Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu chaired an overnight security meeting that continued for more than five and a half hours, concluding around 1:30 a.m. Following the meeting, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said Israel has no desire to become involved in the current limited confrontation between the United States and Iran, arguing that the ongoing situation—including the U.S. naval blockade—is the most advantageous scenario for Israel. Smotrich said the long-term goal should be to bring about the collapse of the Iranian regime through continued economic pressure. He stressed that Israel is prepared for any development and warned that Tehran would "regret it" if it chooses to launch attacks against Israel. 2 Likes

Amit Segal: A few days ago, the Qataris submitted a proposal to regulate the Strait of Hormuz. A response from the leader was supposed to arrive yesterday, but it did not. The proposal includes establishing a new, designated corridor through which ships could pass, while imposing a moratorium on two other routes (north and south). In other words, allowing traffic, but in a limited manner. In addition, the Qataris are willing to unfreeze $1.3 billion for the Iranians. 1 Like |

Tehran is facing a perfect storm. Long before the war, the city was already sinking by up to 30 centimeters (12 inches) every year because decades of reckless groundwater extraction permanently collapsed the aquifers beneath it. Extensive urbanization and concrete development have prevented rainwater from naturally recharging those underground reservoirs, leaving the ground unstable and causing roads, buildings, metro stations, and critical infrastructure to crack and deform. Now add months of war. Thousands of buildings have been damaged or destroyed, fuel depots and industrial facilities have been hit, key military and government infrastructure has been targeted, and entire neighborhoods have suffered extensive destruction. The capital now faces the enormous challenge of rebuilding on land that is literally sinking beneath it. Reconstructing a modern city is difficult under the best of circumstances. Reconstructing one whose foundations are collapsing is another matter entirely. Every new building, road, bridge, pipeline, and rail line must contend not only with war damage but also with ongoing ground subsidence that continues year after year. Tehran’s greatest long-term threat may not be what fell from the sky - it may be what is disappearing beneath the ground. Unless Iran fundamentally reforms its water management, every reconstruction project will be built on increasingly unstable foundations.

In February 1947, British Foreign Secretary Ernest Bevin declared that the competing demands of Jews and Arabs were fundamentally irreconcilable, prompting Britain to hand the Palestine Mandate over to the United Nations. According to him these were the two sides positions at the time: The Jewish goal: The establishment of a sovereign, independent Jewish state. The Arab goal: To prevent Jewish sovereignty in any part of Palestine and stop further Jewish immigration. Notice what is missing. Where was the demand for an independent “Palestinian” state? It wasn’t. That was never the objective. The Arab world already consisted of numerous sovereign states. What they could not accept was the existence of a single Jewish state in the midst of them. That is why Golda Meir during a press conference in London in 1969 famously said: “Peace will come when the Arabs love their children more than they hate us.” Her words remain a sobering reminder that lasting peace requires acceptance of Israel’s right to exist, not merely negotiations over its borders.

CENTCOM: On July 17, two U.S. service members in Jordan were killed in action as U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) and partner forces defended against Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks. Additionally, one service member is currently missing. Four American service members were medically evacuated to Jordanian hospitals. They have since been discharged. Other personnel who were evaluated for minor injuries have returned to duty.
