White’ or ‘Coloured’ Vitamin C Tablets: Which is more effective?

Vitamin C is also known as Ascorbic acid. It is the belief of some in this part of the world that the ‘White’ vitamin C tablets are more effective than ‘Coloured’ Vitamin C tablets especially when dealing with symptoms of cold and catarrh.

But does the colour of a tablet determine whether it will be more effective or less effective?

The coloured vitamin C (chewable Ascorbic acid) tablets and the white Vitamin C tablets usually come in the same strength. That is, when you look at the pack of the common ones we buy, we see same name (Ascorbic acid/vitamin C) and same strength (100mg). This means that they basically contain the same drug in the same amount and will work in the same way.

There are however differences in their physical characteristics.

For the chewable or coloured vitamin C tablets, some amount of sugar, colourants and flavouring are added. This makes them easier to chew, sweet to taste, they come in bright colours and have a pleasant smell. Little wonder that this type is loved by children and some adults alike (like myself)!

The white Vitamin C tablets, on the other hand, has a fairly medicinal smell and acidic taste. Some adults prefer them though, since they contain little or no sugar. However, the boring off-white colour makes it unattractive to children as it reminds them of their previous experiences with bitter medications!

In summary, since both vitamin C products are tablets and come in the same strength, taking the same quantity gives the same therapeutic results. One is not more effective than the other.

This means that they basically contain the same drug in the same amount and will work in the same way.

Lovingly, though in consideration for our senses of sight, smell and taste, these two types of Vitamin C tablets are available to make the drug experience memorable and worthwhile.
