Saridon_P. Abeg no vex for the late reply, I have not logged in for a while. My interest rate is 1.75%. Getting just over 270,000 per annum right now which is very low. I hope it improves soon but I have been very impressed with GTB so I am sure their fixed rates will improve as our economy gets out of recession. I work for an investment bank in London.

Hi Roforofo

Thank God you did not fall prey. I looking for partner investor to join me in a profitable start-up to be located in Lagos. I am currently in USA. We have a detailed project proposal about the project for your perusal if you are interested. Email at oparah.uche@yahoo.com
Thanks but I will have to decline your offer. I go to Nigeria every three years and I run all my business interests in Europe and America. I am not able to supervise a business back home in Nigeria at present as I live abroad. The funds GTB are to help pay for school fees for my relatives and provide scholarships for primary and secondary school students from poor families in my hometown.

Some maga tried to use my debit card in Nigeria but entered the incorrect PIN. GTB staff called me immediately in the UK to alert me. I have asked them to cancel my card although na just 500 Naira  I dey keep to run the account. I have a fixed deposit of 15 million with GTB so their staff say it might have been an inside job. My advice to those with large sums in Naija current accounts if you live abroad either move it to a fixed which cannot be accessed by debit card or if possible ask your Naija bank to block your card. You fit unblock am whenever you visit home. Make we show these magas say dem be mumus! grin

X-2-X . I should add that Citibank UK charged another £20 for routing the money so in total the transfer cost about £30. That is a small price to pay I think for sending £40,000 and you avoid the dfanger of carrying the cash with you from here into Naija. If you need any additional info just post on this thread.

Unfortunately our Presidency na to dey oppress and pretend, our Senators na dem dey nonsense us, the House of Reps na dem dey represent the thief thief, our local councillors na dem dey cancel us.

The Nigerian system is built and designed by the politicians to be corrupt. We on Nairaland can only observe and comment, unfortunately most of us are abroad so we can criticize from Mile 12 but dat will not change anything on the ground.  Again as Fela talk, na to dey Look and Laugh.

Legalize, regulate and tax. Simple really. Ensures the women are not coerced into the industry and not cheated by pimps. Also provide health education, access to condoms and treatment of STDs. Prostitution can [b]NEVER be eradicated and so we need to stop fooling ourselves. grin

Wherever you are in the world, work hard, be honest and hope things work out for you. Came to the UK 9 years ago and I absolutely love living here. Thankfully I have been successful and I am in a position to help out here and in Nigeria. Currently give full scholarships from primary school to university for 8 young family members in Nigeria. Working on a small charity to provide free medical care for all young children from poor families in my hometown. Also planning a project with the New Afrika Shrine in Lagos to provide full scholarships for talented youngsters who wish to learn to play Afrobeat in Nigeria. For all this I am grateful to the UK for giving me opportunities to be successful in my career and I certainly do not consider myself to be in SLAVERYcheesy

boy t:
For you guys who criticized Ojo for his local accent and unWestern ethics , i have a message you. A white man will always see you as Black  African no matter how you try to copy or pretend to be modern. That is why the white folks still regards the Middle Easterners and Asians to Africans, because the Asians and M.E  will not change their culture, food, religion, values interest or twist their tongue, to please a white man like the  9jaaas.
no matter the passport you carry, US or European 50 years resident overseas or more ,the white man still sees you as a Nigerian.
So stop follow- follow  mentality and be youselves.
I certainly am not criticizing Mr Maduekwe for his accent. I do not care about how he speaks and Nigerians do not owe it to anyone to speak with, as you put it "a twisted tongue". I think you are getting the issues mixed up. My disregard for Mr Maduekwe is the fact that he has been in successive governments that have failed ordinary Nigerians and continue to fail to provide basic needs. Blaming the West and white people for the failure of our leaders is just irrational and stupid. It is not the white man who keeps stealing billions of oil money and transferring to Swiss accounts like Abacha, Babangida, Obasanjo, Aikhomu, Alamieyeseigha, Anenih, Atiku, Ibori etc. We need to face facts. In terms of development and care for the citizenry of a country, the White man is LIGHT YEARS ahead of us. It is nothing to be ashamed of. What we need to do is learn from them and put in practice what they do in our own countries instead of moaning, complaining, comparing, blaming and doing nothing. Fela Kuti studied at the Trinity College of Music in London then returned home and used that knowledge in addition to his God given talent to create Afrobeat and fight for the masses. Like Fela himself said, " If you feel bad about it, do something about it. Forget oyinbo man and face your fellow black man in government in Africa wey dey kill, steal and loot, these are the Vagabonds In Power, VIP!!!"

cap28, your points are fair and correct BUT, it takes 2 to tango. The problem is equally shared between the western world  AND Nigeria. We cannot sit and pretend we are victims. The west take advantage of Nigeria, but the people in power have a good hand in it too. Please do not believe it is not a 2 way street. I understand all you mentioned about unfair trade and IMF loans and you are 100% correct, but remember the IMF loans were not spent on Nigerian Infrastructures or used in developing Nigeria at all. They were squandered by the ruling party. The conditions of these loans were negative, one of which was SAP (Structural Adjustement Programme) which was imposed by IMF. This was basically asking us to cut social expenditure and a host of other conditions that suited the west in our bid to pay back these loans (for example privatization and selling of govt owned industries and resources mostly to western countries, which was not good for Nigeria).

The UK, US etc. are corrupt countries, let us not pretend they are not, but they invest the basic infrastructure on their citizens i.e good roads, electricity, healthcare, education etc,  If 50% of Nigeria's revenue's were spent in Nigeria no one would complain as much.

I ask you a question, do you see a lot of Libyans around the world i.e as immigrants? Libya may not be the best friend of the west at the moment, but they invest their resources in their own country (yes, i know Ghadaffi is a tyrant). The quality of life in Libya is a lot better than most African countries.

All I am saying is that I am not naive enough to think the west is free of influencing and aiding corruption in Nigeria, but i want to look inward first and sort it out from Nigeria before we can look the west in the eye and say no to their negative influences.
Excellent response. I wish more people were as logical as you are when discussing Nigeria and Africa's problems. Too many of us get emotional and irrational instead of addressing the bitter and painful truth. Maybe it is too difficult for people to accept that our governments in Africa don't give a DAMN about the ordinary citizens. It seems Africans always find it easier to blame the West instead of admitting that our countries are ruled by incompetent THIEVES. Ojo Maduekwe is just another example of the incompetence and deceitfulness of so called African governments. But of course it is easier to blame the IMF and oyinbos for our problems!!! huh

cap28:
@kaymode i have some questions for you - why havent tony blair and george bush been prosecuted for war crimes for invading a sovereign nation under the fabricated story of saddam having weapons of mass destruction?

why was the investigative journalist who tried to expose a fake dossier prepared by tony blair's "director of communications" sacked when he tried to expose the fact that blair and bush were lying about the proposed invasion?  my point is the west are just as corrupt and complicit in deceiving their own people as nigerians are.

this jonathan of hardtalk is PAID to PRETEND to engage in hardtalk - why is he not asking the real questions eg why has britain and america INCREASED arms sales to nigeria despite the fact that the nigerian govt  is one of the most corrupt and repressive govts in the world.

okay so madueke supported abacha when he was in power, but so did the british and americans - who do  you think sold him arms, abacha was done away with when he started moving away from the american and british agenda and started making unilateral decisions without consulting them first.

of course i want a transparent govt but my point is that Maduekwe is not the problem, the problem has to be traced all the way back to the real power brokers who are protecting these corrupt policiticians.  if the british and americans say that these people are so incompetent and useless why are they still selling them millions of dollars worth of arms.
The West sells us arms and I am not going to argue about that. What I want to argue is why so many Nigerians live in poverty and don't have basic healthcare, proper housing , electricity and jobs etc,  While all our people are suffering Abacha, Babangida, Obasanjo, Aikhomu, Diya, Ibori, Alamieyeseigha etc have billions of Nigeria's money in their private bank accounts. Europe and America have their faults but please let us face ourselves in Africa and stop blaming the West. If the West is so terrible why are Africans queueing at foreign embassies at 3am? Why are African drowning in boats due to desperation to reach Europe? Why do those of us abroad not refuse Western passports when we qualify for citizenship? Until we stop blaming the West and realize that it is our own governments keeping us in virtual SLAVERY then we will just keep under developing in Africa.

Who knows tomorrow? I may die abroad, I may die in Nigeria, for goodness sake I may even be blown out of the sky by another Umar Farouk AbdulMutallab! grin Where I die is irrelevant. What is relevant is a country of over 120 million people with billions of dollars in oil resources yet majority of our people don't have access to basic healthcare and where the wealthy, ex presidents and our current Presidon run ABROAD for the healthcare of themselves and their families. Shameless idiots! Those of us wey dey abroad wey dey work hard and earn honest living, no be us steal and waste the billions of Naija money wey ordinary electricity, water and healthcare no dey. Most African countries are ruled by THIEVES! Our so called rulers don't give a damn about their own people so how can you expect them to give a damn about Haiti. All they are interested in is sending their stolen money to Swiss accounts, sending their children to school abroad, buying mansions abroad, going for medical check ups abroad and like our Presidon in Naija and IBB's late wife the latest craze is to [b]DIE ABROAD. shocked

I think the Original poster needs to have a rethink. Since when does the views of a few extremists on Youtube reflect the mindset of the entire western world? All i see on TV is western nations donating aid, materiel and rescue services to haiti. the response of African nations has been much more muted.
I see westerners campaigning for an end to the despoil and murder of women in Congo. How many Nigerian news agencies have even reported on this issue? We see Hollywood stars in darfur, genuinely concerned with easing the suffering of the people there. What sensitivity is displayed by your precious Nollywood stars?

Black people are far more insensitive to the plight of their fellow blacks. First fix the problems in your own race before you begin to cast stones
Excellent post. I agree with you 100%. Like I said before Blacks and Africans especially are our own worst enemies. We should face ourselves instead of blaming Whites for all our failures and lack of progress. Our leaders are too busy amassing BILLIONs of stolen money and sending their children to school abroad while millions of Africans live in poverty, children die due to poor healthcare and lack of clean water, fellow Africans massacre their own countrymen, the list goes on and on. Last time I went home it was so sad seeing children under ten begging for food on the streets of Lagos cry cry

@SapeleGuy , you miscontrued my article.

In no way was I disrespecting Haitians, I have donated money to the red cross and will still be donating till this crisis is over.

My issue , hence this article, had to do with the utter disregard that people in western societies have for suffering blacks the world over.

I was disheartended to read many articles written by educated and highly placed Americans questioning :

- Why the US government is allowing displaced Haitian children into Miami, because , their train of thought is that these 'illegal immigrants ' will become a burden to society in general.

- Comments by Americans that these mud eating niggers should all die

- Why Obama was sending millions of dollars to Haiti when Americans are suffering at home

and it goes on and on and on.

Remember Hurriacane Katrina in New Orleans when the government sent the national guard instead of immediate aid and assistance

Remember Rwanda when the Belgian soilders came to rescue ONLY their fellow Belgians

Its an endless list of these similar sort of events.

I am not American bashing here , I am only trying to understand why even in suffering blacks are hated ( obviously not all whites hate blacks ) and mistreated.

@ transformR

I feel no pity for myself, I am a British citizen with Nigerian ancestry.

But I do feel for my people when I see them go through pain with no concrete plan to alleviate the sufferings they have to cope with on a daily basis.

I do my little bit for my extended family back home and will even want to come home and contribute positively some of my skills for the benefit of the nation. However the endemic corruption that plagues Nigeria prevents this.

The comments are coming from highly educated but ill informed people like Pat Robertson, Rush Limbaugh and many others who read msnbc, cnn, abc news channels. Many of these are educated people.
I'm sorry but I disagree. Even blacks don't care about blacks! cry Let us face ourselves in Africa. Hausas attacking and killing Ibos in Nigeria, Yorubas killing Hausas in Nigeria, Ibos killing Hausas in Nigeria, Sudanese r*ping their own women and killing babies in Sudan, Liberians hacking off the limbs of fellow Liberians including women and children in Liberia, Rwandese and Congolese enslaving children to work in mines and killing thousands of their fellow citizens in Rwanda and Congo and recently Kenyans murdering fellow Kenyans after the elections in Kenya. I should also add that in 2008 fellow black South Africans went on rampage murdering fellow BLACK Africans from Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Nigeria. We cannot keep blaming white people for all our problems. Blacks and Africans are our own worst enemies. Our leaders steal BILLIONS of dollars and keep in Swiss Accounts, yet when a fellow black country is facing this kind of humanitarian disaster it is America, Europe, Australia, Israel, New Zeland, China and Japan rushing personnel, doctors, nurses, engineers and food to Haiti. The truth is bitter but we need to face it. shocked

For goodness sake this is a country of fellow black people yet our USELESS governments in AFRICA are silent and can do nothing.
