IAMMUIC: I made a similar post i tagged: "The Average Nigerian's music perception" on my blog https://blarckbillboard./2016/06/14/the-average-nigerians-faulty-conception-of-music/
Well, in a bid to answer ur question i would start by saying you cant really blame most Nigerians for their choice of music. The problem as to why Nigerians prefer a certain kind of music is psychological. The Nigerian society is filled with people with undeveloped music minds. Am sure you will agree with me that the sought of music a learned man would prefer, lets say a professor who has been opportuned to live outside the shores of Nigeria and the sought of music a carpenter would prefer wont be same. There's a possibility that the professor would prefer classical music while the carpenter may on the other hand prefer a more local sound. The reason is, while the intellectual could relate with such sounds as classical music and its kind, the less intellectual couldn't.
Secondly, you must also understand that Nigerians and Africans in diaspora have an affinity with drum beats, that is, danceable songs. Anything that also fails to fall within this category falls short. Hmmmm.... Insightful. But at least, we should grow tired of hearing the same thing being re-packaged over and over again... and I could accept the beats explanation, but what do you have to say about lyrical content? I particularly loved your article and it's opening words... After absorbing myself in Jon Bellion’s recent Album: The Human Condition, I felt I had achieved a heightened state of music consciousness. In my liberality I considered sharing one of the most impressive songs from the album with a Childhood friend of mine. One minute after playing the song from his phone I notice a frown on his face, a sure sign of discontent. He takes off his ear-phones slowly, turns to me and says “this song no sweet jare, e wohn make me sleep”. He immediately deletes the song from his phone. |

Er.... A little introduction would help your understanding. I love music alot. It is what keeps me going in my everyday life which is spent mostly alone. From inspiration to encouragement, to sadness, getting High... And even love! There's a song for all. Not to talk about the boss of all... Gospel! (gospel fans in da' house throw yo' hands up! #not ashamed) And so, suddenly I start having friends, and there goes the "can I check out your Playlist..." and the familiar face of disgust! "Dude, we're in the 21st century men! Who listens to all these ) OK fine! I tried sampling most of the music making waves in the country (apologies for being non-chalant to art made in me country! ) and I discovered yet again.... Things haven't changed! Same old, same old! - - - - - >"Money-Girls-Sex" And then I go on to chechout the awards given to artists in the country... And those junk get to win awards... Wtf. To the extent, a drunk Olamide went on stage to cause a scene for one of his acts.... OK, lemme see what's with this Lil-Kesh of a guy.... Google search.... Ah! Same old... Same old! So I don't understand. Is it that artists now live for today? Never caring about the content? Or are the likes of Timi Dakolo, Asa, MI, Darey... etc... Fools for keeping things real? Every piece of music out there is the same! Same beat! Same lyrics! Same kinda music video! And same kinda audience! I thought about Iyanya, Chidinma, Praize, Banky-W, Tiwa Savage and every other artists who were opportuned to learn at the feets of Grand-masters.... And I saw no difference, even when I expected one... I don't need to go too far though.... A stroll to the music section of Nairaland would convince any neutral mind that it's "same old, same old" or how does repeating 'you're such a diva 8x equal a song ? " Oh well... Y'all pardon my rant! I've got a 4-credit load course to write tomorrow, so I just had to type this without thinking. So to my question.... Why is our music the way it is? What is this one saying? mickeyenglish: The poster of this stuff must be a new born baby or rather a fool... How does that reggae ragga looking man look like a "cele"? . My problem with some people is that they don't bother to carry out adequate research on some things before publicly displaying their stupidity. First of all, that guy is on shoes or sandals, do cele members put on sandals? Secondly, that'd garment has no affiliation with a cele garment, I wonder which type or denomination of cele puts such thing on as garment. I don't know what cele has done to you and your family, Celestial members don't go door-2-door to preach the gospel of Christ like the Jehova witness fellas, neither have they threatened to kill you and your family if u don't join their church, they also don't go out canvassing or "going a fishing" for new members? Or have they ever gate-crashed any of ur celebration before? Or have u ever seen them in a place where they were not invited? The answer is NO because They are always on their lane doing their own thing on their own soil. Have u ever had any cele leader partaking in the "National cake" or ever caught a leader flaunting private Jets and jewelries? this people mind their business and also expect u to do the same? Nawaoo! I can only come to one conclusion, which is ur intentions to start an unnecessary church denominational war here. A common earthling of hypocritical origin. BTW, Which church do u even attend ? .....
And if they light one stick of candle on top ur matter now, them go say Dem too Dey fetish. Dem no go remember say "trouble wey Dey sleep jeyjey, na yanga go wake am up"!

Teempakguy: You must be joking you think courses like astrophysics, solid state physics, computational fluid dynamics, nanotechnology, quantum chromodynamics Nuclear physics and high energy experimental physics can be learned "on your own."? , bros, abeg, where will you find the particle accelerators? where will you get X-ray machines and radioisotopes? where will you get crystalline specimens? where will get electron microscope? where will you get extraterrestial full spectrum microscopes? where will you get mass spectrometer? Where will you get high energy lasers and masers? where will you get powerful supercomputing power?
Trust me, The only level at which self study is remotely possible within the realms of sanity is bachelors degree. and even that is wobbly. Despite the fact that I know a LOT of mathematics and physics, I'm still not qualified to call myself a physicist without the Lab courses.
So there you go. Who PhD help? people who are addicted to their course, but simply can't afford to buy ridiculously expensive equipment and who also realize that without a PhD, they won't be taken seriously in academia. even actual PhDs are struggling to get funding for research. Not to talk about one big head Bsc claiming he/she has "studied" the topic on their own. Obviously you missed the point I was trying to make. I said 80% of the knowledge you'd gain during the program would be from your own research and study! And that is true. As you don't see people doing even Masters program going to classes as if they were in 100lvl. Not to talk of PhD. What they do (from the little I've experienced here) is go home and, study and do research.... The job of their professors is to guide them through the phase. For those who've done it, they'd tell you most of what is done during 'class' is discussion on 'what you've been working on'... The remaining 20% is what you accounted for up there.. |

Teempakguy: trust me, no one can ever find out. I'm just that good.
Typical mindset of engineers.
There are minds that will be completely filled with the mediocre knowledge provided at bachelors degree level. And there are other minds. Only weak minds settle for mediocre knowledge. Agreed. But only someone like Teempakguy would fail to realise that 80% of knowledge gained during PhD.... are from personal research and study. . I could choose to drop-out from school and go on self education...if I follow the plan with all diligence, I could even become smarter than some folks with 'paper' . Think! |

Optimist1: In the beginning was the word, and the word was with God, and the word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by Him, and without Him was not anything made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness, and the darkness comprehended it not. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the light. That all men through him might believe. He was not that light, but was sent to bear witness of that light. That was the true light, which lighteth onto every man that cometh into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made by Him, and the world knew Him not. He came unto His own, but His own received Him not. But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, and even to them that believeth on His name. Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. And the word was made flesh, and dwelleth among us. (and as we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father) full of grace and truth, Amen.
For the Lord made them visible and invisible creatures. Therefore, my brethren, believe in His Son Jesus and embrace Him and your spiritual eyes will be opened to see all these powers of this dark world and the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.
For His Word says, my people perish because the lack knowledge. Therefore, come to Him the maker of everything both in heaven and on earth and He will open your spiritual eyes to begin to see these things you want to see. Sigh.... |

Unfortunately, He's lost his religion and he's trying to help his fans loose theirs too... I'm losing my religion Thank God I prayed about my decision How odd For the man with the mic To be the man all his life While Christ-like stipes did with REM Rev up the RPMs How do I begin to try to paint this sin, of rules? That divides God's people in two In the beginning, religion created a mask The reformation helped but soon the patch didn't last I don't tell, you don't ask So we created a lie And for generations, church was where we went to go hide Or we no longer tried Because rules read our relationship was empty inside Leaves you bitter, dry Swift to cut like a razor Swift to call you a traitor Cause you're swift to love Taylor Now we got bad blood with our neighbor Who's wrong, who's right Every Sunday we're divided Who's black, who's white, C'mon Now the man in the mirror never gets race right He'll never be Christ-like Never receive good pay So your faith never rises above minimum wage So when it's time to save the world You don't know what to say To your brother that you love when he tells you he's gay Do you push him away? Judge him down till he leaves? Give him a gospel he hears or a gospel he sees Love wrapped in truth is the gospel he needs There's room at the cross for everyone, even me Well my sins are now clean The loss now redeemed Religion is a prison but truth sets us free Helps us believe That the world we're in now is not the world that will be Terror, famine, disease Millions in poverty Hungry, can't sleep With all of this religion, why these babies can't eat? And if the middle class is gone, how can America see? How can America breathe? When the oxygen is gone from the American dream And these American streets listen close as they speak The next time you think America please include me Help the ones that are weak All they want is a piece Of the pie that you keep Is that too much to ask of those who lay the concrete? Still laying on concrete Pop, Pop by police See, they the foundation of the nation Not the 2% Not the ones that own the building that the middle class rent Because they make sense Tell me how do you feel? I'm the new Franklin and I have the new deal I fight and do right FDR for real One nation under God God, show us the way The science of opinion God is not a buffet You pick what you want so no God on your plate The preacher isn't God Religion's first mistake Serving stewards, shepherds, not kings Has to die to his flesh everyday like me One VIP All the other seats in church are free We're just groupies God's the celebrity Before 313 AD Before Constantine Before the council of Nacia Before Romans and Greeks Before Kalvin Alexander, Luther Before let there be Before history To the last century Before the death on the tree Before the fall of man Was a picture of me Nailed to his heart Right before the last three Words he would speak It is FINISHED Can you believe?
