^^^^^lol, so when N15 is paid in three instalments of N5 it is reduced in total value, rflmao. Three toll gates within 24km is excessive, those leaving after Abraham Adesayan would pay three tolls to and fro on each trip to they make via Victoria Island. There should be free alternative route to justify tax payers right.

Oh! The people surely have choices. They could take the bus. Or they could move to the mainland. Or take a walk.Or even use the beach. These are choices albeit less conmfortable choices.

I have a friend who thinks it is too much too pay 1000 naira a night for hospital admission, but would gladly cough out 12k per night for hotel accommodation. It is an absurd thinking pattern and it is very common with Nigerians and that is my grouse. We must begin to learn how to pay for things.
Lekki residents buy land at an average of 40 million per plot. If you ask them to contribute just 1 milliion to develop infrastructure on their street which they would enjoy, you will hear them complaining.
FYI, there are charges like Infrastructure Development levy (IDC) Title perferction and VAT charges paid to LASG all these amounting to about 15% of value of property and there is yearly tenement rate also. Those who bought 1004 flats paid N1.2m per flat to LASG as IDC alone.

ACN should really manage this issue very well, the tax in Lagos state is the most aggressive in Nigeria with people paying as much as 20% of their earnings to Lagos state, even when their kids don't go to govt school, not govt power, not govt water or hospital. If the road is built solely from private revenue, then what happened to all tenement rates, taxes and other charges paid by Lekki Ajah residents to LASG. Rival political party could promise otherwise and get some sympathy. Oyinlola did the same to Akande in Osun State while he promised to reabsorb all laid off workers, even though Akande had a good reason to do that. The workers naturally voted Akande out.

Why, why why do Police Chief have to lie, even shamelessly the other time Ribadu was in Nigeria to pay homage to Gani after death, IGP denied his entering Nigeria even when he was a wanted man and the visit was shown on TV. Now police is saying no policemen was at the scene of this accident and the FRSC is saying 5 policemen perished. Can't they wait to get their facts right before making a statement as done in civilised lands?

I just watched the video of the girl and I think she must be regretting her actions by now. No doubt, what she did is wrong but since she is remorseful, she should be forgiven, Ina Lah Gafur Raheem. I do not recommend any other punishment from the school against her. Personal regret and the thought of unnecessary pains she cause the UI community should be enough.

Family17-year-old Girl Gives Birth To Baby Boy In Kirikiri by Remii(op): 7:53pm On Aug 14, 2010

Detained for stealing, 17-year-old girl gives birth to baby boy in Kirikiri
Comfort Oseghale
If Baby Monday is not Kirikiri Minimum Prison‘s youngest inmate, he will certainly be one of the youngest. Her mother is being detained in the prison and was delivered of him only 13 days ago.

For obvious reasons, Monday’s arrival could not be marked with any fanfare. There were no visits from friends and relations and there were no shouts of congratulations or offer of gifts.

Baby Monday was born at the Lagos Island Maternity, where officials of the prison had taken Comfort, his mother, as soon as she went into labour on August 1, 2010. Comfort is awaiting trial for allegedly stealing the sum of N200,000 belonging to her boss, but she insists she is innocent of her alleged crime.

Spokesman of the Nigerian Prisons Service, Mr. Ope Fatinikun said the prison was well equipped to take care of nursing inmates and their babies. ‘‘There are so many inmates who come in here pregnant, although they might not know it. As a matter of fact, we do conduct pregnancy tests for them immediately they are brought here and the results are shown to them. So, we are equipped to take care of them and their babies. There is a clinic attached to the prison and in case of any emergency, we do refer them to the General hospital,‘‘ Fatinikun said.

But he added that the baby could only be kept in the prison for 18 months. ‘‘The law states that it is not in the best interests of the child for him or her to discover that they were born in the prison. So when the child is 18 months old and no relative has come to take them away, the prison is empowered by law to take them to the SOS children‘s village where they might be put up for adoption,‘‘ he said

Comfort‘s journey to Kirikiri began when she met her former boss, Nwitua Nadum, at Elele Alimini, Rivers State sometime last year. ‘‘I knew him as my landlord‘s friend,‘‘ she said, adding that she was then selling sachet water otherwise called pure water, having had to halt her education at Primary Four because of financial constraints.

She said, ‘‘I am the fourth of seven children. We have always struggled to survive. But things became particularly bad after my paternal grandmother died. My elder siblings didn‘t have much of education either, so they are not better off. My eldest brother pushes a wheel barrow in the market for a living while my father is a farmer. I was fetching water one day when Nadum came around. He asked what I was doing at home and I said I had to stop school because there was no money. He then said it was a pity that a pretty girl like me was suffering when someone could have helped me to live a better life. Later, my father told me that I would go to Lagos with Nadum to be his house help, and in return, he (Nadum) would send me to school.‘‘

Nadum lived alone at his 2 Owode Street, Abule Egba, Lagos residence, while his wife and children lived abroad. Comfort said apart from household chores, she also assisted with the sale of compressors and air conditioners at Nadum’s shop. She said that contrary to what her father had told her, she only attended school for a month after which Nadum ordered her to withdraw. ‘‘My boss pulled me out of school when he started molesting me,‘‘ she alleged. ‘‘I called my father and told him that he should come here and take me away, but he told me that he had no money to travel down to Lagos.‘‘

When our correspondent called Comfort‘s father on the phone and told him that his daughter was being incarcerated in Kirikiri Medium Prison and that she had been delivered of a baby boy, the man went hysterical. ‘‘I don‘t know why Nadum would do that to my child. I can never do such a thing to somebody else‘s child. I leave everything in the hands of God. He did all this to me and yet I didn‘t get a penny from him,‘‘ he said.

Asked if he intended to claim his grandchild, Comfort‘s father replied, ‘‘I don‘t have any money to come to Lagos.‘‘

Comfort claimed she had cried to her boss‘s wife for help when the lady came to Nigeria. ‘‘I told her what I had been passing through in the hands of her husband. To my surprise, she felt unconcerned. She just told me it wasn‘t her business.‘‘ She said that Mrs. Nadum concluded her business in Nigeria and travelled out again without addressing her husband‘s alleged offences. ‘‘When I discovered that I was pregnant a few months later, I was scared. I confided in a neighbour who everyone called Mama. She told me to abort the baby, that I was too young to bear the responsibility of bringing up a child.‘‘

Comfort said although she was terrified by the pregnancy she feared abortion. ‘‘I asked her what would happen if after aborting the baby I discovered later in life that I couldn‘t have children anymore,‘‘ she said.

She also said that when she told Nadum about the pregnancy, she denied it. ‘‘I told my boss I was pregnant and he told me it was none of his business,‘‘ she said, adding that she had to bear the shame of a growing tummy and curious stares of neighbours.

Recalling the circumstances in which she landed in prison, she said, “I think it was around January 10 when my boss called me on the phone to attend to a customer who had come to buy compressors. He had travelled out of Lagos. I went to the shop and met with the person. We negotiated a price but the customer didn‘t have the whole amount. I called my boss and told him, and he told me to collect what the man had and give it to the gateman. I counted the money, it was 95,000 naira, and I gave it to the gateman.‘‘

The next day, Nadum returned home but the gateman did not report for duty. ‘‘I went to a phone booth and tried the gateman‘s phone number several times but it was switched off. When I told my boss about it, he was very angry. The next day, policemen from Oko Oba Police station, Abule Egba came to the house and arrested me.‘‘

At the police station, another drama played out. ‘‘My boss told the policemen that he had lost N200,000 to me. He told them that it was because I had stolen the money from him that I started saying he was responsible for my pregnancy.‘‘ Comfort said she was three months pregnant at the time she was arrested.

The 17-year-old was arraigned at the Abule Egba Magistrate Court on January 26, 2010. Unfortunately, she had no one to pay for her bail in the sum of N50,000. Copies of the charge sheet made available to our correspondent revealed that the initial age filled for comfort was 17 years before it was cancelled and replaced with 18. But Comfort herself insists she is 17. The only person who can come forward with proof of the girl‘s age is her father in Rivers State who claims he is cash strapped and unable to make the trip to Lagos.

Efforts made by our correspondent to get Nadum’s reaction yielded no result as the voice that answered the calls our correspondent made to his phone repeatedly claimed it was wrong number. He also did not respond to text messages sent to his phone, forcing our correspondent to visit his residence at Plot 2 Owode Street, Abule Egba, Lagos. While the place looked deserted, two children who opened the gate after persistent knocks and and claimed to be Nadum’s niece and nephew, told our correspondent, after asking what her mission was, that Nadum was not at home.

Further effort made to get him on his MTN and Zain lines also yielded no result. “I am not Nadum,” a voice said on the phone and hung up.

Jonathan effects new cabinet change

Ihuoma Chiedozie, Abuja
President Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday inaugurated three new ministers, a special adviser and two commissioners of the Independent National Electoral Commission.

The new ministers, who were cleared by the Senate on Tuesday were Chief Kenneth Gbagi, Minister of State for Education; Mrs. Yabawa Wabi, Minister of State for Finance; and Hajiya Salamatu Suleman, Minister of State 11 for Foreign Affairs.

The new Special Adviser is Prof. Dan Adebiyi, who will serve as Special Adviser to the President on Policy. Ambassador . Mohammed Wali and Dr. Chris Iyimoga are the new INEC commissioners.

Mr. Remi Babalola, who until Wednesday morning was the Minister of State for Finance was elevated to a full minister. He is now in charge of the Special Duties ministry.

Babalola served twice as a Minister of State for Finance under the administration of the late President Umaru Yar’Adua and Jonathan.

He replaces Captain Caleb Olubolade (retd.), who was moved to the Ministry of the Federal Capital Territory Administration as the Minister of State.

However, after announcing the new cabinet portfolios, Jonathan refuted media speculations that he was planning a major cabinet reshuffle.

He attributed the reports to what he described as a “sponsored press war” against his administration by interest groups which he did not name.

The President also noted that the speculations had had a negative impact on government business, as individuals and organisations that had business engagements with ministries opted to stay away until the situation became clear.

Jonathan also explained that the redeployment of Babalola and Olubolade, was a fundamental aspect of service.

He, however, said that nobody would have an inkling of a cabinet reshuffle whenever he decided to do so.

Turning to journalists at the Council Chambers of the State House, where the inauguration took place, Jonathan said, “There are sometimes sponsored stories about senior staff of government to be removed or redeployed. Yes, we serve government and redeployment is a part of our service.

“A minister that is to be redeployed or is being redeployed is not an indictment, but for one reason or the other, in some cases to strengthen some other departments of government.

“But what we read in the media conveys a kind of sponsored press war; this is not helpful to the nation. If a minister is not to be removed and you continue to tell the world that the minister is to be removed, what you publish affects the ministry drastically.

“People who have one thing or the other to do with that ministry will become careful, they want to wait for the day the minister is to be removed which will not come.

“I assure you that if I am to redeploy a minister you will not know until the announcement is made. So, all these speculations about redeployment or removal, I plead with the media, please help Nigeria, because you are not serving us if you publish spurious stories sponsored by some interests groups.”

The President informed all the newly inaugurated government officials that they had taken an oath to serve the country.

He, therefore, challenged them to do their best for the country.

The President said, “Today (Wednesday), we have sworn in three ministers, two INEC chairmen and one special adviser to serve. You have taken your oath of office, not to serve Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, but to serve Nigeria and Nigerians.

“I charge you to go and do your best to serve our dear country and motherland to make sure that we improve on any situation that we meet as we go to the office.”

Meanwhile, a source in the Presidency has denied reports that the President intended to sack the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Dieziani Alison-Madueke.

Alison-Madueke’s name was prominent among those mentioned in the reports as having been pencilled in for sack.

The source, who asked not be named, described the listing of the minister as the handiwork of her “political opponents.”

If your ulcer is so bad that you cant fast with it, you are exempted. You can elect to provide for someone fasting Muslims, if possible you should take care of both the early morning meals and the Iftar thoughout the period. However, make sure you dont go about abusing your condition by eating openly in the public during Ramadan or engage in acts that nullify fast. Discuss with Islamic scholars around you. Do not attempt suicide by continue fasting if your condition do not permit you. Remmember, Islam is simple, you dont need to carry any load heavier that you, There is no compulsion in religion.

The boys began to argue over who would get the first pancake.
Their mother saw the opportunity for a moral lesson.
'If Jesus were sitting here, He would say,

Kevin turned to his younger brother and said,
' Ryan , you be Jesus !'

A father was at the beach with his children
when the four-year-old son ran up to him,
grabbed his hand, and led him to the shore

'Daddy, what happened to him?' the son asked.
'He died and went to Heaven,' the Dad replied.
The boy thought a moment and then said,
'Did God throw him back down?'

A wife invited some people to dinner.
At the table, she turned to their six-year-old daughter and said,

'I wouldn't know what to say,' the girl replied.
'Just say what you hear Mommy say,' the wife answered.
The daughter bowed her head and said,
'Lord, why on earth did I invite all these people to dinner?'

Obasanjo blasts senators

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo yesterday accused the National Assembly of being a burden to the nation’s lean purse.
According to him, the amount being spent in maintaining the federal lawmakers is draining the nation’s resources and should be checked immediately.
Indeed, the former president said it was difficult to understand how much precisely a senator takes home yearly in the name of constituency projects. He warned that something must be done about this if the fledging democracy is to be sustained.

The chairman of Board of Trustees of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) spoke during a one-day retreat organised for the Niger State senior civil servants by the state government.
At the retreat themed: Strategising to Re-invigorate Niger State for the Achievement of Vision 3:2020, Chief Obasanjo noted that Nigeria could not afford to have a National Assembly that is corrupt and consuming a disproportional part of the nation’s resources.

“We should look closely at the legislature so that they can be more open and transparent in the way they do their work. Nobody knows in detail how much it costs us to maintain a senator. I believe it is more than N250 million. Compare what it cost in 1999 and 2000, it cost about $1.7 million compared to a quarter of a million in America, They came up and say something is constituency project, what is this constituency project? They insert it in the budget, they would find the contractor and the contractor would work for them, that is constituency project? They then accuse some people of corruption, who is not corrupt?

“Now let us talk truly and seriously to ourselves; we can’t continue to have a National Assembly that is consuming a disproportional part of our resources and then expect that we would be able to make progress. They pass budget that can’t be implemented, because it has to be beefed up to satisfy their whims and caprices. Even what the ministries did not ask for they put it,” Obasanjo said.
Fielding questions from the participants who included the state executive council members, state assembly members and other top government officials on the difference between military and democratic governance, Obasanjo pointed out that democracy as practised in Nigeria was costly and cumbersome. He said for Nigeria to progress, leaders must discharge their duties with every sense of responsibility without tribal or religious sentiments.

The State governor, Muazu Babagida Aliyu, in his own comment commended the former president for his style of leadership during his eight years rule, saying he did his best to deliver the dividend of democracy and treated every Nigerian based on merit.
