Literature › Re: Bode Asiyanbi Wins BBC Play-Writing Award by RemiOAjayi: 7:07pm On May 02, 2019 |
LazyGold: Since Africa’s first Nobel Prize for Literature winner, Professor Wole Soyinka, blazed the trail in 1986 by taking home that prestigious prize, the seed sown has spawned several other acorns scattered all over the land.
Nigerian writers in different genres of literature have been persistently pushing the limits of creative writing.
Ben Okri, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Nnedi Okorafor and several other young writers from Nigeria have shown through their works that another Nobel Prize may just be around the bend.
Asiyanbi is the writer and the brain behind the story of ‘Chief Daddy’ that was filmed by Niyi Akinmolayan and produced by EbonyLife Film.
He won his third award in play-writing from BBC International Play-writing Competition shortly after the cinema release of ‘Chief Daddy.’
The trained Biochemist and graduate of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, ended 2018 on a high by winning the Georgi Markov prize for the most promising script, in the BBC International Play-writing Competition.
EbonyLive TV’s premiere of ‘Chief Daddy’ drew over 40 movie stars.
The BBC play-writing prize is in honour of the BBC World Service journalist and writer, Georgi Markov, who championed freedom of creative expression.
According to the BBC, Bode’s interest in writing grew after he was selected as one of the winners in the now defunct BBC African Performance radio drama series.
In 2005, he won the BBC Africa Performance Play-writing competition with the play ‘Big Dialed, and his radio play, ‘Shattered’ won the 2011 BBC African performance play-writing competition.
Born in Osogbo, Osun State, Bode Asiyanbi studied at the Obafemi Awololwo University and Lancaster University, United Kingdom.
He was for many years writer and editor for BBC Media Action on its groundbreaking radio and television drama series, Story Story and Wetin Dey, as well as for the ‘Save the Children’ developmental documentary.
He presently works with various M-Net African Magic’s comedy and drama series as a writer and story editor.
His plays have also been broadcast on the BBC World Service.
Asiyanbi’s short stories have appeared in Munyori Literary Journal, Kalahari Review, Wobbled Words Anthology, and Per Contra.
His stage play ‘Shattered’ was performed at the 2013 British Council Lagos Theatre Festival, and his short story, ‘The Diagnosis’ was a winning entry for the British Council Lagos Theatre Festival 2014.
His poems also featured in the anthology of contemporary African poetry, ‘A Thousand Voices Rising’.
Asiyanbi’s plays ‘The Wait’ and ‘One Chance!’ won the British Council LTF 2016 and 2017 Playwriting Prize, and his poems also featured in the anthology of contemporary African poetry, A Thousand Voices Rising.
Bode describes himself as “a wandering troubadour from a long line of village weavers and palace bards; spinning coloured yarns, seeking out lost songs and singing them out from rooftops.”
He is interested in exploring trauma, identity and the place of memory in history.

nairavsdollars: * Vows Not To Recognise Buhari As President- Elect
Chief Ayo Adebanjo, elder statesman and leader of pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, has described the 2019 presidential election won by President Muhammadu Buhari as a farce, saying he could not recognise him as president-elect.
In a chat with Daily Independent, Adebanjo expressed optimism that Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), would reclaim his mandate at the court.
He said the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) wrongly declared President Buhari as winner of the election.
He said: “The election was a farce. I don’t regard Buhari as president. Buhari was wrongly declared winner by Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). When we get to court, we would know who the real president is.
“How can you call Buhari president with the way the presidential election was conducted in a 21st century Nigeria? Look at the elections, they were completely militarised. Corps members were openly kidnapped to rig the elections.
“Nobody would tell me such elections would be recognised by the court. We would not be violent. Let the court not ignore the evidence that would be put before it.”
Also speaking on the performance of Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman of INEC, Adebanjo described it as woeful.
He said the 2019 election conducted under his watch was the worst in Nigeria’s history.
“He has performed below expectation. This election is one of the worst in the country’s history. The misrepresentation of Atiku at the collation centres, the cancelled votes and other irregularities show that there was no free and fair election.
“In so many states, there were irregularities. If you look at it well, Atiku won by more than three million votes, which Buhari claimed to have won.
“We would place all our facts in the judiciary and we know they would deliver.
“I am not one of those people who would say don’t go to court. Why would I say that? Atiku would get justice there. If he does not get justice, he would get justice in the view of the people because the people know the truth. I am telling the judiciary not to disgrace themselves by ignoring the fact.”
Also speaking on Vice President Yemi Osinbajo’s opposition to the restructuring of Nigeria, Adebanjo described him as a dishonest intellectual and a disgrace, saying it was surprising that Osinbajo and Bola Tinubu would be opposed to restructuring on which basis they were elected to office.
“The vice president is a dishonest intellectual. Tinubu and Osinbajo came to office on the basis of restructuring, and it was on the basis of restructuring that Osinbajo took Obasanjo to court when, during his time as president, Obasanjo did not release local government funds when he (Osinbajo) was the Attorney General in Lagos State.
“They are just turning blind eyes to it. I know him, he is my son.
“Intellectually, academically he is a first class, but he is a disgrace.
“Somebody who was born into restructuring is saying he does not know what restructuring is all about. His father and I were key followers of Awolowo.”
Also speaking on the elections, Chief Ebenezer Babatope, a former Minister of Transport, said he was not surprised at the outcome of the elections because he knew all along that the APC would manipulate the results.
Babatope, a member of the PDP’s Board of Trustees (BoT), however, said the PDP had not lost hope because the judiciary would right the wrongs just as it did with the Osun governorship election.
“I must confess that I am not surprised that APC manipulated that election. The matter is now before the tribunal and the PDP has already protested, but I knew all the time that APC was going to manipulate the 2019 elections and they did. But that notwithstanding, we have not lost hope.
“We believe we will have cause to celebrate when the tribunal delivers its judgment because the judiciary now is the only hope of the common man and it must ensure that it defends the interest of the common people of this country; otherwise, the country would have lost the right to call itself a democratic nation. “Buhari has come back under questionable circumstances and for which I am happy that Atiku Abubakar, our presidential candidate, has gone to the tribunal,” Babatope said.

The more the bickering between the Tinubu group and the Afenifere, the more the hope of a common Yoruba agenda become elusive. Bros leave those Afenifebi... what is important is a clear vision of the right direction from Jagaban and some of them will either fall in line or die of frustration. even Jesus Christ was hated so is normal |

PrecisionFx: Before u rant more in a mad manner, I am not a PDP member or supporter.
In 1999 our textile industry was not working, Nigga how old are u sef? We imported almost everything we wear from shoes to clothes n bags, mind u Nigeria didn't start in 1999, Bad leadership from 1970 till today was what destroyed Nigeria, it's quite daft trying to link up those problems with PDP.
NITEL was comatose as at 1999 so I wander what nonsense ur blabbing by saying PDP destroyed or sold NITEL...did PDP destroy NITEL? U also didn't want to see that PDP brought mobile telecom into Nigeria and it has been a great success till today, in fact that has changed Nigeria for ever.
Boko haram is simply a terrorist group attacking Nigeria, just like there are terrorist groups attacking America, Europe, Asia and other African countries. Pointing at boko haram as something caused by PDPreally puts a question mark on ur head.
Nigeria's problems stems from decades of ignorance, tribalism, mass stupidity, corruption etc. Stop talking like ur dullard who thinks Nigeria started in 1999.
Head to head, we had far better times under PDP n with apc all we have had is backwardness, poverty and lifelessnees When u got beaten u are shifting post, u were the one that compared PDP with APC and i showed u that there was no BH until PDP era and the same happened with our importation. 1999 textiles were not working ? perhaps u were still in primary school then. United textiles, Arewa textile, finetex etc... check them out, what was suppose to be the work of PDP suppoing they were not even working ? PDP is better and u queue as if you were under a spell to buy 4 litres of fuel ? do you still do that ? so u think is best to compare 4 to 16? |

Apc is 50 times worse than PDP, that's the issue being discussed here. Talk is cheap put your evidence forward... here are mine, As at 1999 all out textiles industries were still working especially those ones located in Kaduna before 2007 they have all died. We imported to the extent of importing toothpick. When was BK started in Nigeria, PDP era or APC why do they kill General Owoye Andrew Azazi ? Where is Nitel ? do you know how much infrastructures your useless party wasted in NITEL ? Nigeria Sugar company what about NEPA do you know they also claimed they invested 16 Billion dollars before they eventually sold it off to their friends. we that do real thinking not sentimental attachment will never support that evil called PDP... |

A party built on lies n deceit of the masses Olodo ni e... all evils u see today in Nigeria or politics were started and initiated by evil call PDP. u said PDP short comings ? is only shot comings or colossal failure? made Nigeria import dependant, created bogus salaries for politicians, created BK,sold national treasury for personal gain, institutionalised corruption? u wanna trivialise those offences ? in a sane society we should ban PDP and their apologies from contesting for at least 10 years |
