Please all those reading this thread DO NOT respond to anyone providing email addresses/websites/phone numbers. These people are scammers and I would advise that you deal directly with a reputable bank in Nigeria (GTB, Standard Chartered, IBTC Stanbic, Ecobank, Citibank, Firstbank) These are institutions that have operated in Nigeria for many years and can be contacted directly. Never send money or do business with these individuals on Nairaland who keep hijacking threads to issue phone numbers/email address/ fake websites. I will keep the board updated on my investigations into discount houses. I am going to contact FSDH and Kakawa as these are two big discount houses which are used by multi-nationals and are reputable. Do not lose your hard earned cash to scamsters. @ Paininass, please note that 9% of something is better than 0% of nothing. If unhappy with Skye Bank rates re -negotiate with them or move your money to another bank. Please DO NOT send your hard earned cash to scammers on Nairaland. My people make we dey shine our eye well well shocked shocked. Everybody say yeah yeah. grin grin

That is the rate I was quoted by an accounts officer in GTB.
InvestmentRe: Fixed Deposit Account 10 Million Naira by Roforofo(op): 11:21pm On Sep 30, 2009
My thanks to all of you for your very honest and straightforward advice. I will investigate the discount house option and also start with a 90 day fix if they provide this. Many thanks.
InvestmentRe: Fixed Deposit Account 10 Million Naira by Roforofo(op): 11:52am On Sep 30, 2009
Candylips. I agree which is why I made the original post. My thoughts are that if the account can generate at least 1 million Naira over one year it will be better than keeping in fixed in the UK. The best rate I can get on £38,000 currently is 4.5% which will be about £1,600. So even with currency fluctuations it seems like fixing in Nigeria might be a better bet. Unless of course our currency devalues like the Zimbabwe dollar. I would appreciate your views on this. Thanks
InvestmentRe: Fixed Deposit Account 10 Million Naira by Roforofo(op): 11:47am On Sep 30, 2009
Hambehsam. Please can you explain why I should ask for the money to be fixed in treasury bills? I have looked at FSDH's website and they only seem to deal with stocks/share trading. Do they accept individuals who wish to invest in treasury bills? Will I get a higher return if I go direct to them rather than GTB? Thanks again for your advice.
InvestmentRe: Fixed Deposit Account 10 Million Naira by Roforofo(op): 11:41am On Sep 30, 2009
Thank you both for your honest and straightforward advice. I will contact GTB about negotiating the rate upwars and will also contact FSDH. Is there any other reputable discount house you can recommend. Thanks
InvestmentFixed Deposit Account 10 Million Naira by Roforofo(op): 10:24am On Sep 30, 2009
Hello to fellow Nairalanders. Given the current low interest rates abroad I want to send the equivalent of 10 million to Nigeria and fix as I will get a better return on my money (13.5% for 90 days compared to 3.4% in the UK). However I wanted to know if others with fixed deposits feel our currency is too unstable for this kind of venture. I will be sending the money by SWIFT to GTB. Please I am only interested in fixing so please I will ignore any email addresses/phone numbers advising on business ventures which will give me untold riches and returns of 50-99%. I just want genuine thoughts on the medium term stability of our  dear Naira.

I dey vex as I dey read this topic. I am sorry that people have lost their hard earned kishi. Abeg moderators please put a prominent advisory on the homepage of Nairaland advising people not to transact business with people they do not know who they have met on Nairaland. Please my countrypeople shine una eyes well well shocked. Only do business with established companies that can be verified by your own friends and family in Nigeria. Do not trust ANYONE (even me sef) wey dey give mobile numbers and business details on this site. Please NEVER send any money to anyone who has given business details on this site. They are fraudsters. Do not be penny wise and pound foolish.
PoliticsRe: 1960: Were We Ready For Independence? by Roforofo(m): 5:55pm On Jul 27, 2009
It is a difficult question to answer. We dey make progress especially in the private sector, commerce and business. Na our government wey no get long term vision on developing our society. Nigeria is not a unique basket case however the sad thing in our case is that the smart people either work in the private sector/commerce or emigrate abroad and na  thieving ex soldiers, political crooks, thugs and dimwits who are left to rule. It should therefore not surprise anyone of us that the result we are left with is a dysfunctional crazy society. Fela Anikulapo Kuti's songs, many of which were recorded in the 60's and 70's are accurate characterizations of the deep seated wretchedness, crookedness, roguery and wickedness of our so called "leaders". Fela's analysis still holds true 49 years after our independence. Everybody say yeah yeah. grin
FamilyRe: Would You Prefer A Nigerian Lady For Marriage? by Roforofo(m): 5:21pm On Jul 26, 2009
My people. I throway salute. Dis na interesting topic. My advice. Pray to God/Allah or whoever you believe in and hope to find a good wife or husband then work hard to make the marriage work. Dis sef does not guarantee marital success but I think it is at least a good starting point. A few examples. My sister and brother-in-law divorced after 4 years, both Naija. My sister friend divorce im Naija husband for Lagos after im discover say im husband get HIV, both Naija again! My padipadi for Yankee na Yoruba boy wey marry Fulani girl from Katsina, married 6 years with two children and still together in the States. My broda and im wife both Naija still together 15 years.  My wife na oyinbo Swede, we dey live for Jand still together, two children and married 6 years after dating for 3 years. I am not an expert in marriage and I do not claim to be. All I dey advise na say formula no dey this thing. Na to pray and work and hope that your marriage works. Marrying someone from your hamlet or from Alaska does not guarantee anything. Marriage no be mathematics grin

Blacknite 1. Shine your eye well well. Do not trust any of these people on Nairaland whom you have never met. Make dem no 419 you oooo. My advice is to look through their suggestions and anyone that appeals to you research it YOURSELF and decided if it is viable. I know most Nairalanders are decent people but please do not part with money based on useless promises of sky high returns from fraudsters on our dear website. They will promise you heaven and earth to make you part with your money. No be Naija? Na today? grin Abeg my guy, you do not know these people and do NOT send your money to them. As dem dey say for Lagos Caveat Emptor (Buyer Beware)! grin

Lastpage. Your post is a brilliant read. I completely agree that our Ministry of Education should make the study of Fela, the man and his music essential reading for all school pupils in Nigeria. He was not a perfect man, but his life serves as a lesson to all Nigerians that standing up and speaking the truth, giving a voice to the downtrodden and continually trying to improve our country is what we should all be doing. He lived amongst the poor and opened his home to all, rich or poor, educated and illiterate and people from all tribes. Unfortunately our rulers are only obsessed with accumulation of power and wealth.cry. Abacha, Diya, Babangida, Aikhomu, Obasanjo and co despite all their stolen billions will be remembered in the same vein as Mobutu, Bokassa, Idi Amin, Houphet Boigny, Bongo and Mugabe. Money cannot buy a good name and history does not lie. Nigerians know the truth and despite all their stolen wealth I know Fela Anikulapo Kuti will forever be held in higher regard than all our billionaire ex presidents and their thieving cronies. As Baba 70 himself talk, na Jeun Koku go finish all of dem! Everybody say yeah yeah grin

It is amazing and humbling to see the fantastic and superb analysis of the facts by some of the posters on this thread. They have renewed ny pride in our dear country. I am glad to see so many people speaking up for the truth instead of hiding behind fake patriotism. The thing wey Emirates talk na the unalduterated truth, simple and short. No story. The discourse now as others have rightly suggested should be about how we all as Nigerians can help to put things right in our country. It is pure stupidity to deny a very serious  problem exists in the way our country is governed and how things are run by those in power. I doubt if any of us on this forum can claim to have loved Nigeria or fought for it's masses more than Fela Anikulapo Kuti and even Baba 70 himself when singing about those who stupidly support our corrupt government on the track "Everything Scatter" said, "dat is how dis country be, dat is why everything dey scatter scatter, no wonder rere run, no wonder people no see food to chop, no wonder rererun". Prophetic lyrics which were first composed in 1975 and still hold true in Nigeria today! cry Abeg everybody say yeah yeah!

Our people. Not the 1110% bad eggs giving us a bad name around the world, but the 90% hard working, honest and proud people who are not materially rich but struggle everyday to give their children a better life despite the evil machinations of our corrupt rulers. They are the ones who make me proud to be Nigerian. Also love our diverse cultures, food, parties and music especially Afrobeat . Nothing beats chilling in a beer parlour with friends sipping on big stout and eating asun and suya while Abami dey play for background. grin

Siddon there dey yarn nonsense from abroad. Our country people na 46 years be dem life expectancy rate. Infant mortality rate na 96 per 1000 births. 2.6 million people dey live with HIV in Nigeria while our State Governments dey approve donation of 7 billion Naira to build Obasanjo Presidential library. Siddon dey talk rubbish while government soldiers dey kill innocent villagers for Bayelsa and Rivers. No be your fault. Na ignorance and self deceit dey worry many of our people. Well done Emirates. Dem no dey lie. We should not defend our useless government which does not care for it's own people. No be am cause allman to dey post internet messages from Europe and Yankee. Go read Guardian of Sunday 14th September wey our own Presido dey advertise contract for maintainance of Aso Rock Generator to ensure 24/7 electric for Aso Villa! shocked Dat wan be say lie lie Nepa no go ever work for our country. As Naijas we need to start facing up to uncomfortable truths about our country and stop comparing ourselves to other people. I no get shame in talking am say our government is full of useless and incompetent thieves. Even for this board una no see say once person mention say im wan invest na so so stupid ideas with emails and mobile number go begin appear. We suppose expose all these bad things about ourselves. BusinessRe: Safe Way Of Carrying Money by Roforofo(op): 9:06pm On Jun 10, 2009
My people. I have found a solution. Zenith Bank has a 20/20 prepay card. Maximum load 500K but maximum daily withdrawals 50K. Na only 20 Naira to load the card. This in combination with a cardless linked account with the same bank sounds like the best bet in Naija if visiting on hols. Sango go punish the thief wey think say him fit chop our hard earned forex for Lagos. Our banks dey try ooooo. Lets keep sharing info to thwart the fraudsters who keep trying to steal money wey no belong to dem. grin

Ifyalways. Thanks for your advice. Is it safe to go online while in Naija and do the transfers or safer to just keep going into a branch when I want to move the money from a savings account to the second account linked to an ATM card? MrCrackles me sef for no mind carry the money inside socks Naija style grin. Wahala be say the amount too much, but make we thank God say Naija no dey Zimbabwe level wey person go need 1 billion in notes just to pay for Isi Ewu and big stout!!!! shocked

Eyin omo Naija please help.

I am going home for  2 months with my wife and 2 young kids and we leave in about 3 weeks. I have transferred some money to GTB in Lagos. During my trip we will be travelling to different states and I was wondering what people will recommend as the best way to carry money around Naija. My family at home do not trust using Naija debit cards at ATMs or for payments because the amounts in my account are pretty significant and they are worried about fraud. Reading Nairaland posts on the prevalence of ATM fraud in Naija makes me think they are right however is there another option apart from constantly going to a GTB branch to withdraw cash? I am also wary of carrying large amounts as we will be visiting family and friends in Lagos/Ibadan/Akure and also taking the children and their cousins on a trip to Yankari and Abuja. I have searched on google for prepaid cards which I can load Naira on but it seems the Naija banks only offer this option if you are loading foreign currency!! huh Any advice will be appreciated.
