President Muhammadu Buhari has revealed why he decided to become to join partisan politics after release from prison. Speaking when he received the youths leaders of the All Progressives Congress, APC, who came from across the country to pay him a visit in Abuja, Buhari said he took interest in politics after a clean bill on his integrity by those who detained him after the 1985 military coup and who thoroughly checked his record as governor of the North East, Minister of Petroleum and Head of State and found nothing incriminating. “After I was released and nothing was found on me I took interest in politics. This is what pushed me into partisan politics; to serve with integrity. So I decided to try leadership as a civilian, after taking off the military uniform,’’ he added. Speaking on his second tenure, the President assured that he would be more firm, focused and relentless in delivering results, especially in securing the country, stimulating the economy to work for all, and fighting corruption. “I am currently serving my last term in office. I swore by the constitution to defend the country, and I will do the needful for the country,’’ President Buhari said. In his remarks, National Youth Leader of the APC, Comrade Sadiq Shuaibu Abubakar, congratulated the President for winning the Presidential elections in 2019, assuring him that the youths will continue to support his policies and vision of greatness for the country. Abubakar urged the President to get more youths involved in governance so as to learn from his “treasured wisdom.’’ https://dailypost.ng/2020/01/10/i-joined-politics-because-im-not-corrupt-buhari/

.....Boris Johnson's Brexit legislation has been backed by Members of Parliament by 330 votes to 231. ....It marks a historic moment in the Brexit process ahead of the UK's scheduled departure from the EU on March 31. ....Theresa May failed repeatedly to pass her Withdrawal Agreement with the EU through the House of Commons. Boris Johnson's Brexit bill has passed through its final stage in the House of Commons, clearing the path for Britain to leave the EU at the end of January. With a 80-strong majority, Johnson's government raced the Withdrawal Agreement Bill through all three of its stages in the Commons in just three days. The legislation will now head to the House of Lords next week where it will be scrutinised by peers. The bill's speedy passage through parliament represents a stark contrast to its fortunes in the last parliament, where it was rejected three times under Theresa May's premiership. It is ultimately expected to pass through all stages and receive Royal Assent before entering the statute books by 31 January, when the UK is scheduled to leave the EU. The legislation could face a somewhat more difficult passage through the Lords, where the government has no majority. In particular, the prime minister could face opposition from Labour and Liberal Democrat peers who want the government to reinstate a guarantee designed to guarantee that child refugees should be allowed to reunite with their families in the UK. The prime minister's decision to scrap the amendment, introduced by Labour peer Lord Alfred Dubs, was heavily criticised by opposition MPs. Alf Dubs, the Labour peer who successfully campaigned for the amendment to be added to the EU Withdrawal Bill in 2016, said it was a "very depressing" outcome. "It is very disappointing that the first real act of the new Boris Johnson government is to kick these children in the teeth. It is a betrayal of Britain's humanitarian tradition and will leave children who are very vulnerable existing in danger in northern France and in the Greek islands," he said. Downing Street insisted after the vote that it was committed to protecting the rights of child refugees. https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.businessinsider.com/boris-johnson-brexit-bill-passes-commons-vote-mps-eu-exit-2020-1 |
Rules regarding the placement and maintenance of the portraits are complex and change frequently. At homes, they should be placed on the most prominent wall in the living room with nothing else on it and high up, so that nobody can stand higher than them. Of importance, and subject to random checks, is that they are kept clean, a responsibility that usually falls on the lady of the house. They wipe the glass every morning. Sometimes the portraits have a box under them that houses a white cloth used for dusting them that one is not allowed to use for any other purpose. When a North Korean changes apartment, he or she must start by hanging the portraits first. When a North Korean family mourns a dead member, ceremonial greetings and offerings are made to the deceased, but only after the two portraits have been given the same treatment. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kim_Il-sung_and_Kim_Jong-il_portraits

A mother who saved her children from a house fire in Onsong County, North Hamgyong Province, is currently under investigation by the Ministry of State Security (MSS) for failing to save Kim family portraits from the fire. Sources in the area told Daily NK on Dec. 30 that the fire broke out in a house where two families lived. The children were at home and their parents were out when the fire started. The mothers of the children ran back to the house to try and save their children when they heard about the fire. In the midst of all the chaos in trying to save her children from the flames, one of the mothers was unable to save the portraits of Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il. Daily NK sources said that she is currently under investigation by the MSS for failing to save the portraits. “HEROISM” REWARDED North Koreans who save the portraits of the Kim family from fires are treated as heroes, while those who fail to do so many times face legal consequences. After the mothers had managed to save their children, one young farm worker managed to save the Kim portraits belonging to one of the families living in the house. The young farmer had just recently been released from prison for a violent offense, but he has now become a hero overnight simply because he managed to save the portraits from the flames, Daily NK sources said. The family whose portraits were saved have not faced an MSS investigation, the sources added. MOTHER STILL SEPARATED FROM HER CHILDREN Daily NK sources said that the mother under investigation by the MSS has been unable to care for her children at the hospital. Both of her children need antibiotics to treat their burns but she has been unable to obtain them because of the investigation. Although neighbors of the family want to help the mother by covering the cost of her children’s medicine, they are wary to do so because they don’t know if she will be charged with a political offense. “The mother will be able to focus on caring for her children once the authorities end their investigation,” one of the sources told Daily NK. In the meantime, neighbors are trying to gather at least five kilograms of corn to help the family, but even this has been difficult to do, he added. https://www.dailynk.com/english/mother-faces-punishment-failing-save-kim-family-portraits/ Mynd44 Lalasticlala Osystein

Rampaging gunmen suspected to be bandits struck again in Katsina on Wednesday morning and reportedly abducted four men of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) at Jibia, a border town with the Republic of Niger. Eyewitness reports said that the Customs men were taken hostage at the Dan-Bedi Customs checkpoint, along with an unspecified number of unsuspecting travellers on the Jibia – Batsari highway at about 10 am. “The bandits, riding on motorcycles, arrived the Customs checkpoint this morning (Wednesday) and overpowered the officers, seized their weapons and fired gunshots sporadically into the air,” an eyewitness told reporters, adding that, “the gunmen also seized several motorists and passengers and disappeared with them into nearby the Rugu forest.” When contacted on telephone, the Katsina Customs Public Relations Officer, Peter Duniya, declined to comment on the matter arguing that, “I am on leave.” But a senior Customs officer who spoke on condition of anonymity said: “Yes, we are aware of the incident but it is still fresh as it just happened this morning (Wednesday) and investigation is still ongoing. We have not even compiled the report and of course, I am not the right person to speak officially on the issue.” This is the second time within the week that gunmen would abduct persons along the highway in the same area of Jibia. The police confirmed that suspected bandits last Sunday temporarily blocked a section of the Jibia – Batsari road and kidnapped no fewer than 19 motorists and passengers. Meanwhile, in a separate incident, unidentified gunmen equally invaded the Magama-Jibia community, also in Jibia Local Government Area, on Tuesday evening and killed two teenagers as they launched an attack on the villagers. According to some of the survivors of the attack which occurred at about 10 pm, several other residents especially the youth who were injured during the attack are currently receiving treatment at a hospital in Jibia. According to a resident, “when the gunmen came to the area on Tuesday morning, they left their motorcycles outside the community and trekked into Magama-Jibia, with their weapons strapped to their shoulders. “They moved around and later left to where they had parked their motorcycles. It was later in the night, at about 10.15 pm that they stormed the community from every side, shooting into the air. “They succeeded in raiding some houses but some of the residents decided to confront them and they came out with sticks, matchets, and other weapons to resist the gunmen. “It was in the process of resisting the invaders that two young boys were killed by the gunmen while several others were injured.” For Katsina, acts of armed banditry and kidnapping have virtually become a daily routine with reports of killings and abduction of residents and motorists in parts of the state. From the southern parts of Katsina State including Malumfashi and Kafur, to the central area including the university town of Dutsinma and to Jibia in the north-eastern flank, the hoodlums have remained consistent and more daring in their attacks on communities. The development comes on the heels of certain peace deal and dialogue initiative which government said it had with sections of armed bandits and kidnappers in the state, designed to tackle the menace. https://www.sunnewsonline.com/breaking-news-gunmen-abduct-4-customs-officers-kill-2-teenage-boys-in-katsina/ |

Unknown persons have allegedly broken into the office of the Secretary to the Government of Katsina State (SGS), Mustapha Inuwa, and made away with huge amounts of money. The office which is located at the state secretariat was said to have been broken into on Sunday night. Sources familiar with what happened said the amount stolen was in the millions of Naira. One of the sources said the amount stolen was up to N16 million. He also said some people arrested on Monday in connection with the incident. Those arrested included a security guard, and two government officials working at the SSG’s office. The incident comes same time the office of the Secretary to the State Government is handling disbursement of allowance arrears to hundreds of S-Power beneficiaries teaching at various state-owned secondary and primary schools. S-Power is the Katsina State government programme patterned after the federal government’s N-Power scheme, with hundreds of graduates and NCE holders recruited to teach in public schools. It was gathered that huge amounts of money had been kept at the office of the SSG, ostensibly for payment of allowance to the S-Power beneficiaries. The spokesman for the police command in the state, SP Gambo Isah, and that of the SGS, Abdullahi YarAdua, were yet to respond to inquiries made on the matter as at the time of this report. https://m.guardian.ng/news/about-n16-million-stolen-from-office-of-katsina-ssg/ Lalasticlala mynd44 |

The substance of the Iran nuclear deal is slowly disappearing and European powers will decide in the coming days whether to launch a dispute resolution process over Tehran's latest violations, according to the French foreign minister. Iran said on Sunday that it would scrap limits on enriching uranium, taking a further step back from the 2015 agreement with six major powers. Its decision followed the assassination of Iranian military commander Qassem Soleimani in a US drone attack, a move which heightened already heated tensions between Washington and Tehran after US President Donald Trump pulled out the nuclear deal last year and imposed punishing sanctions on the Islamic Republic. "The latest decisions mean that the Iranians can now enrich uranium without any constraints, with the quantities they want, in the areas they want, and with the number of centrifuges they want," French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian told BFM TV on Monday. "The repeated violations leave us today asking about the long-term validity of this [nuclear] accord. We are considering launching the dispute mechanism resolution ... we will make a decision in the coming days." Launching a dispute resolution process could eventually lead to renewed UN sanctions on Tehran. Le Drian, whose country has led efforts to defuse tensions between Iran and the United States, said both powers needed to return to the negotiating table, but warned Iran against carrying out responses that could escalate the situation. "We aren't at war, but if we don't mobilise to reduce tensions then the risk of war is there," he said. "There is always room for diplomacy." Asked whether the US strike that killed Soleimani was a political act by US President Donald Trump - who ordered the attack - to distract from domestic problems, Le Drian said the Iranian commander was not a "choir boy", he was on the US and European Union terrorism lists and had been mandated by Iran's supreme leader to carry out destabilising acts in the Middle East. The European Union's 28 foreign ministers are expected to hold an emergency meeting on Friday. "We must be ready to react to Iran's breaches of the nuclear deal," a European diplomat told Reuters News Agency. Asked whether this could mean triggering a mechanism that could result in international sanctions being reimposed on Tehran, the envoy said: "It is increasingly likely, but not yet decided. Friday will be key." Two other diplomats said France, the UK and Germany could make the decision before Friday. Asked whether the mechanism would be triggered, one of the diplomats said: "Not later than Friday, but, yes." https://www.aljazeera.com/amp/news/2020/01/prospect-fresh-sanctions-iran-rises-eu-leaders-mull-deal-200106201308407.html |
Riot has broken out in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State following the shooting of a commercial driver and two of his passengers by a policeman. The policeman guarding a new generation bank at the Ekeki axis of the capital city was said to have opened fire on a commercial bus belonging to Peace Mass, a popular transport company in Yenagoa. The yet-to-be-identified police operative reportedly boarded a commercial tricycle and escaped the scene shortly after wrecking havoc in the area. It was learnt the bullet, which was shot at close range, pierced through the driver’s head and hit two other passengers, including a suspected member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). The misfortune incident occurred opposite a Peace Mass terminus while the driver was trying to let his passengers disembark his bus before making a detour to enter the terminus. Trouble started when the policeman got enraged because the driver stopped the ill-fated bus in front of the bank. An eyewitness described the shooting as totally unnecessary saying the driver was still behind the wheels of his vehicle when the policeman released the shot. “We were just in front of here when the policeman started the argument that led to the shooting”, the source, who spoke in confidence said. He added: “The argument was unnecessary because the driver was just trying to allow his passengers disembark the bus. I heard the driver telling the policeman that he would soon leave the place. But before we knew what was happening, the policeman cocked his gun and shot at him. “He was lifeless. The bullet hit two other passengers, who were lying unconscious. It was an ugly sight. But the policeman immediately boarded a commercial tricycle and ran away. “There are about three policemen guarding the bank, but this particular one has been troublesome. He is always aggressive and is always harassing and extorting commercial tricycles here. “It is very disheartening. The bus came from Onitsha in Anambra State without problems only for this ugly incident to happen at its destination”. The source, however, said that angry youths started a riot to protest the killing and in the process destroyed part of the bank. It was learnt that the police deployed a patrol van to stop the escalation of the riot. When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Asinim Butswat, said the policeman had been arrested and taken to the Criminal Investigation Department of the police. He, however, said the full report of the incident and the circumstances surrounding it would be made public soon. https://thenationonlineng.net/breaking-riot-in-bayelsa-as-policeman-kills-three/ Myt Lalasticlala Oam4j |
The International Criminal Court has said it has extended its preliminary examinations on possible war crimes and crimes against humanity in Nigeria to cover the clashes between Nigerian soldiers and members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, a body of Shi’ite Muslims in the country. The ICC is also extending the examinations to the clashes between the Nigerian soldiers and a separatist group, the Indigenous People of Biafra. The ICCI disclosed this in its 2019 edition of the annual Report of Preliminary Examination Activities issued by the office of its Prosecutor headed by Mrs Fatou Bensouda. The report dated December 5, 2019 indicated that preliminary examination of the situation in Nigeria was announced on November 18, 2010. It noted that the Office of the ICC Prosecutor on November 12, 2015 “identified eight potential cases involving the commission of crimes against humanity and war crimes under articles 7 and 8” of the Rome Statutes. The report, which stated that Nigeria was among the countries under Phase 3 examinations by the Office of the Prosecutor, added that its latest updated “subject-matter assessment” had increased the number of potential cases involving Nigeria from eight to 10. Of the 10 cases now under the ICC preliminary examination, seven of them were said to be for Boko Haram and three for the Nigerian security forces. The issues of the security forces’ clashes with Shi’ites’ and IPOB members as well as communal clashes in Benue, Plateau and other North-Central states and in some parts of the North-East were said to have been thrown up in the latest updated assessment by the ICC Prosecutor. Both the IMN and the IPOB have been proscribed and designated as terrorist organisations by the Federal Government on the account of the groups’ alleged violent activities. A judicial inquiry set up by the Kaduna State Government to investigate the December 2015 clash between the IMN members and soldiers in the convoy of the Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, concluded that the military killed 347 IMN members in Zaria, Kaduna State, the base of their leader, Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky. A few IPOB members were also said to have been killed during the September 2017 Operation Python Dance II carried out by the Army to quell the agitation for secession by the South-East group. A soldier was said to have been killed during the IMN members’ clash with the Army in 2015 and IPOB members were also alleged to have killed some members of the security forces on different occasions. The ICC report stated in its 2019 report that it had received 15 communications concerning the clashes and communal violence in the North-Central and North-East. While it said it had been reviewing the allegations, it expressed concern about allegations of “ongoing evidence tampering and of alleged destruction of evidence” in respect of the IMN members clash with the Army. The report stated, “During the reporting period, the office worked on finalising its assessment on subject-matter jurisdiction with respect to the events which took place in December 2015 in Zaria, Kaduna State, when members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria reportedly clashed with the NSF (Nigerian security forces. “Other allegations that the office has been reviewing include allegations with respect to the conduct of the NSF against members of the Indigenous People of Biafra and communal violence in Nigeria’s North-Central and North-East.” https://punchng.com/icc-extends-war-crime-probes-to-army-shiites-ipob-clashes-report/amp/ |

WEDNESDAY, 25 December, 2019 was a day of joy and celebration for all people irrespective of religious affiliation. But the day went sour for the family of Sonola in Ijeun Titun area of Abeokuta South local government area of Ogun state, as the 37-year old Mutiu Sonola reportedly beat his wife Zainab to death after a short argument over food. Late Zainab, 34 years old, was a mother of one before her untimely death, she was a trader in Kuto market; she deals with foodstuffs and other things. According to an eyewitness, Bankole Soluade, a resident of the area where the couple resided, narrated how Sonola Mutiu usually beat Zainab repeatedly and how they normally intervened to stop him from the act. Soluade said: “On that fateful day, the story changed as Sonola Mutiu popularly known as Alfa Mutiu was reportedly beat Zainab to coma. When he discovered that the woman was almost dead, he rushed her to Ogun State Hospital at Sokenu road, Ijaiye, Abeokuta for treatment but Zainab could not survive the beating as she gave up the ghost in the hospital”. He added that “the hospital management then instructed Mutiu to carry the remains of his wife when she was finally confirmed dead.” Mutiu then took the corpse of his late wife to his family house at Oke-Yeke in Abeokuta, where the policemen attached to Ibara police station was called upon to arrest him with the corpse. “Mutiu was habitually beating his wife at any slightest provocation and that the latest assault leading to the woman’s death was triggered by a “minor disagreement which was on food.” On her part, an old woman who identified herself as Mrs. Aileru, said Mutiu has two wives. She said Zainab was the second wife. She said, both Mutiu and Zainab used to have quarrels to the extent that whenever there was quarrel between them, Mutiu will beat Zainab blue black. “Family members and neighbors had settled issues for both of them on several occasions. Even there was a time Zainab packed her belongings and moved out of Mutiu’s house, we settled the quarrel then and came back”. “I was surprised when Mutiu called her around 11am that his wife has been rushed to the hospital after minor disagreement between the two of them and he later called back around 11:30am to tell her that his wife is dead. “Mutiu started beating his wife in the morning on Christmas Day over a minor disagreement, despite series of warning by neighbours that he should desist from further assaulting his wife, a furious Mutiu kept hitting her with blows until Zainab slumped and slipped into coma.” The spokesperson for the Ogun State command, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, said preliminary investigation revealed that Mutiu was fond of beating the deceased at the slightest provocation and that the incident, that resulted in her death, was a minor disagreement. Oyeyemi said: “The corpse of the deceased has been deposited in the General Hospital, Ijaiye mortuary for autopsy.” https://www.vanguardngr.com/2020/01/man-beats-wife-to-death-over-food/ |
The Accountant General of the Federation, Alhaji Ahmed Idris, has been queried by the Auditor-General for the Federation, Mr. Anthony Ayine, over his failure to disclose details of N57.62bn Federal Government grants and contributions given in 2017. The amount was given by the Federal Government as grants and contribution to domestic and foreign governments, public and private owned companies, academic institutions and internationals agencies. Ayine in his audit report on the account of Ministries, Departments and Agencies of government explained that the breakdown and details of the grants and contributions were not presented to his office for audit. This, he noted, contravened the provisions of International Public Sector Accounting Standards 24 which deals with presentation of budget information in financial statements. A copy of the report, which had already been submitted to the Public Accounts Committee of the National Assembly was made available to our correspondent in Abuja. A number of major weaknesses and lapses in the management of public funds and resources were identified across several Ministries, Departments and Agencies during the annual audit. The findings range from irregular expenditures to failure to surrender surplus revenues to the Treasury, all running into billions of naira. Also notable was the continuing failures in the implementation of International Public Sector Accounting Standards. Overall, the findings were indicative of significant weaknesses in expenditure control, accounting, financial reporting and in the completeness and accuracy of the consolidated financial statements. Specifically, Ayine said non-disclosure of details of Federal Government grants and contributions would cast doubt on the authenticity and actual usage of such grants and contributions. He specifically noted that incomplete disclosure of budgeted figures might result in extra-budgetary expenditures. Ayine in the report stated that while the Accountant General was requested to disclose beneficiaries of grants and contributions for the 2017 year fiscal period, he responded that the list would be made available to the Auditor-General on March 18, 2019. However, the Auditor General said that as of the time the audit report was prepared, there was no receipt of the list of beneficiaries from the Accountant-General. The report read in part, “The budgetary provision for grants and contribution was not disclosed in the notes to the accounts. “The sum of N57,624,929,461.05 was granted by the Federal Government of Nigeria as grants and contribution which represent transfers to domestic and foreign governments, public and private owned companies, academic institutions and internationals for 2017. “Non-disclosure of details of Federal Government Grants and Contributions will cast doubt on the authenticity and actual usage of such grants and contributions.” The Registrar, Institute of Finance and Control of Nigeria, Mr Godwin Eohoi, said the findings of the audit report should be investigated by the Public Account Committee of the National Assembly and necessary action taken against those that committed the infractions. He said the collaboration of the Public Accounts Committee, the anti-corruption agencies, and non- governmental organisations was vital in holding government accountable in the management of the country’s resources. He said, “We need sound financial control system in the public sector to be able to check many infractions. “A financial system that lacks strong internal control mechanism would be prone to abuses and that is what we are seeing in the public sector.” https://punchng.com/accountant-general-queried-over-non-disclosure-of-n57bn-fg-grants/ Mynd44 Lalasticlala |

Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) members have received their December salary despite not enrolling in the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS) as directed by the Federal Government. ASUU National President Prof Biodun Ogunyemi confirmed the payment in his Christmas message to members of the union. The Federal Government, through the Office of the Accountant-General (OAGF) had threatened not to pay the December salary of any lecturer who failed to enrol in the IPPIS. However, the ASUU boss said his investigation showed that his colleagues were paid the salary even though they have not enrolled in the IPPIS. The ASUU President asked members to prepare for challenges ahead in 2020. He lamented that Nigerians find it difficult to make ends meet due to the harsh economy, stating that the situation has made life unbearable for the masses while the few rich continue to enrich themselves at the expense of the majority. According to Ogunyemi, the economy has hit the poor below the belt and made the yuletide period meaningless. He noted that celebration is more meaningful when the ordinary Nigerians have access to qualitative education, healthcare and other good things of life. Ogunyemi said: “Comrades and compatriots, as we join the rest of the world for the Christmas and New Year holidays, let’s look back with thanksgiving and prepare for the challenges of the future. The season of love reminds us of our obligations to the poor and downtrodden. “A celebration like this, is more meaningful when the ordinary Nigerians have access to qualitative education, healthcare, and other good things of life. Happy holidays, as the struggle continues!” https://thenationonlineng.net/govt-pays-varsity-teachers-despite-shunning-payroll/ Mynd44 Lalasticlala Fynestboi |
