Politics › Re: Fuel Subsidy: After Seven Years, Buhari Transfers Burden To Successor by RepoMan007: 8:03am On Jan 29, 2022 |
Winters23: Technically this problem will resolve itself with the passing of time.
Dangote refinery is expected to begin production within the next 18 months and if the reports are correct, it can supply local demand and thus ending import of pms and subsidy dies a natural death.
But who knows dangote will still collect subsidy to sell below 150 naira per liter, these are just possibilities.
Good days in sight guys... Even with Dangote producing petrol, subsidy can still be maintained. It is a matter of the govt buying from Dangote at prevailing market rate then selling to Nigerians at lower or subsidized rate. |

His successor too is likely to follow him and leave behind their own contradictions and outright falsehood because they will want to run for another 4 years and at the end of that four years want to handover to a loyal party member who can cover their own track. We are stuck politically because even if there is a change in ruling party, the masses won't allow the only tangible benefit of theirs in One-Nigeria project slip away. |

Moferere: “We cannot believe NNPC’s claim that Nigeria consumes over 65 million litres a day is outrageous. All of them will be summoned to explain what is happening. We also hope to summon customs and others to explain how petrol is being smuggled out of the country. Are tankers going through bush paths?”
This is what a responsible govt should have done from day one in office. Block out all leakages and act proactively as new loopholes are targeted by fraudulent marketers. |
Politics › Re: 2022: NNPC Presents N3trn Subsidy Bill To FEC by RepoMan007: 12:04pm On Jan 27, 2022 |
backbencher: The reason why NNPC has such a high subsidy bill is simple
It anticipates that the cost of producing one liter of fuel would rise higher than the 163 naira cost price set by goverment this year.
Thus the cost of subsidy would rise.
The rise is aggravated by the fact that the value of the naira is also falling due to the fact that we spend a lot of Forex on subsidies and importing fuel
There is a reason why subsidy must go. We cannot waste trillions of money keeping fuel cheap
Modifed
A s oil prices go up, the cost of producing fuel goes up...meaning that we end up spending more on subsidizing fuel.
At the time we raised fuel to N165, it cost N180 to land one liter of fuel. Now it is N260. And rising. The difference between that N162 government price and the 'landing' price is what government pays in subsidy. And as you can see, costs are rising....because the production cost is rising.
Also, smuggling, stealing and so on are there.
Removing subsides while bringing about high prices, would end the corruption and smuggling and encourage domestic refining of fuel, ending importation of fuel
Modifed
Landing cost as at today is N282 naira
Last year June it was N232 naira.
Above per liter.
In 2018 it was N180 per liter by September of that year.
In 2012, it was N99 per liter, in January
See what I mean. Politics is too important to the elites that they cannot agree on a good time to remove it. It is either elections are approaching of an incumbent is trying to secure reelection victory. This current government joined in opposing subsidy removal in the past and that makes it more difficult for them to sell your argument to the people even though it is quite logical. If we must remove subsidy, we should be looking to have local refineries and completion in place but that is clearly lacking. I suggest they follow alternative energy options deligently to provide some options and competition to petrol. If the govt was honest about subsidy fraud, it could have bursted it by now. Another option is to maintain subsidy and monitor who is getting what from Dangote refinery to reduce subsidy fraud among marketers. |

Ovamboland: $30bn is 41cents daily for each Nigerian, about 205 naira. Now what can you achieve with 205 naira daily? If not much, how do you expect politician to help you spend it to deliver world class healthcare, education and infrastructure for all? That's why we need to restructure economically and fiscally. Instead of trying to share out our dwindling oil earnings why not restructure the country and allow people express themselves economically. I as a person for example, believe I can generate over N100 tax daily if given the right environment. I know many Nigerians can dwarf that figure easily too. It is better to allow people contribute than trying to sustain people just because politicians want to remain popular across regional and party or religious lines. Any serious leader in this country will first have to restructure in order to make any tangible forward or positive change. |

Shokoloko: Manufacturing doesn't need thought or intelligence at the lowest point (which is what they are bringing to Africa). Design thinking will surely remain in China. From his theory, the average Nigerian will have an underpaying labour intensive job, but for starters it will be a job. We have a 33.3% unemployment rate and hopefully with many youths employed (sub optimally) they will be able to afford just the basic necessities of life. According to Marslow's theory, it is only after a person has food and shelter that they can apply their brains. The Chinese will help fulfil the first stage in Africa. Whether we will rise beyond that stage is what I know not You mean manufacturing needs stupidity more than intelligence? Why aren't we manufacturing capital already then? |

COMPAQ: I like your enthusiasm, unfortunately it is very much misplaced. Companies want an environment with good infrastructure to manufacture (electricity, ports, transportation network, rule of law, judicial fairness, airports, exchange rate stability etc) and Nigeria has none of these! Also our youth are literate but companies need more than that. They need well educated and we don’t have that unfortunately. A primary 6 person from US, is mentally sharper and more aware than a ss3 student from here, cos our education doesn’t encourage thinking - just cramming and passing exams. No application. There are many countries in Africa that will attract the so called billions from Amazon and co such as Ghana, SA, Rwanda, Morocco, Egypt, Kenya before Nigeria. Correct. |
