The Archbishop of the Diocese of Niger Delta North, Most Rev. Ignatius Kattey, has called on the outgoing Governor of Rivers State, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, and the Governor-elect, Mr. Nyesom Wike, to reconcile their differences. Kattey made this call on Sunday during his sermon at a thanksgiving service to mark the beginning of the inauguration programme of the Governor-elect and his Deputy, Dr. Ipalibo Banigo, at Saint Paul’s Anglican Church, Port Harcourt. Decrying the partisan position taken by some traditional rulers and cleric during the general elections, Kattey urged Amaechi and Wike to begin to see each other as brothers. “Pastors, men of God and traditional rulers should be non-partisan. They should not take side in politics. Amaechi and Wike are all Rivers people,” Kattey stressed, urging Wike not to abandon God. Explaining that the governor-elect should be mindful of the fact that he remained the governor of the state and not that of religion or political party, the cleric expressed the need for Wike to appreciate God’s faithfulness. The cleric, whose theme of sermon was ‘Praise God’, said Wike’s emergence as the governor- elect was an indication that it was not the will of God that he (Wike) should lose the governorship poll. The archbishop stated that while Amaechi remained grateful to God for saving him from the PDP, Wike should also praise God for giving PDP victory during the governorship election in the state. katey added, “You are governor to all churches; you are governor to all political parties in the state. You are governor to all, irrespective of political or religious affiliation. “If God did not want you to be governor of the state, you can’t be. Therefore, hold on to God. I am appealing to you not to abandon God if you must succeed. They must come with all sorts of charm, but hold strong to God. “Don’t be overconfident and don’t take things for granted. Don’t push God aside; depend on God. But if you hold on strongly to God, you will succeed. All of us have taken you by your words. Be firm. If you say you are not a secret cult member, stand firm.” Wike restated his readiness to rebuild Rivers State, where things would function without hitch immediately he assumes office. The governor-elect, who spoke through the Chairman of Transition Committee and former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Austin Opara, stated that the journey to the Government House in Port Harcourt began in 2013. |

Football lovers in Nigeria have requested Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, to buy into one of the local league clubs in order to help the growth of soccer in the country. According to some of them, all that some of the clubs need are massive injection of funds to help them to grow like some in the developed leagues such as the English league. Some of the fans made the plea against the backdrop of Mr. Dangote’s latest interest in buying into Arsenal FC of London. Mr. Dangote was said to have, in 2010, made a futile attempt to buy Lady Nina Bracewell- Smith’s 15.9 per cent stake in the London club. Recently too, he was reported to have made another bid that had also been turned down. Undaunted, he was said to have even vowed to make another offer they might not turn down. However, fans said they were mindful that he had the resources to do so, going by reports in the American Forbes Magazine that put his fortunes at around $3.3 billion (about 2.18 billion pounds). Even though many acknowledged his bid for Arsenal take over are legitimate as a businessman out to invest for profit but insist that corporate social responsibility demanded he should also invest in Nigeria, where he made the bulk of his fortunes. Arsenal was founded in 1886 (129 years ago) and currently valued at 1.3 billion pounds as at May 2015. An American, Stan Kroenke is the largest shareholder with 41, 574 shares (66.82 per cent) in the club. A former Green Eagles Coach, Adegboye Onigbinde, said, “For him not to think of our league shows that something is terribly wrong. “We do not have a structure. In fact going by FIFA regulations, none of our clubs has met the required standards of a club that a person like Dangote could have owned.” He, however, said the proposal by the businessman was a business decision. “We should not be emotional on that ground,” Mr. Onigbinde said. “It is only when you bring in patriotism that it looks morally wrong, but first and foremost, he is a businessman. And so is only normal for him to spread his tentacles wisely. “Business and sentiments do not mix. If I may advise, I think what we need more in this country is someone to back the overhauling of our grassroots programmes. If Dangote decides to focus on sports development, the youth of this country will not forget him because sports in general are what has brought fame to some ghetto children.” Amos Adamu, a former Director-General, National Sports Commission, said the attitude of Nigerians do not encourage investors to finance local clubs. “It is practical, there are people in Nigeria that have never been to the stadium to watch the Nigerian league matches but as businessmen will naturally align with success,” he said. “These same people will do anything within their means to ensure that they watch international leagues like the Barclays Premier League and co; they are die-hard supporters of teams like Arsenal. We are looking at it as football, but it is business for him, but people investing in football are doing it to make more money. “He has interest and he can make more money from it so why not, it is purely business no strings attached. There are certain things you like in life that makes you happy.” Felix Owolabi, a former Eagles player, said the businessman’s intension was based on making more returns on his investment because of how lucrative football had become. “To start with he is a business tycoon that wants to expand his frontiers,” he said. “So, I personally have no problems with that, there is no point bringing elements of morality into this.” Ajibola Lagbaja, a soccer enthusiast based in Akure said that after Mr. Dangote had been able to put the Nigerian league in world map, then he could invest in Arsenal. “I can’t blame him, he is a businessman and he will ensure that Arsenal gets the best players in the world,” Mr. Lagbaja said. “But before he expends on a foreign club, he should start by helping to develop our league in the country.” Mayowa Ademoyegun, Personal Assistant to the Chairman, Ondo State Football Agency said it would be a good one for Arsenal if Dangote could invest in it. “Purchase of Arsenal club by Dangote is a good one for me as a fan of the club. It will be a welcome development,” he said. Tosin Adeyemi, another Akure-based enthusiast said Dangote should collaborate with the authorities running the Glo Premier League to improve it. Mr. Adeyemi noted that although the profit might not come immediately as expected, but that it would be a long term project. Since inception of Arsenal FC, it has won 13 first Division Cups and 11 FA cups, and reached the finals of UEFA Cup in 2000. It was also the first London team to appear in a UEFA Champions League final, in 2006. (NAN) |

Xetima:actually APC isn't. crying, they are only. creating awareness of what they have to handle for a better Nigeria. God help us |
MAY 24, 2015 : OUR CORRESPONDENT Leave a Comment Mr. Lai Mohammed | credits: File copy The All Progressives Congress has said President Goodluck Jonathan is handing over a nation in deep crisis, even as his administration continues to contrive more crises without making any effort to solve any of them. In a statement in Abuja on Sunday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party however appealed to Nigerians not to lose hope, despite the daunting challenges they were currently facing in “this atmosphere of contrived chaos”, saying help was on the way. APC said, ”In a few days’ time, President Jonathan will hand over to President-elect Muhammadu Buhari. Never in the history of our country has any government handed over to another a more distressed country: No electricity, no fuel, workers are on strike, billions are owed to state and federal workers, 60 billion dollars are owed in national debt and the economy is virtually grounded. ”Today, Nigerians are roaming the streets, jerry cans in hand, searching for everything from kerosene to fuel to diesel to power their homes, keep their vehicles on the road and keep their businesses going. They are paying as much as 300 Naira per litre for fuel, if at all they can get it. Yet their government is not saying a word about the situation.” APC said while the “Jonathan administration has arrogantly told Nigerians that it remains in office and in power till May 29, all it has been doing was sacking people and making new appointments as if it has been deprived of the opportunity to do so in the past six years.” The incoming ruling party added, ”They are not interested in how to end the fuel scarcity that has paralysed the socio-economic lives of Nigerians, they are not interested in how to raise electricity production from its unprecedentedly-low level of 1,327 megawatts, they are not doing anything to end the strike by blue and while collar oil workers, or to stop the impending one. ”They say they are in office till May 29, but they do not care how workers in 18 states, who are owed a total of N300bn in salaries under their watch, or federal workers, who are owed N400bn will be paid. Yet they are running a budget of N1tr deficit. ”They have deliberately stopped meeting their obligations to oil marketers, which is now around N200bn; hence, no one is lifting petroleum products anymore. If the current energy crisis is not solved soonest, the telecommunications sector could even be grounded in a matter of days as service providers will have neither electricity nor fuel to power their base stations. “Of course, the aviation sector has already been left comatose by the fuel crisis. The whole scenario reeks of sabotage!” APC said before PDP and “Jonathan administration’s spin doctors distort its message, it is important to let Nigerians know that the party (APC) is not engaging in lamentations but simply keeping the citizenry informed of the situation on the ground”, with just five days to the handover date. APC stated, ”If we thought the nation was being well managed and there was no problem, we would not have embarked on a campaign of change. While we are ready, willing and able to begin to address the mammoth challenges facing us as a nation as soon as we assume office at the centre in a few days’ time, we will not hesitate for a second to keep Nigerians informed of how we have been brought to this sorry pass, with a view to avoiding such a tragic turn in the future.” It expressed sadness that the nation had been on auto pilot for the past several weeks, saying the outgoing administration had shown neither the capacity nor the willingness to resolve any of the crises it had “contrived and foisted” on the nation. ”This is the most vivid manifestation of the old saying that literally translates to a departing office holder defecating on the chair he is vacating,” APC said. |
The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress Congress, APC, John Oyegun, has warned senators elected on the party’s platform that they are coming into office at at one of the most challenging periods in the history of Nigeria. Mr. Oyegun gave the warning on Saturday while opening a retreat organised for the elected lawmakers at Ibeto Hotel in Abuja. “While I congratulate all of you on your elections, I must quickly add that I don’t envy you. This is because you are being called to service at one of the most challenging periods in the history of our nation. “Unparalleled commitment, uncommon patriotism, unprecedented hard work and indeed a reservoir of your innermost strength will be required, as our party takes the centre stage in the next few days and begins to implement its programmes for the benefit of the long suffering people. “Make no mistake about it, the days ahead will be tough, and this is not crying wolf,” Mr. Oyegun said at the first formal gathering of the elected APC lawmakers. The APC chairman said from the first day in office of the incoming government, a total of N4.1 trillion will be required for sundry expenses, including oil subsidy payment, arrears of salaries at federal and state levels and debt servicing. He added that these challenges are against the background of the falling global oil prices, the $60 billion debt which the outgoing government has left for the incoming one, the largely depleted Excess Crude Account, the billions lost in the last four years to crude oil theft, the need to rapidly create jobs for the nation’s teeming army of unemployed youth, and to enhance the security of the citizenry and improve the economy. “This is not a lamentation forum, but still, we must tell ourselves the truth about the state of the nation, and the expectations of our people,” he said. Mr. Oyegun said some Nigerians expect that “all the streets in Nigeria will be air conditioned while electricity will become stable and fuel scarcity will be a thing of the past,” from the first day President-elect Muhammadu Buhari is sworn in. “Yes, we will get there, but it won’t happen overnight,” he said. “You, our Senators-elect, will be called upon to take extraordinary actions to address the extraordinary challenges that confront our nation.” Mr. Oyegun reiterated that Mr. Buhari would need the full support of the National Assembly to fulfill his campaign promise to Nigerians. “You may be required to pass important bills at very short notices. This will not be unprecedented but will require a buy-in to the programmes of the President and the Party and a willingness to work with him and the party for the benefit of all Nigerians. “The demands on you will be tasking, but you are up to the task,” he said. Mr. Oyegun also informed the lawmakers that like Mr. Buhari, Nigerians would focus their attention on the APC and the lawmakers themselves. He said Nigerians would love to see how the APC would practice what it preached, such as running a lean and effective government, one that eschews waste, corruption and indiscipline, and one that will harness the nation’s human, material and natural resources for the well being of the people. He warned that there is no magic wand to make the Nigerian economy better overnight. “Against the realities on the ground, some of which I listed earlier, reviving our economy will be a long and tortuous process. Bold decisions will need to be taken, and this can only be possible if there is a synergy among our party, the National Assembly and the President. We know you will not fail us, and you will not fail Nigerians,” he said. |

Ateke Tom was a general in the defunct Movement for the Emancipation of Niger Delta, MEND. In this interview, the soft spoken ex militant General bares his mind on his expectations from the incoming All Progressive congress, APC led government at the centre. He dismisses fears that hostilities may resume in the region when President Goodluck Jonathan finally bows out of office on May 29. He fielded questions on why he rears lions in his Okrika residence. Excerpts: What are your expectations from the President Elect, General Muhamadu Buhari I expect him to lead the country on the right path, provide quality leadership. And I am sure the President Elect will make positive impact. I am sure he knows what to do, he knows what the country expect from him. He should give all Nigerians opportunity to contribute meaningfully to his government. Let me just add that the Niger Delta still needs serious attention. He should develop the region. Later, we will tell him some of the things we expect him to give special attention to. There are fears that some boys in the Niger Delta may resume hostilities, militancy at the end of President Goodluck Jonathan’s tenure No! No! I don’t see militancy coming back again in the region. Niger Delta will be very peaceful than what it was under President Jonathan. Well I want to say that nobody will go back to the creeks. Anybody who does that has no reason for that and should be treated as a common criminal. We don’t have any reason to resume militancy in the region. So there will be peace. Speculations are high that the President -elect will cancel the pipeline surveillance contracts awarded to individuals and groups recently. You have something to say on this ? We got the pipeline security job for our area. And we are doing the job very well. My advice to the President elect, General Buhari is that he should not cancel it when he formerly assumes office. Those who got the job are taking care of the pipelines and are doing the job commendably. If he cancels it I don’t see who else can do it better. We hail from these places where the pipelines run through and so are very familiar with the terrain. He should allow us continue to render this service to the country. You are a leader of so many youths in this region. Any advice to Buhari on now to tackle challenges facing youths? My message is simple. He should create jobs for people. This will reduce crime. Job will keep them busy. When the youths are engaged their minds are busy. When they are idle they think of bad things sometimes. So jobs will help. What kind of Rivers state do you see under the incoming government of Barr Nyesom Wike? First, there will be jubilation all over the state when the Governor elect, Barr Wike assumes office as governor of the state. You know Rivers people have been clamoring for change. We need change and we want it dearly in our state. We saw how President Goodluck Jonathan is cooperating with those who say they want change at the top. But here in Rivers state they are doing as if they don’t want to vacate the seat for the man who won the election. We want the change in the state so they should cooperate. Rivers people will come out to dance that May 29 , to celebrate the change in baton. I see a new Rivers state where everybody will be happy. You know we have been in hell in the last eight years. Judiciary shut down, House of Assembly not functioning. A lot of police cells over stretched because no court to try cases. We have been in hell since. So I see a new Rivers state where everybody will be happy. There have been cases of violence all over. What are you expecting ? I see a state that will be very peaceful. People will not believe the story of peace that will be coming out of the state. Though they recorded minor violence in some parts of the state during the last election but you know the violence was below the expectations of many outside the state. People had thought that the state will burn so they were surprised that we recorded peaceful elections in most parts of the state. In Okrika nobody threw a stone during the elections. We had very peaceful elections here in Okrika. Remember many people had listed it as a likely flash point during the elections. But finally no violence was recorded. The thing is that some people in power fail to recognize that some persons can contribute positively to their government. They ignore these persons. This is why you see some things I call, nonsense in some areas. Engage the right people, everybody has a role to play to build a healthy state and nation. As one of those in the Wike government I will make sure the youths see the beauty of peace. If you fail to embrace peace we will see that you are handed over to government for necessary action. Because we cannot compromise the peace of our dear state. Is there anything the outgoing government did that you will advise the incoming one to avoid in the state? The outgoing government was unfair in several ways to the people. People were bundled into jails, dumped in Police cells. I am sure the incoming government will not do all these. It will be a friendly government. You command a very large follower-ship of youths. A large number of them are always around you. The old also identify with you in your community. How are you able to sustain the loyalty of this army of youths? Leadership is ordained by God almighty. And when he makes you a leader he gives you wisdom to lead the people. In Okrika I take care of most people in this community. Parents come to me for assistance to pay school fees for their children, hospital bills. The list is endless. I am often there for people when they come to me for assistance. This is why when you come to my house you see crowd of people waiting to see me. It is the same thing when I am in Lagos. I don’t mind your tribe when I render assistance. My loyalists are increasing everyday from all parts of the country. In Lagos, my house is like a big church. You see people coming and going because of the milk of human kindness in me. What advice do you have for the rich I know there are those who are richer than me. I advise them to be there for the poor. There are so many challenges of poverty in our country so they should be there for them. I also had rough period while growing up so I know what it means to be poor. That is why I always assist needy ones who come around me. I pay fees , I run a scholarship scheme for many indigent students. I fund wedding ceremonies for many. I assist many to complete their buildings. So many things I can’t recall. I see animals of all kinds, including lions in your compound. Tell us a little about your love for animals. Particularly why you keep lions . Meanwhile, accept my condolence over the death of one of the lions today. He laughs. This lion story is good. I like animals. If you walk round my compound you see several animals except snake because I fear snake a lot. I was in Dubai for a wedding there I saw a man playing with a lion and I told myself I will keep some in my compound. I finally got two from South Africa. I built a special place for them in my compound. One just died today. Does your wife go close to them General laughter. Even me, I don’t go close to them. We have a way we feed them. |

Diezani had been billed to travel to the UK next week Tuesday according to a source, however upon learning that Buhari was traveling to London, she asked the airline to book her on the same flight as Buhari so that she could have a chance to discuss directly with the President-Elect. The British Airways flight departed Abuja this morning at 9:00am Nigerian time. Several aides and close associates of Buhari said they were surprised to learn of the trip since they were with him till 7PM last night shortly after he arrived from his hometown, Duara. A family source told SaharaReporters that Buhari was traveling to London for the weekend and is expected back in Nigeria on Tuesday in time for the swearing in ceremonies. |
