The Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex Igbo socio- cultural organization, Thursday described as a disgrace to the Igbo nation, the decision of some Igbo people to beg the president elect, General Muhammadu Buhari for appointments in his government that will take off onMay 29, 2015. President of Ohaneze in Anambra State, Chief Chris Eluomunoh, who is also the chairman of Ohaneze state presidents’ forum for the seven Igbo-speaking states, said at a news conference in Awka that issues of federal appointments were constitutional obligations which every president of Nigeria, irrespective of the voting pattern of a people in an election, must obey. He condemned in its entirety, the move by certain people who claimed to be representing the Igbo to be begging the president-elect for appointments for Ndigbo in his government. According to him, Igbo nation is an integral part on Nigeria and must get their due share in Nigeria, adding that appointing Igbo people into offices should not in any way be regarded as doing them any favour http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/05/its-a- disgrace-on-igbo-to-beg-buhari-for-appointments- ohanaeze/ |
President-elect Muhammadu Buhari has made a solemn promise to Nigerians - that his administration will not betray them. Besides, he spoke of his belief in multi-party democracy. Gen. Buhari, who was receiving a Taraba State delegation, led by the All Progessives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Senator Aisha Alhassan, said the people sacrificed a lot to achieve the success being celebrated across the country. Acknowledging the fact that some people lost in the process, the President-elect said: “We will never betray the people because they have risked everything. Some even lost their lives in this cause to make sure that APC succeeds and that we have a leadership in place that they trust. That is what multi party democracy is all about.” Gen. Buhari promised a broad-based government, saying: “I assure you that the government of the APC, when eventually put in place, will be a competent Nigerian government.” Explaining his belief in multi-partly democracy, the president-elect said: “I will tell you what made me a multi-party democrat. In 1991, after coming out of detention, I was sitting at home and the Soviet Union collapsed. “They were the world power fighting the western world. In technology, they were the first to go to space and they had intercontinental war heads than NATO. They had more sophisticated weapons, but something happened. There was confusion. “Today, there’re 18 countries in the former Soviet Union. That was when I believed that multi-party democratic system is a superior form of governance and that is why I joined democracy. “We have made a big stride this year and I assure you God willing, if we survive the next four years, Nigerians will be in a position to confidently raise their heads up and elect their own representatives and leaders. “They will choose those they want as their representatives from local government, states, to the centre. I will fight for free, fair and credible election because that is why I remained in politics. I thank you very much for the sacrifices you have made to make sure we succeeded.” Gen. Buhari went on: “I think that 2015 will go down in Nigeria’s political history as a glorious year. Nigerians have deliberately understood what is multi party democracy. But we thank God for technology-PVC and card reader. “If not this, luck we had with technology and the insistence of constituencies to make sure they are used, in two political zones where they were subverted, the people wanted to vote, but hey were not allowed to vote. “They continued with what they used to do; retun to their party offices or their siting rooms, write the results, go to radio house and television house and announce the result and say whoever does not want the result should go to court. “How many people can go to court when they are struggling to get the next day’s meal? Where will they get the millions to give to those Senior Advocates of Nigeria? I was able to do it because of the goodwill of Nigerians, which again demonstrated itself this year. “People agreed that I am not a very rich man, but I was lucky that Nigerians believe in me and they put their strength together, voted and made sure that their votes count. I say thanks to the technology. Please continue to support those among you that you feel will go and work for your state and for the country.” On the battle for Taraba governors, he said: “It was a battle well fought and I am very pleased that you have taken the honourable way out. According to the Nigerian constitution, you go to court. I was there three times and ended up in the Supreme Court. “Sometimes, people wonder why I tried so hard. I tried so hard because it is a system I believe in. I believe that multi-party democratic system is the best form of governance with a big caveat that election must be free and fair. Really, this is why I am in it. I was in APP. “I joined partisan politics in April 2002 and on that date, at my ward, I said that those who knew me, and myself, following my career antecedent in the military, if people say that I’ll participate in partisan politics, people would not believe it and I will not also believe it. “But I found myself in it and I never turned back. Within one year, APP gave me the ticket. There were governors, senators and much older people than me, but all the same, I got the ticket. I lost. I was in court for 30 months. In 2007, we tried to have a limited merger and became ANPP and, again, I participated and was told I lost. “ I went to court for 20 months up to the Supreme Court and I felt that my party was not fair to me. While I was in court, the leadership of he party proceeded and took two marginal ministries in late Yar’Adua’s cabinet and an adviser. For that disgraceful behavior by the party leadership, I left the party and we floated the CPC. Again, I attempted in 2011 and lost and, again, I was in court for about eight months and I contested now for the fourth time under APC, having successfully gone through with the merger of the three legacy parties. “So, Aisha, don’t give up. You are younger and this is your first attempt. I contested three times and this is my fourth attempt. I hope that you succeed in the court. I am impressed by the quality of Taraba people you brought here. I think that for all I get and purpose, the whole of Taraba is here and I am very grateful for that inspite of your expensive shopping list .“You said you have gold, you have tantalite, you want your roads to be finished, you want agriculture. If you will, I think I am in trouble. Honestly, I hope you will win in the court.” Speaking earlier, the leader of the delegation, Senator Aisha Alhasan, urged the President-elect to ensure a fair deal for Taraba State in his administration, adding that the state had been unfairly treated in the past |
Following the dwindling resources arising from the decreasing Federal allocation to the state, the Kogi State Government has announced a 40 percent slash in the salary of its workers. The government said the move was part of its measures to meet commitment on the infrastructural development in the state; and necessary in the face of the dwindling federal monthly allocation to the state. The salary cut also affected pensioners, appointed Commissioners, Special Advisers and all other appointed officials, but will not be implemented on staff on grade level 1-6 and Special Assistants. The State Governor, Capt. Idris Wada said the development will enable the State Government to pay salary to all workers rather than owe back log of salary. Vanguard gathered that the State Government allocation from the government averaged N3.7 billion in the past, however received N2.5 billion for the month of April, while its monthly wage bill stands at N3.2 billion. Reacting to the announcement, the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Kogi state has threatened to shut down the state if the state government refuses to rescind on his plan to cut down the April salaries of the state civil servants. The leadership of the Union said they have met with the State Governor, Idris Wada on the government’s plan to cut salaries state worker by 40 percent, warned that any attempt by State Government to pay 60 percent salaries to the workers for the month of April, would be deemed as a bonus to workers. The Labour who made this known through its latest bulletin issued on Wednesday and signed by the State Chairman of NLC, Comrade Onuh Edoma, TUC state Chairman, Comrade Abdulazez Ganiyu and JNC Chairman, Comrade Aaron Ameji said the union and the workers would not accept any payment short of 100 percent salary payment for the month of April 2015 |
The Presidency, has chided the All Progressives Congress, APC, over its claim that President Jonathan is running the economy aground before handing over, saying “the allegation is immature, reckless and out of tune with the President’s desire and patriotic commitment to a peaceful transfer of power.” Special Adviser to the President on Political Affairs, Prof. Rufai Alkali, who reacted to APC’s allegation, yesterday, urged the party to talk less and plan more as the nation moves towards May 29 inauguration date. Alkali reminded APC that “governance is a serious business,” adding that “with the sudden and unexpected concession of victory to them, it appears that the APC is beginning to face the full reality of managing the great challenges of a complex nation. “Their recent, frequent and unnecessary attacks on the President clearly shows that they are losing their nerves and are beginning to lay foundation to justify their failures in the near future and we want to remind them that Nigerians are not ready to accept any excuses for their failure. They promised to bring change, so they must bring positive change to the well-being of Nigerians and urgently too. |
Following the successful conduct of the 2015 polls, there are indications that the United States Government will send a large, high-powered delegation, which may be led by either US First Lady Michelle Obama, Vice-President Joe Biden or Secretary of State, John Kerry, to the inauguration of Major-General Muhammadu Buhari on May 29 as Nigeria’s fifth democratically elected president. Confirming this on Wednesday, a source in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs told THISDAY that it was very likely that the delegation might be led by either Mrs. Obama, the US vice-president or Kerry. He said the ministry was aware that Nigeria’s Ambassador to the US, Prof. Ade Adefuye was scheduled to have a meeting with the US State Department at 2 pm (EST) on Monday where the issue of the delegation will be discussed and finalised. Since Buhari’s victory at the polls and the peaceful transition in the country following President Goodluck Jonathan’s concession of defeat, several countries have shown a renewed interest in Nigeria and have moved to improve ties with the incoming administration. Relations between Nigeria and the US, in recent months, have been frosty following the latter’s reluctance to provide concrete assistance in the war against the Boko Haram insurgency. Things got to a head last year when the US blocked Nigeria’s attempt to procure American-manufactured Cobra helicopters from Israel for the war against Boko Haram. The US had expressed concern over massive human rights abuses by the Nigerian military in its prosecution of the war in the North-east. The source in the foreign ministry said the US is now eager to turn the situation around, as it considers Nigeria an important ally on the African continent. When contacted on the issue, Adefuye confirmed that the US Government had indicated that it will send a senior delegation to Buhari’s inauguration, but could not state who would lead the team. He informed THISDAY that the US has expressed satisfaction with the conduct and outcome of the elections and was also of the view that “democracy is gaining grounds in Nigeria”. “In this respect, several interest groups comprising the White House, US State Department, Congress and the business community, have indicated interest in attending General Buhari’s inauguration,” he said. He added that the Government of Nigeria through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had also sent invitations to the various groups for the inauguration. Adefuye could not, however, confirm who would lead the US delegation to Nigeria, stating that the team would be made known to the Nigerian Embassy and Foreign Affairs Ministry in due course |
