The Nigeria Governors’ Forum on Tuesday
demanded explanations from the Minister of
Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy,
Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, on $20 billion being
accruals for the Excess Crude Account for two
years.This was part of a communique issued at the
end of a four-hour meeting which ended in the
early hours of Tuesday at the Transcorp Hilton
Hotel, Abuja.The communique was read by the
Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, who
announced that the NGF has reconciled and
reunited as a single association of the 36 state
Governors of Nigeria regardless of region.He said
the forum was demanding explanations on how
accrued and how it was disbursed.Amaechi said,
“In the light of the fact that funds in the Excess
Crude Account were last disbursed in May 2013,
there is need for the Minister of Finance and
Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Dr. Ngozi
Okonjo-Iweala, to provide explanations for
accruals to this account from June 2013 to April
2015 which is estimated at over $20 billion.”The
communique also read in part: “The induction
Programme for new and returning governors will
be held in June 2015.“It is also aimed at equipping
new and returning governors with the knowledge of
global best practices in establishing and running
their offices.”The governors also resolved to
establish a Governors’ Forum Academy to be
christened “The NGF Leadership Academy,” which
will be responsible for capacity building of
Governors and other officials holding public
offices.The forum congratulated the President
elect, Mohammad’s Buhari, over his electoral
victory and also congratulated President Goodluck
Jonathan for conceding defeat.Amaechi, whose
tenure has expired, unveiled Governor Abdulaziz
Yari of Zamfara State, as his successor. Yari
emerged as Chairman by concensus. He is to
serve for a one-year period: May 2015 to May
2016.

The Minister of State for
Education, Viola Onwuliri, has said
no sensitive document was burnt
and offices in the building were
not affected by Thursday’s fire
incident at the Federal Secretariat.
She explained that the fire only
affected the electrical cable
channels.
“The offices and documents are
intact,” Mrs. Onwuliri said. “The
fire service chief has assured that
everybody is safe.”
The fire started at about 1.40pm
and affected the 3rd to 6th floor of
phase three of the secretariat. The
building housed the Federal
Ministry of Education.
At the time of the incident, the
Minister of Education, Ibrahim
Shekarau, was having an
interactive section with lrincipals
of unity schools from across the
country.
The meeting was stopped as the
minister and other officials were
evacuated from the building.
Cause of fire unknown
Five hours after the fire was put
out, the Operational Commander
for the Federal Fire service, Ime
Eyo, told PREMIUM TIMES that
investigations are still on going as
to what led to the fire.
“By tomorrow, I will be able to tell
you what caused the fire
outburst,” Mr. Eyo said. “As at
now investigations are still on-
going.”
The fire service arrived the scene
shortly after the fire started.
A cleaner who witnessed the
explosion, said he was trying to
relax when he heard a loud bang.
“I heard a loud sound and the light
went off,” he said. “Just before I
could check what went wrong, the
whole place went dark. I was
gasping for breath. I tried to put
on my torch to see but it was so
dark.”
He explained he had to use his
discretion to find his way through
the smoke and out of the building.
Mrs, Onwuliri asked the staff of the ministry
not to panic. She said there was an assurance
everything would be fine.

Amaechi in a bid to look like a repentant criminal, spent his first three and a half years as governor, impressively executing capital projects all over rivers state. After his first tenure elapsed, he was reelected as governor due to the positive image he had garnered from the public. His second tenure ensued, and he spent all of his second tenure in fighting the president. No important capital project was commissioned in all his four years as a second term governor of rivers state. This same amaechi has now become an icon to unsuspecting opposition politicians and their supporters. The chicken will finally come home to roost. We are watching
