Like anyone cares.

Look, I've seen what working for the likes of Exxon can do to your chances of getting whatever god-damn job you want in the future.

Hi professionals, i'm a graduate of Mechanical Engineering with a strong ambition to working for oil and gas coy's. But all my effort towards my dream job, seems,so challenging to meet up with, coz i graduated with second class lower division and the said industry don't even think about giving graduates of my grade a chance at all, expect u av Masters degree to buttress ur 1st degree; which i dont av for now. But to meet up with this future dream of mine,i'm under a international certification welding programme sponsored by F.G in patnership with PTDF and NIW i.e:Nigeria Institute of Welding. This programme is to help train nigerians in pipe welding job which is applicable in the industry. The first phase of the programe is gone and we've been on break for the past 3months,hoping to be summoned for the 2nd out of the 3-phase programme.
Also, due to the long vacation,I thought of getting myself busy,so,I decided to scout for a temporary job. And luckly i got a structural engineering job with an engineering firm around my area, but, no pay for now. At least i'm gainning some field and design experience. But the dilemma issue i'm facing now is that i don't want to lose this present job opportunity of mine due to the present job situation in the country, even thou they are not paying me now, likewise,i want to av that certificate. My questions...

How relevant and useful are pipe welders in oil and gas industry?

Can I combine my basic Mech. Engineering knowledge(even thou i don't av any work experince in that field)with this structural thing?

Also,if i add this welder's certificate with my 1st degree in Mech. Engr, do i av a chance of getting employed with oil and gas coy's? Thanks
Re: Total Oil And Gas Workers by debosky(m): 12:37pm On Sep 12, 2012
^^ Welders are very important, particularly in the fabrication/construction aspects of oil and gas developments.

When you want to build structures like platforms and structural supports, you need welders to weld them together. Same for welding pipes and the like during installation. They will 'always' be needed, but of course the need is dependent on the level of activity in the industry - whether there are multiple projects underway and the like.

However, oil and gas companies (producers/operators) often do not employ welders as the welding is carried out by contractors such as Samsung Heavy Industries, Nigerdock and companies that run fabrication yards.

I don't think having a welder's certificate will be of much help in trying to get a job as a mechanical engineer, although welding knowledge is useful.

Don't get too hung up on 'practicing' what you studied - if you enjoy what you are doing in structural engineering, then that is a path you should pursue.

Don't spend your entire life waiting for an o&g job that may never come - if it comes then fine, if not, pursue other opportunities to the best of your ability.

This forum is completely loaded,
I wrote TOTAL recruitment test for the Reservoir Geologist Position and it was interesting. Please how long does it take them to close out their recruitment? What is the time gap they usually give their candidates to seek for permission for their interview and Presentation.
Thank you for a prompt response.

This forun is absolutely loaded. Personally I have gained a lot of insight into the big picture..."OIL AND GAS INDUSTRY". A million thanks to all who have made valuble contributions on this thread. I wrote the professional test organized by TOTAL for the position of Reservoir Engineering on the 6th of September. I am optimistic I would be invited for the next stage which is the STRUCTURAL INTERVIEW. Please, can anyone give me an insight of what I m likely going to encounter at this stage? What do I expect for the PHYSOCOLOGY INTERVIEW, LINE INTERVIEW and also HUMAN RESOURCES INTERVIEW. Your contribution would be highly appreciated.

Hmmm..........not sure my interview would work for you as I was an experienced hire having worked for Exxon for some years.Nevertheless, here it goes:

The first one was soft skills based - the usual drill like communication skills, working in teams, handling conflict and divergent views etc. I explained what each competency meant to me and gave practical/specific examples for each question.

The second was a technical one which was quite in-depth in my opinion, they went as far as asking me to describe how I'd model a well in Prosper from scratch.

I hope this helps, happy to help if you have more questions.

Mehn, d interest in this thread is smthn else! Great stuff.
@hobatcash...its possibl u were called in error. Either that or u are on d border of their cutoff line and they got somebody who pushed u below d line. D person who called is most likely an intern or nysc.
@detrick007...your chances are very slim with a 2-2. And if u don't have any experience to back this 2-2 thn your chances are next to nothing.
@mobiss...I think its better u go and get your certificate and stay with this non paying job. Remeber in nigeria, experience counts only when its backed by d 'paper'. Debosky is totally right, don't get hung up and don't spend your life waiting. From my experience a 2-2 BSc + welding certificate means you're overqualified to be taken as a welder (OND is d norm) and also underqualified to be taken as an engineer (u know d drill) esp with no experience. U shld pursue other things, get some good experience and try again in 10yrs if u must.
@naijababe...great info!

Common, Total's aptitude test is one of the easiest of the majors. Shell and Chevron used to be the killer back in mid 2000 but dont know if its still thesame. The Technical test is a different thing all together.

Not that it was really that hard, but i was not prepared for it. I got the mail around 2pm yesterday that i had an aptitude test with Total the following day, which is today. And i was at Uyo then, so i had to hurriedly pack my things and head for Port Harcourt and i arrived there at about 11pm. So i didnt have time to prepare at all. It is well sha.

You will likely be eligible for a job as an environmental advisor/environmental engineer with an O&G company. I am not certain that O&G companies in Nigeria recruit for such positions at the graduate level, but that would be my first port of call - check that out and move on.

Secondly, such qualifications are often suitable for environmental/HSE consultancies/regulatory bodies (DPR for example) - your skills can be applied to tasks such as environmental impact assessments/studies, environmental monitoring/audits and the like. There may be opportunities in smaller consultancies to gain good experience. I don't have any specific knowledge of opportunities in this area but others might.

One thing you can do to develop yourself in this field is to gain some exposure to ISO 14001 environmental management systems - this will provide you with a good overview of environmental advisors/specialists deal with. I believe there are companies in Nigeria offering training in this area and you may wish to pursue this.

Wish you all the best.

Thank u, I made a mistake in the area of specialisation its offshore environmental engineering the philosophy of this
programme is to combine courses in
offshore oil and gas exploration, production
technologies and environmental
management. The programme is suited for
students that are interested in practical
technological and administrative
competences for sound environmental
management in the offshore industries. I awaot ur reply thanks
