In the word of genius Karl Marx, religion is opium of the masses. According to him, the world is been run by few elite who due to their greed for wealth and power subjected a large number of poor people into inhumane conditions and comfort them with religion. Ironically, this is the way of life in so many societies, Nigeria included. Nigeria gained independence with the hope for a better nation filled with love, joy, development; however, many years from the historic 1960 liberation, we have dwell in the worst form of life which has given us a permanent seat in the league of third world nations. From the first republic till date, the recklessness of our leaders has led to pure underdevelopment with serious economic hardship and dilapidated society. To avoid any backlash, religion has become the tool that keeps the suffering masses loyal. Thus, religion is a tool of governance. Nigeria is divided into North and South; the North predominantly Muslims and the South Christians. The North has ruled the nation for many years but still found her selves in a dire situation of famine, low level education, poor health care, war and many other disasters. This is unfortunate for a region that has produced the largest number of leaders. Ironically, the people are still subjected to the leaders who have failed them. This couldn’t have been possible without religious leaders who provide routes for these leaders to dominate. It is believe that religious leaders are omniscience and they are the mouthpiece of God with their opinions not questionable. Hence, whatever they say, the followers must obey without questioning. The poor are ignorant, weak-minded, easily deceived, and in a state of hardship, religion reduces their immediate suffering and provided them with pleasant illusions of eternal enjoyment after this world. This reduces their willingness to confront the oppressive, heartless and soulless elites. A vivid example of how politicians manipulate the minds of the people shows when Governor Yari of Zamfara State attributed Meningitis outbreak in the state to God’s punishment of the people for fornication instead of taking the blame for his government poor response to the outbreak. He however received backlash from the public including the Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi. For so many years, Nigerian masses have been in serious hardship and this has continued to pile up day after day. The people are dying because there is no good hospital, there is no food to eat, graduates aren’t employed, no electricity, water, good roads and many more. Though, the problem and the source are known to all, no one dares them. The people ask themselves if the earth is worth fighting and dying for since there is a safe home for them somewhere with abundant enjoyment beyond human comprehension. At the end, they relax, hung on to faith. Is there is a form of connivance of religious and political leaders against the proletariat? Since the realities of life put them in distress and prevent them from finding true happiness in life, religion tends to promise them solace. These illusory fantasies make many passive as they give them relief; help to take the pain away from the struggles of life and act as good things that make life worth living. For how long would this continues? Humans need to create an egalitarian society with the best form of socio-economic and political condition. It is time for the blind to see. Freedom is not given, it is earned. The people should free themselves from agents of deceit. www.mbnaija.com/2017/07/01/religion-is-the-opium-of-the-people-who-stands-to-gain/

You heard he is a cultist, you could not believe it; you said “He is so young”. Now, you have seen him, marijuana parting his lips, a tattooed snake on his arm and in his hand is a bottle of beer. You stood afar and criticized him, you told your friends that hell awaits him; you shook your head and said to yourself, “He is already doomed”. But you do not know that within the bad, hard guy lies a fragile, aching heart wanting to be loved and showed a little care. Now, he only finds solace in his gang because his dad and mom are on the brink of divorce. She knocked on your door asking to help you do anything for food or money. She looked so unkempt and malnourished. You were torn between pity and disbelief. You know her uncle to be a rich and religious man, an elder in his church/mosque, and you can’t help but wonder why she would be in this sorry state. You concluded that she has been wayward and disrespectful and this is his way of punishing her. Without asking her any questions, you managed to give her a rumpled ₦100 note, sent her away and told her not to come back. She leaves, fighting tears, wondering how she would go back to her uncle who had sworn not to take care of her except she warms his bed. A ragged looking man mistakenly stepped on you and before he could apologize, you rained insult on him, his family and his generation. You saw the tears well up in his eyes but you did not bother to show any empathy. That man has been going through a hard time. He is a job-hunting father who just lost his only son and has been pondering on how to bury his dead. To you, he is just a depressed fellow who should not bother others with his woes. You saw her in a bar reeking of alcohol, she kept laughing and muttering to himself “Why me, Why me?” You walked past her, even though a voice inside of you kept telling you to find out her problem. You shut the voice down and tagged her “A cheap drunk”. But that cheap drunk is a widow who had just been diagnosed with breast cancer; moreover, she just lost her job a month ago. Now, she thinks those bottles of alcohol could wash away her sorrows. And you claim to have the light, you boast in the scriptures because you know only the letters but you are devoid of revelation. You failed to bring the “bad, hard guy” close and show him the truth and now he has fulfilled the request of his gang by raping his younger sister leaving his whole family distraught and confused. Also, your ₦100 could not help that young girl for she finally yielded to the advances of her “rich and religious” uncle. Now, she has been deflowered, all hormones have been let loose. She has been selling her wares to all and sundry and she got pregnant. At present, her cold body is lying in a mortuary because of trying to commit an abortion just because you refused to bring her close and show her the ideals of life and yet you claim you have the light. The depressed man you insulted was seen hanging from a mango tree recently. His suicide note read “I am too weak to carry on”. You could not show him any form sympathy; perhaps, he might have shared his burden with you. Then you would have let him know that in his weakness, God’s strength is manifested. And you claim you have the light. That “cheap drunk” is now on the hospital bed staring into space in despair, waiting for death to wrap on the door. All she needs is a message of hope, a message that would give her life not destructive criticism. When you throw negative energy at another human being, you are hurting him or her, whether you realize it or not. You have the ability to interfere with another’s self-esteem and self-worth which changes who they are and how they perceive the world around them. At the same time, you are throwing negative energy out into the universe for yourself. . A judgmental person is insecure, scared, intimidated or lonely because judging others end up hurting an individual involved in the act. Also, when you judge other people, it makes us feel worse about ourselves afterwards. You might get a tiny rush from the judgments, but, ultimately, you feel guilty. You think you’re a bad person for casting such harsh judgments on others. You bring yourself down when you bring others down. If you’re judging others, you’re probably judging yourself pretty harshly as well. For instance when you judge ones clothing, food or behaviour, you are extremely careful what you eat as well as your behaviour so you won’t fall a victim. You can stop judging people by monitoring your thoughts and pushing them in a positive direction. There is almost always something positive you can find in someone or something. Avoid stereotyping and focus on your own life. When all else fails and judgments are hard to push away, focus on yourself. Don’t worry about what other people are doing, wearing, eating, etc. Also, remember how it feels to be judged. AND remember how it felt the last time you judged someone else. It doesn’t feel good to judge or to be judged so put an end to it right now. Anger begets anger. Violence begets violence, and that is why there is so much pain in the world. However, we should never be accepting of behaviour that blatantly harms another human being either. So for those who profess to stand strongly against the atrocities of humanity, put your passion to work by doing all that you can to come from a place of love and be of service to those in need of help — not from a place of anger toward their situation and hate for their oppressors. If you engage in the latter, all you are doing is simply adding strength and momentum to the energies you claim to be fighting against, which only perpetuates the endless cycle. We can’t solve the world’s issues with the same mind-set that created them. It is our pure and loving intentions, devoid of ego, that will support the highest good of all mankind. We know that we’re all different, have our own opinions and everyone is never going to agree on everything. Hence, the bottom line is as it always has been; if you can’t say something nice, well, you know the rest because inside every person you know, there is a person you don’t know. At the end of this year, African leaders called for a collective withdrawal from the International Criminal Court. This joined the growing list of criticism of the court which has been accused of being bias towards the African continent. All but one of the 10 investigations launched so far by the ICC have been about the African continent; is the International Criminal Court targeting Africa inappropriately? South Africa, Burundi and Gambia have all opted out. Kenya, Namibia and many others are reconsidering their membership. One of the reasons for this action is that the court has received information about alleged abuse in other parts of the world but justice has not been done. In 2015, a preliminary investigation was made on the 2014 Gaza conflict after Palestinian Authority submitted evidence to the court. They claimed Israel military committed war crimes while a U.N report showed an evidence of crime committed by Hamas and Israel military. However, nothing concrete was done. There are also allegations of abuses in Iraq, Venezuela, Colombia, Afghanistan, Russia, and China. Meanwhile, the U.N Security Council, a major stakeholder in ICC is one of the most powerful yet imbalanced systems that in 2002, it exempted the United States from persecution for 12 months and it was renewed annually until Kofi Annan, former Secretary General refused to renew it in 2004 after there was evidence of U.S troops abusing Iraq prisoners. Britain has not been indicted over it involvement in Iraq war after evidences later emerged that there was no direct threat from Iraq’s former dictator Saddam Hussein. Observation has been raised by African States that their obligations to the court are preventing them from making diplomatic decisions such as immunity for leaders and officials in order to hold peaceful negotiations; while the U.N Security Council has been criticized for lack of objectivity and political inequality. There is no single African country in its permanent seat even after serious lobbying. Sometimes, it ignores African leaders’ requests to try to handle issues first before ICC. Thus, African countries like Namibia are on their way out of ICC because the country no longer needs the court since their own legal institutions are now strengthened. Nevertheless, the ICC is the last resort for the world’s most vulnerable people. The court rejected various accusations and stated that the cases it handles have to do with jurisdiction and signatory of the Rome Statute which most African countries ratified. But whenever credible national prosecutions are taking place, the court may not exercise jurisdiction. Frustrations with the ICC are understandable but exiting it is not the best solution. Since its formation, it has been able to deal with serious cases such as genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes. Its flaws should be taken care of through reformation. The African states also need to review its justice system. We should strengthen our judicial system and expand the jurisdiction of the African court of justice and human rights. ICC should begin to genuinely investigate violations of its law committed by super powerful nations especially those in the U.N Security Council and their allies. A.U should be given more powers, responsibilities together with a permanent representative in the Security Council. This would be a big step for the union to checkmate its members and prevent war crime. Hence, Africans would see themselves as part of the international justice circle. www.mbnaija.com/2017/05/13/the-international-criminal-court-at-the-hague-making-an-african-case/
