InvestmentRe: Interest Rate On Fixed Deposit Accounts In Nigeria by Roforofo(m): 12:51am On Dec 16, 2009
I know the interest offered on fixed deposit is "chicken change" for some people on Nairaland but for me it is ok. I have 10 million fixed with GTB at 14% and I get paid about 343,000 Naira every 90 days. I know some will say with "e-book, forex trading, malu trading, diesel trading and haulage business" I will get much higher returns. However I am not interested in high returns. I live in the UK and I just wanted to keep money safely in my country so that I can earn reasonable returns and use the interest whenever I am visiting Nigeria without needing to ever carry forex from here when I am visiting Naija. It is also easy with GTB to manage your accounts online from abroad and make payments to family members in Nigeria in Naira without ever needing "Moneygram or Western Union".
BusinessRe: Which Of The 25 Consolidated Banks in Nigeria do u rank best by Roforofo(m): 10:30pm On Dec 06, 2009
@ Damolux01. The interest on the fixed deposit is not paid annually. The 14% rate is the total you will get if you choose to fix for a year. However I get paid interest every 90 days (so you get approximately 25% of the total yearly interest minus tax). I simply rollover the capital and added interest at the end of the 90 days. I prefer this so if I need my capital urgently I can get at it within 3 months (90 days) instead of it being stuck in the bank for 1 year.
BusinessRe: Which Of The 25 Consolidated Banks in Nigeria do u rank best by Roforofo(m): 12:23pm On Dec 05, 2009
Damolux01. I currently get a fixed rate of 14% on 10 million. I am sure you can get higher rates with other banks but I want peace of mind and want to be able to operate my account safely and efficiently from the UK so I am happy with GTB.
PoliticsRe: Tribute To Nigerian Military In Pictures by Roforofo(m): 12:06pm On Dec 05, 2009
Excellent pictures. We need a strong military especially in our dangerous continent and sub-region. I hope one day our Government will make EDUCATION, HEALTH, ENERGY and INTERNAL SECURITY the priorities they ought to be. When they do this, then like the military personnel proudly displaying in the pictures, other Nigerian citizens will start to give a damn about our country rather than the "all man for himself, God for us all" attitude that is endemic in Nigerian society.

Like others I absolutely support GTB. They are safe and efficient. I fixed some money with them and as promised they pay 250K Naira every 90 days. No story, what they promise is what you get. Being abroad I can view my accounts online and make payments if required to family members in Nigeria from the comfort of my laptop. No story, no need for Western Union or Moneygram, no stupid fraudsters issuing fake emails, fake businesses and fake telephone numbers grin grin. Please go with GTB for peace of mind. All online transactions require a security token to complete any outward transactions from your accounts, so your money is 100% safe. ( The token is issued to the account holder only)
PoliticsRe: What Do You Tell Your Children About Nigeria! by Roforofo(m): 1:30am On Nov 30, 2009
I tell my children that it is where their dad is from and they should be proud of their mixed heritage (Nigerian and Swedish). They speak Yoruba, Swede, French and English and we teach them about both cultures. I have taught them about great Nigerians like Fela Kuti, Chinua Achebe, Wole Soyinka, Gani Fawehenmi, Ken Saro Wiwa, Aminu Kano, Tai Solarin, Alfred Rewane, Cyprian Ekwensi etc. They love Nigerian music and enjoy going to Nigeria every 3 years. I have also taught them that our rulers are corrupt, thieving scum who oppress and loot the country repeatedly. However I hope learning about the poverty and hardship I faced growing up makes them develop a work ethic of honesty and diligence as well as compassion for those who are less fortunate in all societies.
TravelRe: Travelling To Nigeria For The First Time, How Much Should I Bring? by Roforofo(m): 1:16am On Nov 30, 2009
Udeychop, disregard the cynical replies. £100 per day will be more than enough for eating out, clubbing etc anywhere in Nigeria. I was in Lagos, PH and Abuja. These are our most expensive cities and your budget will cover social activities in all three places. Have a good holiday.
TravelRe: Travelling To Nigeria For The First Time, How Much Should I Bring? by Roforofo(m): 9:43pm On Nov 29, 2009
Sheraton Lagos, 5 people chop and drink tire 75K Naira although we were drinking Star, Gulder and Stout. Of course it would be considerably more if una dey pop Moet or Dom Perignon. grin I don't have figures for fine wine and champagne as me I be hustler. Was also at Shrine and seriously 10 of una no fit eat and drink 25k naira. Generally doubt you will need more than 50K at most places even the ones that are expensive. In PH went out with 50K and we were drinking with the Governor at Polo club which should give you an idea of how cheap it is! shocked

Udeychop don't waste your time with bad belle people. Dem plenty for Nairaland. If you require any more info on this topic just post a question and I will try my best to answer.
TravelRe: Travelling To Nigeria For The First Time, How Much Should I Bring? by Roforofo(m): 8:49pm On Nov 29, 2009
If the money is just for enjoyment (food, drinks, petrol etc) about 30,000 Naira (£120) daily is more than enough. Went home two months ago and budgeted 50,000 daily and it was way too much. Food and drink is cheap in Naija. What I found expensive was buying diesel for my folks generator as there is never electricity grin and buying phone recharge cards!

I am sad that I have to live abroad but if my country refuses to give me a job unless I have connections or my father is a big man then sorry I need to eat and fend for my kids. It is unfortunate that so many of us have left and will spend our working lives abroad but at least our children will have a better future. Being abroad is not paradise but it is better than being a slave in your own country. I work, educate my kids in the UK and can afford to send money home for the education of relatives who are less fortunate in Nigeria. Despite the downsides of being an immigrant abroad I prefer this life to living in poverty in Nigeria and spending my life putting my hands behind my back and saying "Yes Sir, Yes Sir" to useless corrupt so called "big men".
BusinessRe: How Can We Combat Fraud In Nigeria? by Roforofo(m): 6:54pm On Nov 29, 2009
Extreme measures such as executing the entire adult population are a distraction from the main sources of our problems. Embedded corruption in the political class and no obedience of the rule of law by those governing us. When a government does not give a damn about it's people large swathes of the citizenry also do not give a damn about the country. The citizens then embark on this mad hell bent pursuit of money by any means necessary or try to escape and migrate from the country. We deserve the government we get. If all of us are either trying to get rich quick or escape to Western countries of course the baboons ruling Nigeria will continue to wreck the country.

BusinessRe: I Need Advise On Which Bank To Choose In Nigeria by Roforofo(m): 1:02pm On Nov 08, 2009
I have GTB excellent. You can operateyour account completely online from the UK. Just don't forget to ask for a GTB token which you will require when making third party payments to other GTB or Nigerian bank accounts. It works the same way as a card reader used by UK banks. Please contact the bank you decide on directly. Do not respond to fraudsters on this site giving you contact email addresses or mobile phone numbers. They are ALL SCAMMERS. To all you SCAMMERS, if you have any special info or advice for the original poster please post it openly on the forum and stop giving your bloody email or mobile numbers out. Nobody is interested in contacting you. @Ozassu take note.

SMSguru, i didnt expect such responses from you, someone gave an honest advice of how he started his, even if you dont want to start yours that way, a simple thank you for his advice and a diplomatic no would have been just appropriate. You are not bound to accept everybody's idea.

@Geniusbami. Thanks for the info. I must say that I am so impressed with GTB and see why so many Nairalanders speak very highly of this bank. The money was deposited with them and I immediately received email notification of the deposit. I called my local branch to ask for the money to be fixed for 90days. I have online banking with GTB and within 2 mins of speaking to the branch the money was showing up on my online account with the tenor expiry date and the total interest to be added at maturity. This bank is good. I wish other companies at home can emulate them in terms of customer service and reliability. Na GTB for life o!!! grin
InvestmentRe: Fixed Deposit Account 10 Million Naira by Roforofo(op): 10:07am On Oct 10, 2009
Geniusbami. I do not doubt what you are saying and I believe you. What irritates me is when all these scammers come on Nairaland giving private email addresses and mobile numbers instead of simply saying which bank will give the best rate. Why do we need their bloody details for anything? huh Anyway thanks for the info on Stanbic. I have gone for a 90 day fix with GTB at 13.5% as I am abroad and already have a GTB account. All the others needed to see me in person to open the account so GTB was my only option.
