About the matter, just stay firm on what you have decided. He is insisting because he believes you will fall eventually. Don't give him that satisfaction. First, cut him off on all the social networks where you are friends with him. Second, when next you meet him physically, give him no room to discuss the matter. Talk on open stuffs like his wellbeing, his friends, interesting political happenings, etc. Don't give him the satisfaction he wants. He would get frustrated and leave you alone.

My opinion, block his contact on whatsapp and ignore all his calls. I would have asked you not to date while in school but who am I? He can't obviously offer you anything since he didn't offer any to his ex your friend. On the other hand, you don't need your friends approval to be happy.
