The Peoples Democratic Party and major groups , including the Nigeria Voters ’ Assembly and the National Association of Resident Doctors, on Tuesday, differed on the latest development on President Muhammadu Buhari’ s medical vacation. While the NVA said the President ’ s statement on his health was a message of hope , the PDP said it wished the President well. The NARD said his absence could create some gaps , which could lead to power play at the federal level. Buhari had , on Tuesday, said the results of a series of checkups he carried out in the course of his medical vacation had shown that he needed longer period of rest. He said this necessitated his staying back in London longer than initially planned. The President said this in a four- paragraph statement made available to journalists by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity , Mr . Femi Adesina. Adesina did not disclose how long the President ’ s “ longer period of rest” would take . He , however , thanked Nigerians for their prayers and good wishes while assuring them that there was no cause for worry . The statement read , “ The President is immensely grateful for the prayers , show of love and concern . “ President Buhari wishes to reassure Nigerians that there is no cause for worry . ‘”During his normal annual checkup, tests showed he needed a longer period of rest , necessitating the President staying longer than originally planned. ” The President of NARD , Dr . Onyebueze Ugochukwu , urged Nigerians to pray for the quick recovery of the President . He prayed that the Acting President would sustain the fight against corruption and insurgency . Ugochukwu believed that the absence of the President would create some gaps in communication , decision -making and implementation. “ These gaps may lead to some internal bickering and power play . This is bound to happen when those in his management team depart from project Nigeria to pursue personal interest , ” he stated. Aso, the National Publicity Secretary of the Yoruba socio -cultural group , Yinka Odumakin , said the cabal around the President would put pressure on the Acting President , Prof. Yemi Osinbajo . He said , “ The implication of his long stay is that the country would technically pause for the period he is going to be away. There would be a lot of power play with the cabal around the President , breathing down the neck of the Acting President with ‘ the President said ’ even when he did not say . They may even sign things in his name knowing that the Acting President does not have regular access . “ We are in for a season of dual Presidency as the power bloc around the President will maximise this season. The President should be commended for transmitting power to his deputy unlike Yar ’ Adua , who did not transfer power or possibly had his transmission seized by the cabal. ” In his reaction , the President of the NVA , Mashood Erubami , in an interview with The PUNCH in Abuja , said Nigerians should be happy that the evil wishes of some unnamed enemies for the President had not come to pass. He said , “ We should thank God for the message from the President ; a message of hope , which should be well managed to advance the cause of good governance. “ Hitherto , Nigerians were worried that the President was not communicating directly with them as they had to rely on good faith with third party information. “ Now that he can be quoted to have said he will stay longer to rest well before he returns , he is only being truthful and honest with Nigerians . We should all be happy that the evil wishes of the enemies of progress have not come to pass. ” Also , the Executive Secretary Anti- Corruption Network, Ebenezer Oyetakin , lauded the President ’ s statement . He said , “ I am sure that if the situation gets to the extent that he can no longer be the President , the Buhari that I know will obviously take the path of honour and be the first to so declare. Nevertheless , he has obtained annual leave legally; he has transferred Presidential power to his Vice -President as required by the constitution and has informed Nigerians. ” The national leadership of the PDP said it would continue to pray for Buhari . The Acting National Publicity Secretary of the party, Mr . Bernard Mikko, stated this in an interview with one of our correspondents in Abuja on Tuesday. Mikko stated , “ The President ’ s request should be viewed in accordance with our statutes . Though the terms of his vacation have not been made clear to most Nigerians, most Nigerians wish him well. No patriotic Nigerian will wish his President otherwise . “ He can be excused within the ambit of the law . I don’ t know the status of his health and can’ t comment on his physical or mental suitability. “ From the age of 50, who is 100 per cent healthy?” Saraki briefs Senate on visit to Buhari Meanwhile, the Senate President , Bukola Saraki , on Tuesday, briefed members of the Senate on his trip to the United Kingdom to visit Buhari. Saraki , Speaker of the House of Representatives , Mr . Yakubu Dogara; and the Majority Leader of the Senate , Senator Ahmad Lawan, had on Wednesday, last week, met with Buhari , who is on leave in London, attending to his health . When the lawmakers resumed from a three - week recess on Tuesday, the Senate President , during the plenary, first read Buhari’ s letter to the legislature on the extension of his leave . Saraki had received the letter during the recess . It was dated February 5, 2017, the last day of the President ’ s initial 10- day leave . The letter read , “ Further to my letter dated January 18, 2017, in which I notified the distinguished Senate of taking part of my annual leave . “ During my leave , I took the opportunity to have routine check - ups and consult my long -standing doctors in London. “ In the course of the routine examinations, certain test results indicated the need for a course of medications and further appointments have been scheduled for next week I am , therefore , notifying the Distinguished Senate that I am extending my leave until the doctors are satisfied that certain factors are ruled out . In the circumstances , the vice-president will continue to act on my behalf . ” After reading the letter, Saraki said , “ Further to the correspondence from Mr . President , let me also use this opportunity to brief my colleagues on the visit . I led a delegation of myself , the Honourable Speaker and the Majority Leader to visit Mr . President , Buhari, on Wednesday, February 15, to convey the greetings and best wishes of the National Assembly and I am happy to report that we met the President in good spirits; in good health ; chatty as usual ; and conveys his best wishes and hopes to be back very soon . ” |

—Following the Nigerian Army denial that it did not kill 11 members the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, during the group’s rally in support of US President, Donald Trump, on January 20, 2017, IPOB has asked the army to wait for them at the International Criminal Court, ICC, in The Hague. IPOB also accused the army of alternating between calling its outing in Port Harcourt a “protest” and a “rally” at the same time. The group, therefore, said it was only a liar that could describe a rally as a protest, saying that “the Nigerian Army has been caught in another web of lies.” Deputy Director of Army Public Relations of 6 Division of the Nigerian Army, Port Harcourt, Colonel Aminu Iliyasu, had in a statement denied killing of IPOB members and labelled the group as a “criminal gang.” But IPOB spokesmen, Mr Emma Nmezu, and Dr. Clifford Chukwuemeka Iroanya, in their reply to the Army, said it has become customary for the army to kill IPOB members and deny it. “This is not the first, neither is it going to be the last time that the Nigerian Army will kill our members and shamelessly come out to deny it.” IPOB gave a list of its members killed by the Army to include IPOB massacres in Onitsha, Aba, Port Harcourt, Nkpor, Asaba; Shiite massacres in Kaduna and Kano, among others. Part of the IPOB statement read: “International human rights groups have consistently labelled the Nigerian Army as perennial liars incapable of ever telling the truth when it comes to their culpability in the mass execution of unarmed civilians. “IPOB and those who read the haphazardly written statements from Col. Aminu Iliyasu are left wondering how on the one hand he stated that IPOB conducted a rally in support of President Trump while on the other hand, he called it a protest. “IPOB will like to remind this quota-system Colonel that the General Abdulsalami Abubakar-written Nigerian Constitution which he referred to is very explicit on the responsibilities of the Nigerian Armed Forces (not just the Army alone), especially in Section-217(2) and this does not in any way stipulate using live ammunition on peaceful and unarmed civilians. “We will also like to remind Iliyasu that security agencies, media organizations, foreign embassies, and specifically, the Commissioner of Police in Rivers State were all informed ahead of time of the pro-Trump rally, through an official letter signed by the leadership of IPOB. “This Colonel must understand that a rally or even a protest is not an armed rebellion that will warrant deployment of troops of 29 Battalion of Nigerian Army with a mandate to fire live bullets at peaceful and unarmed civilians. “May we ask why the same deployment of troops was not carried out on those who protested against President Trump in Abuja on the same date? “How come troops were not deployed to shoot and kill civilians during the recent “anti-Buhari” protest that was led by the likes of Charles Oputa a.k.a. Charlie Boy? Why must the Hausa-Fulani dominated Nigerian Army and Police regard every IPOB assembly or rally as an opportunity to embark upon some kind of mini Jihad designed to kill as many non-Muslims as possible? “IPOB is extremely pleased that what transpired that day was captured on pictures and videos as most of the unspeakable atrocities of the Nigerian Army and police are. “On his insinuation, borne out of panic, that IPOB will post old videos and pictures from our archives in social media, we advise the Colonel not to worry but to leave the authentication of the evidence we have to the civilized panel of judges at the International Criminal Court, ICC.” “It is reassuring to observe that at least the lying Nigerian Army is aware that all their murderous outrage on January 20, 2017 were captured on video.” |

Nigerians on Monday expressed outrage after it emerged that Indian-packaged garri was being sold in the country. The garri is packed in a 500g bag, which has the picture of a lady and an inscription , ‘ TRS ’ ( Asia ’ s Finest Foods ) on it, with a price tag of N 450. The Executive Director, Natural Nutrient Limited , Sola Adeniyi, expressed dismay at the development in a post entitled , “ Attention: Indian garri being sold in Nigerian supermarkets, ” which he shared on WhatsApp . According to Adeniyi, who is an agribusiness development value chain expert, the sale of the Indian- packaged garri in Nigeria is an absurdity of monumental proportion and a shame. He said , “ Our government and regulatory agencies ( if they still exist ) should cover their faces in shame. I would like to ask : how much were you paid in bribe ? Is this how far we are mentally bankrupt ? We are indeed in a big mess in this nation . Can you imagine imported garri from India now selling in shops in Nigeria and the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control approved this ? “ So , we finally have consigned our dear country to a dumping ground for all forms of Asian mindless madness . Nigeria is the world ’ s largest producer of cassava for crying out loud , but here we are shamelessly displaying Indian- made garri and not corn flakes on our shelves. Nigerians also took to the social media space to condemn the act, one of them writing on Nairaland with the user name , smartiyke78, said , “ I am ashamed of this country called Nigeria . “ The other day , it was imported packaged jollof rice from India or China . As if that embarrassment was not enough, now this is garri . What a shame to all who call themselves leaders and decision makers . Could this be the result of the incessant unprofitable travels the President was making ? “ I just hope Nigeria has not been sold out in the name of some clueless economic partnership . ” Another user, Dauda Abu , wrote, “ Nigeria is the largest producer of cassava. How on earth should we be importing garri into our market? We are not encouraging our industry to grow at all . ” Following the outrage , NAFDAC raided the shop located along Cameron Road, Ikoyi , Lagos . According to the Acting Director- General of NAFDAC, Mrs. Yetunde Oni, the agency’ s officers visited the supermarket on Monday and seized 26 packs of the product for analysis. “ The product has no NAFDAC number. It is said to be from Ghana but packaged in the United Kingdom . The management of the supermarket has been invited for further discussion in our Lagos office and investigation continues, ” she said in a text message in response to an enquiry by our correspondent.

PLEASE CALM DOWN AND READ C hief James Ibori, ex- governor of Delta State, ex-convict of Her Imperial Majesty had a welcome home thanksgiving last weekend. From all accounts, the attendance cut across societal spectrum—the high, the low, the political and a-political, the Lords spiritual and temporal. Before then, his home—country home to qualify it properly because he has many homes in Nigeria and abroad—had been a bee-hive of activities as people queued up to pay homage. In fact, according to a report, the handlers had to manage the crowd by giving out dates to those who wished to visit. The greeting among the elite in the Delta region at some point might have been, ‘have you gone to pay your own homage?’ You would think, judging from the out pour of emotions that he went to the moon or did something exotic for humanity. Or, coming nearer home, that he paid some high price for the good of his community. He was instead incarcerated for bleeding his people, the same people that are coming out to pay homage. If Ibori noticed that very little had changed for the better in the community he left years ago, he kept it to himself. If he noticed that the people looked gaunt and their dresses shabby, he didn’t let on. If he noticed that indeed, his last place of abode was cleaner and better managed than his home town, he is yet to voice that out. If he noticed that his people have long been spiritually and materially imprisoned by the wiles of the elite and that it is time they got out of jail and be liberated, he is yet to champion that noble cause. What he did, instead of contriteness and a pledge to give back in service what he had taken from the community, was to use the hallowed walls of a church, where the Holy Ghost is supposed to be ever present, where Angels are supposed to be continuously ministering, to proclaim his innocence. This man who admitted his guilt in a court of law is sanctimoniously proclaiming his innocence in the court of God and by implication seemed to fear the judgement of man more than that of God. The ministering ‘man of God,’ Archbishop Avwomakpa—his name must be mentioned—on his part, preferred to play to the gallery and fan emotive embers. He used revered names in the Bible, Christian’s Holy Book, to describe the prison returnee. You wonder if he followed the case in any shape or form. You wonder if he heard of Ibori’s earlier sojourn in Britain and the supermarket episode. You wonder if he remembered that another James Ibori was created at a time. I am sure there must have been people in that church who probably felt queasy about what the house of God was turned into. Just as I believe there would be people in Ibori’s camp who might have felt uncomfortable with the whole homecoming arrangements. But none found their voice to speak against what seemed a strong tide. And that is the problem with Nigeria; good people keep quiet when they should cry out and fight from within. Gradually, what should be an aberration becomes the norm; what should be ignoble becomes noble. The result is that the nation slowly loses values that should hold the moral fabric of the society together. It is the same story with Andrew Yakubu, the former Managing Director of the NNPC who locked up almost ten million dollars in a safe. It is highly unlikely that he could have taken away that kind of money in cash without some senior officers being aware. It is also highly unlikely that he is the first MD to have helped himself with Corporation funds. NNPC has become a sieve; leaking money into the hands of its bosses and Ministers. Yet there must be some good men in NNPC who know what is going on but lack the courage to cry out. And if, as it is alleged, that the top hierarchy of NNPC frustrates the refineries because of what it stands to gain through fuel importation and subsidy, then these good men are by their silence complicit in the decay of that rotten corporation. There is currently the story of a former Airforce boss who got a monthly allocation of over five hundred million naira. Air Marshal Mohammed, the former Chief of Air Staff, could not have done it alone. And the fact that he recommended his Director of Finance Air Commodore Salisu Abdullahi to his successor shows that the looting baton passes from one Airforce supremo to the other. Yet the remuneration among the rank and file in our Armed Forces is low and the yearly cry is that the budget allotted to the Armed Forces is insufficient to fund and modernise the forces. There are people in the forces who know what is going on. They know why the planes don’t fly. They know why the ships are not seaworthy. They know why ammunition and combat gears are in short supply. They know why the police cannot fund investigations. They must have the courage to cry out and save our institutions. NEPA is the way it is today because it is a cash cow to be milked by our politicians and technocrats alike. Like our refineries, it is in the interest of some people that the country is not lit up. Until the nefarious stakeholders are exposed and the leakages stopped we will continue to sink money into the light project. Those who know what is going on should have the courage to stand up and be counted. Corruption has eaten deep into our system. Yet there are people in the country who refuse to give or take bribe. There are people who don’t dip their hands into the coffers of state or corporations. They should not be made to look like fools. Let the churches and mosques lead the vanguard in standing up against unexplained wealth and ostentatious lifestyles. Let the banks expose illegal funds that are stashed in their vaults. Let the people stop cheering on the Robin Hoods in their midst. Let the upright judges stand up to the corrupt judges who are tainting the judiciary and get rid of them. Let the government stop treating the symptoms and address the fundamental causes of corruption. Finally, let all good men and women have the courage to say enough is enough to those who loot our money and lord it over us. The collapse of our infrastructure and standard of living can easily be traced to these people. We deserve better roads; better hospitals; better security; better leaders. In short, we deserve better. |
It's only a guilty fellow that will start running when he/she sees a persecutor just passing. It baffles me to see how Buhari supporters try every day just to convince Nigerians of a simple suspicion. If truly an event happens and people fail to believe, why not let time answer them. But when Nigerians are doubtful of a particular event surrounding Buhari's vacation, the presidency will even make matters worse by posting pictures here and there where it is well known to them that picture can't solve the problem.Tinubu visited the President pictures where taken but no video even if when they where exchanging pleasantries if they don't want us to know what they discussed. now Trump called, supporters are busy posting YouTube videos here and there, caption, website and lots more, some don't even sleep again just to discover one thing to make Nigerians believe that Trump called Buhari. My question is why all the worry and restlessness if all is well. A GOAT THAT IS AFRAID WILL TAKE TO HIS HEELS BY MERE HEARING THE SOUND OF THE HORN OF A VEHICLE.HE WHO IS INNOCENT SHOULD NOT BE AFRAID.forgive any error in spelling or grammar it was not noticed |
