Another Nigerian, Femi Seun Ogunode, has won the 400m Gold medal for Qatar in the 16th edition of Asian Games in China on Monday 22nd November, 2010. He follows the growing list of Nigerian sportsmen winning laurels for another country. Francis Obikwelu ran for Portugal in the Olympics and many others.
Most Athletes blame Nigerian goverment neglect for the Nationalty swap.

Travel / Norway Is The Best Country To Live In - UN by rotimiland(m): 12:24am On Nov 05, 2010
Thu Nov 4, 10:55 am ET

UNITED NATIONS (AFP) – The going only seems to get better in Norway which on Thursday was named by the United Nations as the country with the best quality of life for a record-matching eighth time.

The UN's annual A-to-Z of global wealth, poverty, health and education highlighted in its 20th anniversary edition though that despite "growth surges" in the Asia-Pacific region, it is becoming ever more difficult to break into the rich club of nations.

Oil-rich Norway -- with its 81.0 years of life expectancy, average annual income of 58,810 dollars and 12.6 years of schooling -- has now topped the Human Development Index (HDI) for all but two years since 2001.

It is not the best in any individual category -- average income in Liechtenstein for example is a wallet-busting 81,011 dollars -- but Norway's all-round performance gave it a crushing superiority in the UN Development Programme (UNDP) annual rankings.

Australia, New Zealand, the United States and Ireland took the following places in the top five. Zimbabwe came bottom of the 169 nations ranked, behind Mozambique, Burundi, Niger and Democratic Republic of Congo.

Zimbabwe, where in stark contrast life expectancy is just 47 years and per capita income 176 dollars, has come bottom of the table for the past five years.

DR Congo, Zambia and Zimbabwe have seen their HDI value fall below 1970 levels in the four decades since, said the study.

"These countries offer lessons on the devastating impact of conflict, the AIDS epidemic and economic and political mismanagement," said UNDP administrator Helen Clarke, the former New Zealand prime minister.

The study aims to give a broader assessment of quality of life than just income -- by including, health, education, gender equality and political freedom -- and its lead writer Jeni Klugman said most of the world has seen "dramatic progress" since 1970.

Average life expectancy rose from 59 to 70 years, primary school enrollment grew from 55 to 70 percent, and per capita incomes doubled to more than 10,000 dollars. Many of the poorest countries achieved some of the greatest gains, she said.

"Overall they are healthier, more educated and wealthier and more power to appoint and hold their leaders accountable than ever before," Klugman added.

"But some countries have suffered serious setbacks, particularly in health -- sometimes erasing the gains of several decades," Klugman added.

"The recent global financial crisis was a shock for many, especially for those who have lost their jobs."

The nations which have risen most up the rankings in the 20 years that the report has been produced include "growth miracles" such as China, which has risen eight places in the last five years to 89th, Indonesia and South Korea.

But there is also Nepal, Oman and Tunisia "where progress in the non-income dimensions of human development has been equally remarkable," the study said.

The new good life nations have taken different paths to success.

"Many countries have done well in the long term by emphasizing health and education; others have strived for rapid economic growth, though sometimes with a high cost to environmental sustainability."

In six sub-Saharan African countries and three in the former Soviet Union, life expectancy is now below 1970 levels. Mainly because of HIV and tougher conditions for adults in former communist nations.

And even though incomes have grown dramatically, the poor nations are not necessarily making the same economic strides as they are in health and education.

"On average rich countries have grown faster than poor ones over the past 40 years.

"The divide between developed and developing countries persists: a small subset of countries has remained at the top of the world income distribution and only a handful of countries that started out poor have joined that high income group," the report concluded.

@ Dafuture,
Thanks for that long but interesting one. God bless you. You spoke objectively. We have no place like home. We will all participate in the Nigerian project. I could not discourage anybody abroad from going home permanently. One just need to understand the terrain very well and be very careful.
I have my projects in Nigeria too. I could move in if I and my organisation get our entitlements by mid next year. It is enough to make a drastic change in Nigeria. An average Nigerian is self-centred, they don't care if others use candles as source of electricity. Once their noice-less generating sets serve them 24/7, Nigeria is okay. This is also reflected in our leaders. What I hate in people is to know the truth and hide it.
I must not say because I live in Banana island, Lagos and i can afford 40million naira car, so Nigeria is okay for all. If I do that I am selfish and wicked.
I must look at the percentage of people living in penury compared to those in affluence, before concluding.
Do you know my organisation was in different law courts in Nigeria and even in America for solid 9YEARS (another Nigerian judicial flaw) with our debtor (Multinational company)? . We thank God we finally won the case late last year.
I have the belief that Nigeria will be great, whether our leaders like it or not.
I reeled out my previous opinions based on the thread topic. It is a personal decision and meant for the time being.

What has this list of historical and non-historical complaints got to do with the poster's question which is inherently very personal.
So if you have a very good job offer or business opportunity you would not move back because of this your generic "whine and moan" list.
For example with enough "pay" issues like electricity and water should be the least of your problems when there are so many convenient alternatives to mains power supply.

@ Tensor, what did you mean many convenient alternatives?. If they are available and convenient as you stated, why did many manufacturing companies closed down because of huge cost of running using those electricity alternatives. Where is Dunlop now?. If you are not convinced, go to Agbara industrial estate and check those comatosed companies.
Ask Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN). They will inform you better.
So if i am collecting enough salary, i would not prefer to pay less on a constant power supply?
You dare not play down the importance of electricity to the development of a Nation.
If Harry Akande has his businesses abroad, don't think he is a fool.
That's my opinion and i could not force it into your throat. Likewise must you do same to me.

You deceptively edited the original title " I PAY MY AMERICAN LECTURERS, $1MILLION PER MONTH - ATIKU " ,
to suit your dumb self.
You think I am a slowpoke like you. I should come home because Atiku is paying American lecturers $1m. I can see you are a "never-do-well". Instead of you to condemn his actions, you are flaunting it. He stole our money and now using same to pay foreigners. Can you evaluate your level of reasoning, now?

@ Atampakoeg, it's either you are not skilled in the use of English words or you are just being deceitful as regards your response to my comment. How can you say my observation is a complete falsehood. Do you know the meaning of COMPLETE FALSEHOOD?.
So, my claim that a large number of bank workers were sacked in Nigeria is false? That politicians renege in their promises, is also false? That Lagos/Ibadan expressway is not in best shape is also false? That our votes during elections no more count again is also false?
Read my comment very well I said such happens abroad but it's MINIMAL.
I am a Nigerian and a proud one, but window-dressing Nigeria when majority of our leaders refuse to do anything, is what i can't do.

Nigeria for now to me is for those that understand the terrain. If you want to live a righteous life and hit it big, you better stay abroad. Everywhere you go in Nigeria, once people know you are back from abroad, believe me most times they are ready to rip you off.
There is no place like home, we agree. But what do we do when the environment we call home, is not encouraging.
Dont tell me i am not acquainted with the number of:
- Times PHCN interrupts electricity in a week
- Pot holes on Lagos-Ibadan expressway, that caused loss of lives in a year
- Times i voted during elections and my vote did not count
- Companies that closed down between 1999 till date
- Human right activists that lost their lives in the battle to save Nigeria, without acknolewdging them
- Times politicians promise us goodies yet nothing happened
- Graduates roaming the streets with no good jobs
- Times we recycle the same people as ministers
- Bank workers that lost their jobs
- Times Police request 'something for the boys' before they protect you
etc, etc, etc

We all know some of those things may happen abroad too, but it is minimal. Dont let us deceive ourselves, Nigeria needs revolution.

Politics / Oni Vs Fayemi: Ekiti Governorship Final Judgement Today by rotimiland(m): 8:14pm On Oct 14, 2010
Three weeks after the adoption of submissions by lawyers, the Court of Appeal sitting in Ilorin, capital of Kwara State, North Central Nigeria, will tomorrow deliver judgment over the governorship tussle between Governor Segun Oni of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, and Dr. Kayode Fayemi of the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN.

The chief bailiff of the Appeal Court sent a notice of the impending judgement via SMS to the lawyers to the two parties today. The lawyers had closed their cases on 23 September.

Fayemi is challenging the return of Oni in the 2009 rerun election held in 63 of 177 wards in the state.

The ACN candidate had filed a petition on 2 June 2009 against Oni’s victory in the 27 April and 5 May 2009 rerun elections.

The reconstituted governorship rerun Tribunal, in a split decision of three to two last year, affirmed Oni’s victory.

The judgment delivered by the tribunal chairman, Justice Hamma Barka, upheld Oni’s election on the grounds that Fayemi’s alleged electoral malpractices were not substantial enough to invalidate the results of the polls.

The majority ruling declared Oni winner with 109,000 to Dr. Kayode Fayemi’s 106,000 after deductions of unlawful votes were made.

The minority ruling opposed this by upholding that the petitioners had duly and dutifully proved their case. Two judges supported the minority judgement while three judges endorsed the majority ruling.

Oni’s election as governor has been contentious since 2007 with Fayemi challenging his victory rigorously at the Election Petition Tribunal in Ekiti State.

Oni was thrown out of office after the court of appeal upturned the decision of a lower court after the 14 April 2007 governorship election.

The 2009 rerun election in Ekiti State was marred by violence and intimidation, with many journalists attacked.

The Resident electoral commissioner, Mrs. Ayoka Adebayo, initially refused to announce the results of the re-run election. She claimed that she was under pressure to announce a doctored result.

She temporarily went into hiding, re-emerged and declared Oni winner.

Tomorrow’s judgement will be delivered by five judges of the Court. It is expected that the special panel may be headed by Justice Ayo Salami, the president of the court.

@ Fynguy, thanks for the pictures,
Even if Obama brings goodies to Nigerians, they would hurriedly say, it is a Scam. Because he has African origin.
Instead of people to do thorough investigation, they would sit down and as usual say it's a Scam. We should not rush at offers, we should reason sensibly and take action.
Fynguy haters should at least reason like tkb417 for a moment.

TKB417, said
but how come the case went as far as Mobil and Commandclem appearing at the supreme court

who is scamming who? will they wanna scam and still be going to the courts?

Fynguy , you impressed me with this:

fyneguy:

Invisible

Can we atleast work with facts rather than misconjectures?

1. Invisible, do you honestly think a scammer with  traceable office addresses and a national newspaper as product, which government officials    attended its launch, would be foolish enough to upload fake documents of such a notable company as Mobil, on its website, and also announced
same at the launch?

2. Do you honestly think Mobil would not disclaim the document and report Comandclem to EFCC or NPF to cause the arrest of the officials, especially given the litigations Mobil suffered, if indeed the documents were fake?

3 Do you honestly think a scammer would dare upload fake documents involving Presidency and a named Minister, with references to Mobil letter of Acceptance , and a breakdown of the amount agreed etc on his website for public consumption?

4.Do you honestly think a scammer would be bold enough to announce on Ogun State radio station  that Mobil has agreed to pay $236.9 billion and
Mobil seems to be a part of the scam by keeping quiet on the matter?

Invisible, I raised those questions so you know that there are grounds for both opposing and supporting views. Hence, let Mobil come out to disown the documents and also get Comandclem's officials  arrested in Public interest.

Lest I forget, my offer of $2,000 was not meant to bruise your ego, and did not warrant your arrogant response. It was just to let you know I was cocksure of my claims. On a lighter note, if you are spending over $2,000 on your dogs, I hope you are spending much more on charity.

fyneguy:

lol Invisible

Calm down- will yah?

If you are in Lagos, drive down to any newspaper stand and pick a copy of The Liberation and look for the publishers' details. I suppose that will dispel your doubt on ownership.

As per the number of people who graced the occasion, I only took  pictures of people very close to the dancers. Behind me were 6-7 other canopies filled with people. It escaped my mind to snap them. Infact I had got back home before I realised I did not take pictures of policemen and Lastma officials with their vehicles.

Let me also correct you- There is no case in court anymore. Mobil did not appeal against the ruling of December 9 last year. I hope you know you have just 90 days within which you can appeal against a court ruling. If you can provide any proof of an appeal filed by mobil this year, I will pay you $2,000.

Pls tell them again.
Business / Oceanic Ex-boss Cecilia Ibru Jailed by rotimiland(m): 10:38am On Oct 09, 2010
A Federal High Court in Lagos on Friday sentenced a former Chief Executive Officer of Oceanic Bank International Plc, Mrs. Cecilia Ibru, to 18 months imprisonment without an option of fine for granting $20m and N2bn credit facilities above the approved limit by the Central Bank of Nigeria.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission had prosecuted the ex-CEO on a 25-count charge of financial crimes before she entered into a plea bargaining with the anti-graft agency and pleaded guilty to a reduced three-count charge on Friday.

The Chief Judge of the FHC, Justice Dan Abutu, thereafter convicted Ibru on the said three-count charge and ordered the forfeiture of her N191bn assets comprising 49 properties in Nigeria, United States and Dubai, United Arab Emirates, to a Federal Government agency, the Assets Management Corporation of Nigeria.

The forfeited properties include shares in over 100 firms that are listed and not listed on the Nigerian Sock Exchange.

The CJ added that the convict was sentenced to a six-month imprisonment on each of the counts, saying that the terms would run concurrently.

The development indicated that the ex-banker would only spend six months in Ikoyi Prisons.

But the CJ added a caveat when he directed the prison authorities to take the convict to a highbrow hospital, Reddington Hospital, Victoria Island, Lagos, for continuation of treatment, following a passionate appeal by Ibru‘s lead lawyer, Prof. Taiwo Osipitan (SAN).

Osipitan, who led Mr. Wale Akoni (SAN) and other lawyers, had during an

(plea for leniency), urged the court to take judicial notice of the fact that his client was suffering from chronic cardiac problem, saying that specialists in the hospital had to remove some gadgets from Ibru in order to allow her to come to court and take her plea.

He added that there was an agreement between the parties on his client‘s health status, urging the court to direct the prison authorities to return her to the hospital upon conviction.

He raised the alarm that his client‘s situation was critical and urged the court to avoid an unfortunate situation where a former member of the House of Representatives, Morris Ibekwe, who was in a similar situation, was ignored on the grounds that he was feigning sickness but eventually died.

Osipitan claimed that his client built the bank from nothing to something, saying that her prayer was that the bank should continue to grow while she attended to her failing health.

The appearance of the convict, who was assisted into the courtroom by her relatives in a blue skirt suit, showed that she was indisposed, as the court had to allow a doctor to attend to her during the proceeding.

But the lead lawyer to the EFCC, Mr. Kola Awodein (SAN), who led Dr. Konyinsola Ajayi, SAN, Mr. Damien Dodo (SAN), Mr. Godwin Obla and Mr Rotimi Jacobs, informed the court that justice was a three-way issue, saying that justice must be done on the case.

The senior advocate had earlier told the court that there was an agreement and urged the court to forfeit the properties attached to section VI of the settlement agreement to AMCON.

The CJ said, ”The accused is hereby convicted and sentenced to six months imprisonment on each of the three-count charge. The sentence is to run concurrently. In addition, all the assets set out in section VI of the settlement agreement are herby forfeited to AMCON.

“The prison authorities shall, not later than two hours after receiving the convict into their custody, take the convict to Reddington Hospital from where she was brought to court to continue her treatment until she is certified fit by the hospital authority to continue to serve her sentence in the prison.”

Ibru was sacked by the CBN along with the managing directors of four other banks on Aug. 14, 2009, following allegations of corruption, bad corporate governance practices and mismanagement of public funds.

The CBN had said last year that Oceanic Bank had a total non-performing loan of 278bn, which was 37 per cent of the total non-performing loan of the first set of rescued banks.

The CBN governor, Mr. Lamido Sanusi had said in an interview, “We looked at the institutions and saw in their books huge non-performing loans and when we entered the institutions, we discovered that 75 per cent of the non-performing loans were given to the companies directly related to the CEOs of those institution.”

The CBN alleged that Ibru engaged 19,000 workers for Oceanic Bank through a job consultancy firm fronting for her and the bank did not need such employees.

The CBN alleged that Ibru engaged 19,000 workers for Oceanic Bank through a job consultancy firm fronting for her and the bank did not need such employees.

tkb417:

The whole saga is confusing

but that letter from Mobil looks fake to me

whats the plot? or does Commandclem genuinely have a claim with Mobil. what did they sell and what did Mobil buy?
i read somewhere Commandclem could be liable to a receivable of 3 billion USD from mobil shocked shocked shocked shocked

@labiyemmy:

whats the big deal about double decker buses - bush people rants.

Some even think it is not in Naija - back in the 80s- they were all over the place. So?

@ Labiyemmy, I think you have forgotten the core word in the topic. No one is saying it's a big deal to travel in the bus. Remember, all required is your First experience on Double-decker bus. Please don't insult anyone here.

More comments please.
