Sudan conflict: Army and civilians seal power-sharing deal

Sudan's ruling military council and civilian opposition alliance have signed a landmark power-sharing deal.

The agreement ushers in a new governing council, including both civilians and generals, to pave the way towards elections and civilian rule.

Mohamed Hamdan "Hemeti" Dagolo, widely regarded as Sudan's most powerful man, has pledged to abide by its terms.

Sudan has seen pro-democracy protests and repression since long-time ruler Omar al-Bashir was ousted in April.

The deal was signed by Hemeti and Lt-Gen Abdel Fattah Abdelrahman Burhan for the military council, and Ahmed al-Rabie for the Alliance for Freedom and Change umbrella group of pro-democracy protesters.

The prime ministers of Ethiopia and Egypt and the South Sudanese president were among regional leaders attending ceremony.

There were scenes of wild celebrations on the streets of the capital, Khartoum, after the ceremony.

Thousands of cheering people gathered around the convention hall where the documents were signed, waving Sudanese flags and flashing peace signs.

Khartoum residents and people from other parts of the country came in on buses and trains for the occasion.

Under the deal, a sovereign council, consisting of six civilians and five generals, will run the country until elections.

The two sides have agreed to rotate the chairmanship of the council for just over three years. A prime minister nominated by civilians is due to be appointed next week.

What did Hemeti say?

"We will stick to every single letter we have agreed on," Hemeti told the BBC's Zeinab Badawi in an interview broadcast ahead of the ceremony.

"Even without the agreement, we [would] have to work in this direction because it's in the country's interest," he added. "Therefore we have to carry out the agreement, stick to it and support it."

Hemeti is the commander of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) - which grew out of the notorious supporter of APC militia that was accused of carrying out a genocide in the Darfur region of western Sudan .

Many people stood outside the RSF headquarters in central Khartoum, playing revolutionary songs and chanting at soldiers in celebration, Reuters news agency reports.

The RSF have been blamed for recent abuses, including the 3 June massacre during which more than 120 people were reportedly killed, with many of the dead dumped in the River Nile.

RSF leaders have denied planning the killings, which they say were carried out by rogue elements.

Asked about the massacre in the BBC interview, Hemeti said there had been "systematic plotting and conspiracy" to tarnish the reputation of the RSF, whom he described as "protectors" and not killers.

How did the crisis unfold?

The unrest in Sudan can be traced back to December 2018, when then President Bashir's government imposed emergency austerity measures.

Cuts to bread and fuel subsidies sparked demonstrations in the east over living standards, and the anger spread to the capital.

The protests broadened into demands for the removal of Mr Bashir - who had been in charge for 30 years.

In April, the president was overthrown by the military after sit-ins outside the defence ministry, but demonstrators then wanted to ensure authority was swiftly transferred to a civilian administration.

A council of generals led by Lt-Gen Abdel Fattah Abdelrahman Burhan assumed power, but it has struggled to return the country to normality.

The army is not a unified force in Sudan; paramilitary organisations and various Islamist militias hold some sway.

Politics / Pdp Or Apc by Robgeo1(m): 4:47pm On Aug 16, 2019
The party is a place where people come together for the main purpose of becoming elected. Election and the process of election has become a do or die affair why because the politicians do not believe in election. If you did not win the court is there but most politicians will not use these means of peaceful resolution no! Rather they feel I not you won! PDP is well known both in Nigeria and in the diaspora same with APC. But rather than lets unite and pilot the affairs of our country political 3rd world war is on!!!!! In the court trust in ruling is no longer the norm but the might of blackmail and intimidation mixed with betrayals and culminating in assassinations of percieved enemies. Is this politics? The common man is coerced into voting for the person he did not even think of for fear of being lynched by irate youths who are keeping close watch on the elections. This is not election but a test of who can force self on the people!!!!!!

Robgeo1:
It is a contagious dilemma that constantly greets the accademic world to which several methods have been sought to cure this infectious disease in the students and lecturers involved. Like the sun that rises and sets so does exam malpractice rise and fade but the question is what is the cure? To understand what is the cure is to know first what is the cause. Like the wise man once said a corrupt tree gives birth to corrupt fruits but today we attack the fruits and spare the tree? A lecturer tells his students read study learn and do my assignments but when you submit it, make sure you put 1000 or 2000 or 5000. Is this not the genesis of the book of corruption? This wicked people call this monies they charge wonderful names that include: lamp, passport, torch, anointing, and so forth.
When a student struggles to pay his school fee only to meet another fee that the school authority has not approved but is unofficially aware because shockingly from findings so far made, the disciplinary body set up to look in and check such illegality is made up of those same lecturers who run those pay and pass cartel. Hardly do you find a lecturer who is not directly or indirectly involved in the unwholesome practice. There exists lecturers who have not eaten from that table this I believe but finding them is not easy for the task is like looking for a needle in a hay stack. Since many are involved how do we end it? My suggestion hence is students should be made part of the disciplinary body. Stiff laws should be enacted. Jail terms handed offenders be they the touchable or untouchable class notwithstanding. Lecturers and students who consciously walk into the exam malpractice web should be tried by exam bodies of the school comprising of students lecturers religiouseaders and reputable legal practitioners publicly to serve as a deterrent to upcoming and already practicing exam malpractitioners and jail term should not be less than ten years because this should be regarded as a rape of the accademic world and offenders should be treated as criminals. If this is done, crime rate I believe will drop if no totally but very significantly. Thank you. I'll be back with more ideas for solution to this embarrassment that is greeting the academic world for suggestions you can call me on 08140119055 or +2348140119055.

Independent people of Biafra.
It is a pitiable pisma pisma that a country as blessed like Nigeria is still not united. Ipob is an unanimous unbiased non militant solution that Nnamdi Kanu is presenting to people and well wishers in the east. War and rancorous incursion will not lead us any where. Rather it will torpedoe our main intention to create a country where man is not marginalised by another. We see that In Nigeria of today that is not the destination of our democracy, sad to say and I must say this: our democracy has become a vehicle of self promulgation and protection and at the same time relegating the other man as a 2nd and 3rd class citizen. This demonic destruction incurs dastard.regrets. Nnamdi kanu has witnessed and is a living witness to civil war and it's disastrous outcomes that is why he I believe is not towing nigeria but educating biafrans both within and in the diaspora on the evils that our meticulous and wonderful Odumegwu Ojukwu's short sightedness caused when he without shear indepth education of his followers jumped to actualize his dream of biafra. One may say why call Ojukwu short sighted! That may sound sacrilegious. I tell u He was a trained sandhurst army graduate. What Im saying is if your people are not trained and your vision properly communicated when you set out there will be anarchism as the weight of confusion due to ignorance sets in and the leader will be the scapegoat. This is why I insinuate he was shortsighted! This Nnamdi kanu is aware of and does not want to use civil war as no country survives a civil war two times rather he being an aristocrat He avoids flash points with even his supporters and townsmen. I will give you more update. You can also call me on 08140119055 or+2348140119055.
