Nigerian oil tycoon, Mrs. Folorunsho Alakija, is now the richest black woman in the world with an estimated fortune of $7.3 billion. Mother of four, Alakija, 62, unseats Winfrey as the richest black woman in the world. According to Forbes, Oprah Winfrey is worth $2.9 billion. Africa boasts 55 billionaires and they’re worth a staggering $143.88 billion in total, according to pan-African magazine Ventures Africa. Alakija started her career as a secretary in a bank in the mid 1970s. She then studied fashion in London and returned to Nigeria to start a label, Supreme Stitches. But her biggest break came in oil. In 1993, her company, Famfa Oil, was awarded an oil prospecting licence, which later became OML 127, one of Nigeria’s most prolific oil blocks. The company owns a 60-per-cent stake in the block, valued at around $7.3 billion, Ventures Africa has reported. As the Oguntuase family in Akure, Ondo State, continues to mourn the gruesome death of foremost Pediatrician, Dr. David Oguntuase, his wife, Ifeyinwa, has cried out to security agencies to help find his killers. Dr. Oguntuase who would have been 54 in January, died in his private clinic on Christmas Eve in a mysterious fire incident suspected by his family to be the handiwork of assassins. Ifeyinwa, a social worker also at the Federal Medical Centre, Owo, told our correspondent that she received his last phone call at about 6.42pm on that Wednesday, instructing her on the need to shop for some basic provisions before dark because of the holiday season. She said her husband left home in the evening without his car which was under repair at a mechanic workshop, and did not return home before the family went to bed. According to her, because of the nature of his job as a medical doctor, he often kept late nights and sometimes didn’t return home if he had a case at the hospital. She, however, noted that he usually called to notify her whenever he planned to come home late. She noted that her husband was earlier robbed of his phones and other valuables the previous Saturday in the same area where his clinic was located. Ifeyinwa recounted the travails of her husband at the FMC as he was earlier interrogated by the police on trumped up allegations of plotting with others to assassinate the Chief Medical Director. Flanked by her three children, Ifedayo, 18; Temitope, 14 and Oluwatoyin, 11, at their home at Ijapo Estate, she asserted that her husband of 20 years did not die in a fire accident. “For all I know, my husband was gruesomely murdered and I want justice for him,” she said. She, however, could not explain why her husband was alone at the hospital at the time of the incident, a question which had been on the lips of many residents in the area. “My husband was not a careless person; he was very meticulous and knew how to put things in their place. He was not lazy. “He was simple and forthright. He used his clinic for charity. The clinic did not bring money home; he used his salary to pay his workers. He was kind- hearted and selfless,” she said. Asked if she believed the police could find the killers, she said, “I know they (police) can do something if they want to. They should find the killers at least to prove my confidence in them.”http://www.punchng.com/metro-plus/my-husband-was-assassinated-i-want-justice/ |

The family of Dr. Akintayo Oguntuase, Head of Pediatrics at the Federal Medical Centre, Owo, Ondo State, who was found dead in his clinic in Akure, after it was razed by a mysterious fire in the eve of Christmas, has said the medical practitioner was murdered in cold blood. Universal Medical Clinic was in flames in the midnight of December 24, when residents of Araromi area of the city were in a festive mood and by the time the billows of fire and smoke faded out in the morning of December 25, the proprietor, Oguntuase, was found burnt and mutilated. While the police in Ondo are still busy examining the different theories and leads to unraveling the cause of the fire, the deceased’s family has concluded that the medical practitioner was killed by assassins and burnt to give a semblance of a fire accident. Otunba Ben Oguntuase, the elder brother of deceased, in a statement made available to our correspondent on Friday, said, “Dr. David Akintayo Oguntuase, a Consultant Pediatrician and Head of Pediatrics at the Federal Medical Centre, Owo, was brutally murdered by assassins/arsonists, leaving behind a most gory sight.” He said a thorough examination of the remains of the hospital and the site of the incident revealed trails left behind by the murderers and how they accomplished the dastardly act. “Evidently, they shot him in the main clinic area and carried his body to the room in the back area where the left him face down. Not done, they severed his hands and legs before proceeding to douse the body with petrol. “The rest of the building on the inside was sprinkled with petrol before it was all set ablaze. It obviously was an inferno that raged leading the building to implode as the roof caved inward,” the senior Oguntuase stated. He noted that the fire did not affect other buildings around, suggesting that it was professionally plotted and executed. Explaining the premises on which his theory was based, Ben Oguntuase said the walls of the clinic were stained with blood, showing that the slain medical practitioner was attacked and dragged to the place where he was eventually burnt. The Police Public Relations Officer in Ondo State, Mr. Wole Ogodo, said although the command had yet to get a full briefing on the development, the family would be required to come up with the leads and substantial evidence supporting their position.http://www.punchng.com/news/assassins-burnt-doctor-who-died-in-inferno-family/ |

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) on Tuesday approved a review of the Multi Year Tariff Order (MYTO) 2 regime with an implication for takeoff date for a disciplined electricity market by January 1, 2015. With the commencement of MYTO 2.1, the commission will now progressively hold electricity distribution, transmission and generation companies as well as other market operators to the terms and conditions of their licences. The commission’s chairman Dr Sam Amadi, said, “It is expected that the take-off of MYTO 2.1 will bring about improved service delivery as distribution companies are now expected to implement their investment plans for metering and strengthen their networks in line with their bid documents.” He explained that the adjustment in methodology is not expected to bring about any increase in tariff to the residential customers on R1 and R2, who formed majority of electricity consumers, at least not in the next six months. Explaining the rationale behind the adjustment, Amadi said that the commission had shielded ordinary Nigerians from possibility of rates shock that could have accompanied the review while pressing the operators for improved service delivery and to abide by the agreement they signed into while acquiring the electricity entities. He explained further that the review was imperative on account of possible the take off date of January 1, 2015, for the transition electricity market and the memorandum of understanding between the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI). According to him, all these measures were being put in place to ensure the new owners can fund their operations and ensure improved electricity supply to the economy as well as expand the amount of electricity available for economic development. With this development the existing regime of Interim Rules, whereby the Commission govern the market without the full rigours of the MYTO, as situation arises will cease, while activities of the market will now be governed by strict contractual obligationshttp://leadership.ng/news/397585/nerc-new-electricity-tariff-takes-effect-january-1 |

PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan on Friday received the report of the Presidential Committee of Experts on Inter-Professional Relationship in the Public Health Sector, vowing to act on its recommendations to end “unhealthy rivalries” among healthcare professionals. Receiving the report from the chairman of the committee and former Head of Service, Alhaji Mahmud Yayale Ahmed, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Jonathan said that the Federal Government would review the report immediately with a view to issuing a white paper on it and begin the implementation of its accepted recommendations early next year. “I had to set up the committee because I am very sad, and I know most Nigerians feel very sad that strikes and unhealthy rivalries among professionals in the health sector have adversely affected medical services,” the president said. Jonathan added that he was optimistic that the implementation of the committee’s accepted recommendations would help to end unhealthy rivalries and incessant strikes in the public health sector, which, he said, had created an atmosphere of uncertainty in the sector. He added that this had left many people with fewer options for quality medical services. Earlier, Yayale Ahmed told the president that the committee identified 50 areas of conflict after receiving memoranda and interacting with about 40 professional bodies in the public health sector and members of the public. He said that the areas of conflict were categorised into organisational, management, leadership and team work, remuneration and motivation, career management, capacity building, professional practice, labour, legal and governance issues.http://tribune.com.ng/news/news-headlines/item/24667-health-sector-makes-me-sad-jonathan |
