InyinyaAgbaOku:Igbos don't lead in education. Most Yoruba people of my generation are sending their children off abroad to study in world class Universities. That is what JAMB statistics don't tell you. |
igbodefender:He had been trying nonsense secretly. We found out before it was too late. |
7lives:They have forgotten how Azikiwe dumped Awolowo who advised him to take the post of the Prime Minister while Awolowo settles for the post of finance minister, to go form alliance with Sir Ahmadu Bello ,which enabled the northerners to take the Prime Ministership while the northerners made him a figurehead governor general who have no real authority. His hatred for Awolowo and Yoruba people cost the Igbos the opportunity to first rule Nigeria. Let any Igbo refute this!. |
Marcelo290:What do you know. The lies they told you at home to infect you with hate for Yoruba people, just the same way Ojukwu kept lying to the Igbos that Ibadan had been captured by the Biafrian forces when he was actually preparing to flee the country. Most of what you people have been taught about us are pure lies. They were meant to keep hatred in your hearts against us because of the outcome of the civil war. |
bounty007:You people thought we are slaves because you consider yourselves as one. Afterall, you are the ones who calls Nigeria a zoo, and you people one of the animals in it. |
After the 2015 presidential election which Buhari won, most Yoruba people I know were saying, it should be the Igbo peoples turn after Buhari. But with you people's attitudes towards people of other ethnic groups, who would want to consider an Igboman for the presidency. With Igbo people erroneously believing that people of other ethnic groups hates them, they will continue to act in ways that makes it difficult for them to flow with people of other ethnic groups which is not good at all. Igbos should stop insulting us with their revisionists history on Nairaland. It is very rare for a Yoruba to write anything about the Igbos on nairaland but in response to numerous and relentless attacks which are usually untrue. For as long as you people continue attacking us, then expect our response. |
bounty007:Igbos inferiority complex towards Yorubas makes them refer to us as northern slaves. Take a good look at us. We don't cry marginalisation like you people do. We deal with our own problems and challenges without launching attacks on people of other ethnic groups. You people should learn to show respect for others. |
InyinyaAgbaOku:Revisionists history again. There was never a time in history when Igbos were more educated than Yorubas. That was why we scored most of the firsts in social, economic and political achievements at the time and even now. |
tawa89:Hahahahahahehehe! Who needs the love of northerners. Every tribe in Nigeria are traveling SW to have a bite of our prosperity and generosity, and you are here talking nonsense. By the way, who is crying for love in Niigeria. Who is complaining of not being loved all the time by northerners. Is it not the Igbos who want to secede because they claim Yorubas and the North hate them! Bach to history. Disprove what I have written. |
InyinyaAgbaOku:The north at that time don't have many of their people educated. Yoruba people also generally don't travel out of Western region as they are generally happy living in their own home country. So it's understandable for Igbo people to fill up positions in the north. We are talking about Western region of Nigeria, the indigenous homeland of Yoruba people, with the highest number of educated and qualified personnel for any position whether public or private at that time. Please tell me how Igbos who were less than 5% of the population of a more educated westerners at the time be snapping up all the positions. It is on record that Awolowo complained about what was going on at the time, but he was shut down. It is also on record that Ojukwu threatened the Northerners with Igbo domination shortly before the incidences that led to the civil war, drawing the ire of Ahmadu Bello and other northern leaders, all because they occuppied most of the federal civil service positions in the north at the time. I have written all of these, not because I hate Igbo people, but to emphasize the need for Igbo people to show respect to people of other ethnic groups, especially Yoruba people. Igbo people should stop insulting us on nairaland .Igbo people In many ways also contributed to the mess Nigeria is in today. |
igbodefender:The Yoruba people have never at any time regretted their decision to dump Azikiwe after they learn about his antecedents, which only bode an uncertain future for them. |
igbodefender:When they learnt of his secret dealings and evil intentions to subjugate Yorubas to the Igbos, they kicked him out! Azikiwe's nepotism was an open secret at that time. |
OGHENAOGIE:You people live on revised history. Awolowo, Jakande, Bisi Onabanjo, Enahoro, Amino Kano etc were all members ofNCNC until Azikiwe pushed them out with tribalism. Do your research . |
igbodefender:Olodo! You don't know history. This is what I've been saying. People with no knowledge of our national history perpetrating revisionists history. |
stev120:Did you at all read Igbo people response to Pa Unongo interview. Did you also realise that an Igbo person actually set up the post and with only one purpose in mind- to malign and cast aspersions on the character and dignity of Yoruba people. Do you expect us after all these to just keep quiet, knowing that everything being said on this respected forum is documented for future references. For as long as our Igbo brothers will not stop to continue to paint us in bad light on this forum, we will never stop to continue to defend ourselves. We will continue to put the record straight. |
FisifunKododada:We Yorubas have avoided getting ourselves enmeshed in tribal politics. Other regions have always accused us of tribal politics based on revisionist history. I urge on every Yoruba person to always rise up to debunk lies often told about us to malign our dignity on nairaland. |
This write-up is in response to the interview granted by the highly respected leader of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), Pa Unongo that the late sage, nationalist and former premier of the defunct Western Region of Nigeria ,Chief Obafemi Awolowo was responsible for the introduction of tribal politics in Nigeria. I wish to unequivocally state here that this is further from the truth. This is not to say that the elderstateman is a liar, as I believe he sincerely spoke based on the information available to him. We in the southwest who have a good sense of our national history have always known that the late Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe was never the nationalist many people had always wanted us to believe he was because of the many things he did in the then Western Nigeria which were unknown to many people. But we always tried to keep quiet about these things in order not to malign the memory of our great men and for the sake of peace and national unity. However, when a voice like that of the respected statesman comes casting us, the Yoruba people in bad light as a people responsible for tribal politics in Nigeria, we are left with no choice than to defend our name and integrity and set the record straight. First, Awolowo did not start tribal politics in Nigeria, Azikiwe actually did. It all started after Herbert Macaulay , a Yorubaman handed over the reins of the leadership of the National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroon (NCNC), Nigeria's first nationalist political party to Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, an Igboman without rancour. No tribalism. No sooner had Azikiwe took over the rein of the political party than he started filling all the strategic posts in the party with people with people from the Eastern region especially people of Igbo extraction. This essentially transform a once national party into an Eastern or Igbo party. In the process, Chief Obafemi Awolowo and his followers were forced out of a political party founded by a Yorubaland by an Igbo man . This was when the seed of tribal politics was sown by no other person but Azikiwe himself. The Action Group(AG) was founded by Awolowo as a result. Apart from the above incidence, Azikiwe was using his national political influence to fill most federal positions in the federal civil service mainly with Igbo people in nowhere else but Western Region. That was at a time when the Western region indigenous people, the Yorubas could conveniently field four for every one qualified candidates the Igbo people could muster. A case in point was when about 104 lecturalship positions was made available at the University of Ibadan, the capital if Western Nigeria, and Azikiwe used his influence to ensure that Easterners got 94 of the 104 positions. These and many other covert actions of Azikiwe in the Western region cost him the premiership as the Yorubas realized before it was too late that he could not be trusted. |

This was when the seed of tribal politics was sown by no other person but Azikiwe himself. T he Action Group(AG) was founded by Awolowo as a result. Apart from the above incidence, Azikiwe also inflicted the scourge of nepotism on Yoruba people on their own soil by using his powerful political influence to ensure that practically almost every vacancy in the civil service especially in the Western region was snapped up by easterners especially the people of Igbo extraction. They often claimed that it was because they were more qualified. But this was at a time when Yoruba people could conveniently field 4 for every 1 qualified personnel the Igbo people could muster. By the way, this was Yorubaland, not Igboland. A case in point was when some 107 lecturalship position came up in the newly formed University of Ibadan, and Azikiwe also used his power and political influence to help easterners snap up 94 out of the 104 positions. This actually happened in Ibadan, the capital of Western region in Yorubaland. This unfortunate nepotism pushed Awolowo to expedite action on the establishment of the University of Ife in a desperate bid to prevent Igbos from marginalizing and dominating us in our own land. Also Awolowo established so many industrial estates all over the Western region as answer to Igbos nepotism in the civil service to provide jobs for Yoruba graduates who could not secure employment in the civil service due to Igbo nepotism and marginalization of Yoruba people in their own land. This and many other covert actions or sins of Azikiwe cost him the Western region premiership as the Yoruba people came to the realisation before it was too late that Azikiwe could not be trusted . |

Totit Thanks for the data. |
Blue3k:We are not there yet, but I can assure you that our non oil export especially Agriculture is growing massively. We are now earning more foreign exchange from agriculture than at any other time. The percentage of oil based forex earnings is gradually reducing and a lot of new efforts at non oil forex earnings are coming up. |
With improvement in power supply and railways, we can easily double, triple, or even quadruple the size of the Nigerian economy thereby reducing dependence on oil based forex. By that time, the rest of Nigeria would be in better financial position than those crying about oil now. The west and the northerners know this. That is why they are bidding their time about restructuring while they develop their agriculture which is growing massively. Today, Nigeria is the 5th largest Agricultural country in the world (google it if you have doubts). Oil will dry up in 20 years time. Ask Kachikwu if you don't believe. Many nations of the world are planning to phase out patrol cars very soon. Continue to cry oil while other regions are strategizing for the future. |
nengibo:If Governor Wike is spending those moneys on infrastructure as he should, he couldn't have been no 1. This study does not represent spending on infrastructure. But savings or unspent money which could be stolen later. |
WinningSun:That's a big lie. Oil is just 10% of the Nigerian economy. Google it if you have doubts. Massive importation is the problem. It is preventing us from producing what we need at home. We need to ban more imported products to encourage local manufacturers. We also need to encourage more non-oil exports in order to reduce dependence on oil based forex. |
pasol4real:Ode! Your governors are saving your state funds for 2019 elections. |
pasol4real:Olodo! This study is about states that keep their money in the banks instead of spending them on the people. Southwestern states don't keep much money in savings because they are spending them on education and infrastructural developments. |
OBAGADAFFI:Don't be disappointed. This study does not represent levels of developments taking place in each state. In the Southwest generally, the respective state governments are taking on several capital projects at the same time such that they have to struggle between completing the projects and paying salaries of civil servants. This is why states that are doing very little as far as capital projects are concerned can rank higher than those doing a lot of capital projects because they simply focus on paying salaries of civil servants. The truth is that Lagos is doing more infrastructure than Rivers or any other state in Nigeria. Also my state, Ogun as well as Osun to the best of my knowledge are doing a lot of infrastructures than most of the states ranked ahead of them in this study. |
istandfortruth:Igbo marginalized themselves. They don't know how to relate well with people of other ethnic groups. It is not uncommon for them to issue threats to their host communities. They lack tacts. They don't know how to form alliances with other people groups. A case in point was in 1960 when the late Sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo in coalition with Chief Azikiwe asked him to take the post of Prime Minister while Awolowo settles for the post of finance minister.. What did Azikiwe did. He ditched Awolowo to go form alliance with Sir Ahmadu Bello, where they made him the ceremonial president while the northerners took the Prime Ministership, thereby relegating Azikiwe to the background in the scheme of things. It is sad that Ibo people are still making the same mistakes today while blaming everybody else except themselves for their political and economic misery. |
BakireBulmaker:Foolish laugh. Yoruba people are busy solving their own problems at state levels while you people are busy wasting precious time doing st*pid laughs. |
Why are you Igbo people always thinking backwards. Jonathan was corrupt and incompetent and we voted him out. If Buhari fails to perform, we vote him on as well. Please what is the problem with that. Only fools would wish for the likes of Jonathan to continue to rule this country after all the economic carnage that took place under him. We must continue to give chance to new people to rule until we get it right. |
DrGoodman:Shut your trap there! We organized prayer for the President recovery and return. We do not hate the president though we are not confortable with some of his decisions especially with regards to Federal appointments. However, what matters to us Yorubas is that we can get federal approvals to solve our problems by ourselves including federal ones at state levels. This previledge we were denied by the Jonathan Administration. |
DrGoodman:What you Igbo people don't know is that a lot of infrastructure is being developed in the southwest as we speak in the areas of Agriculture, Power, Hospitals, Roads and railways. While others are developing their areas by focussing on their state governments, you people are abandoning your state governments in the southeast to do with your state resources as they will, only to come crying marginalization later. You people need to be wise. |
Ereolamide:The problem with you Igbo people is that, you are constantly focussing on the centre. This is unlike the Yoruba people who are constantly demanding performance from their state governments, which also include state government repair, maintainance and construction of Federal infrastructures. On the average, you see more road constructions in the Southwest than in any other region in Nigeria especially Federal roads done by the respective state governments of the Southwest. It is only Governor Fayose that is not doing Federal roads. We the Yorubas have decided long before now to not let Northerners tendency to cheat on other ethnic groups to affect us. This explains why we don't cry marginalization unlike you people. |
