment in favour of Uzoh. He said he was never served or given any opportunity to defend himself. The senator said the judgment will not stand, as he has already appealed against it. He said he needed to clear his name and set the records straight. “It is also a well known fact that I submitted my certificate to INEC and not my statement of result. It is very obvious that those trying to malign Senator Ifeanyi Ubah are mischievous and ignorant elements who do not understand the difference between a “certificate of result” and “statement of result” because over 20 million Nigerians are aware of the fact that this practice is not only obtainable in NECO, but WAEC also. “This is because certificates are honorariums which shouldn’t carry failed subjects, as opposed to statement of results which only serve record purposes in the institution(s) database,” Senator Ubah said. https://m.guardian.ng/news/neco-validates-ifeanyi-ubahs-o-level-result/ |
The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has called on Governors of Southwest States to allow the Operation Amotekun embrace all citizens living in the sub-region. MURIC also advised that the new security organization should not lean towards any religion or target any ethnic group for victimization. The call was made in a statement on Monday issued to DAILY POST by the Director of the human rights organization, Prof. Ishaq Akintola. This was sequel to the resolution of the governors of the South West to give a legal backing to the Amotekun security outfit. The statement added, “No homo sapien compos mentis living in Yorubaland will oppose the setting up of a security outfit to complement the existing security agencies on ground (the army, police, NNDC, DSS, etc). “We all want lives and properties secured all over Nigeria. That is why people living on every street have security arrangements in place while some individuals also have both day and night guards in their private offices and homes. “It is therefore mischievous to give the impression that Muslims are against the South West security initiative. No reasonable Nigerian today will frown at attempts to boost security in any part of the country. What we oppose is the religious and ethnic tinge which the handlers gave Amotekun. “You cannot blame Muslims for crying out when you ask them to bring birth certificates from churches before joining Amotekun. Neither can you expect them to stand akimbo when you tell them to bring letters of recommendation from churches. “Muslims in the Yoruba enclave are not opposing Amotekun per se. What they oppose is a situation where a ostensibly anti-Islam security outfit comes into operation in Yorubaland. “Apart from the reference to birth certificates from churches and letters of reference from pastors, the choice of nomenclature is another controversial issue because it has a strong Christian identity. “Why ‘Amotekun’ as a name for crying out loud? Research has revealed the biblical origin of this name and it makes Muslims suspicious. Why Amotekun of all brands? “Jeremiah 5:6 says, ‘A leopard shall guard over their city’. Amotekun is mentioned in this verse with particular reference to guarding a city. “Now, we have a sub-region where Muslims have been under persecution for ages coming up with a security outfit under the name of the same leopard mentioned in the bible as a guard over the city. “This is not a coincidence. The handlers of Amotekun picked the name deliberately from the bible in order to score a spiritual point. It is very critical. It calls for serious concern. So why give a security unit a religious name? “We advise the planners of the new security outfit to give it another name in the interest of peace and harmony in the sub-region. This is necessary if they want to carry all stakeholders along. Amotekun as a name is already controversial. We do not need a Christian security unit. “Neither do we need a Muslim security outfit. The security agency in the South West must not only be neutral, it must also be seen to be neutral. “We affirm that Muslims form the majority in the population of the South West. They are therefore critical stakeholders and the unity of the Yoruba cannot become fait accompli without involving the Muslims in the sub-region. Muslims must be carried along in any security network in the zone. We are interested in security. “We are security conscious. We will therefore join a South West security initiative if it is not tainted with Christian landmarks. We will have confidence in a security outfit that involves Muslim leaders, not one that parades pastors, bishops and archbishops alone. “It must also be noted that a security group that starts with subtle threats to our brethren in faith in another part of the country cannot be safe for Muslims in Yorubaland. There is no racism or tribalism in Islam (Qur’an 49:13). It is a global brotherhood. Yoruba Muslims love Yorubaland. “They also love Nigeria. But they owe their Creator, Allah, an unflinching and undiluted love towards their brothers and sisters in Islam no matter their race, tribe or colour. From Allah we came and unto Allah we shall return. “On that Day, nobody will be judged on the basis of his tribe but on the basis of his deeds on earth. Nonetheless, we believe in a united Nigeria and we will support a security unit that constitutes no threat to any tribe in the country, be it Igbo, Fulani, Ijaw, or Tiv. “However, the latest assurance coming from certain quarters that birth certificates from churches and letters of reference from pastors was not part of the original pre-requisites is most welcome. “MURIC will support any security arrangement anywhere in Nigeria so long as such arrangement is devoid of gymnastic religiousity and acrobatic ethnicity. “In addition, the organisers of Amotekun must desist from attempts to intimidate perceived opponents of the scheme. Leaders of the group must caution their foot-soldiers against excesses. “They must distance themselves from arm-twisting gimmicks like deliberately misinterpreting statements made by people who oppose the Amotekun idea. “For instance, MURIC has very strong evidence that some elements in the Amotekun camp have issued death threats to its leader. That is unacceptable. It is an attempt to silence opposition. “All opinions must be allowed in a democracy. That is freedom of speech. Those who attempt to muzzle opinions give the impression that they have hidden agenda. It presupposes that the Amotekun security project will be biased and unprofessional when it finally comes on board. We refuse to be intimidated. It changes nothing in our stand and style of advocacy. “In a nutshell, as the organisers deliberate on the legal framework to back the complementary security project in the South West, we advise that such legal framework includes a clause that lays emphasis on religious neutrality, security for all citizens residing in Yorubaland regardless of their ethnic background and a new name which is acceptable to all faiths.” https://dailypost.ng/2020/01/27/amotekun-islamic-group-sends-message-to-southwest-governors/
