Compounding factored in ?

Even if u compound it, the interest is so small that it can not be equally to 3 time the main money which will be equivalent to 18k now.

If some one had told you that about 20 yrs ago, precisely in 1999 when we accepted democracy, a dollar was about 20 naira. And popcorn was sold for 50 Kobo. Now a dollar is about 600 naira and a popcorn is 100 naira. This is about 200 times increase and also 20000%.

Man you are so funny, I couldn't help my laughing out loud reading the bolded. Pa Emma was trying to explain that saving 5K consistently by buying bond can make you be financially stable over a long period of time. Example, assuming you are 20 years old, buying 5k bond weekly or monthly till you are 40 years old will likely give lump some to buy land, build mini flat, marry wife, marry second wife and care for other expenses. The keywords here is CONSISTENCY.

My dear it's not possible!
5k per month for 1yr is 60k.
For 20yr, it's 1.2m

By that 20yrs, the minimum currency will be 10k note. Hence 10k can only buy what 50 naira which is the minimum currency now can buy. I know you may be thinking of the WHAT ABOUT THE INTEREST but it can not equal the main capital.

Naira would have depreciated by 200%.
You then 1.2m will be equivalent to 6k now,,,,(any way you still have something).

If not for the ban of crypto, the best investment would have been to buy usdt from binance at 7% per annum. Even though the interest is low but inflation will not affect it much since the money will be in dollars.

I like your explanations. It's well detailed and nice too. But you are giving remadies to the wrong people. The people that can implement them are not on nairaland.
jedisco:

Hehe.... You answered the question... What's more detrimental is that the new money is not being tied to capital expenditure or productivity rather, it's spent to keep borrowing rates high.

Of course, buying government debt of a weak currency can many times be detrimental unless macroeconomic measures have been put in place to reverse inflation. Foreign portfolio investors who rushed to buy CBNs TBs in 2014- 2016 cos of the 'juicy rates' we're burnt badly. Most were practically begging to leave with about half of their initial investment.

Regarding solutions, a number of things can be done
1. Government waste needs to be cut down significantly, this will allow the masses accept tightening measures down the line
2. Petrol subsidy removal/Dangote refinery- self explanatory
3. Borrowing rates should be cut down to help stem inflation. Bond rates shouldn't chase inflation.
4. New money should be tied to production
5. The tax base could still be improved in sensible ways....

Bro u are wrong, may be u calculated with 800k instead of 8m.

Bro you making sense o.

but why did you calculate rate on 8m instead of 10m

"He got 460,000 on 8.265m in 63days. Guess what yield that represents a whopping 32.25% p.a. If in doubt, please do the math, and let's see what comes up."

Her investment was 10m and that should represent a whopping 26.6% abi?

Landlord don suffer!!!!

But I think the best is that he should be bold because that will make it faster. Its his money !!!

NL1960:

Just write a letter to them saying you want a pre-mature termination as some urgent pressing needs came up. If by chance your account officer decides to ask you one-on-one the real reason, just tell him/her say Landlord wan pursue you comot for him house and also dem wan pursue your kids comot for school and stop them from writing their exams. QED.

Pre-mature termination na almost immediately. Once money hit your account, just go back there or go to another branch and ask for secondary market rates of TBs.

Guys who is using stanbic for Tbills... I don't know how they are charging their own..

But someone did N5M with stanbic but they deducted like 480K+ and they left the remaining in his account, I just want to know are they going to be paying the interest monthly because I don't know how 10%+ for 91 days tenure will be N162K for 5million N
aira.

The guy is angry, I just want to know whether its normal for stanbic users maybe I can explain more to him.

I await your replies guys.
please its high time we became good and sincere citizens of this great country.
10% of 5m is 500k
91 days is 1/4 of 1yr.
500k*1/4=125k.
he was paid 162k instead of 125k ( based on what u shared here)
please advice him to be a good citizen and return the excess of 37k. please let us together make our country better.

High interest rate is very bad to the economy, but we Treasury Bills investors are selfish. The higher the interest rate the better for us even though it may lead to businesses folding up , inflation going up and unemployment on the increase.

Can treasury bill high rate affect development like that when bank lending rate is more than 2x tb.

Bros, Feb2020 FGN Bond coupon payment is 15.54%, locked down till 2020.

Coupons are paid in February and August every year since the year 2015.

N8 million naira bond gives me a total of N1,243,200 as annual interest. Interest is paid twice ie February coupon is N621,600. August Coupon is N621,600.

My house rent is 600K and its paid in September annually. Child skool fees for the year is not over 300K.

The difference goes back into Treasury Bills with other incomes.

By February 2020, my N8 million will be credited back to me with the last coupon payment of N621,600. (Bullet payment)

note that the N8 million naira was an aggregate of different TBills i have bought over the years which i locked down for a long term bond.

This is one of more.

This is the reason i said before that your type work with gtb and not firstbank. At gtb u are advised to invest everything that is available.
Finally the school and house rent has to wait till maturity.

I love your spirit.

myopic thought.

I am sure you understand multiple income stream and cash flow. The fact that we were analysing the use of all money in an account did not mean all the money from all other accounts including statutory fees.

Who is talking of investing house rent and skool fees. are we talking about mmm here?

I am glad my coupons from FGN Bonds pays my rent and children's school fees annually with left over to be reinjected.

grin grin grin grin please educate us how your coupon paid those with left over. Did they pay you upfront? or your landlord and the schools waited for maturity.

This is completely false.

If your account has N40 million and you bid to buy TB of N50 million for 364 days at 20%, the entire N40 million is debited from your account and on maturity, N50 million is paid back to your account. There is no smart N10 million anywhere to be added to make the N60 million you talked about. Remember that your account had N40 million. So if you bid for N50 Million at 20%, the N10 million upfront interest didnt remain in your account because your acount initially had N40 million and not N50 million. If your account had 50 Million, then the N10 million upfront interest will be in your account while N40 million is debited.

There is no smart way that 20% yield will give you N60 million from N40 million. That's like saying you got yield of 50%. that is not true.

There are two scenarios here

scenario 1: You had N40 million in your account and you bid for N50 million at 20%. All the N40 million is taken and at the end of maturity, you are paid N50 million. Money moved from N40 million to N50 million. shikena

Scenario 2: You had N50 million in your account and you bid for N50 million TB at 20%. N10 million interest is paid upfront and left in your account while N40 million is debited from your account. On maturity, N50 Million is paid back. If you reinvest your N10 million, you get N2 million extra which brings the total interest to N12 million. Money moved from N50 million to N62 million.

None of these scenarios can make you up your money from N40 million to N60 million.

Thank you. Na ur kind of person, if not u, de work for gtb.

u will always advice to invest all.

this can even make somebody to invest his house rent or even children's school fees.

@All please note that landlord or these schools can not wait 1yr for maturity.
Investment / Re: Treasury Bills In Nigeria by Rizin: 8:52pm On Mar 20, 2017
chukzyfcbb:

well its not dubious per we, but its you outsmarting them. Writing the amount to be invested in your form as 1million when infact you don't have up to 1million in the account because you know not all is needed is you forming sharp guy. let's take for instance

someone with 40million in his account can place a bid of
50million at a discount rate of 20% for 364days.
now if this rate is successful, it means 20% which is
10million will be paid upfront while his 40million in the account will be debited.

at Maturity he gets back the 50million he indicated he invested plus his 10million upfront interest collected
making a total of 60million!!!
Now that's him using 40m at 20% to get 60million
instead of originally investing his 40m @ 20% to yield a total of 48million
so he outsmarted the system by gaining Awoof 12million
I doubt this would work even at the gtb bank , I strongly doubt it because it will cause the CBN to generate fresh fund immediately to be paid to you as upfront interest instead of just subtracting it from your original invested sum( in the example above, 10m is the fresh fund they will have to generate while taking ur 40m) ......Just doesn't seem right

Thank you. Na your kind of person if not u, dey work for first bank.
They will always advice that you invest on fixed deposit @3.25% pa as against 18.5% in TB

If i have 50m and sign fin for 50m, you will return 10m to my account and use it to run your packages at the bank while i wait for the maturity of the other.
If i have 40m and sign in for 50m, u will return my 40m and out of frustrations, i will leave the money in the account while u use it to run ur packages at the bank.

how on earth can somebody invest 40m at 20% and the person gets 60m. even if the calculator is faulty.

Yes they can. All u need to do is to send mail to your account officer asking him or her of any TB for secondary mkt and rate.
Also remember that there is no bidding day here as it was in primary mkt.
