Hi guys

I need your help. An agent filled a wrong info for a tourist visa stating that my brother was living in US which was not accurate.

I found out on the day of the interview. It's about 4 years now.

Right now I've applied for a student visa which I filled correctly stating that I don't have relative in US.

I want to find out if my previous record with them won't affect my present interview .

The funniest thing is that my brother name that was used then now work with the embassy here in Nigeria for like 2years now.

how can I present my case properly if they refer to my previous record.
There’s really not much you can do tbh, other than be upfront and honest with the VO’s about the mistake. I’m guessing you had proceeded for the interview and defended that information as though you have a relative in the US and then got denied.

There’s no way it won’t show up in your new interview and it’s definitely a huge red flag.

But then what God cannot do does not exist. Good luck!

Good day everyone; I know this is slightly unrelated. But is there anyone here who needs or knows anyone who needs Naira? I’ve got some Naira in my bank account in Nigeria.. need someone that needs it in exchange for the dollar equivalent here. Instant transfer; and we can do the whole transfer on live video too. Please let me know. Thanks

In as much as you tried to make sense, you still made some inaccurate assumptions and quoted some unfounded statistics.

Who told you only people that can't afford US tuition come to nairaland to ask questions? I received one of the best academic advice and made one of the best academic decision of my life based on the advice BigFrancis21 gave me 15 months ago. And mind you the advice came after I asked a supposedly "obvious" question.

And which survey did you carry out before you concluded that 99% of peeps on nairaland do not have the means to get graduate degrees in the US? Do you know how many people on this thread have concluded their US graduate studies and how many peeps here are in school right now. The stat would shock you my friend.

How would a VO know if someone is from nairaland from a one, two or three minutes interview? Interview questions have a "generic" path the answers follow, so why you out here ostracizing people that come here to do research and prepare for their interview? You are not a VO sef, so no need to dwell on this point

Who told you everyone need $60k to get US graduate degree?? and you even called it on a very cheap side. WTF. And yes the US embassy can mail banks to verify at least the closing balance of an account statement. They have their customized mail address system and banks would respond to such mail.

Please let us verify the "facts" we post here as they have a huge impact on people's life. You would not know the effect it has, but it always have.

Warm regards
I didn’t make inaccurate assumptions. There’s a reason Nigeria is known for high number of visa holders who either don’t stay in status or refuse to return upon expiration of visa.

That is why I said 99% and not 100%. However u want to slice it, a good number of people here just want a better life (which is not a crime). Hence the different means and method to get F1 visa, get to US and try to disappear into thin air.

However I mentioned those that can afford it but don’t come on here to ask obvious questions.

And as for the $60k it’s a random estimate I made, which like u pointed out may not be accurate. But how many people in Nigeria right now can afford to spend $20k on further education with true intentions to return to Nigeria.

And finally, if I was a VO (after reading tru dis thread) and during the course of interview I start getting response like ‘I found the school on usnews.com, the school program aligns with my career interest, or my uncle who my father trained is sponsoring me’, I won’t need to scratch my head to know this person is from nairaland.

I feel one big problem we have as a country or as a people is seeing the obvious truth but shying away from it.

Anyways we both made our point. We agree to disagree.

smiley

Hey, how’s everyone doing. Noticed the issue of statement of account being verified is causing a lot of rancor. And some people think embassies now have the right to verify acct balance and what not. Like someone rightly pointed out, the only thing the embassy can confirm is if the statement originated from the bank I.e it’s genuiness as per the Acct no. Name, and other on the surface details. No one has authority to confirm ur balance and transaction history.

For those who got approved and later denied, it’s just fate. Pray harder and refire. All this conspiracy theory is funny. Fact is the figure for visa applicants have tripled, so anyone can be denied for any convenient reason.

And another thing, if I were a VO, and I settle down to read this thread, I can easily tell from the response I get if an applicant is from nairaland or not; and the truth of the matter is 99% of people on here do not have the means to get graduate degree in the US, I mean, with the way naija is, how many people can afford to spend $60k(which is even on a very cheap side). Those that can afford it belong to a very small circle and they don’t usually come on here asking obvious questions. At most they read in silence and go for their interview and kill it.

Preparation is important But like I said. PRAYER IS THE KEY! Before u ask me to what, let me answer ——> to a US VISA!!

Shalom!

VO; When did you finishyour first Degree?

Bro, you had pharmacy as ur first degree, you’re definitely switching. You can make your point to the VO, give a more attractive reason behind your switch. But don’t say you’re not switching when clearly you’re . Yould be awarded with MBA, so that’s a switch. A not so friendly VO May see that as a reason to deny you.

Chidon360:
MY PROPOSED TRANSCRIPT
will be going for interview soon. Please the gurus in the house , read and correct my flaws.

Me--- Good morning sir/ma
Vo. Good morning pass me ur passport & I-20
Me ...I did

Vo.....I can see you have been here before, why were u denied?
Me.... I don't know because the visa officer didn't tell me specifically why he denied me but told me to reapply.

Really? Let’s even assume u don’t know. So you’re really going to tell the VO u don’t know why u were denied? Means you haven’t done your homework. At least a paper was handed to u. Did u bother reading it?
..............................
VO..So Where are you going?
Me...Am going to Prairie View A&M university to do my Msc degree in General Engr. with concentration in *Construction management*
.........................
Vo..why construction management?
Me.... having worked with a construction firm for some years now, where I am involved in planning, cost estimating, coordinating , organising & supervision of construction works, I discovered that Building failure & project abandonment is one of the major challenges facing the construction sector of Nigeria, and me going for this degree will definitely give me more knowledge & skills to be a good project manager upon my return to Nigeria to promote safety & efficiency in the construction industry here in Nigeria.
...................................
Vo.....how many schools did u apply & how many admits?
Me.... 3 schools namely-: PVAMU, ETSU & Oregon state University and got admitted in PVAMU and OSU.

Vo... So why did u choose PVAMU?
Me....I chose PVAMU because the department currently houses the center for research in structural & environment sustainablity and this aligns with the area of my research interest, and 2ndly the tuition fees is quite affordable compared to other schools i applied & meets my Dad's budget for my education.
..............................

What research? Try to be specific

Vo....what's ur high school degree & when did u graduate?

‘High school’ u mean university right? Coz below u talked about ur BSC. Hopefully it’s a mistake and if it isn’t, take note.

Me... I have a Bsc in quantity surveying at IMO state University and graduated in 2013 but the degree was awarded in 2014 due to ASUU strike which lasted upto a year.

Unnecessary verbosity. Not sure the VO is interested in how ASUU strike delayed the date on your certificate. Pick a year, 2013 or 2014 and stick with it.
..................................
Vo...what have u been doing since then?

Me...After my compulsory 1 year national service in 2015, I was retained in the construction company where I served for my place of primary assignment as the assistant cost estimator & construction manager.
.….............................
Vo...Did u write any exam?
Me...yes, I wrote GRE.
VO...Let me see the result sheet
Me....I brought out the result and pass to her, then I will tell her that my scoring low (282) in the exam was because i didn't prepare well for the exam due to my work schedule as i go to work even on Saturdays & return very late, though having met with the requirements of the schls, I was offered admission.

Another round of unnecessary verbosity. Needless. You wrote the test and got the admission. What’s the point of ur explanations
..............................
Vo...what's your degree plan like?

Me...the course is scheduled to last for 21 months, (approximately two years)and I have to complete a total of 33 unit credit hours and maintain a minimum of 3.0GpA prio to graduation in the following courses÷
1.cost management of the construction process- 3Chr
2. Innovation in construction - 3Chr
3. Sustainability facility system -3Chr
4. Sustainability infrastructural system- 3Chr
and etc.

...................................
Vo..so who is ur sponsor and what does he/do?
Me...My father, and he's works in XYZ company
And also owns a Large Bookshop in Munshi , where he did supplies to top private schools in mushi & Ikeja area of Lagos.

Vo...your Visa has been approved.
Me...Amen ooo

Pls read , critisise and point out my flaws. Looking foward to hearing from everybody*
I wish u luck. I hope u have enough time to say all you planned to say. Reading your transcript I can smell how uptight and nervous u r. Relax, trust yourself and have a conversation with the VO. Trust me they like it that way

Its not everyone that passes exam that knows how to teach, you can liken that to those who got their visa. So if the information given to you is helpful, thank the person and don't use because they are still in Nigeria and take what they say less serious.

I believe most times some who are not yet in the US do more research than those who are in the US already cos' they might not have the enough time and the aspiration anymore i.e when aspiring you do more research i guess and tend to understand things better .for instance, I was gisting with a brother who had been in the U.S for the 3 yrs now he told me if you're not Age 17 one might not be admitted (is this true)?
Well, that’s a way to look at it. I’m just amused by the audacity some guys use to pass across their message. No iota of humility, you’ll think they live next to White House and they were signatories to the US immigration laws. Anyways I don’t think there’s any age requirement as regards admissions into school, age might only come into play at the point of interview if the VO decides to factor in a sequence of the applicants growth curve. At the end of the day visa interview is highly subjective, so no hard and fast rule to it.

It’s kinda funny coz I just noticed most people that give advice about what’s going on in the US on this thread are those guys living somewhere in Lagos. Went to the profiles of lots of the ‘gurus’ here and it so happened that they’re still Somewhere in Naija. I thought to be able to advise, you should have a clear idea (from experience) about what you’re advising on... this is indeed a faceless forum. Bottom line, know who you take advice from. Some people have absolutely no idea what they’re talking about on here. And most times, what you’re looking for is something a google search will give u, and even more.

How is applying to one school a mistake? You can tell someone to apply to more than one school to boost their chances, but it’s not a mistake applying to one schl. For scholarships GRE may come in handy, but GRE would not get you an on-campus employment. What will get you an on campus employment is your resume and how well you sell yourself if invited for an interview.
I don’t know how hard it is for us to paint the true picture, all this generic conclusions on the true state of affiars irks me. Everything will keep looking like rocket science, when u get visa you’ll realize it’s not even half as serious and people make it seem here. It is well. Happy Labor Day cheesy

kenzygist:
Please don't make this mistake of applying to only one school... Apply to more than one school and take at least one standardized test, GRE preferably. These will definitely increase your chances of getting your visa approved. GRE also give you the opportunity to scholarships and on campus employment, don't miss it.

You people are funny with all this choice of school bullcrap. His transcript went well, and by now I think it should be obvious that sometimes all you need is another trial, so are you suggesting he should go change school, and change his narrative thereby risking a possibility of complications. As long as your school is accredited, and you damn well know what you’re doing, one or two trials is enough to get a visa. Stop with the unnecessary importance y’all attach to ranking. I’m sure if it’s about rankings, by now everyone will know that. Your school can be an Ivy League schl, which is a plus, otherwise all you need do is sell yourself. Like the VO said, try again, he should do so, be consistent and pray for some luck, Lobatan.

lalavita:
Your transcript was good, you responded well. Unfortunately your choice of school let you down. With your GRE scores, you can find a better quality programme with funding. Try again for Spring.

From Wiki;
American National University was formerly accredited by ACICS.

ACICS lost its status as recognized accreditor on December 12, 2016.[6] The university is approved to receive Title IV funding under a provisional Program Participation Agreement for 18 months beginning December 12, 2016 while it is seeking a new accreditor.

As of February 27, 2018 the Roanoke Valley Campus is nationally accredited by the Distance Education Accrediting Commission (DEAC) [7] The following sites are recognized as administrative sties by DEAC: Harrisonburg Campus, Charlottesville Campus, Lynchburg Campus, Princeton Campus, Parkersburg Campus, Bristol Campus and the Dayton Area Campus.

Good day everyone, just felt like posting few things on here. Coming to the USA is a first step in a right direction, dont let anyone tell you otherwise, however pls and pls have a plan. i am a newbie here, today marks my 43rd day, school is underway and i am trying to settle in, but trust me there are days frustration walks side by side with me.
I know for most (like myself) its all about greener pastures, but then HAVE A PLAN. be prepared, dont just get visa and come with barely 1000$ to your name. people do that all the time and say they will hustle it tru, you may (or not), but its an avoidable disastrous situation in the making. have plans that will cater for your needs for a minimum of 6 months. Coz to be honest, dem no dey share work for street, and as an F1 holder, you cant work (legally) and the school youre in may or may not have employment opportunities for you.
Again, dont think youre coming with the hope of relying on anyone, the friends family members (except its direct and immediate) you have would turn out more useless than useful (at lest 80% of the time). Be ready to be innovative and be ready to admit all youve got is yourself. Be independent (ask questions regardless), but plam for yourself such that you can stand on your two feet for as long as you become better submerged in the system. if youre coming with the hopes of the friend you have here without your own plans, sorrry you will most likely be disappointed. I have an elder brother here, who is more like my GEE, but i am charting my own path, i only ask for advice and directions from hom, i am not staying on his neck, we are not even in the same state (thats not to say we wont be linking up now and again).
Again, have a plan, go to school, if you wanna stay back, have a plan... have a plan.. even if you forget all i just typed, pls have a plan.. i mean a workable plan. the system wasnt exactly built to favor migrants or foreigners so youve to know youre swimming against the tide, as such u need extra push. its not easy, but its doable. its exciting after getting visa and many people get carried away with the harsh realities theyre coming tp face. have your money, for personal expenses, if youre rich enough get a car. Get a license, make sure you come with ur naija license as this will fast track your license (i aready have mine).
Good luck to the ones still on the hustle to get visa, and for those that have gotten theirs and will soon be here, pls have a plan. i am also a newbie, still finding my way around, no much friends (yet), very lonely sometimes... and to make matters worse i dont even know when next i am going to get laid (Tinder dey dull me grin) but i serve a living God, i know he will come tru for me.
have a great day everyone.

What we do here is to advise anyone to cover any potential loophole(s) and be as prepared as possible. There's no one sure way to securing a visa and all we encourage people to do is prepare as much as possible. People can come back after they get their visa and say: "I didn't even do this or that as I was advised on Nairaland". All you get here is what we think would boost your chance. It's taken for granted most times because it's free advice.

"You can't get a visa if you apply to one school, have no wife/kids, apply to an unpopular school, weird course, etc." is different from "try to apply to more than one school, a good school, take exams, etc.". You're only advised to do as much as possible to boost your chances.

For example, a man who wants to meet his girl's parents asks you for advice. You tell him to get a shave, dress well, and cut his hair when he's going to meet his in-laws to ask to marry their daughter. It doesn't mean he's doomed to fail if he doesn't do these. It's only an advice. Now, imagine the said man arriving there after following your advice.

Upon his arrival, the parents aren't home. He calls them and tells them who he is and why he's there. They talk on the phone for 30 minutes and the parents say "ok, you can marry our daughter". It'd be ignorant to blame you for having unrealistic standards because in the end, the things you said didn't matter.

I agree with you, everyone's case is peculiar and people deserve as many opportunities as possible as long as they don't screw it up by getting banned. My first visa interview lasted 39 seconds. I don't remember it much or if I even made any sense during it. In the end, I was approved and the rest is history.

Immigration lawyers give almost the same advise you get on online forums such as this and those guys charge thousands of dollars. Ordinary consultation, people are already paying $150+. Let's show appreciation. We are all trying to do better and help one another.

Congrats to you again. smiley
Point taken. I love your thought process and maturity. We should be friends. smiley. Thank you for being who your are!

it is a well documented mental case known as PVAGG (post VisaApproval Gra Gra) grin grin grin, in this state, the newly approved visa hopeful gets all philosophical when laying down their transcript for the rest of us that have not been to the embassy, they dish out advice, criticize the forum and disappear forever cheesy cheesy
This made me laugh. You don’t have to read the first part of my transcript out of context, however when you pass through a process and succeed at it, it’s just normal to drop some hints you feel may work for someone else.
That said, what I meant when I mention standards is just the fact that I feel a lot of hidden factors are always at work during the Visa process. Maybe My choice of words made it seem like I wasn’t making sense, but I read a lot and I read this whole thread from start to finish. Some responses are rude, harsh, insensitive, and some people make it seem like you’re doomed to fail if you applied to one school and didn’t write standardized exams. I think I read where someone was saying some schools are waste of time and all. I just feel everybody’s circumstance is peculiar and since this is a faceless forum, it’s better to give more tailored advices. Knowledge is power, and no one should take the information on this thread for granted (I didn’t), but no advice here will do more for anyone other than the personal effort you put towards living your passion.
Have a great evening everyone.

As much as I would have love to congratulate you boss, but telling us the name of your school and city will do you no harm instead you bleeped them out. The essence of putting your testimony here is for people to learn and at the same time get information and idea of schools to apply to and know the process.

Who knows, by you posting the name of your school, you might network with someone who is already in the school or who also just got admission to the school. That's what this forum is for. If everyone came here and bleeped out helpful information like you did, where will u be today? Giving back is giving back and not this way.

Congratulations still anyway.

I just want to drop this here to inspire a few people, never give up on your dreams, provided they are genuine and you know what youre doing. Whilst this forum is good, i think a lot of standards here is not really the true situation when it comes to visa and all that.

So i had my visa approved yesterday 7/5/2018 after getting denied barely 2 weeks ago 23/4/2018. i will post both transcipts below

first interview 23/04/2018 at the abuja visa office.

Me : good morning, how are you doing
vo : morning, pass your passport and I20 (i did so, he look at my course for a while), tell me in clear language about the MBA program at bleep university.
Me : told him about the course as much as i could, credit hours, core courses electives etc.
vo : how many schools did you aply to
me : just one
vo : so what are your post graduation plans
me : considering the fact that i own and run a haulage and logistic company alongside my day job, i believe this program will broaden my horizon and armed with an increased knowledge base, it will enable me come back home and place my company more strategically on the nigeria labor market
Vo: (nods head) who is your sponsor
me : my dad (he is paying only for my tution while i am taking care of living and personal expenses, but somehow i didnt say that)
vo : has he ever traveled out of the country bfore
mw : no he has not
vo : ok, so do you have a relative or friend in the united states and how many?
me : Yes, i have just one; an elder brother in the united states
vo: oh ok what does he do and where is he?
me : he is a student pharmacist, he lives in Boston MS.
vo : did you say student pharmacist?
(i nod in the affirmative), what school is he in?
me : (totally skipped, wasnt expecting the question, i couldnt remember the name of the school to be honest) errr i am sorry but i cant remember the name of the school.
vo: you mean you dont know the name of the school your brother is in? are you sure youre telling me the truth, if i look him up now will i confirm what yoyre sying?
me: go ahead and look him up.

vo: (types for a while) has he ever gotten married in the united states
me: yes he has
vo : (nods his head, types for a while and gave me the blue paper) thank you for your application, but at this time youre not qualified for a student visa.

i was sad, very sad, was wondering how my brothers status should be my business, anywasy fast forward to yesterday at the lagos embassy, te place was like a market, filled to the brim

vo: next applicant pls step forward
me: good morning
vo : good morning, pass your passport and I20 ( i did) so tell me how an MBA will help you
me: well considering the fact that i am an enterpreneur that owns a company i run along side my day job, i believe getting an mba will go a long way in boosting my portfolio, and it will help me restructure and place my company more strategically in the nigeria labor market
vo : (was typing all tru, suddenly looks up at me like i said something that caught her interest) so tell me about the requirements of this program, i mean the course and all that
me: i broke it all down to her in details (credit hours, duratin, talked about some course, etc)
vo: how many schools did you apply to?
me:i applied to jst one
vo : and why did you apply to jst one schl
me : the schol ticked some unique boxes for me, in the sense that they have a flexible calender, bleep university is actually one of the few grad schls that offer a summer start, and i reckon this will enable me acclimatize better before the cold weather starts, also the schl tution is considerably affordable, compared to some grad schls i looked at, furthrmre bleep university has a sizeable international student body, and this will allow me fraternize with people from different cultural heritage; all these is besides the fact that bleep is a great city, read a lot of good things on the internet.
vo : did you take any test?
me: no it was waived by the school
vo: do you have a relative or friend in the US
me: yea my elder brother (she asked what he does, told her hes a student pharmacist)
vo: what is your highest level of qualification
me : i have a LLB in public and international law
vo : oh ok, did you go to the law school?
me : yes i did
vo: when did you get this degree (told her 2014) and what have you been doing since then
me: after my degree, i went to the law school for a year, after which i went for the compulsory youth service, then i started working at an alternative dispute resolution firm in Abuja later that year, i then floated my company which i run alongside my day job.
vo : what does your company do
me : (explained to her, haulage logistics etc)
vo: what is your job description where you work
me : told her
vo: who is sponsoring you
me : my dad is paying for my tuition while, i am taking care of my living and personal expenses, i have been able to save up enough for that.
vo: do you have any document to show in this regards, for both of you
me: yes and i handed her both SOA
vo: (kept typing, looked at the docs for a while, passed back mine to me first, then kept looking at my dads and typing) is this your dads personal account or business account (told her its personal) whats your dads name (told her) continued typing then passed it back to me, continued typing, then she looked up and said the magic words,) gave me the white paper and told me ild recieve a text and all

All in all, i still believe prayer is the key, my interview lasted close to 4 minutes, plenty talk, i just tried to break it down small here. be confident, be fluent, and be firm. but pray pray pray like its all that matters, and be prepared too. shallom!

grin grin key to student visa...Prayer without adequate preparation and planning is failure
Lol. If you had spared just a micro second to read my response, Yould see where I emphasized on preparations. I still maintain the fact that right now, with the amount of people trying to obtain a visa, the issue of how genuine you believe you are can only boost ur chances by less than 10%. Prayer is the key. Not necessarily to a US visa though, but it is the key to making all other indices outside of your control during your interview work in your favor. *drops mic*

“The conversation was ok. Whilst some people will come and analyze the many things they believe is wrong with your transcript. From experience I have come to realize getting a visa is most likely an issue of discretion of the VO, and luck as well. It wasn’t your day. Don’t let nobody tell you it’s about the fact that you ain’t married or have kids blah blah blah. I’ve seen people will better or worse profile get denied or approved accordingly. This is not to say preparation is not necessary. But again a lot of indices come into play Before getting a US visa. Prayer is the key. My 2 cents.”
