This matter is not something that is judged based on sentiments or emotion. It is judged based on the law. Go and read section 217 of the constitution if you want know the powers of the President of Nigeria to deploy the military.

Public safety and internal security is the job of the police, not the Army. The job of the Army is external security. Other civilised countries, nobody ever sees the Army come out of the Barack unless there is war somewhere or serious brakedown of law and order. The President sending the Army to a peaceful place where there is no breakdown of law and order, no war and no armed conflict is mischievous, stupid, ill advices and abuse office.

If Kanu or his group pose any threat to public safety, it is the job of the police to investigate and charge accordingly. It is not for the Army to move in and start shooting people.

Also, how can Kanu and his group pose a threat to public safety when they are not armed and have no history of violence? Operation Python dance was state sponsored terrorism.
The president has the power to use his discretion in the deployment of the armed forces for any internal security operation he deems fit. Even in America the president can exercise such power. If he cannot use the army to maintain internal security, then what is the use of the army? Obassanjo used it at Odi, Yaradua did so against boko haram. No serious person has ever questioned this power.

Sorry but you are wrong. Section 217 is what deals with the powers of the President to deploy the Army, not the armed forces act. Although chapter 8 of the armed forces act gives the President the power to decide operational use of the military, it also ends by saying “operational use of the Armed Forces includes the operational use of the Armed Forces in Nigeria for the purpose of maintaining and securing public safety"

Section 217 that now deals with the presidents powers to deploy the military only allows the President two scenarios in which he can use the military to effect internal security. In the case of insurrection, or to aid civil authorities to restore order. There was no order to restore in the South East and neither was there any insurrection. Internal security is the job of the police, not the Army. The Army only aid the police when the situation cannot be contained by just the police.

As for Kanu violating his bail condition, it was incumbent for everyone to wait until the court revoked the bail. Even now, the court has not revoked his bail. What did the military go to do at Kanu's house?
The president used the army against IPOB in a legal manner. He has the authority to deploy the army to protect the public safety, a safety which was threatened by Kanu and his people. There is no court of law in the country today that won't throw out your case after a single hearing. Its not the govt's fault Kanu went into hiding

One thing Nnamdi Kanu's disappearance taught me is that there are several media outlets in Nigeria that are unnecessarily biased. The press should be the vanguard of democracy, they are the watchdogs of government. They are ones who should call out government when it is doing evil. But in the case of Nnamdi Kanu, many press houses such as Tvc news, Channels and AIT seem to have added with government, when they should not. There are important questions I expected the press in democratic government to ask:-

1) Is operation Python dance legal? Is it right for a president to deploy Soldier's to the South East where there was no war or armed conflict?

2)Does the constitution empower the Army to take over the job of the police in crime fighting?

3)What law empowers the President of Nigeria to deploy Soldier's against unarmed people?

4) Why is it that the operation Python dance was to begin on the 15th of September but the Military came around Kanu's house on the 11th and invaded Kanu's house on the 14th of September, all before the official start of Python dance?

5) Why did the Army invade Kanu's house when they have no constitutional power to do so?

6) Why was IPOB, which has no guns and never killed anyone, declared a terrorist group but others like the Herdsmen and Niger Delta Militants who have taken up arms and killed people have no such tag?

It is quite clear that Federal government commited so many crimes with operation Python dance that by the time they go through the court process, it will be a national fiasco.

Section 217 of the constitution only permits the President to deploy the Army to:-

1. Suppress insurrection
2. Protect Nigeria against external aggression and maintain its territory
3. Aid civil authorities to restore order
4. Carry out any duty by an act of the national assembly

None of this applied to IPOB. The federal government is in a big mess over PYTHON dance and the only thing saving its face is the terrorist tag it put on IPOB, hopefully will soon be overturned at the court of appeal. Operation Python dance was state sponsored terrorism.
The president has the power under the armed forces act to deploy the army for internal security operations. IPOB was a security threat, and Kanu jumped bail when he realized he was going to be sent back to jail for violating his bail conditions. He is in hiding

Days have gone by, months are sliding away and it's gradually getting to a year when one of Nigeria's most outspoken men disappeared after Nigerian Army stormed his father's residence where he happened to be at that moment, killed a whOle lot of people and Kanu is not to be be heard from ever since.

I'm not surprised at the impunity with which the Army carried out that operation. They acted under instructions. This instruction, they have extended to providing cover for the fulani militia and herdsmen who maim without provocation. T.Y Danjuma was well informed before he could make such assertions. This prompted him to make a call for self defense. Kanu was a voice against oppression, tribal supremacy, bigotry and ethnic jingoism. And that is what the north hate to hear. Whatever The British did with this country over 100 years favored them and all they wish anyone who speaks against such arrangements is death.

"........and Kanu was killed" cry

What baffles me more is the deafening silence which elders of this country have kept. Sometimes I ask myself, "where they all bribed to keep shut"? If Buhari could dole out millions of euros to bokoharam, there is absolutely nothing he cannot do to achieve desperate aims.

From Ohaneze to Yoruba elders and all other elders excluding the Northern elders forum, Their stand is obvious, no one is really demanding to know the whereabouts of a man who made Nigerians take restructuring seriously. Ironically since his demise, the call for restructuring has subsided. It's now obvious that his grievances was in the best interest of the country. With his disappearance and the silence, it is now worth saying that Nigeria's elites do not want the good of this country.

If Kanu were to be in a 'safe' place, he would have been talking aggressively, and that is what the Nigerian government needs to wake up.

Where ever Kanu is, he is a hero for the little he spoke and did irrespective of how anyone chooses to see it.

Just as I anticipate the conspiracy behind Chibok and dapchi girls' abduction which I believe will expose more wickedness of the human heart, I earnestly yearn to read about how the government conspired with others to do away with Kanu. It would make a captivating read.

Who doesn't want to read?
Nnamdi Kanu jumped bail and ran away when he got wind of his imminent imprisonment for breaking all his bail conditions. He can never step foot on Nigerian soil again without being rearrested on sight

I am sick and tired of the hypocritical ‘political correctness’ and intimidation by way of claims to ‘hate speech’ in the matter of drugs addiction among Arewa youths. We are gradually losing our youths to drugs - and the gradual has since become rapid. We must therefore call a spade a spade - and whatever a shovel will say, let it!

The other day I visited an inner-city neighbourhood in Kano City for a midday meeting. The young boys I saw all appeared stoned, high, drugged. When they spoke (“A gama lafiya Honourable!” and “Me za mu samu ne Yallabai?” etc), they eliminated all doubt about their state of mind; the slurred speech, the gait, the mannerism, the unkempt hair, the I-don’t-care-attitude all combined to tell me this is, sadly, an almost lost generation.

Over the past year, I have attended dozens of conferences and roundtables on drugs. Over the same period, I have heard our elite and leaders speak on this epidemic, pandemic, that has almost completely annihilated a whole generation. All speakers condemn, cajole, appeal, warn, but none seems to be addressing the crux of the matter - SUPPLY!

And that’s what I’m going to do today as I did recently at yet another roundtable where I was quoted to have blamed a minority within a certain ethnic group of being the major suppliers of drugs to OUR, not THEIR, youths. Our youths, and us, are under siege wallahi. And the earlier we jettison all fear of Diaporic Curses by Loud-Mouthed Internet Warriors, the better for us.

Let me say this - I am Hausa-Fulani. Despite my Fulani-ness, I have time without number condemned so-called herdsmen who are mainly Fulani AND who are involved in criminal activities. I again condemn them and call on them to fear God and recant. So, if herders are Fulani, and that’s not hate speech, I see no reason why the identity of drugs traffickers who are destroying our youths cannot be said. Every ethnic group should be courageous enough to do as much - condemn the criminal elements among them. And that’s not asking for too much.

As an academician and journalist, it comes easy, by Allah’s Leave, to be able to do some little research and follow-throughs on this matter. The following are a few illustrations:

“The Katsina State Command of National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA…said it had…impounded a trailer in Dutsenreme area of Funtua loaded with 24,000 bottles…of cough syrup with codeine in a trailer from Onitsha to Funtua…Among those arrested are Christian Chukwuma and Obiora Chukwuma…”

“A hard drug (Intoxicant) supplier, identified as Stanley Arinze, has been arrested by the Kano Police Command for trying to smuggle hard drugs...The tablets worth N19, 200,000 were intercepted after being concealed inside LG Plasma TV cartons in a trailer along Kano Eastern bye-pass. The man, a native of Anambra State, reportedly supplies Tramadol tablets to Kano and Republic of Niger…” and “Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court in Abuja…sentenced a man, Mr. Anthony Chidi Ikeaba, to 14 years imprisonment for unlawfully importing 1.782 kg of cocaine into the country…”

“Officials of the…NDLEA at the Murtala Mohammed Airport, Lagos prevented two Nigerians from execution in Malaysia…Onovo Sylvester
Henry…and Ufiri Onyedika Emmanuel…were caught attempting to smuggle 2.575kg of methamphetamine to Malaysia where drug offences attract capital punishment. Nnamdi John Kingsley was nabbed while taking delivery of the television sets containing heroin…“ I have also asked in previous articles: “Where is that container of tramadol intercepted a few months ago by a team of patriotic customs officers destined for No. 3, Festing Road, Sabon Gari, Kano? Where are the arrested and named traffickers Mr. Stanley Arinze, Mr. Onuchukwu Benjamin Owulu and Mr. Igboanugo Vincent Tochukwu?”

and And then, if this doesn’t alarm you, nothing else will, ever! “NAFDAC has intercepted 33 containers of tramadol which were being conveyed to a yet-to-be-ascertained location in Nigeria…The disclosure was made by the NAFDAC Director-General, Prof Adeyeye, in Abuja…”

Arewa, are we also drugged? Why would we just sit down and watch people from elsewhere just come and destroy our youths in broad daylight? Why is nobody following up on these traffickers? Where are the prosecutors and the judges who are alleged to be conniving and using technicalities to release - purportedly on bail - these traffickers who more often than not are never arrested again?

I know some economics. I even know many economists - they of the ‘on the one hand…and on the other hand…’ In fact, I even spoke at a Dinner by BUK Economics Students Class of 2008 just last week. I know inflation and what a small salary can’t do; I know scarcity and glut, in layman’s language ‘over-supply’.

My little knowledge tells me supply trumps demand. Elementary economics, as explained on Wikipedia, says “When supply of a product goes up, the price of a product goes down and demand for the product can rise because it costs less.” Key words here: “Costs Less”. We, therefore, must staunch the supply.

It is good that “Two draft bills have been initiated for legislation to tackle drug abuse in the country...The proposed bills are the National Drug Control Bill and National Mental Health Bill…”

This is all good. The Senate President and his colleagues were in Kano recently, and they promised to do something about drugs abuse. Apparently, they are keeping to their words. But is this enough?

The Senate President should listen to the call by NAFDAC DG Prof Adeyeye: “The National Assembly should amend the law such that drug peddlers could be given stiffer penalties…Using drugs is centrally controlled or central nervous system-based which means it hits the brain immediately and it changes the user to somebody else. During the first use and second use, the brain of the user becomes very different because of dependence. The youths are then no longer able to control themselves, and that is where the crimes, terrorism, come in. Therefore, please let the word go out that drug use comes with consequences. Many youths are dying of drug overdose because it is very easy for them to access addictive drugs…”

Our children are massively into drugs because there is massive, unceasing and incessant supply. We must staunch the supply. Then review our laws. Then detoxify our children. Or simultaneously and concurrently.

We all wonder why we cannot bring capital punishment to national crimes such as drugs trafficking and, to be politically-correct, to kidnapping, rape, armed robbery and murder. Is Thailand more sensible than us, for example?

Two NDLEA State Commanders I follow closely are Kano’s Hamza Umar and Katsina’s Maryam Sani who are genuinely as concerned as I am on this very serious matter. This is not to say the others are not making effort, but Kano, Jigawa and Katsina are my immediate neighbourhood.

So, let’s recap - the Katsina Elite (I will here particularly appeal to senior academic colleague the Wazirin Katsina Prof Sani Lugga) should rise and help Maryam Sani of NDLEA and follow up on the Funtua case. The Kano Elite - LEADS of Barr. Aisha Dankani and Concerned Kano Citizens of Alhaji Bashir Tofa for example - should help Hamza Umar of NDLEA to unearth the matter of 3 Festing Road Sabon Gari and ‘drugs in plasma television’.

Pan-Arewa, the Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI), Northern CAN, Usman Bugaje’s Arewa Research and Development Project (ARDP), the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), the Northern Elders Forum (NEF) and those Arewa October Youths must just have to collaborate and do something in unison, for once.

We just have to do it, and may Allah make it easy for us.

I made a chilling discovery yesterday, I traveled to Zaria two days ago to fix my car. I met a young man of less than 30.

He was a shoe shiner. He looked cool and calm. I needed to have my shoes done so I invited him. While he was shining my shoes I decided to engage him in a conversation.

While we got talking I noticed his hausa language, though fluent was not the kind we speak here and that made me curious.

I asked him where he came from and he replied, 'Niger'. Immediately I knew why his hausa sounded so awkward. Then he continued, "an kawo mu muyi Zabe ne", he said in broken hausa. Meaning, We came for elections. I was shocked at his comments.

He pulled from his pocket a card that was clearly a voters card. He said someone came and offered them residency in Nigeria if they would vote for a man who would make them Nigerians.

According to him there are buses who convey Nigeriens daily into Nigeria. They are registered and given voters card. Their duty is to keep the current government in office beyond 2019.
