In Islam, burial is not only a practical matter; it is an act of honoring the dead, protecting the living, and preserving the dignity that Allah has granted human beings. For that reason, the normal Islamic practice is to bury Muslims in a proper graveyard or Muslim cemetery rather than at home.
1) Preserving Tawhid and protecting the Aqeedah Another major reason for burying Muslims in proper cemeteries rather than at home is the preservation of Tawhid and the protection of Islamic belief. In some places, people begin to attach special powers to the dead, or to believe that the occupants of graves can hear, benefit, harm, or answer supplications. This can lead to serious religious deviation.
In Islam, the dead have entered the barzakh and have moved on to the next stage of existence. They are no longer part of this worldly life, and they do not possess any power to control their fate, let alone the affairs of the living. Therefore, making du‘a to the dead, seeking help from the occupants of graves, or directing acts of worship toward graves are grave violations of Islamic belief. Such practices may lead a person into shirk, which is one of the most serious sins in Islam and can nullify one’s Islam if done knowingly and deliberately.
For this reason, proper burial in a Muslim cemetery helps prevent grave-veneration, protects the purity of worship, and keeps the community away from practices that endanger aqeedah.
2) Protecting the validity and focus of Salah A home that contains graves is not ideal for Salah, because the Prophet ﷺ forbade praying in graveyards and warned against turning graves into places of worship. When graves are present in a house, it can create spiritual unease and blur the clear boundary between worship of Allah and reverence for the dead.
This is especially important in homes where many generations have been buried, such as great-grandfathers, great-grandmothers, grandfathers, and grandmothers. Even if the original intention was simply family burial, the presence of graves within a living space can affect the atmosphere of the home and diminish its suitability as a place for Salah, remembrance, and family worship.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“May Allah curse the Jews and the Christians; they took the graves of their prophets as places of worship.” — Sahih al-Bukhari 435; Sahih Muslim 531
He also said:
“Do not sit on graves and do not pray toward them.” — Sahih Muslim 972
For this reason, keeping graves separate from homes helps preserve the sanctity of Salah and protects the household from grave-related innovations.
3) Following the Sunnah and the practice of the Muslims The well-known practice of the Prophet ﷺ and the early Muslims was burial in designated burial grounds. The general Islamic principle is to bury the deceased in a grave that conceals the body, protects it, and is suitable for burial. Burying the dead in a proper cemetery is therefore more in line with the Sunnah and the established practice of the Muslims.
4) Burial in a cemetery preserves dignity and respect A cemetery provides a dedicated and dignified place for burial. It keeps the grave separate from ordinary daily life and reflects the seriousness of death, accountability, and the Hereafter. Islam encourages treating the dead with honor, and burial in a proper graveyard better fulfills that purpose.
5) It protects the living from hardship and harm Burying people at home can create emotional distress, health concerns, and practical problems for the family and neighbors. A cemetery avoids recurring disturbance, unpleasant conditions, and the burden of having graves within living spaces.
6) It prevents confusion and preserves public order If burials are done at home, they can cause confusion regarding property, movement of people, future construction, and inheritance issues. A cemetery keeps graves organized and prevents disputes.
7) It allows collective supplication and remembrance A Muslim cemetery gives family, friends, and the wider community a known place to visit, make du‘a, and remember the Hereafter. This helps maintain the bond between the living and the deceased in a proper Islamic way.
It is important to bury our dead in a Muslim cemetery and not at home because Islam seeks to preserve dignity, follow the Sunnah, protect the living, and maintain proper order. Above all, it protects Tawhid, preserves the sanctity of Salah, and prevents grave-based practices that may corrupt the aqeedah. Home burial is generally contrary to the better and more established Islamic practice.

kingjayzeelan07: Arise Television Morning Show anchor, Rufai Oseni, has expressed sympathy for President Bola Tinubu over his performance at the All Progressives Congress, APC, campaign rally in Kaduna State.
Oseni described Tinubu’s speech at the rally as one of the worst campaign speeches he had ever heard, arguing that the president’s aides failed to prepare him adequately for his first campaign outing ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking on Arise Television’s Morning Show on Monday, Oseni said Tinubu should not have campaigned in Kaduna if he was going to deliver such an embarrassing speech.
“I think that was the worst campaign speech I’ve ever heard in my life by President Tinubu.
“I think it was best he should not have even campaigned in Kaduna, because that was a terrible one for the eyes and for the ears,” he said.
The broadcaster faulted members of the president’s campaign council for allegedly failing to prepare a concise speech that would enable Tinubu to explain and defend his administration’s policies after nearly four years in office.
According to Oseni, the president’s aides should have prepared a five-minute speech summarising the achievements of the administration and explaining its policies to Nigerians.
He questioned why the campaign team allowed Tinubu to deliver what he described as a disjointed and uncoordinated speech at a critical moment in his re-election campaign.
“What is wrong with you guys? Is this how much you are so concerned about just collecting money from him?” Oseni asked.
He also criticised Tinubu’s remarks on the removal of the petrol subsidy and his attempt to blame the opposition for the poverty and hunger confronting Nigerians.
Oseni said the president’s speech lacked structure, coherence and a clear ideological direction, adding that it failed to provide an effective defence of his administration’s policies.
“You just allow a man like that to ad lib at his inaugural campaign speech after four years in office, where he needs to make a great defence, what did you guys do to him?” he said.
The broadcaster maintained that Tinubu’s campaign team had failed the president by allowing him to deliver such a speech without adequate preparation.
“I feel for President Tinubu this morning,” Oseni added.
DAILY POST reports that the APC has commenced its campaign activities ahead of the 2027 general elections, with Tinubu seeking another term in office.
SAMAJ: Billionaire industrialist Razaq Okoya’s family has disputed Fatai Okoya’s claim that he is the industrialist’s first-born child, insisting that he is, in fact, his third child.
The family issued the clarification in a statement signed by Nathaniel Omeninwan, senior public relations manager of Eleganza Industries Ltd, days after Fatai sought his father’s forgiveness and reconciliation.
PREMIUM TIMES earlier reported that Fatai pleaded for an opportunity to reconcile after 40 years apart. He described his father’s rejection as painful.
Fatai alleged he is Mr Okoya’s first child and accused Shade Okoya, his father’s wife, of blocking his attempt to see his father on his birthday.
However, the family denied the allegations in a statement made available to journalists on Thursday, citing what it described as ‘substantial financial support’ from the industrialist.
The family said Fatai received considerable benefits from his father, including four flats in Lagos and financial assistance for his medical treatment.
They said: “The Okoya family finds it regrettable that Fatai Okoya (who is in fact the third child of Aare Rasaq Okoya, CON) has dragged what are otherwise private family matters into the public domain to attract public sympathy, gain attention and unjustifiably discredit other family members. Fatai Okoya fell out with his father and stopped visiting him long before his father married Chief Mrs Shade Okoya, MON.
“Aare Rasaq Okoya, CON, has also publicly stated on numerous occasions that any child of his who is not prepared to respect, appreciate and abide by his wishes is on their own. Fatai Okoya has benefited immensely from his father and continues to benefit. He lives in, and has been given, four flats by his father in Ogunlana Surulere, and has at times been receiving payment for his medical bills.”
“Shade Okoya” The family also said Mr Okoya has always supported every family member, including those who chose to start their own businesses.
They said it was unfair to overlook his contributions and portray him otherwise.
The family also said four highly influential family friends intervened in the dispute more than 40 years ago and held an all-night meeting to resolve it.
They further dismissed claims that Mr Okoya’s wife stopped Fatai from seeing his father during the birthday celebration, insisting that no such incident occurred.
“Surprised by what Fatai was asking for, they still concluded that his father should settle him with what he was asking for, and this was carried out accordingly. During the medical outreach organised for the Aare’s 86th birthday, Chief Mrs Okoya was introduced to Fatai Okoya.
“A family member then spoke to Fatai Okoya and advised him that the occasion was not an appropriate time or place to discuss the issues he has with his father. On that advice, which Fatai Okoya agreed with, he left the medical outreach venue. Other than exchanging pleasantries with him, Chief Mrs Shade Okoya, MON, said nothing to him that day, and several guests witnessed the entire incident.”
Privacy Additionally, the family expressed displeasure over the public scrutiny, urging the media and members of the public to stop invading their privacy.
It insisted that any family member with a grievance against Mr Okoya must address it privately through the appropriate family channels, rather than turn personal matters into public affairs.
“Aare and Chief Mrs Okoya, and indeed the entire Rasaq Okoya family, are very quiet, private and easygoing citizens focused on their family, their charitable work and their businesses.
“Chief Mrs Okoya respects her husband and his wishes. They do not intend to turn private affairs into disputes to air or discuss on social media. No misunderstanding can be settled online”, said the family.
