At about 1:30 pm today, I walked into the student center at UIC to get me a snack, and I came upon a placard announcing a meeting in Cardinal room, organized by a 100 Igbos USA, INC and Umu Igbo Alliance entitled "Amandigbo". I was sure the words seemed Ibo so I went downstairs to the information desk and was told it was an african meeting. Being the curious person I am, I decided to check it out.

As I approached I saw a lady speaking at the podium, so I stood outside the door rather than walk in to get a good look at what was going on inside.
From the brochure, I learnt that the gathering was an Ibo gathering and the theme was cultural. However,flipping through the pages, I realized that more than 50% of it was filled with pictures of people/families who I have never heard of, and probably never seen too(no stories of them included--seemed more like some show off magazine lol ), and on the last two pages, the name of a bunch of medical practisioners who, again, I have never heard of before. Got me wondering what of culture they were all gathered to talk about, here in the United States. I admit I have not spent much time researching the organizations in question but if any of you have, please feel free to inform us on what it is exactly they each stand for.

We tend to talk a lot about culture in Nigeria, in a seemingly abstract manner by the way. And it seems individuals have their own idea of what culture is and what it applies to. My question is, apart from attires and dances, is culture still alive in Nigeria? If yes, in what form does it exist? What is culture to you?

Jonathan Forwards Petroleum Industry Bill To NASS, Says Petroleum Minister

President Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday forwarded the new Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) to the National Assembly for passage into law.

The Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs Diezani Allison-Madueke, disclosed this while briefing State House Correspondents on the outcome of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the meeting held at the Council Chamber of the Presidential Villa, was presided over by the president with Vice-President Namadi Sambo and many ministers in attendance.

``I am pleased to announce that, this morning, the Petroleum Industry Bill 2012 was forwarded by Mr President to the National Assembly.

``We have after quite indepth review, consolidated a major scope of input into what is now the Petroleum Industry Bill.

``We had taken into consideration what was done and put before the sixth Assembly.

``But we have had to review it in great detail and rework the bill to reflect as much as possible, the entire spectrum of what we considered will be the substantial strategic framework for the petroleum industry and the amalgamation of over sixteen laws in the oil and gas sector, that will carry this nation in that sector for the years to come.

``This is therefore the definitive Petroleum Industry Bill and we expect that it will receive due consideration in the National Assembly.’’

The minister reiterated that there was no other PIB 2012, besides the one forwarded by the President to the National Assembly.

She said that the various adaptations that were seen in the social and online media did not come from the Federal Government.

``There is only one Petroleum Industry Bill 2012, which has been released today for the first time to the National Assembly, and will therefore be available on the Ministry of Petroleum Resources’ Website by this evening for down loading.

``You will notice that inside the Bill there are water marks, including a signing across the bill on each page that says `the Petroleum Industry Bill 2012’, and the Coat of Arms of the nation.

``This is the only Petroleum Industry Bill that we have produced. Therefore, all other versions or adaptations are not valid and have never been. I would like all Nigerians to please take note.’’

I'm all about equal opportunity, but I don't believe men and women are equal. Heck, I don't even believe all men are equals, and same goes for women. However, people should be given equal opportunity to achieve their goal in life regardless of gender.

As for romance and dating, I feel way more comfortable being in a relationship where clear-cut gender roles are not advocated. I have zero interest in leading anyone.

I am not aware of any school that offers a Postgraduate diploma in the states, but I do recall Texas Tech University having a Graduate certificate in Petroleum Engineering. http://www.depts.ttu.edu/pe/students/grad/curriculum.php However, I highly doubt any school would grant admission to an international student intending on pursuing a Graduate Certificate as opposed to a Masters or Phd.

2sexy: If someone schools in Canada, what is the possibility of getting a job in US VS he schooling in the US?

Honestly speaking, it would be almost impossible for you to school in Canada as an international and get a job in the US once you graduate. Perhaps if you attended the Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador, you might have a chance because they have an offshore Oil and Gas program over there. I know a couple of American Offshore Oil & Gas companies that recruit at that school.

Nevertheless, your better bet will always be TAMU or UT Austin. All other Petroleum Schools in the States come in at a distant third. http://sec.tamu.edu/Students/CareerFair/Search.aspx This link is a pretty good idea of the amount of Oil & Gas companies that actually attend their Career fair to recruit students. Another relatively good school in the states that I haven't seen a mention of is the University of Tulsa.

In addition, producing companies aren't the only option you have. There are loads of Vendor, EPC, and Servicing Companies I would advise anyone to consider. Exercise some flexibility and familiarize yourself with many of the companies in the Oil and Gas Industry. Rigzone.com and the Offshore Technology Conference are pretty good references.

My hope is to get picked by a Multinational, preferably Total and be transferred to lagos. God knows that will be the happiest day in my life. lol

Keep in mind that Total does not operate any field in the United States or Gulf of Mexico, so if you would like to work for Total before moving back to Nigeria, then your better bet would be somewhere in Europe or Canada. A couple of months ago, I read somewhere that Total would have doubled or tripled their employee count in Canada by 2016.

The employees needed to run the new companies have already been absorbed. My comment was in reference to the redundancies.
