Manchester City striker Raheem Sterling has been dropped from England's European Championship qualifier against Montenegro after a physical confrontation with Liverpool's defender Joe Gomez.

According to several reports, Sterling attempted to grab Gomez by the neck following his arrival in the players' canteen at St George's Park on Monday, just a day after the pair clashed during Liverpool's 3-1 win over Manchester City.

Witnesses said they heard him ask the Liverpool defender whether he was “still the big man.”

For Sterling's part in the bust-up, A confirmed in a statement that Sterling is not going to play any part against Montenegro on Thursday. Although, the 24-year-old will remain with the squad.

'The FA can confirm Raheem Sterling will not be considered for Thursday's EURO 2020 qualifier against Montenegro as a result of a disturbance in a private team area at St. George's Park today,' a statement read. 'He will remain with the squad.'

Sterling is understood to have apologised to Gomez and the entire England squad after the altercation.

He also took address the bust-up with Joe Gomez: 'We are in a sport where emotions run high and I am man enough to admit when emotions got the better of me,' he posted. 'Both Joe and I have had words and figured things out and moved on.'

Camp of the Super Eagles is already bubbling as players are getting set for two crucial matches.

As at on Monday evening, captain Ahmed Musa and 13 other players had arrived at the Eagles’ Ibom Meridien Hotel and Resorts, with the remaining nine squad members expected on Tuesday morning.

The 14 who trained on the grounds of the Ibom Meridien Hotel and Resort on Monday evening are Musa, goalkeepers Ikechukwu Ezenwa, Daniel Akpeyi and Maduka Okoye, defenders Kenneth Omeruo, Chidozie Awaziem, Olaoluwa Aina, Jamilu Collins and Oluwasemilogo Ajayi, midfielders Alex Iwobi, Ramon Azeez and Wilfred Ndidi, and forwards Samuel Kalu and Victor Osimhen.

Those arriving on Tuesday morning are defenders William Ekong, Anaemena and Abdullahi Shehu, midfielders Mikel Agu and Joseph Ayodele-Aribo, and forwards Moses Simon, Samuel Chukwueze, Paul Onuachu and Emmanuel Dennis.

Ayodele-Aribo, who plays for Glasgow Rangers in Scotland, has scored in the Eagles’ last two games, against Ukraine (2-2) and Brazil (1-1) – incidentally the only two matches he has played for Nigeria.

The Super Eagles will train at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium on Tuesday evening.

The former Arsenal manager showed off an impressive physique for someone who has just turned 70, suggesting he is still looking after himself despite many thinking he would retire after leaving the Gunners last year.

An armed mugger has been jailed for 10 years after attempting to rob two Arsenal footballers of luxury watches worth £200,000.


Harrow Crown Court heard that Ashley Smith and his accomplice did not count on the bravery of Bosnian defender Sead Kolasinac, in fighting back.

His teammate Mesut Ozil then drove them from the ambush as the would-be robbers pursued them on a stolen moped and threw stones, the court heard.

Smith, 30 - who was described by judge Ian Bourne QC as a prolific "career criminal" who was well known to police - was out on licence for a 42-month sentence for burglary in 2017 when he tried to carry out the street robbery on the Arsenal stars.

He had been released in connection with a burglary offence in January.

Smith, of Archway, north London, had previously pleaded guilty to the attempted robbery just feet from Kolasinac's home in Hampstead, north west London, on July 25.

The judge said Smith, who appeared in court by videolink, had a "leading role" in the "very serious" attempted robbery with Jordan Northover, 26.

The would-be robbers used a stolen moped, were dressed in helmets and dark clothing to try and conceal their identities.

Northover is to be sentenced at a later date which has yet to be set.

Arsenal boss Unai Emery has hinted that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang could be made captain on a permanent basis, if he decides to strip Granit Xhaka of the armband.


Aubameyang stepped in to lead in his absence, and opened the scoring midway through the first half with his 50th goal for the club, before Raul Jimenez's header earned Wolves a point.

The Gabon forward is already part of Emery's five-man leadership group - alongside Xhaka, Mesut Ozil, Alexandre Lacazette and Hector Bellerin – and when asked whether he may be the man to take the job full-time, Emery said: “[He] could do.

“I think he can take that responsibility and today he did that,” Emery added. “He is one of the captains and I think he can take that responsibility, but we are going to analyse the match first and the situation for the next matches and decide.”

The pressure on Emery is mounting as his side dropped points at home once again, making it just one win in their last five games in all competitions.

It was defensive frailty that cost Arsenal once more, as they were caught out by a quick thrown in for Jimenez's leveller, but Emery insisted that it was failure to convert chances at the other end that had been to blame, while also defending his tactical set-up.

“Really, we worked very well today in a different tactical situation,” Emery said. “We didn't concede a big transition with big chances, we went 1-0 up, created chances to score the second but we needed more efficiency in that action.

“We can improve and we must improve that balance defensively but above all, today the key was to have more clear chances to score the second goal and take the result.

“The result is a bad result but tactically, I think we worked like we wanted.”

Arsenal manager Unai Emery says he does not plan to play club captain Granit Xhaka in Saturday's Premier League game against Wolves.


The Arsenal boss said he wanted all the focus to be on the Premier League match following the midfielder's reaction while being jeered by his own fans last weekend.

Rangers of Scotland midfielder Joe Aribo says his wish is to continue his goal scoring run for the senior national team of Nigeria after making it two goals in as many games with his goal against Brazil in the 1-1 draw on Sunday.


Aribo scored on his debut for Nigeria which was the 2-2 draw against Ukraine last month and the midfielder is already looking ahead to scoring again for the Nigerian team when they play in the 2020 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers next month.

Junior Middleweight boxer, Patrick Day, has died after suffering multiple injuries to the brain following the devastating knockout loss to Charles Conwell on Saturday night in Chicago.


Day was knocked out in the 10th round of his welterweight bout with Conwell on Saturday (see video of the Brutal knock out here) and immediately the referee noticed he was unconscious, he called for paramedics who rushed him to North Western memorial hospital in Chicago were he had been in a coma.



He finally passed out on Wednesday night, and his promoter Lou DiBella confirmed the news to pressmen.




‘On behalf of Patrick’s family, team, and those closest to him, we are grateful for the prayers, expressions of support and outpouring of love for Pat that have been so obvious since his injury,’ DiBella said in a statement.



‘Patrick Day didn’t need to box. He came from a good family, he was smart, educated, had good values and had other avenues available to him to earn a living. He chose to box, knowing the inherent risks that every fighter faces when he or she walks into a boxing ring. Boxing is what Pat loved to do'


‘It becomes very difficult to explain away or justify the dangers of boxing at a time like this. This is not a time where edicts or pronouncements are appropriate, or the answers are readily available. ‘It is, however, a time for a call to action."



"While we don’t have the answers, we certainly know many of the questions, have the means to answer them, and have the opportunity to respond responsibly and accordingly and make boxing safer for all who participate. ‘This is a way we can honour the legacy of Pat Day.’

Manchester United may never have a tougher task to beat their biggest rivals.

Liverpool have won every Premier League game they've played this season, are brimming with confidence and comfortably sit top of the table.

United, meanwhile, are going through arguably their leanest spell in decades. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side are without a win in their last five matches and are a lowly 12th in the league.

So, no chance for the hosts at Old Trafford this weekend? Well, maybe not. Form can often fly out of the window in these derbies and Solskjaer will be devising a plan to take down Jurgen Klopp's high-fliers.

Here are nine reasons for United fans to be cheerful and believe their side can win...

1. The Old Trafford factor
Liverpool have won just once at Old Trafford this decade. That was a 3-0 victory over David Moyes' beleaguered United, in a game in which Liverpool were awarded three penalties.

Aside from that, the Anfield club have struggled even against relatively mediocre United sides under Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho. They even failed to win against an injury-ravaged United at Old Trafford last season.

A a rowdy home crowd can create an atmosphere to again make it difficult for Klopp's men, who will be wary of losing their incredible league record this season at Old Trafford of all places.


2. The derby factor
It would be unwise to suggest form shouldn't be considered when analysing or previewing this game. The bookmakers have United at 7/2 to win, which are long odds for a home game, so they obviously believe Liverpool are huge favourites.

But derbies can see emotions run high, composure lost and complacency can play a part. United will have to embrace the chaos of such an occasion and try to capitalise on some nerves in the Liverpool ranks, which are inevitable for such a fixture. Football can be an unpredictable game and that can only benefit the underdogs, United.

3. Mo Salah
There are fears on Merseyside over the extent of the ankle injury Salah suffered in his side's last home game, the narrow and late win over Leicester.

So if the Egyptian plays — which he's expected to — there's a chance that he won't be at his roaring best. Throw in the fact that he's never scored against United in four attempts and Solskjaer's side may have the perfect storm. United will have to keep close tabs on a player of Salah's ability of course, but he could struggle to step up once again.


4. Solid defence
Statistically, United have the best defence in the Premier League this season, based on xG stats in terms of chances conceded. And that defence is likely to get a boost by the return of Aaron Wan-Bissaka at right-back. Victor Lindelof and Luke Shaw could also be in contention to come back from injury, meaning Solskjaer may have his first-choice back line available.

Liverpool have struggled to break down similarly resolute defences in Napoli, Sheffield United and Leicester this season. Scoring goals may be an issue for the visitors.

5. Klopp's record
As well as Liverpool's inability to win at Old Trafford in recent years, there's the matter of their manager's woeful record against United.

Last season's 3-1 win at Anfield was just Klopp's second triumph over United in nine attempts — and the first in the Premier League and he's yet to find a way past the old enemy on away turf. There will be trepidation in the German's camp that United should try to exploit.


6. A game to suit United
So how can United exploit Liverpool's weaknesses? It's fair to say the game may well unfold to suit Solskjaer's preferred approach — on the counter-attack.

Liverpool have the superior ball-players and a dangerous attack, so United will surely cede territory and look to sit in and frustrate the league-leaders.

That will surely give the likes of Marcus Rashford, Daniel James and (if fit) Anthony Martial the chance to break at pace and catch Liverpool unawares at the back. Rashford scored a double in this very fixture in March 2018 and will be boosted by a fine goal and performance for England against Bulgaria.

United's better performances this season have come against better sides: Chelsea, Leicester and Arsenal. If they can replicate those displays, they have a chance.


7. Pogba
Say what you want about Pogba — and many people do — but he's a big-game player and undoubtedly the most talented footballer in United's squad.

Solskjaer will be banking on the Frenchman producing one of his best displays. And when that happens, United tend to win, no matter who the opposition are.

8. Weakness in Liverpool's defence
Liverpool might be eight points clear at the Premier League summit after eight games, but it's fair to say their defence has flattered to deceive at times this term.

Any defence that concedes three goals at home to RB Salzburg is fallible. And if United can get Daniel James running at Trent Alexander-Arnold, they might find the Achilles heel of Klopp's side. The England right-back is excellent going forward, but can be exposed running back to his own goal. So while Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip have been good this season, United could find joy down the flanks.


9. Rustiness in goal
The expected return of Alisson in the Liverpool goal seems like a boost for Klopp's men, but there's every chance the Brazilian's return could actually have a destabilising effect on his teammates.

Adrian has deputised superbly in Alisson's absence this season and Liverpool's back line has been very settled. Alisson is prone to the odd shaky moment and cannot afford that on his return, at Old Trafford.

Spain captain Sergio Ramos took to social media to dedicate La Roja's qualification for the 2020 European Championship to his former national team coach, Luis Enrique.

Nigeria goalkeeper, Daniel Akpeyi, says he excited after helping Kaizer Chiefs win their first trophy of the season in a 4-2 humiliation of rivals Mamelodi Sundowns to lift the Shell Helix Ultra Cup on Saturday at the FNB stadium in Johannesburg.

Akpeyi, who was on for the entire duration of the game, was partly responsible for Sundown’s first goal after parrying Gaston Sirino’s curl into the path of Jose Meza, who needed no second invitation hitting the ball into the net from close range.

But the goalkeeper redeemed himself with a last-ditch palm from Hlompho Kekana’s header to reduce pressure on his team.

The shot-stopper moved to South Africa in 2015, joining Chippa United from Warri Wolves, before making a switch to former South African Premier League champions Chiefs in January 2019.

The League Management Company organisers of the Nigeria Professional Football League have now picked Nov. 3 as a new kick-off date for the 2019/2020 NPFL season.

The new date is being backed by the conduct of the draw for the competition, held late on Monday in Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the draw was supervised by the LMC Chairman, Shehu Dikko, and the company’s Chief Operating Officer, Salihu Abubakar.

According to the LMC, the league will revert to its original format of the 20 clubsides represented in a single NPFL log.

During the course of the season, which will run from November to May, each club will play in a double round-robin system.

They will face each other once at their home stadium and once at that of each of their opponents, for 38 games each.

After a long consultative meeting which began at 6 p.m. and ended at 12 midnight, it was also agreed that the long-awaited season will now kick off on Nov. 3.

It is expected to end on May 30, 2020.

The former Liverpool midfielder faces a five-year prison sentence and a €4million (£3.6million) fine if he is found guilty.

Alonso, who played for Liverpool, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich in a trophy-laden career, has been charged with three counts of tax fraud, which he is accused of committing between 2010 and 2012.

The 37-year-old has insisted he is innocent as his two-day trial starts on Wednesday.

Prosecutors claim Alonso evaded around £2million of tax from image rights.



After the trial was suspended in January, Alonso said: “If I have the conviction and the confidence that I have done things correctly, that I have cooperated from the start and have never hidden anything, I have to defend myself and confide in justice.

“That’s why I’ve come this far and I am going to carry on until the end.

“I would be worried if I thought I had something to hide or I hadn’t done something right. As that’s not the case, I’m carrying on.”

Real Madrid legend and Juventus star Cristiano Ronaldo admitted to tax fraud earlier this year .

The 34-year-old had been accused of committing £12.9million of tax fraud between 2011 and 2014.

Ronaldo agreed to pay a £16.5million fine in return for a 23-month suspended prison sentence.

Cech sustained a head injury in the match against Reading on 14 October 2006 when he collided with Reading midfielder Stephen Hunt.


Chelsea lost Petr Cech after just 20 seconds. Diving to make a save at the feet of Reading's Stephen Hunt, Cech took a blow to the head that fractured his skull. He left the pitch on a stretcher and was replaced by substitute keeper Carlo Cudicini.


Cech underwent surgery for a depressed skull fracture. Initially unaware of the seriousness of the injury, the doctors later reported that it nearly cost Čech his life, and as a result of the collision, he suffered intense headaches.

Chelsea announced that the goalkeeper would be out for three months, In an interview, Čech said that he had no memory of the injury itself.

Petr Cech led the Guildford Phoenix to a shoot-out victory and was named Man of the Match on his ice hockey debut.


The former Chelsea and Arsenal goalkeeper - now a technical adviser with the Blues - saved two efforts in the shoot-out as his side beat Swindon Wildcats' second-string 3-2 at the Guildford Spectrum.

Cech, who played the sport as a youngster in the Czech Republic, joined the fourth-tier ice hockey team earlier in the week.

Cech saved Swindon's first and last efforts in the penalty shootout to secure his side the victory and was named his side's man of the match.

Bournemouth midfielder Philip Billing has revealed that Everton winger Alex Iwobi discussed the possibility of representing Nigeria at international level with him.


Billing is eligible to play for Nigeria through his father.

The 23-year-old is in line to make his international debut for Denmark at senior level in Saturday’s Euro 2020 qualifier against Switzerland, having represented the country of his birth at various youth levels.

Billing admitted that he had been flattered by interest in him.

“It wasn’t until when we (Cherries) were going to play against Everton a couple of weeks ago when Alex Iwobi asked if I might be interested in coming and playing for Nigeria,” Billing told Danish newspaper B.T.

“It’s a pat on the back that another country would like you to play for them. I just take that as a shrug and proof that you are doing well.”

He however stated the chances of turning out for Nigeria had always been slim.

“I am half Nigerian and I feel that way too but I was born and raised in Denmark. My mother is Danish and my sister is Danish, so it would feel strange to have to play for Nigeria.”
