Criticism, if really you understand what it means doesn't always mean mockery, the two are mutually exclusive. Criticism is more like disapproval or denunciation of something based on perceived imperfection of a certain thing, and hence I can equally say, criticism is equivalent to disbelieve in a particular thing after you must have ascertain a supposed mistake from such thing. Criticism is allowed in so far it doesn't bring about physical assault. Mockery on the other hand, according to Google, is teasing and contemptuous language or behavior directed at a particular person or thing. In other words deliberate taunting of what people hold dear, this is not cool. The two as you can see are totally different things.

Now relating this to the story of the prophet riding a donkey to heaven, it's either you criticize or you mock. To criticize, you either say, it's a no brainer because that's not possible. Yes definitely because you see the fault and then you disapprove it, and it ends there. That's criticism. Mocking on the other hand, you don't stop at disapproving it, you go ahead to insult those that approve it by calling them fools for believe such a ridiculous thing. Obviously the two are different, aren't they?

Religion beliefs shouldn't be exempted from criticism as long as it's expressed publicly.

Giving room for criticism does not give the right to go about joking or taunting what believe hold in high esteem. There's a difference between criticism and deliberate taunting.
