Thomas Vermaelen was announced on Saturday as the fourth former Barcelona player to sign for Japanese side Vissel Kobe.

The 33-year-old joins former Barca players Andres Iniesta, David Villa and Sergi Samper at the club, who are currently 15th in the 18-team J.League.

"When the offer came I was very excited to come to this team," said Vermaelen at his unveiling.


"I think it is a very ambitious team, if you look at the signings that they have done in the past, with Andreas (Iniesta), David Villa, Sergi Samper and Lukas Podolski."

"I know them all very well and for me that is a big part also of why it will be easier to come in to the team."

Kobe are owned by Hiroshi Mikitani, the CEO of Rakuten, Barcelona's main shirt sponsor, and Vermaelen's move is the latest indicator of the growing connection between the two clubs.

Barcelona are due to play Kobe in a pre-season friendly later on Saturday.

"I played the last couple of years in Barcelona and I learnt a lot there," said Vermaelen.

"I think that is what they ask of me, to bring the experience of what I had in Barcelona, to bring that over here, I think that is what the owner wants."

"I will also play out from the back, like I learnt in Barcelona and also play aggressive defensively so I will try and bring the complete package into this team."

Vermaelen, who has 70 caps for Belgium and also played for Arsenal from 2009-2014, had been without a club since leaving Barcelona at the end of the season.

Plagued by injuries and behind the likes of Gerard Pique in the pecking order at the Nou Camp, Vermaelen only made 34 appearances for the Catalan side.

Crystal Palace have completed the permanent signing of Ghana forward Jordan Ayew from Swansea，the fee is thought to be around £2.5m.


Ayew, 27, spent last season on loan at the Eagles and will return to Selhurst Park having agreed a three-year deal with the club.

He leaves Swansea for an undisclosed fee having originally moved to south Wales in 2017. Ayew scored one goal in 20 Premier League games for Palace last season and is looking forward to playing for the club again heading into the new campaign.

'I am very happy, I really enjoyed myself last season,' he told cpfc.co.uk.

'I enjoyed the stadium, the fans, the boys - they were really good to me - everything here was positive and that's why I decided to continue with Crystal Palace.'

UEFA have unveiled their 10-strong shortlist for the goal of the season award for 2018/19, which encompasses both men's and women's football as well as club and international UEFA competitions.

The nominees are thus drawn from the Champions League, the Europa League, the European Championship qualifiers, the European Under-17 Championships and the Women's Champions League.


As revealed on UEFA's official website , where fans can vote for their favourite score, all of Cristiano Ronaldo, Danilo, David Faupala, Enzo Millot, Ismaila Sarr, Ivan Rakitic, Katerina Svitkova, Lionel Messi, Nani and Pedro Rodriquez were nominated.

Manchester United defender, Eric Bailly, was pictured in a wheelchair at Manchester Airport on Friday, as the team arrived back to the UK from a pre-season tour.

Bailly picked up an injury in their 2-1 win over Premier League rivals, Tottenham Hotspur, in Shanghai earlier in the week.

The Ivorian was carried off the field on a stretcher and left the stadium on crutches with a knee brace.

“It seems that he’s twisted his knee so we just have to do some scans and checks on him,” Solskjaer said after the game.

It is yet another setback for Bailly who has, since moving to Old Trafford in 2016, missed 34 games through three separate injuries.

His injury could also alter United’s transfer plans and push them to move for Harry Maguire although, according to SportsMail, a move for the Leicester City man seems to have hit an impasse.

Eden Hazard may be Real Madrid’s new shiny toy but it would seem that some of the heavyweights in the lockerroom are not too enamoured with the Belgian’s presence.

CONMEBOL have handed Lionel Messi a $1500 fine for his inflammatory comments about the federation’s “corruption” during this summer’s Copa America.


Additionally, the Argentina star will serve a one-game suspension for the red card he received against Chile in the competition’s third-place match.

The 20 teams to compete in the 2019-20 Nigeria Professional Football League have been decided, following Monday’s playoffs


Warri Wolves have returned to the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) three seasons after their demotion from the top-flight.

Along with Akwa Starlets, Jigawa Golden Stars and Adamawa United, Wolves secured a berth at the end of the NNL playoffs in four centres on Monday.

The Seasiders took the NPFL by the storm in the 2015 season and were very close to winning the league title until they were pipped to it by Enyimba.

They gave a good account of themselves in the Caf Champions League the following year but was relegated at the end of the season following financial difficulties.

It was during the first stint with Moses Etu as chairman when the Seasiders were relegated and having returned to the same position in January this year, he masterminded their return to the top-flight.

Monday's game in Enugu against Dynamite Force was goalless at the end of the regulation time, but the Kester Ojo Osagie-led Wolves side edged their neighbours 5-3 on penalty kicks.

In Jos, NAF FC of Abuja were beaten 3-2 by Jigawa Golden Stars, while Adamawa United and Akwa Starlets picked the remaining two tickets at the expense of Road Safety and 3SC, in Makurdi and Asaba, respectively.

With this eventuality, the 20 teams to compete in the NPFL are now complete, while the season-ending Super Four to determine the actual winner of the lower league will take place from July 31 to August 3, at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba.

With the last few days dominated by Zinedine Zidane's comments regarding the future of Gareth Bale, the Real Madrid coach has clarified the situation and insisted he never disrespected anyone.


Los Blancos were beaten 3-1 by Bayern Munich on Saturday and Bale spent the entirety of the match in the stands, not even making it to the Madrid bench, with Zidane then claiming after the game it would be better if the Welshman left the club.

"It's true that sometimes my Spanish causes mischief, but I want to be clear," Zidane said.

"First, I have not disrespected anyone, especially a player of ours. I always say the same thing. The players are most important and I will always be with my players.

"Second, I said the club were trying to sell the player, nothing more.

"Thirdly, the other day Gareth didn't play because he didn't want to. He said the club was trying to negotiate his departure he and didn't want to play because of that.

"Now let's go back to the start. He is a Real Madrid player, nothing has changed.

"He will train normally, and tomorrow is tomorrow so we will see what happens.


"You know the situation and you know what is happening with the club. Gareth is a player in the Real Madrid team.

"That's the most important thing. I'm not at all uncomfortable working with Bale. I will count on him once more."

The player who came out of Saturday's defeat with his head held his was Takefusa Kubo, whose impact had taken Madrid by storm.

"He [Kubo] knows where he is," Zidane said. "He isn't afraid to play. He likes to play football.

Rodrygo was another who received plenty of plaudits post Bayern.

"His position is on the right wing," Zidane went on. "But let's see.

"The most important thing is to work, and he is doing very well.

Brazil international, Willian has been given a new jersey number at Chelsea.

Willian will now wear the No.10 shirt for Frank Lampard’s side for the 2019-20 season.

Herve Renard steps down as coach of Morocco
Herve Renard is stepping down as Morocco head coach after their early exit from the Africa Cup of Nations.

Morocco were one of the pre-tournament favourites for Egypt 2019 but suffered a shock penalty shootout defeat by Benin in the last 16. Renard, who won AFCON with Zambia (2012) and Ivory Coast (2015), had been in charge since February 2016.

In a statement on social media, Renard, 50, said 'It is time for me to close this long and beautiful chapter of my life, not without some emotion and sadness. It is an inevitable decision taken well before Afcon 2019. I took this decision after having - of course - carefully considered [it]. It is therefore irreversible."

Renard took Morocco from 81st in the Fifa world rankings to 47th. He led them to two Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, and to the World Cup in Russia in 2018 the first time the Atlas Lions had played at the global event for 20 years.

His hopes of winning a third Afcon title were dashed in Egypt, and Renard admitted it was not the outcome he had expected. "We had all hoped [for] better for the Afcon 2019 in Egypt. Barcelona finally confirmed the capture of Antoine Griezmann on Friday afternoon and paying €120 million for the Frenchman has taken their transfer spending over €1 billion for the past five years.


The deal represents the joint most Barca have ever paid for a transfer outright, levelling things up with Philippe Coutinho and also means they've spend over €1 billion in transfers in the last five years, more than anyone else, according to Voetbal International.

Zinedine Zidane has left Real Madrid's training camp in Montreal to return to Spain due to personal reasons.


Real Madrid head coach Zinedine Zidane has left the club's pre-season tour of North America due to a family matter, Los Blancos have announced in a statement on their official website

"Our coach, Zinedine Zidane, is to leave the club's pre-season base in Montreal for personal reasons," Madrid said in a statement on their official website. "Until he returns, the team's training sessions will be overseen by his assistant coach, David Bettoni."

Peter Crouch has announced that he is retiring from football.

The 38-year-old played a total of 468 Premier League matches for Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa, Southampton, Liverpool, Portsmouth, Stoke City and most recently, Burnley.

The striker scored 108 goals in the top flight, of which a Premier League record 53 were scored with his head, while he also provided 58 assists.

"After a lot of deliberation this summer I have decided to retire from football," he announced in a statement on Twitter. "Our wonderful game has given me everything.

"I'm so thankful to everyone who helped me get there and to help me stay there for so long."

Crouch is one of only 28 players to have recorded 100 or more Premier League goals.

He become the oldest player to reach the milestone, at the age of 36 years and two days, when scoring for Stoke against Everton in February 2017.

Crouch's tally of 468 appearances puts him 20th on the PL's all-time list.

The youngsters have now had their Nintendo Switch console confiscated "indefinitely" after £550 was spent on player packs in just three weeks.

Fifa users can purchase packs on the game to improve their team, but will only see what they have won once the payment is made.

After their father treated to them one player pack, the four children decided to splash the cash on his bank card without asking.

Thomas Carter and his wife only realised what had happened when their card was declined because the account was empty.

Mr Carter, from Hampshire, told the BBC: "I just never thought [the children] would do it."


Nintendo have now agreed to give him a full refund and have removed all of the purchased players.

The disgruntled dad has suggested that Fifa's unethical method of buying packs encourages users to gamble.

He added: "You pay £40 for the game, which is a lot of money in itself, but then the only way to get a great team is essentially by gambling.

"They spent £550 and they still never got their favourite player, Lionel Messi."
