I don't get what point you are trying to make.
But if you are saying that self consumption of the tithe is the bible injunction, then you can justify that completely and wholey by that verse.
I've read the verse before but couldnt remember it until i looked it up.
However looking up other verses of the bible on tithe you quickly see a disparating and disjunction.
In Malachi it says, that they may be meat KJV i.e provision in God's house.
A little thinking shows that the tithe can't be be the payer's self consumption alone - justifying that with only one verse of scripture to the neglect of other verses will lead to a lopsided theology.

That's why the bible enjoins rightly dividing the word of truth. Precept upon precept , word upon word.
And n the mouth of 2 or 3 witness- a word should be established!!

Deutoronomy 14: v 22-29:

22 Be sure to set aside a tenth of all that your fields produce each year. 23 Eat the tithe of your grain, new wine and olive oil, and the firstborn of your herds and flocks in the presence of the Lord your God at the place he will choose as a dwelling for his Name, so that you may learn to revere the Lord your God always. 24 But if that place is too distant and you have been blessed by the Lord your God and cannot carry your tithe (because the place where the Lord will choose to put his Name is so far away), 25 then exchange your tithe for silver, and take the silver with you and go to the place the Lord your God will choose. 26 Use the silver to buy whatever you like: cattle, sheep, wine or other fermented drink, or anything you wish. Then you and your household shall eat there in the presence of the Lord your God and rejoice. 27 And do not neglect the Levites living in your towns, for they have no allotment or inheritance of their own.

28 At the end of every three years, bring all the tithes of that year’s produce and store it in your towns,

29 so that the Levites (who have no allotment or inheritance of their own) and the foreigners, the fatherless and the widows who live in your towns may come and eat and be satisfied, and so that the Lord your God may bless you in all the work of your hands.

You missed the point of this thread by a wide margin. You should have stopped right where you admitted that you didnt get the point of the thread.

However, this is not to justify or negate paying of tithe.

Granted, that was the debate I had with my boss but this thread is a about a pastor who teaches the word, who teaches about tithe but have NEVER read this passage about tithes. Does it add up?

Why not? When they study only what the GOs programme them for the year and this part is not included.

All of you have been deceived by daddy freeze . You are the one who didn't study your bible well .The Tithe the people used for feast is different from the tithe given to God which is strictly for ministers of God

The tithe to God.

Leviticus 27:30.
And all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land, or of the fruit of the tree, is the Lord's: it is holy unto the Lord.

[color=#770077]Numbers 18:21-25
21 And, behold, I have given the Levites all the tithes in Israel for an inheritance in return for their service which they serve, the [menial] service of the Tent of Meeting

We are not tithing because the law say so but because it was already a spiritual principle before the law came .
Thanks a lot Bro.

This thread is not really about whether to pay or not to pay tithe but a fact that a pastor has never seen this particular bible passage before.
Christianity EtcMy Pastor Boss Does Not Know About Deuteronomy 14:22- by rejosom(op): 6:25pm On Dec 23, 2017
Sometime ago I created a thread on my discussion with my boss on my catholic belief. Feel free to read up.

https://www.nairaland.com/3142393/what-boss-told-me-religious#46207694

Well, few days ago I was discussing with him about our plans and budget for next year. The discussion continued smoothly until he told me how he is owing a backlog of tithes in his church (he is one of the pastors in his church.... Somehow almost all the Yoruba's in Port Harcourt are pastors). First, I asked him if tithe is supposed to be a burden to anyone won't God understand? He answered me straight away with Malachi 3:10 about how it is a curse to skip tithe, how it is a law and so on. If you have skipped some months then the curse is already there why not move on.

To cut the long story short, he continued preaching about curses and tithes until I pointed him to Deuteronomy 14:22. He then told me he will go and study it and get back to me. Well, he didn't come back till we vacated.

Now if my pastor boss knows Malachi 3:10 but not Deuteronomy 14:22, how on earth will his congregation ever open that part of the bible?

Maybe because, when I pay tithe to someone, I may not know whether the person is using it to advance God's kingdom or diminish it. But I could use the resource (tithe) myself and advance the kingdom of God without any middle man.

I don't believe in arguing where belief is concerned.

Do as you please.

Eat your tithes or give it to people. Anything that makes you sleep at night, do it.

Or maybe tithes don't even exist since they are of the law.

And for the guy talking about burning tithes, I mentioned sacrifices.

If you don't want to pay your tithes, don't sound like those who do are stupid. They believe it and it works for them.

All this bragging about how you give, like the rest of us don't, is just your morality speaking.
There is no argument here.... Just that it is the human nature to resist change.

Like I said, it's your money you can do whatever you like with it. It may work for you but it is not Christianity that's what I am saying.

Another might say sacrifing Ram in the name if Jesus works for him. It may really work for such a man, but it is not Christianity. Simple.

Nobody is calling you a fool for tithing...we are simply saying you are practising Judaism.

Tellemall:
Are you a Christian because you're scared of hell, or because you have come to believe that it's the only way to live for you?

You give tithes and offerings in faith to God, not because you're scared of punishments (as some people claim).

@no. 7, yes. Your tithes aren't only your food. The same Bible(Exodus) you read tells you that if your food is too much to take to the place where you will offer your sacrifices, sell them and bring the money before God. Not before man. But before God. The giving of food was because, at the time, edible sacrifices were required. It had to be food because it would be burnt before God. That is still a Jewish thing up till date.

The belief that tithes are only food is erroneous and appears to be new because for the first time someone has pointed out that scripture in public. Sometimes we need to read the Bible with understanding, not to see what we want to see.

When Jesus came to Earth, he stopped the Jews from stoning to death the Samaritan woman. There was no need for the law anymore because of his Mercy. When the poor woman dropped her offerings in the synagogue (place where God is worshipped), Jesus was there, too, watching her. She dropped money. Not food, but money. He did not condemn her, but praised her. This means that money can be dropped in church and Jesus is still watching. Why are we fighting to carry only food as tithes and offerings then? Is the Exodus law more superior to the new Grace of God? Did Jesus tell her to take back her money, that he only needed food?

So we need to think about it when someone is telling us to go back of giving food like Cain and Abel, when Jesus has allowed us to give money like that woman did. Is the man saying these things wiser than Jesus who let The woman drop money in the synagogue? Is he the new author of the Bible?

Tithing is not only for the poor. Goodwill, as expressed in Acts and Romans, cover for provisions for the poor, too. If everything is going to the poor, what goes towards the church of God on earth? It's not all about money, profits, fraud and deception.

We all need to read our Bibles in full.

@no 6, explain, please.
@no 8, being anti-tithes is left up to each person. It won't change the Bible.

Give food as tithes if you're a farmer or prefer it that way.
You are mixing up a lot of things maybe you do this on purpose. But I repeat, tithing is not offering. Tithing is a tax system.

I earlier told you that I am not against offering and gifts if any kind so long as it is done willingly.

Yes, tithe is only food. The passage u half quoted says you should use the money to buy food. The reason for the money is just ease of transportation and nothing else. You seem also to forget that the tithe was meant to beceaten by you and your household. Yes it should be eaten before God, guess where God is as at today.... Your body is his temple.. The temple veil was not torn for nothing. Like u said "read the whole bible or no bible".

The belief that tithe is food is from them bible ....be a little bit honest.
So mercy overturned the law of stonibg an adulterous woman but couldn't overturn the law of tithing? Is that mercy complete?

The widow you quoted did not pay tithe... She gave willingly and that is what Jesus wants. Can you read the preceding verses to see how Jesus condemned those that oppress the poor, that was what led to that story. Read it, it won't hurt.

I ask your question 'are you saying that the law of tithing is greater than the grace of Christ?'

Tithing was for the poor....widows, orphans, strangers, Levite's (who has no inheritance). The church us not the building... The people are the church including the poor...if everything us going to the poor then everything us going to the church. But again, no one is against giving.
No 6. Tithing is a law yes or no?

No, tithe is only in food and not for Christians. Christians are not under the law.

If the bolded is your problem with paying tithes, why on Earth would you give your money to anybody else as well knowing that they, too, can misappropriate your funds?

The problem many people have is that they think their tithes enter the pastor's pocket. This is possible in every scenario of giving but that's not what you know is going on for a fact. You're assuming pastors don't work or receive gifts from people. You assume they sit in the church all day and do nothing else but that.

When you attend a programme in church, sit under the air conditioner, burning energy as you come to read your Bible in a conducive environment, applaud the artistes brought in, do you think it's the pastor's personal money or your tithes that do it? Who will pay those bills? The church? Is there church a money doubling bank? Where does the money come from?

When hungry people are fed by your church in outreach programmes and the less fortunate in the building are catered for, do you imagine it to be the pastor's personal money or your tithes and offerings? You need them to announce this to you, how the most minute one buck was spent? They do these things without announcing it to you.

When visits are made to orphanages by your church, prisoners are fed, is it the pastor's own money or tithes and offerings? Do you know the joy those visits give the prisoners? Have you seen them dancing and happy when the churches visit them? Do you need them to tell you they do this?

You see, your reluctance to pay tithes destroys your obedience to the last instruction gave to you to preach the gospel to every creature. You can't reach them all by yourself. That's why there is the church.

When you give money to people, do you stop to preach to them? No. But the church does that. Do you personally go to feed prisoners to your own righteousness or to spread the word of God? But the church does it for you, so why don't you think you should pay your tithes in church?

Why go to church when you don't care about how it will be run? Why enjoy it's facilities if you think they shouldn't be maintained with your tithes? Do you want the pastor to pay for you from his pocket to preach to you everyday when you can help him spread the word of God? Is he capable of that?

If you're giving it to people on the street who don't know or care about God, I hope that they, and you, continue to spread the word of God. You don't know if they will use it to buy alcohol when you've gone, or if they will use it in any licentious manner.

You giving tithes to people in the street who you think are poor is killing the gospel on that person and not spreading it as Jesus said you should. Give them but don't neglect giving to the work of God except you wish to carry it on by yourself.

Or do you want a breakdown of every 500 bucks spent by the church? Have you met organizations you give your money to, or individuals, demanding to know what the money you gave them was used for?

This anti-tithing movement is pointless.
The work of people who don't really read or understand their Bible. Read all of the Bible or discard all of it. Don't take half. Half of Jesus won't get you to heaven.

One man quotes one verse you agree with and you discard the rest of the things that come after.

If tithing is Jewish, then forget about the ten commandments because that is the Torah.
Live by your own Bible.

I'm not vexing. It's just strange why people don't want to pay tithes again, but expect the most of the church.

Morality isn't Christianity.
Waoh...I really love the way you broke down your message to a layman's understanding. Thanks for that.

I agree on so many points you have raised and I must add that I admire your personality. However, I would love to make some inputs as well
1. The TAP challenge is not against gifts and offering so long as people are not being coerced into giving.
2. Gifts and offerings are free will and never obligatory.
3. Tithe is on food and not money.
4. Tithing in the bible is for the poor.
5. If you won't give to a poor man for fear of him using it to buy alcohol why give to a pastor when he could use it to buy ammunitions.
6. Tithing is a law and Christians believe that they are redeemed from the law including the 10 commandments.
7. Like you rightly said "read all the bible or discard all". The bible clearly said that tithing in on food. Are you sure you are reading all the bible?
8 the antitithe message is against erroneous teachings established as doctrines like tithing.

Who said you're giving your tithes and offerings to a man of God? This is like saying contributing to a motherless babies home is enriching those in charge of it. You're not considering that it actually goes into use.

And how can you judge if a person is poor or not? Poverty is relative. That a person looks poor" to you doesn't mean that they are.

So how do you know who you're giving to? Same difference as giving it in a church.

If you want to do some goodwill, do so. Don't call it tithing.
I have always thought that tithes and offerings were for the men of god. No vex, you can enlighten me. Who are they meant for.

As for motherless babies' homes, if those who take care of such homes are living porch lifestyles with no other known jobs they are doing. Your guess is as good as mine....giving them money will be enriching them. Simple.

That is the challenge, identify the genuinely poor and help out of poverty.

Is it the name 'tithe' included that is an issue or is the idea not a good one?

90% is not tithe, but the man said how can he give God 10% and keep 90%. He said he better give to God the 90 while he keeps the 10. That was a risky move, so God decided to bless him in abundance. God said it in the bible, that if we tithe, we should try him and see if he will not open the windows of heaven and rain down unto us Blessings.
But you know that you only answered just one question? Is 90% thithe?

Please try and attempt the others.... How did he give to God? How did God bless him? Did he reinvest the 10%. Is he still giving God 90%?

https://www.bible-bridge.com/pauls-income-four-reasons-why-paul-worked-day-job/
i came across a post somewhere here where Paul was quoted saying those who do gospel shd be supported by the gospel. While that is true, someone pointed out that Paul himself didn't take advantage of that. This is ALSO TRUE. He actually worked A LOT and turned down what we could term financial help from some 'churches' then cos he didnt wanna be stained by any corruption. All the passages backing that are in the link up there. But he also had pple who supported him willingly too. The key word here being WILLINGLY. No one is saying dont support the church, even Jesus who lived the simplest of lives by the way, had women who bankrolled his ministry, but this support was never tagged as TITHE, ditto for Paul. It was a WILLFUL DONATION NOT A TITHE. Argue with this all you want, doesnt change the facts.....esp when we are using Jesus as the standard, and not sacrifices and rules before him, some of which includes that stubborn children shd be killed.

Also, for those who want to follow double standards, and want to choose old testament verses that suit their agenda, tithes was food back then. Do we agree it was food? If so, at what point did it become money, afterall there was money at that time too( gold, silver and even some clear-cut currencies)

Bottomline, everyone has free will to use his resources to whatever end. But dont come and tell me bullshit that has no backing and expect me to swallow it when i know better. Give to the church, give to GOOD ministers (not takking about the private jet flying ones o), give to the needy around you as much as you can...al from the goodness of your heart, and not even for expected return, or fear of a non-existent curse. God does love a cheerful giver.
Thanks brother this is the plain gospel truth..'give not expecting return'.

The message of tithing in today's church is supported by two factors.
1. Fear: people are coerced into paying tithe with threats of Hell, and curses. "The comment you quoted was actually cut out from Daddy GO open heaven.
2. Promise: If you give pastors to maintain their posh lifestyles then God will bless you.

This is what we must correct.
