Health / Dog Tests Positive For Coronavirus In Hong Kong by reporterslab: 3:41am On Feb 29, 2020
As humans throughout the world grapple with the widespread outbreak of the novel coronavirus, a pet dog has been found to have a "low level" of the virus, a spokesperson for the Hong Kong's agriculture, fisheries and conservation department said in a statement Friday. Dogs, cats and other mammals owned as pets by confirmed coronavirus patients must now undergo a 14-day quarantine, the spokesperson added.

The department said the dog, whose owner was infected with coronavirus, tested "weak positive" for COVID-19 virus after its nasal and rectal samples were collected for testing earlier this week.

"The nasal and oral cavity samples were tested weak positive to COVID-19 virus," the department's statement read. "The dog does not have any relevant symptoms."

Despite the preliminary test result on the animal, there is no evidence to suggest pets could be infected or be a source of infection for humans, according to the statement. The department will undergo further testing on the dog to see if it's really been infected with the virus or a result of "environmental contamination" of its mouth and nose.

At the moment, officials said it's the only dog under quarantine at the animal-keeping facility at Hong Kong Port of Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge.

CBS News' Grace Qi reports veterinarians in Hong Kong are also calling for calm after the "weak positive" case was announced. Experts said it's very unlikely that pets such as dogs and cats could be infected with the coronavirus, as very few viruses can jump between species.

Health / Having 10 Or More Sexual Partners Linked To Increased Risk Of Cancer by reporterslab: 3:21am On Feb 15, 2020
A new study published in the journal BMJ Sexual & Reproductive Health finds that people who have 10 or more sexual partners during their lifetimes have a higher chance of being diagnosed with cancer.

The study found that women who have had at least 10 sexual partners during their lifetimes were 91% more likely to develop cancer than women with one or zero partners. Similarly, men with 10 or more partners were 64% more likely to be diagnosed with cancer than those with one or zero partners.

The study was based on 2,537 men and 3,185 women in the UK who are at least 50 years old and part of the English Longitudinal Study of Aging. The average age of the study participants was 64.

The researchers used logistic regression to determine the link between the number of sexual partners and cancer risk, adjusting for “sociodemographic and health-related covariates.”

“Previous research has shown that specific STIs (sexually transmitted infections) may lead to several cancers,” one of the study’s authors, Lee Smith, is quoted as telling Reuters.

“It is interesting the risk is higher in women when compared to men. This may be because the link between certain STIs and cancer is stronger in women,” he added.

The study also found that men were three times more likely to have 10 or more sexual partners compared to women. Only 16% of women surveyed had between five and nine sexual partners. In addition, women with 10 or more sexual partners were 64% more likely to report a limiting, long-standing illness compared to women with only one or zero sexual partners. However, the researchers were not able to pinpoint differences between the men and women’s self-rated health based on the number of sexual partners they had during their lifetimes.

Politics / Breaking:supreme Court Nullifies Bayelsa Governor-elect’s Election, Declares PDP by reporterslab: 2:51pm On Feb 13, 2020
The Supreme Court on Thursday nullified the election of Bayelsa State governor-elect, David Lyon and his running mate, Biobarakuma Degi-Eremienyo, who were already preparing to be inaugurated into office.

A five-man panel of the apex court led by Justice Mary Peter-Odili ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission to withdraw the Certificate of Return issued to the All Progressives Congress’ candidates as the winners of the November 16, 2019 governorship election in the state.

The apex court ordered INEC to issue fresh certificates to the candidates of the party with the next highest votes and with the required constitutional spread of votes in the results of the election, which are the Peoples Democratic Party’s candidates.

Justice Ejembi Ekwo, who read the lead judgment of the apex, made the orders after disqualifying the APC’s deputy governorship candidate, Degi-Eremienyo, as a candidate in the election.

The court upheld the November 12, 2019 judgment of the Federal High Court in Abuja which had disqualified Degi-Eremienyo in the election for submitting forged certificates to INEC.

The court ruled Degi-Eremienyo’s disqualification had infected the joint ticket with which he and the governorship candidate, Lyon, ran for and won the November 16, 2019 election.

Crime / Teenage Raped By Driver She Flagged Down To Help Her by reporterslab: 11:38pm On Jul 27, 2017
Police are now searching for two rapists who attacked the schoolgirl, aged 15, on the same night.

In the first assault, the teenager was approached by an Asian man who raped her in a secluded area of a train station, police said.

Shortly after this attack, the victim, in an agitated state, walked away from the area and flagged down a passing vehicle to ask for help.

The driver offered her lift, but instead of taking her safety he attacked her again.

‘This was a horrifying ordeal for this young girl and we have specially trained officers supporting her,’ Detective Chief Inspector Tony Fitzpatrick, from British Transport Police, said.

Crime / School Pays $125,000 To Family After Teacher Had Sex With Student by reporterslab: 7:33am On Jul 25, 2017
An Oklahoma school district reportedly settled a lawsuit over a 31-year-old English teacher who had sex with an eight-grade student.

The student’s family was paid $125,000.

The Oklahoman reported in June that Jennifer Caswell pleaded guilty to second-degree rape and other charges in Harmon County District Court. Sentencing was set for Aug. 31.

The boy's father said in a federal lawsuit that local school officials let Caswell resign and keep her teaching credentials. He was seeking $1 million for pain, suffering and his son's mental and emotional anguish. The district denies wrongdoing.

The father alleged at least two people saw Caswell engaged in sexual acts with his son in her classroom, when she taught under the name Jennifer Sexton.

After she resigned in April 2014, she had sex with the boy in a vehicle, her house and the boy's father's house, according to prosecutors. After the woman followed him to Mississippi, where he had been sent to say with his mother, the boy began cooperating with authorities.

The boy was 15 at the time of the crimes. The paper reported that Caswell was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

"The district's overall position is that they acted appropriately once they were aware of an issue," lawyer Andy Fugitt told the newspaper.

Crime / New York Man Pleads Guilty To Killing Wife By Setting Her On Fire by reporterslab: 4:25pm On Jul 20, 2017
The man who authorities said poured gasoline on his wife, set her on fire and walked to a police station to turn himself in last March pleaded guilty on Wednesday to the gruesome murder.

Antonio Bargallo, 69, entered the plea as part of a deal that will sentence him to 21 years to life in prison, the Schenectady County District Attorney's office said.

Prosecutors called Bargallo's attack on Elizabeth Gonzales, his wife, incomprehensible.

Maria Suero, a neighbor, told the Albany Times Union that on March 4 she heard a woman screaming her name and saw Gonzales engulfed in flames. Suero said her daughter tried to douse the flames. She told the paper, “I really tried to save her; I really did.”

Career / ZOOKEEPER TRAGEDY: Woman Killed After Tiger Enters Enclosure In UK by reporterslab: 4:43pm On May 30, 2017
A tiger killed a female zookeeper after the animal entered an enclosure she was in at a zoo in England, police said.

Police arrived at Hamerton Zoo Park, located about 80 miles north of London, at 11:15 a.m. after they received reports of a "serious incident."

Air ambulance were at the zoo about 20 minutes later, but the zookeeper died at the scene after the attack. Visitors were evacuated shortly after the incident.

"At no time did the animal escape from the enclosure," Combridgeshire Constabulary wrote on Facebook, adding that they believe there was no foul play.

Eyewitness Jeff Knott, from Cambridgeshire, told Sky News that staff had been "a real credit" to the zoo during the evacuation.

"Staff were very calm and professional. All visitors around us were leaving in a very calm manner — no running, shouting or anything similar," Knott told Sky News.

Hamerton Zoo Park said in a statement that it appeared to be a "freak accident" and a full investigation will be conducted.

"All our thoughts and sympathies are with our colleagues friends and families at this dreadful time. The park will be closed from tomorrow 30th May, and we will give more information as soon as we can," the statement read.

The zoo did not provide any further details on the tiger.

Politics / Man Accused Of Chaining Woman ‘like A Dog’ Pleads Guilty To 7 Murders by reporterslab: 11:36pm On May 26, 2017
A South Carolina man pleaded guilty to murder and kidnapping charges on Friday after he was arrested last year for holding a woman chained "like a dog" inside a storage container; he later was linked to seven murders.

Todd Kohlhepp, 45, accepted a plea deal that sends him to prison for life without parole, Fox Carolina reported. He faced several charges, including four counts of murder in the 2003 deaths of four people at a motorcycle shop in Chesnee, South Carolina.

Kohlhepp was eligible for the death penalty, but the plea deal took that off the table.

BOND DENIED FOR SUSPECT IN 7 MURDERS, KIDNAPPING IN SOUTH CAROLINA

Kohlhepp was arrested in November after investigators said they discovered a woman "chained like a dog" inside a metal container on his property. She was raped and held hostage for more than two months, investigators said. The body of the woman's boyfriend, Charles Carter, was later found in the area.

Kohlhepp later confessed to seven murders within seven months. Search teams began digging on the property after Kohlkepp admitted "to investigators that he shot and killed" the owner, service manager, mechanic and bookkeeper at Superbike Motorsports motorcycle shop in 2003, according to a Spartanburg County Sheriff's investigative report. He gave details that "only the killer would know" and pointed authorities to where the bodies were buried.

He also admitted to killing a husband and wife that was doing work on his property in 2015.

FORMER PASTOR ACCUSED IN PAWN SHOP SLAYINGS PLEADS GUILTY

Kohlhepp was released from prison in Arizona in 2001 after serving a 14-year prison sentence for raping a 14-year-old neighbor at gunpoint and threatening to kill her siblings if she called police. Kohlhepp had to register as a sex offender.

He still received his South Carolina real estate license in 2006 after lying to people about his felony conviction. He ended up building a successful real estate business.

Friends and co-workers at Kohlhepp's real estate business said he was a hard worker with some strange habits. He would watch pornographic videos during work and joked on his firm's website that he motivated workers by not feeding them.

Science/Technology / Terrifying Video Shows Sea Lion Grabbing Young Girl Underwater by reporterslab: 7:29pm On May 21, 2017
Dramatic video shot Saturday shows a large sea lion grabbing and pulling underwater a young girl sitting on a dock near Vancouver.

Canada's CBC News reports that an adult jumped into the water and rescued the girl, who was not hurt.

College student Michael Fujiwara recorded the terrifying scene at the Steveston Fisherman Wharf in Richmond, B.C., with his cell phone, according to the station.

“The sea lion actually attracted a lot of attention from the visitors there, including the young girl,” he told the Vancouver Sun. “She and her family, I guess, they came, they started feeding the animal bread crumbs or whatever it was, and then I guess the animal got a little too comfortable.”

The video shows the animal grabbing the girl who is wearing a white dress and sitting on the edge with her back to the water. Suddenly, she is seen being grabbed from behind by the sea lion and dragged into the water.

A family member dove in after her.

"They were pretty shaken up," Fujiwara told the CBC. "Her family were just in shock."

Andrew Trites, the director of the Marine Mammal Research Unit at the University of British Columbia said the sea lion wasn’t at fault.

"My first reaction to the video is just how stupid some people can be to not treat wildlife with proper respect," he told the CBC. "This was a male California sea lion. They are huge animals. They are not circus performers. They're not trained to be next to people.

Foreign Affairs / US Detained, Released 2 Turkish Security Officers Involved In Massive Fight by reporterslab: 11:44pm On May 18, 2017
The U.S. detained and released two members of the Turkish president's delegation after they were involved in an attack on peaceful protesters outside the Turkish embassy Tuesday.

The diplomatic incident has sparked outrage in Washington and even prompted the State Department to summon the Turkish ambassador.

Violence erupted when Turkish security officials and counter-protesters clashed with demonstrators near the ambassador’s residence, where President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stayed after meetings with President Trump at the White House. The incident left 11 people injured, nine of whom were hospitalized. Washington D.C. police, fire fighters, and EMS all responded, shutting down traffic in the area..

The Turkish security officials were briefly detained at the site of the protest by U.S. law enforcement for their role in the altercation. But because of their diplomatic immunity, they were released on the scene.

"Customary international law affords heads of state and members of their entourage with inviolability from arrest and detention," a State Department official told ABC News. "The United States recognizes this inviolability, which provides reciprocal protection for the United States abroad."

Still, the State Department said it was expressing "concern" to Turkey over the incident "in the strongest possible terms." The U.S. response included summoning the Turkish ambassador to the State Department Wednesday, where he met with Under Secretary of State Tom Shannon, the acting Deputy Secretary.

Two men were also arrested by D.C.'s Metropolitan Police Department on the scene — Jalal Kheirabaoi of Fairfax, VA, and Ayten Necmi of Woodside, NY, according to police reports. It is unclear if they worked for the embassy or were members of the counter-protest.

Members of Congress from both parties have expressed their outrage over the incident. Senator John McCain, R-AZ, and Senator Claire McCaskill, D-MO, both called for the expulsion of Turkey's ambassador.

"Obviously he was in charge of the group of thugs that violated American law and beat up people," McCain told ABC News. "It's disgraceful and shouldn't be happening in the United States of America."

I agree with @SenJohnMcCain.Unacceptable. They were assaulting these people on US soil.Turkish Ambassador should be kicked out of country. https:///PtCS1qG51K

— Claire McCaskill (@clairecmc) May 18, 2017

A State Department official declined to comment on the idea of expelling the ambassador.

McCain also sent a letter to Erdogan along with his Democratic colleague, Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California, calling on him to hold his staffers accountable.

"Your staff’s blatant violation of these rights on American soil is an affront to those freedoms, and reflects poorly on your government," they wrote.

The White House hasn’t commented on the altercation, but President Trump has been criticized for his positive comments on foreign leaders, like Erdogan, who have been criticized for their records on political freedom and human rights.

In their Oval Office meetings Tuesday, Trump did not mention Erdogan's increasingly tight grip on power in Turkey or allegations of irregular elections under his leadership.

Pets / Video: California Dog Bravely Confronts A Black Bear by reporterslab: 10:33pm On May 11, 2017
A plucky pooch patrolling a California backyard was caught on video earlier this week confronting a much bigger trespasser: A black bear.

The video captured the bear jumping a backyard fence in the town of Bradbury and taking a dip in the pool, according to KTLA. The bear ventured into a wooded area and ate some fruit before a family dog confronted it, according to ABC7 Chicago.

OFFICIALS RESCUE 2 BLACK BEAR CUBS AFTER MOM HIT BY PICKUP

The dog stared the bear down and held its ground while the bear roamed the yard. The bear made several attempts to get close to the dog, but the canine kept its distance.

The bear crept closer and closer until the dog chased the bear across the yard. The bear eventually retreated and climbed a fence out of the yard.

Eddie Hsu, the owner of the dog, said he’s proud of his pooch, Ba Bao, Taiwanese for “meat bun.” Hsu said he adopted the canine around a month ago.

“It’s very frightening of course. I have small children. They play in the backyard every day in the afternoon,” Hsu said.

Politics / ‘VIOLENT ATTACK’ 1 Dead, 3 Hurt In Stabbing Spree At UT Austin by reporterslab: 7:52pm On May 02, 2017
A student at the University of Texas Austin attacked his fellow undergraduates Monday with what authorities described as a "Bowie-style hunting knife," killing one man and injuring three others.

UT Austin Police Chief David Carter identified the suspect as 21-year-old Kendrex J. White, who was taken into custody without incident near a gymnasium. Fox 7 reported that White was a biology major and was expected to graduate in 2018.

University President Greg Fenves decried what he called an "unconscionable violent attack" and announced that all classes and activities had been canceled for the day.

"This breaks my heart … that any of our students were touched by tragedy," Fenves said.

DALLAS MANHUNT: PARAMEDIC SHOT, CRITICALLY WOUNDED

The stabbings unfolded at around 1:45 p.m. Central Time near Gregory Gym, home to the school's women's volleyball team. Carter said an officer responded to an initial report of a stabbing and arrested the suspect. The chief added that three other victims were found approximately a block away. There was no immediate word on the conditions of the injured and authorities did not provide a possible motive for the attack.

Three of the student victims were white and the fourth was Asian, Carter said, without noting which victim was deceased. The suspect is black.

Student Rachel Prichett told the Associated Press she was standing in line at a food truck outside the gym when she saw a man with a large knife approach the person standing behind her.

"The guy was standing next to me," Prichett said. "He grabbed him by the shoulder and shoved the knife in it. I just started running as fast as I could."

Another student, Ray Arredondo, said he was walking to his car when a mass of students near the gym started running.

"They were just screaming, `Run! Get out of here!"' Arredondo said.

Foreign Affairs / US Vice President Lands In South Korea After North’s Failed Launch by reporterslab: 12:00pm On Apr 16, 2017
U.S. Vice President Mike Pence arrived in South Korea on Sunday to begin a 10-day trip to Asia that comes amid turmoil on the Korean Peninsula over North Korea's threats to advance its nuclear and defense capabilities, and just after a failed missile launch by the North.

President Donald Trump's vice president arrived in the region a day after North Korea celebrated the birth anniversary of the country's late founder with a military parade showing off missiles and military hardware.

A North Korean missile exploded during launch Sunday, U.S. and South Korean officials said, a high-profile failure that comes as a powerful U.S. aircraft supercarrier approaches the Korean Peninsula in a show of force.

The vice president was joined by his wife and two adult daughters and was laying a wreath at the Seoul National Cemetery at the start of his trip. He was expected to join U.S. and South Korean troops for Easter Sunday church services and a dinner later in the day.

Trump has suggested the U.S. will take a tougher stance against North Korea, telling reporters last week: "North Korea is a problem. The problem will be taken care of." He has repeatedly said if China, North Korea's dominant trading partner, is unwilling to do more to pressure the North, the U.S. might take the matter into its own hands.

Along with the deployment of the Naval aircraft carrier and other vessels into waters off the Korean Peninsula, thousands of U.S. and South Korean troops, tanks and other weaponry were also deployed last month in their biggest-ever joint military exercises. That led North Korea to issue routine threats of attacks on its rivals if they show signs of aggression. Despite North Korea's provocations, U.S. officials have said that the U.S. doesn't intend to use military force against North Korea in response to either a nuclear test or a missile launch.

After a two-month policy review, officials settled on a policy dubbed "maximum pressure and engagement," U.S. officials said Friday. The administration's immediate emphasis, the officials said, will be on increasing pressure on Pyongyang with the help of Beijing.

The officials weren't authorized to speak publicly on the results of the policy review and requested anonymity.

Pence will be tasked with explaining the policy in meetings with leaders in South Korea and Japan at the start of his trip, which will also include stops in Indonesia and Australia. He will also aim to reassure allies in South Korea and Japan that the U.S. will take appropriate steps to defend them against North Korean aggression.

Pence's first trip to South Korea will carry personal meaning as well. His late father, Edward, served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was awarded the Bronze Star on April 15, 1953 — 64 years to the day of the vice president's departure for South Korea. Pence displays in his office his father's Bronze Star and a photograph of his father receiving the honor.

Foreign Affairs / N. Korean Official: Ready For War If Trump Wants It by reporterslab: 2:40pm On Apr 14, 2017
President Donald Trump's tweets are adding fuel to a "vicious cycle" of tensions on the Korean Peninsula, North Korea's vice foreign minister told The Associated Press in an exclusive interview Friday. The official added that if the U.S. shows any sign of "reckless" military aggression, Pyongyang is ready to launch a pre-emptive strike of its own. Vice Minister Han Song Ryol said Pyongyang has determined the Trump administration is "more vicious and more aggressive" than that of Barack Obama.

He added that North Korea will keep building up its nuclear arsenal in "quality and quantity" and said Pyongyang is ready to go to war if that's what Trump wants. Tensions between Pyongyang and Washington go back to President Harry Truman and the 1950-53 Korean War, which ended in an armistice, not a peace treaty. But the heat has been rising rapidly since Trump took office in January.

This year's joint war games between the U.S. and South Korean militaries are the biggest so far — the USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier has been diverted back to the waters off Korea after heading for Australia, and U.S. satellite imagery suggests the North could conduct another underground nuclear test at any time.

Pyongyang recently tested a ballistic missile and claims it is close to perfecting an intercontinental ballistic missile and nuclear warhead that could attack the U.S. mainland. Many experts believe that at its current pace of testing, North Korea could reach that potentially game-changing milestone within a few years — under Trump's watch as president.

Despite reports that Washington is considering military action if the North goes ahead with another nuclear test, Han did not rule out the possibility of a test in the near future. "That is something that our headquarters decides," he said during the 40-minute interview in Pyongyang, which is now gearing up for a major holiday — and possibly a big military parade — on Saturday. "At a time and at a place where the headquarters deems necessary, it will take place." The North conducted two such tests last year alone. The first was of what it claims to have been a hydrogen bomb and the second was its most powerful ever.

Expectations are high the North may put its newest missiles on display during Saturday's parade. The annual U.S.-South Korea military exercises have consistently infuriated the North, which views them as rehearsals for an invasion. Washington and Seoul deny that, but reports that exercises have included "decapitation strikes" aimed at the North's leadership have fanned Pyongyang's anger. Han said Trump's tweets have also added fuel to the flames.

Trump posted a tweet Tuesday in which he said the North is "looking for trouble" and reiterated his call for more pressure from Beijing, North Korea's economic lifeline, to clamp down on trade and strengthen its enforcement of U.N. sanctions to persuade Pyongyang to denuclearize. Trump has threatened that if Beijing isn't willing to do more to squeeze the North, the U.S. might take the matter into its own hands.

"Trump is always making provocations with his aggressive words," Han said. "It's not the DPRK but the U.S. and Trump that makes trouble." North Korea's official name is the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. Han said the sanctions approach is misguided and cited the opening ceremony of a sprawling new high-rise residential area in Pyongyang on Thursday as evidence that sanctions have failed to ruin the country's economy.

Leader Kim Jong Un presided over the ceremony before about 100,000 residents and a large contingent of foreign journalists who have been allowed in to cover the holiday. Han dismissed the suggestion Trump made last year during his presidential campaign that he was willing to meet Kim Jong Un, possibly over hamburgers. "I think that was nothing more than lip service during the campaign to make himself more popular," Han said. "Now we are comparing Trump's policy toward the DPRK with the former administration's and we have concluded that it's becoming more vicious and more aggressive." Han said North Korea changed its military strategy two years ago, when the reports of "decapitation strike" training began to really get attention, to stress pre-emptive actions. "We've got a powerful nuclear deterrent already in our hands, and we certainly will not keep our arms crossed in the face of a U.S. pre-emptive strike," he said.

"Whatever comes from the U.S., we will cope with it. We are fully prepared to handle it." How much such comments are bluster, or how realistic they are, is hard to gauge. Later Friday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said all sides must stop provoking and threatening and start taking a flexible approach to resuming dialogue.

He said China is willing to support any such effort. "Once a war really happens, the result will be nothing but multiple-loss. No one can become a winner," Wang said. "No matter who it is, if it wants to make war or trouble on the Korean Peninsula, it must take the historical responsibility and pay the due price." South Korea's Foreign Ministry said Han's remarks on the North's readiness to conduct a nuclear test and even go to war reveal the "true colors of North Korea's government that is bellicose and a breaker of regulations."

The ministry issued a statement saying North Korea will face strong punishment it will find hard to withstand if it makes a significant provocation, such as another nuclear test or an ICBM launch.

Military experts generally agree a shooting war with North Korea would likely be far more costly than something along the lines of the recent targeted strike Trump ordered against a Syrian air base believed to be linked to a chemical weapons attack by the regime of Bashir Assad. That attack alarmed the North and was condemned as "unpardonable" by Pyongyang, which counts Syria as an ally.

Even without nuclear weapons, the North could cause severe damage with its conventional artillery batteries aimed at the South Korean capital of Seoul.

Nigeria is doomed.

Only in Nigeria that government will found huge sum of money in someone's home, flat , room and still claim that they don't know who owns the money and the room where the money was found.

Revolution is the only solution for Nigeria since we now have professional criminals as leaders.

Foreign Affairs / Coalition Airstrike In Syria Mistakenly Kills 18 Us-backed Fighters by reporterslab: 11:23pm On Apr 13, 2017
An airstrike on Tuesday by the coalition fighting ISIS south of Tabqah, Syria, killed 18 U.S.-supported fighters, U.S. Central Command announced. The strike killed members of the Syrian Democratic Forces, a local group of fighters that the U.S. and a coalition of 67 other nations and organizations support in the shared goal of defeating ISIS.

A look at the factions battling in Syria’s civil war The US has troops in Syria, and here's what they're doing "The strike was requested by the partnered forces, who had identified the target location as an ISIS fighting position," CENTCOM said in a statement. Instead, the position was occupied by members of the SDF, 18 of whom were killed as a result.

"The coalition's deepest condolences go out to the members of the SDF and their families," the statement continued. "The coalition is in close contact with our SDF partners who have expressed a strong desire to remain focused on the fight against ISIS despite this tragic incident." The statement further said that the coalition is investigating the strike and planning to "implement appropriate safeguards" to avoid further misdirected action.

Coalition airstrikes are a regular tool in the fight against ISIS in Syria and Iraq. Syria's ongoing civil war — a conflict with origins unrelated to ISIS but during which the group has been able to make inroads in the country — has presented complications in combating the group. Last week's U.S. missile strike on a Syrian air base was the first U.S. engagement in Syria unrelated to the fight against ISIS.

Foreign Affairs / Kremlin: No Positive Shift Yet On Russia-us Ties by reporterslab: 4:19pm On Apr 13, 2017
President Vladimir Putin's meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson hasn't produced any positive shift yet in Russia-U.S. relations, the Kremlin said Thursday.

Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the Russian leader on Wednesday gave Tillerson his view of the causes of the current"deadlock" in bilateral ties."We hope that the U.S. president will become aware of that analysis," he said Thursday.President Donald Trump declared Wednesday that U.S.-Russia ties "may be at anall-time low," and Tillerson struck a similar tone after a day of talks in Moscow.

Peskov said in a conference call with reporters that Putin's meeting with Tillersonreflected the "understanding of the need to maintain a dialogue to search for solutions." He added there was no talk Wednesday about a possible Trump-Putinmeeting.

Asked if the meeting at the Kremlin marked any positive change, Peskov said: "Too early yet."Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Trump's administration has found itself under pressure from those who "want to prevent it from curing the wounds inflicted by Barack Obama's administration and are using the Russian card in internal political struggle."Russia's hopes for a thaw in Russia-U.S. ties following Trump's election have been shattered by the congressional investigation into alleged ties between Trump's campaign associates and Russia.

The tense back-and-forth over last week's deadly chemical attack in Syria has added to the strain."It's deplorable, and we regret what is going on, but we can do little except askingto back accusations with facts," Lavrov said. "There hasn't been a single fact, although under the pressure of President Donald Trump's foes the White House has been forced to periodically make statements containing unfounded accusations against us."Still, Lavrov sought to put a positive spin on the talks withTillerson, saying they helped improve mutual understanding."The results will not come quickly," Lavrov said. "But at least we agreed to establish a dialogue on a number of important issues, including problems created by the previous administration."
