Saudi Arabia, the birthplace of Islam, has announced that the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan will begin on Saturday.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and is observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting (Sawm) to commemorate the first revelation of the Quran to Mohammed according to Islamic belief.

This annual observance is regarded as one of the Five Pillars of Islam.

According to numerous biographical accounts compiled in the hadiths, Ramadan lasts 29 to 30 days, based on the visual sightings of the crescent moon..

The beginning and end of Islamic months are determined by the sighting of the new moon.

Lebanon’s top Islamic authority, the mufti, said Ramadan would also begin in the country on Saturday.

A similar statement was made by officials in Iraq’s Muslim Sunni minority.

During Ramadan, Muslims have to abstain from eating, drinking and smoking from dawn to sunset.

Devout Muslims also mark the month by intense worship, performing special nightly prayers and reading Islam’s holy book, the Koran.

Fasting is one of Islam’s five pillars, alongside declaration of monotheism, prayer five times a day, alms-giving, and the pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia.

A key principle involves turning haters in to close friends. How?

The Qur’an makes it clear:

Respond to evil with something better.

Surah Fussilat, Verse 34:
وَلَا تَسْتَوِي الْحَسَنَةُ وَلَا السَّيِّئَةُ ادْفَعْ بِالَّتِي هِيَ أَحْسَنُ فَإِذَا الَّذِي بَيْنَكَ وَبَيْنَهُ عَدَاوَةٌ كَأَنَّهُ وَلِيٌّ حَمِيمٌ

The good deed and the evil deed are not alike. Repel the evil deed with one which is better, then lo! he, between whom and thee there was enmity (will become) as though he was a bosom friend.

If that doesn’t work, then always reply with words of peace:

Surah Al-Furqan, Verse 63:
وَعِبَادُ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الَّذِينَ يَمْشُونَ عَلَى الْأَرْضِ هَوْنًا وَإِذَا خَاطَبَهُمُ الْجَاهِلُونَ قَالُوا سَلَامًا

For, [true] servants of the Most Gracious are [only] they who walk gently on earth, and who, whenever the foolish address them, reply with [words of] peace;

Another key principle is to not be blinded by hatred. Don’t let hatred make you swerve from fairness. You may even learn something from those who hate you.

Surah Al-Maeda, Verse 8:
يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا كُونُوا قَوَّامِينَ لِلَّهِ شُهَدَاءَ بِالْقِسْطِ وَلَا يَجْرِمَنَّكُمْ شَنَآنُ قَوْمٍ عَلَىٰ أَلَّا تَعْدِلُوا اعْدِلُوا هُوَ أَقْرَبُ لِلتَّقْوَىٰ وَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ خَبِيرٌ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ

O YOU who have attained to faith! Be ever steadfast in your devotion to God, bearing witness to the truth in all equity; and never let hatred of any-one lead you into the sin of deviating from justice. Be just: this is closest to being God-conscious. And remain conscious of God: verily, God is aware of all that you do

Don’t give up on using these timeless principles. Remember, the reward for goodness, is good itself:

Surah Al-Rahman, Verse 60:
هَلْ جَزَاءُ الْإِحْسَانِ إِلَّا الْإِحْسَانُ
Is there any reward for good other than good?

Imams and Muslim youth from around the UK drove to Manchester, England on Tuesday in a display of solidarity after the city's deadly terror attack.

Zishan Ahmad, an imam at London's Baitul Futuh Mosque, made the 8-hour round trip to pay tribute to the victims at a vigil outside Manchester City Hall.

He joined about 50 members of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association -- and hundreds of others who attended the solemn event..


For Ahmad, seeing a city being shaken up by tragedy is all too familiar.

"I as a Londoner experienced the same thing this great city of Manchester is experiencing," Ahmad said, referring to the attack near UK's Parliament in March that left four dead.

"For this reason I have come up here to show my support and convey the true message of Islam, which condemns such barbaric attacks," he added.

The AMYA members held banners that read "Love for all, hatred for none."

Ahmad said this motto "signifies the basis starting point that Islam requires of a Muslim."

For Ahmad, the vigil was an experience that brought people together.

"People were approaching us, hugging us," Ahmad said. "It allowed us to show the local community and world at large that terrorists have nothing to do with Islam."
