– Abraham urges his supporters to remain calm as more groups reject Ondo APC guber candidate Akeredolu – The runner up in the APC primaries tells his supporters that the party leadership is undoubtedly up to the task of handling the crisis – The protesters say Akeredolu who has been implicated in the anomalies that rocked the election, should be disqualified if found guilty Protests continued all over Akoko and Akure following the defeat of Dr. Segun Abraham, the Ondo All Progressives Congress (APC) front-runner candidate in the party’s primaries conducted on Saturday, September 3. The yesterday, September 8, protesters stormed Abraham’s residence to give him solidarity support. In his message to them, Dr. Abraham, who was apparently overwhelmed by their show of solidarity, simply appealed to them to be calm and peaceful. He assured them that the party leadership is undoubtedly up to the task of handling the crisis, NAIJ.com reports. Dr. Segun Abraham calls for calm as Ondo indigenes reject Akeredolu Some of the protesters were vigorous in calling for the recall of Hon. Stephen Friday Olemija who they accused of sabotaging Akoko’s effort and determination to produce the next Governor of Ondo state in Dr. Abraham. Olemija currently represents Akoko North East and Akoko North West local government areas in the House of Representatives. Both he and Dr. Abraham are from Ikare in Akoko North East. The protesters thereafter sealed up Olemija’s house with palm fronds and the place has been deserted. Similar protests have been staged amongst different circles in the state’s capital, Akure, as many are seen berating the process that led to the re-emergence of a guber candidate in Akeredolu, who represented the APC in 2012. Reacting, a former commissioner in the state, Hon. Julius Akinnigbagbe described the development in the party as worrisome. “Honestly it beats my imagination that an Ikare son can work like that against the interest of Ikare,” he lamented. But a former secretary to the state government, Hon. Fisayo Bajowa, was more concerned about the party in general. According to him, “What I have been hearing since the conclusion of the primaries makes me very sad. It is very bad for a party like APC which is a change agent to be associated with election malpractices as we have been hearing. I want to believe that it is all false otherwise it is sad commentary on the party.” Commenting further, he expressed the hope that the party would redress the situation. “Any aspirant found to have manipulated the primaries should be severely dealt with,” he recommended. Chief Erastus Akeju, an elder of the party has advocated for the disqualification of Barrister Rotimi Akerele (SAN) the winner of the primaries if found guilty of election manipulation. “If that happens,” he recommended, “the runner-up should be declared the winner.” On the protests in Akoko land, he said: “Everyone is outraged by what Olemija did, but that is not my greatest headache. My headache is that Aketi that emerged from the primaries is not popular with the people at all. Go to town and hear what people have been saying. With him as candidate, APC should simply forget the election.” Corroborating Chief Akeju, an Akure-based political activist, Chief Mrs. Nike Oladare simply asked, “Were the delegates blind? How can they go and vote for Aketi? Nobody can make that one governor o. He is too arrogant and pugnacious.” Continuing she said: “Anyway I understand that he rigged the election. We don’t even know that he is a rigger too." The Ondo APC primary election remains enshrouded in controversies as more groups keep joining the host of petitioners to challenge the outcome, with the most recent being the Ondo North Elders Assembly of APC. In a statement issued on Wednesday, September 7 and made available to NAIJ.com, the group is calling for the party’s disqualification of Akeredolu, and/or any of the aspirants that is implicated in the anomalies that rocked the election. Akeredolu polled 669 votes to defeat Abraham, who had 635 votes. Twenty-four aspirants jostled for the party’s ticket in the governorship primary election, while a total of 2774 delegates were accredited to vote during the exercise which was monitored by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). https://www.naij.com/961976-controversy-ondo-indigenes-reject-apc-guber-candidate.html?source=index_main

The Peoples Democratic Party on Monday said its Director of New Media, Deji Adeyanju, has not been removed. Ahmed Makarfi, Chairman of the party’s Caretaker Committee, told PREMIUM TIMES that the leadership of the party only had issues with some “far-reaching statements” distributed by Mr. Adeyanju “without clearance.” Mr. Adeyanju was announced removed in a statement distributed by Dayo Adeyeye, the party’s publicity secretary, on Friday afternoon. The statement cited different acts of insubordination. The statement, signed by Chinwe Nnorom on behalf of Mr. Adeyeye, also said @PdpNigeria, the official Twitter handle of the party run by Mr. Adeyanju, was no longer recognised by the party. “In view of the above, the party has immediately re-launched a new handle: @officialpdpnig to form part of the social media platform of our great party for ease of communication, administration and control,” Mr. Adeyeye was quoted as saying. But in a message to PREMIUM TIMES, Mr. Makarfi, a former governor of Kaduna State, said the PDP still recognises Mr. Adeyanju and the new media department, but added that their activities would be streamlined going forward. “If he was employed by the last National Working Committee, then we will have no reason to remove him but to streamline his work,” Mr. Makarfi said. Mr. Makarfi is the head of an ad-hoc leadership set up by the party at its botched national convention in Port Harcourt last month. Mr. Adeyanju was appointed in December 2015, and had been responsible for issuing press statements on behalf of the party. After months of controversial statements following the party’s 2015 elections misfortune, the PDP apologised for contributing to the toxic atmosphere on social media and promied to improve on its opposition by making it more robust and constructive. Last week, Mr. Adeyanju signed a statement calling for the resignation of President Buhari in the wake of the country’s descent into recession. It is not immediately clear if that statement contributed to the leadership’s disagreement with him. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/209876-not-sacked-adeyanju-pdp-new-media-director-makarfi.html

– Dr. Ngige says President Buhari has started restructuring Nigeria – Ngige says the president is restructuring the nation’s economy – He says Buhari would look into the political restructuring of the country at the appropriate time Dr. Chris Ngige, the minister of Labour and Employment, on Monday, September 5, disclosed that President Muhammadu Buhari is not against restructuring. Ngige made this known in a chat with newsmen in Awka, the Anambra state capital, even as he revealed that the Buhari-led government has begun restructuring process, but with its first point of call being the nation’s economy, The Punch reports. According to him, the impact might not be felt immediately but with time, Nigerians will be happy because of the on-going restructuring by the APC administration. He said: “Nigerians have positively changed their way of doing things for the better and have become more prudent and judicious in their spending pattern.” Ngige also assured Nigerians that Buhari would look into the political restructuring of the country at the appropriate time. Dr Chris Ngige has said that President Muhammadu Buhari is restructuring Nigeria. He said: “It’s one after the other. After economic restructuring to reposition the economy of this country, the Buhari administration will embark on the political restructuring and will set the modalities for the exercise.” On whether the restructuring would revisit the 2014 National Conference report, Ngige said: “When we get there, we shall address the issues.” Ngige urged the agitating militants to embrace peace, adding that violence would not do anybody any good. “Militancy and agitations are not the answer to resolving Nigeria’s myriads of problems, which the Buhari administration didn’t create in the first place. “What is required is for all to support this administration to meet its set goals for the development and transformation of all sections of the country.” The presidency has continuously kicked against the call from different segments of the Nigerian society that the country should be restructured. Recently, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, the vice president, said restructuring was not the solution to these challenges. He believes what matters is true governance. But Atiku Abubakar, Nigeria’s former vice president, and other groups in the country do not believe this. The Niger Delta Avengers, the Indigenous People of Biafra and other agitating groups are all fighting for either restructuring or full secession from Nigeria. https://www.naij.com/957118-revealed-buhari-begins-restructuring-process.html?source=index_main
