Edo Decides2024: “We Don’t Want Midnight Results Announcement” – PDP Tells INEC

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has warned the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) against announcing the results of the September 21 governorship election in Edo State at midnight.

The party has also vowed to defend their votes with their lives.

Acting National Chairman, Illiya Damagum, made the declaration during the grand finale of the PDP campaign in Edo, where he presented the party’s flag to governorship candidate, Dr. Asue Ighodalo.

He said, “To INEC, we don’t want that midnight results announcement. We will be vigilant and make sure that it doesn’t happen.”

“And, we know they will rig the election, this is not a threat, but we are very serious and we will defend our votes with our blood and everything.

“To the citizens of this country, please watch the election of Edo, it will be a test for our democracy. If they miss it here, it means they are looking for anarchy. We know they will attempt to do so, but we will resist them.”

He called on party supporters to vote en masse and protect their votes, stressing that the Edo election would be a test for Nigeria’s democracy.

The warning follows the controversy surrounding the midnight announcement of the 2023 presidential election results. It can be recalled the candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, Bola Tinubu was declared winner by INEC.

Chairman of the PDP National Campaign Council and Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, also warned against compromising the electoral process, urging Edo residents to vote for Ighodalo. He stated that the party cannot be intimidated and will tell them they know how to win elections, and nobody will rig them out.

Peter Obi Accuses Tinubu Of Causing Fuel Crisis In Nigeria

Former Anambra governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has strongly criticised President Bola Tinubu’s administration for what he describes as wasteful spending amid widespread poverty in Nigeria.

Speaking during an interview with News Central TV, Obi highlighted the dire condition of 38 million Nigerians on the verge of extreme hunger, accusing the government of failing to address key development challenges.

“You cannot ask people to fast while you are feasting,” Obi said, referencing the government’s expenditure on luxury projects.

Among the wasteful expenses, he cited a new presidential jet costing $100 million, N21 billion for renovating the vice president’s lodge, and N15 billion allocated for building the National Assembly clinic.

Indonesia Govt Frees Nigerian On Death Row After Executing Four

In what appears to be a miracle, the government of Indonesia has freed a Nigerian, Emmanuel Ihejirika, on death row in that country.

Ihejirika, who was previously sentenced to death for drug trafficking has been in prison for several years.

His release comes years after Indonesia executed four Nigerians, along with an Indonesian and a British citizen.

According to a statement released by Gabriel Odu in the Public Relations Unit of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, NiDCOM, Ihejirika regained his freedom following the efforts of a Nigerian lawyer, Emmanuel Isha Ogebe, based in Washington DC.

His case generated attention some years ago after a Nigerian delegation, which included former Foreign Affairs minister, Ojo Madueke and Abike Dabiri-Erewa, then a member of the House of Representatives intervened by visiting Indonesian prisons to seek clemency for Nigerians on death row.

CRISIS: Security Guard at APP Secretariat Shot Amidst Political Conflict in Rivers State (PHOTOS)

A security guard at the Action People’s Party (APP) secretariat in Rivers State has been shot amidst a deepening political crisis in the state.

The details of the attack were disclosed by Hon. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, Opposition Coalition Spokesman and Member of the National Assembly.

It should be noted that key among the political crisis in Rivers State is the one which pits Governor Siminalayi Fubara against his predecessor Nyesom Wike over the alleged control of state resources.

Reports indicate that Fubara plans to join the APP due to Wike’s control of the structure of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the state. Supporters of Fubara are also allegedly planning to join the APP ahead of the upcoming council polls.

In a statement titled “STOP THIS DEMOCRACY BY BOMBS AND GUNS”, Ugochinyere condemned the recent attack.

He revealed that the APP’s Rivers State party secretariat was attacked with heavy gunfire, leaving the head of security critically injured.

He wrote:

STOP THIS DEMOCRACY BY BOMBS AND GUNS.

Late last night I received a distress call from the National Chairman of one of the rising opposition political parties Action People’s Party (APP) that their Rivers State Party Secretariat was under attack with heavy gun shots raining from every corner with the head of security of the Party already shot. As it would turn out, the bullet fortunately pierced via his buttocks. He is graciously alive but critically lying at the hospital.

This attack is coming few weeks after a bomb was detonated at this same party office that left the building partially damaged and just few days after it’s renovation heavily armed gunmen opened fire with intent to kill everyone on sight. This is same method and approach used by pro-Wike supporters who during a protest carried bomb that later detonated among themselves injuring the carrier of the bomb and uptill now the police have been unable to deal with the sponsors of this daylight killers who think that the only way to regain political power that they have lost is to kill and main innocent citizens.

Let it be known that no desperate individual or group can intimidate the opposition in their defence of democracy in Rivers State and there is nothing that can ever lead to removal of the Governor even if they detonate nuclear bomb and set fire on the state as they have publicly declared.

I am calling on the president to remember the political crisis of the 60 and 80s that saw desperadoes descend on the states and regions with unimaginable crises for democracy.

PoliticsConsumer Commission Reveals Plan To Regulate Food Prices In Nigeria by Roving1(op): 8:45pm On Sep 04, 2024
Consumer Commission Reveals Plan To Regulate Food Prices In Nigeria

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has refuted allegations regarding its intention to regulate the prices of food products and other goods within the Nigerian market.

LeadNaija understands that the clarification was prompted by concerns raised by the Organised Private Sector and other stakeholders regarding the commission’s recent instruction to businesses to cease practices such as price gouging and price fixing.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by its Director of Special Duties and Strategic Communication, Ondaje Ijagwu, FCCPC reiterated that its mandate does not involve price control but rather ensures fair market operations.

It emphasized that its recent directives are exclusively focused on preventing exploitative behaviours and fostering a competitive environment.

“We categorically assert that prices in a competitive marketplace are determined solely by the forces of supply and demand. Price control is entirely outside the scope of our responsibilities.

“We have never considered, nor will we ever consider, intervening in the market to regulate prices. Any claims to the contrary are baseless, Full Details” it said.

The Commission underscored that, although external elements like fluctuations in foreign exchange rates and the elimination of fuel subsidies have notably influenced pricing dynamics, these do not serve as valid justifications for exploitative behaviors that detrimentally affect consumers.

Indeed, it noted that these elements undoubtedly play a role in shaping pricing strategies. Yet, the statement further elaborated that they do not absolve or legitimize exploitative practices that are detrimental to consumer interests.

Furthermore, the FCCPC brought to attention a pertinent case within the cement sector to underscore the necessity of regulatory intervention.

“Abdul Samad Rabiu, Chairman of BUA Cement, disclosed that despite efforts by his company to sell cement at a fair price of N3,500 per bag, dealers inflated prices to as much as N7,000 to N8,000 per bag.

“This situation exemplifies the kind of exploitative conduct that the FCCPC is committed to addressing,” the commission noted.

The FCCPC reassured the business community that its actions are not intended to suppress private enterprise but to protect consumers from harmful practices.

“The FCCPC does not seek to suppress private enterprise; our role is to ensure that the market operates on principles of fairness, transparency, and accountability,” the statement read.

To allow businesses time to adjust their practices, the FCCPC has granted a one-month moratorium before enforcement begins.

“We have granted a one-month moratorium before enforcement begins, providing businesses with the necessary time to adjust their practices and ensure full compliance with laws aimed at protecting consumers and fostering fair competition,” it stated.

Nigerian Celebrity Sold Kidney In Egypt To Upgrade His Laptop - UK journalist Reveals

Mark Lobel, a freelance journalist from the United Kingdom, has narrated how an unnamed Nigerian disc jockey sold his organ in Egypt to raise money to upgrade his laptop.

Lobel, a former BBC Nigeria correspondent, disclosed this in a documentary on Nigerian former lawmaker Senator Ike Ekweremadu.

The documentary, titled 'How Sen Ekweremadu was arrested in London for organ harvesting' and produced by a Nigerian seasoned journalist Chude Jideonwo, revealed some background details of events leading to the Ekweremadus ordeal.

Recall that the former Deputy Senate President, alongside his wife, Beatrice and a medical doctor, Obinna Obetta, was sentenced in the UK last year for organ trafficking involving a Nigerian male victim.

The trio were found guilty of conspiring to arrange the travel of the 21-year-old young man to exploit him for his body part, his kidney to be precise.

UK journalist shocked by Nigerian experience

Following their sentencing, which reverberated around the UK as the convicts were the first Africans to be nailed under the United Kingdom’s Modern Slavery Act, Lobe decided to dig deeper into the story and journeyed down to Nigeria to extract first-hand information.

However, the freelance journalist unearthed some shocking revelations which exposed the desperation of some Nigerians and the risks they put themselves through in their quest to make money.

"I was shocked by what I found in Nigeria and shocked by how the country has changed over the past ten years. And I was shocked by what some people were prepared to do for their kidneys, particularly one person I met there," he said.

UK journalist shocked by organ trade by Nigerians

Lobe recalled his interaction with a computer merchant in Nigeria, whose customer had travelled to Egypt to sell his kidney to raise money to better his life.

"We actually met the gentleman who owned the computer store and he was selling second-hand computers and someone had come up to him to explain that the money that he was going to give him for a laptop so that he could become a DJ and stop the manual work that he was doing, had come from the fact that he had sold his kidney.

PoliticsAPP Ask Governor Fubara To Join Party For 2027 Election Guber Race by Roving1(op): 2:33pm On Aug 25, 2024
The Action Peoples Party (APP) has extended an invitation to Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, encouraging him to consider running for re-election under its banner in the 2027 governorship race.

Despite this invitation, the APP emphasized that Fubara is neither a member nor the owner of the party.

The APP Chairman in Rivers State, Sunny Wokekoro, made this appeal during a solidarity visit from the party’s former leadership, led by Kenneth Atata, at the APP secretariat in Port Harcourt on Saturday.

Wokekoro expressed confidence that the APP would make a significant impact in the upcoming local government elections on October 5, signaling the party’s intent to reshape the political landscape in Rivers State.

Reflecting on his political journey, Wokekoro, who previously belonged to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), criticized the PDP’s current state.

He remarked that the party is no longer a viable option for politicians who are genuinely committed to the state’s and the country’s progress, arguing that the PDP has lost its relevance.

“I was a founding member of the PDP. I started by being a G-34 coordinator in Port Harcourt. I was a foundation member of that party. (With) the recent events in the country regarding the party’s administration, that party (PDP) is not supposed to house or to still retain any person who has morals. Any person who has integrity should have left that party by now.”

He clarified misconceptions about Governor Fubara’s association with the APP, noting, “There is one impression I must have to correct in this gathering; the impression that Governor Siminalayi Fubara is a member of this party or that he owns this party. This party has been in existence way back since 2017. It predates any of us who have just joined the party.”

CrimeActivist Mahdi Shehu Reveals Inside Details Of NIA Dg’s Resignation by Roving1(op): 2:12pm On Aug 25, 2024
Activist Mahdi Shehu Reveals Inside Details Of NIA DG’s Resignation

Activist and whistleblower Mahdi Shehu has revealed why Ahmed Rufai, the Director-General (DG) of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) resigned on Saturday.

According to Mahdi, Ahmed Rufai, who held the position since April 2017, was a key figure among former President Buhari’s appointees, known for his influence.

Mahdi claimed that Rufai’s resignation traces back to 2017, when a sting operation was orchestrated by certain northern power brokers, involving the then EFCC Chairman, Ibrahim Magu.

According to him, the operation targeted the NIA’s Lagos office, resulting in the controversial removal of large sums of money—$43 million and £34 million.

Mahdi alleged that part of the operation’s intent was to create a vacancy at the NIA, ultimately leading to Ahmed Rufai’s appointment as DG, despite an ongoing court case by Ambassador Eke Ayodele, the former DG of NIA.

Mahdi noted that Ayodele was eventually cleared of any wrongdoing in 2023 and was ordered by the court to be reinstated.

He suggested that political considerations, particularly the upcoming 2023 presidential elections, influenced the decision to retain Ahmed Rufai in his position temporarily. He also hinted at promises made by President Tinubu to reinstate Ayodele after the elections.

He wrote on X: ”In April 2017, in a deliberately designed sting operation to create a vacuum by force and subterfuge at the NIA, initiated by Sabiu tunde and two other northern cabals, Magu, the then Efcc Chairman using an insider informant from NIA operations unit, was drafted to invade the lagos operational office of the NIA, which he forcefully broke into and removed $43m and £34m.

”$10m was allegedly reported to have been “stolen” out of the “recovery” when it was taken for custody at the CBN by an NIA accounts staff who was silently transferred out. Don’t ask me if the $10m was returned.

”Even before the report of the presidential investigation was submitted and in spite of the existing court case instituted by Ayodele Eke, Buhari was misled into appointing Ahmed Rufai as the New DG NIA.

”As a reward, Tunde Sabiu, who was never a member of the intelligence community, was rewarded with the post of Assistant Director at the NIA while still holding the post of PA to C in C and posted to the villa. To date, he is a staff of the NIA just to give him a soft landing.

”Eke Ayodele, who was suspended in April 2017 by Buhari, pending the outcome of the investigation, went to court to contest his indictment arising from Magu’s raid.

”In 2023, the court cleared Ambassador Eke Ayodele from any wrongdoing and ordered that he be reinstated back to his seat as DG NIA being a statutory tenure appointment with constitutional favour.

Good News: Adamawa Gov Commence Payment Of ₦70,000 New Minimum Wage

Fintiri, Deputy React As Supreme Court Delivers Final Judgment On Adamawa Governorship Dispute

Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri’s led government of Adamawa State has initiated the disbursement of the ₦70,000 minimum wage recently approved by President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Recall that President Tinubu recently signed the new Minimum Wage bill into law following the approval of the Senate.

This development comes after extensive discussions with organized labour.

Despite some governors expressing their inability to meet the ₦70,000 minimum wage due to economic constraints, Governor Fintiri has taken the lead by commencing payments for state employees starting in August 2024, with a commitment that local government workers will receive the increased salary by September.

LeadNaija  understands that this decision has led to widespread joy among civil servants in the state.

Various sources, including state employees who have already received their salaries, confirmed this positive change to Daily Trust on Saturday.

Many workers have expressed gratitude to the governor for honouring his commitment, referring to him as a “man of his word.”

The rollout of the new minimum wage is being celebrated as a notable accomplishment for the Fintiri administration, which has earned the moniker “Fresh Air Government” from its supporters.

About 100 sacked staff of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) have sued the apex bank at the National Industrial Court seeking payment for damages.

Leadnaija has gathered that about 200 bank staff of the CBN were sacked, in May, by the Yemi Cardoso administration as part of the bank’s re-organization strategy.

The sacked staff are among other things seeking full payment of their monthly salaries, allowances and all other financial benefits they should have been entitled to if they were still in the employment of the bank, from the time their employments were terminated to the time they should have retired from the apex bank’s.

The former CBN staff’s Lead Counsel, Ola Olanipekun (SAN), on Thursday, made the court documents available to select journalists in Jos, Plateau State.

Olanipekun stated that the sacked staff approached the court to enforce their right to fair hearing as workers who had been unjustly sacked by CBN.

According to Arise TV, the sacked staff’s lead counsel said, “the unlawful action of the apex bank has caused monumental damages to his clients running into hundreds of millions of Naira, adding that they are praying the court to ensure that the defendant pay all the claimants their monthly salaries, allowances and other emoluments/entitlements.”

Olanipekun added that “one of his clients who still have nine years of service left with the Bank would have earned, if his employment had not been unlawfully terminated, a sum of ₦1,621,455.70 monthly as evidenced by his salary payment, and such other monies in that regards as his current or subsequent promotion position/grades would be entitled.

“He is praying the an order of the court to ensure that the defendant shall pay forthwith all monthly salaries and allowances that the claimant would have earned in the course of his service/employment, being the sum of ₦178, 360,127.00 or such other sums in that regard, from the effective date of unlawful termination of his appointment up and until his due date of lawful retirement on 4th August, 2033.

“The counsel said that the claimant is also praying the court to ensure that the sum of N100,000,000 million is paid to him as General Damages against the defendant, for wrongful termination of his contract of employment.

“The sum of ₦30,000,000.00 as the cost of litigation/prosecuting the suit is also demanded from the defendant with 21 percent post-judgment interest, per annum, on all judgment sums awarded, from the date of judgment until the entire judgment sum is wholly defrayed/liquidated as well as further orders as the court may deem fit to make in the circumstances of the case.

Lady Destroy Her Husband’s  Passport After They Arrived At Lagos Airport

Drama unfolds in a trending video as a lady tears her husband’s international passport into pieces after they arrive at Lagos airport.

The couple had had a row over an undisclosed issue, and the wife who couldn’t contain her anger, made a scene at the airport.

In the video that is trending online, the woman who was carrying her baby tore her husband’s international passport to pieces and left it lying on the floor.

Her husband, who was pushing the baby trolley, stood silent, too stunned to speak.

Other travelers who witnessed the whole scene urged the man not to take the issue any further as they tried to placate him.

Reactions have trailed the video …

cathypearlz wrote: “I hope she is getting warmed up to go to court because right now she just committed a crime by destroying a government property. Your international passport may carry your names but it’s technically not yours. She should be ready for Federal Republic of Nigeria vs her and Nigeria Immigration Service vs her.

If your marriage isn’t working, please leave for your sanity rather than display unhealthy behaviour in front of the kids thereby causing them to be traumatised. And to the people asking the perplexed man not to talk because

“he is a man”, in a general context, I hope you know that this is what we do to men to the point where a lot of them are falling into depression. Allow people express themselves and stop shutting them up because of their genitals.”

BREAKING: Kaduna State Govt Ban On Unverified Protests

The Kaduna State Government would no longer tolerate any protest not cleared by security agencies.

This warning was issued by the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Samuel Aruwan who said such protests had the tendencies to be hijacked by criminals who loot and vandalize public and private property and unleash terror on innocent citizens.

He pointed to the protests of August 1st and 5th, 2024 in Kaduna and Zaria metropolitan cities as examples.

“The consequences of these plans, if allowed to flourish, are better imagined. The Kaduna State Government and security forces will not stand by and allow an anti-state agenda to run unchecked,” the statement read.

Nigeria Undercover Journalist Unveil Foreign NGO which Offered ₦800k Bribe To Smear Dangote Refinery

Nigerian investigative journalist, David Hundeyin, has accused an international Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), Dialogue Earth, of offering him an 800 thousand naira bribe to smear the world's largest single-train refinery, Dangote Refinery.

In a lengthy post on his X account on Saturday, August 10, 2024, Hundeyin detailed how the NGO reached out to him sometime last week with a brief that required him to write a negative review about the Dangote Refinery using climate change and environmental concerns as justifications.

According to the controversial roundsman, Dialogue Earth, formerly known as China Dialogue Trust, is based in London, United Kingdom and headed by an Oxford professor Sam Geall.

He alleged that several American intelligence fronts such as Ford Foundation and ClimateWorks - which is blacklisted in India for funding organisations working against India's national interest - are financiers of the NGO.

"Last week, I received an N800,000 offer from an international NGO called Dialogue Earth (formerly known as China Dialogue Trust) to write an article essentially saying that Dangote Refinery is terrible for the environment because something something "Environmental Concerns," something something "Climate Change," something something "Energy Transition Policy," something something "COP 28," he said.

Hundeyin exposes foreign NGO

Though he claimed he could suspect the intention of the NGO after the initial contact, the investigative journalist played along to obtain hard evidence.

"Succeeding Governments Fails To Built On The Foundation"- Obasanjo Explain Solution To Nigeria's Problems

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo says a proposed six-year single-term presidency isn't the silver bullet to the challenges bedevilling the country.

The elder statesman also warned that Nigeria won't move closer to achieving its dreams unless the leaders and citizens embrace a concept he described as “moral rearmament.”

He made this known when he received six members of the House of Representatives at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Abeokuta, on Friday, August 9, 2024.

Obasanjo noted that the West African giant was sitting on a keg of gunpowder which could blow up in everyone's face anytime if the leaders refused to take courageous and decisive steps to address the plethora of challenges.

The former President stated that the demands of the #EndBadGovernance protesters are very legitimate, saying the government should meet them and stop papering over the cracks.

The octogenarian said it would be wrong for those in government to continue to live an opulent lifestyle while telling the suffering masses to endure.

He expressed regret over the failure of successive governments to build on the foundation he laid for the country, noting that has caused significant setbacks for the nation.

“More than anything else, such as changing our system of government or moving to a single term of six or four years, we must change our ways of doing things in this country, we must decarbonise our brains, we must change our mentality and character.

“How I wish that the succeeding governments had built on the foundation we laid, even if not as fast as one would have wanted it. Sadly, the blocks we put there are even being removed.

“What I know about Nigeria is that, yes, if we get it right—the leadership, the team, because one tree does not make a forest—you need a good leader, but you also need a good team for a job well done.

“The point is that if we get this right, in about two and a half years, we shall get some of the challenges behind us, and in about 10 years, we would have a solid foundation, and in about 25 years, we would be there.

“But what we have always done is take one step forward, two steps aside, and four steps backward, which is why we are where we are in the country.

“For me, it is not so much about the system, but we may need to rethink the liberal democracy where we talk of loyal opposition. What we do in Africa is sit down and reach a consensus, and after we have done that, there is no opposition; everyone is on the same page, and we move together.

“The word for opposition in all African languages that I have looked into is ‘enemies.’ What do you do with loyal enemies? Nothing like that; once you take it, it belongs to you—the winners take all, and the opposition goes into the wilderness. That is what we do, but this is not good. We need everyone to join hands together and move society forward.

HealthInvestigation Shows That The Incidence Of Malaria Drop By 22% In 2021 by Roving1(op): 11:29am On Aug 10, 2024
Investigation Shows That The Incidence Of Malaria Drop by 22% In 2021

Mr Maduka linked the drop to the successful administration of seasonal malaria chemotherapy drugs on children between ages three and 59 months across the country.

Kogi Project Manager Malaria Consortium, Kenneth Maduka has said that malaria prevalence in the country decreased from 23 per cent in 2018 to 22 per cent in 2021.

Mr Maduka, made this known during the Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention briefing organised by the organisation in collaboration with Kogi Ministry of Health held in Lokoja.

He said that more than 28 million children were reached in Nigeria, representing 52 per cent of the global coverage of 54 million children in 2023

The project manager also said that malaria prevalence equally dropped by 16 per cent in Kogi and 27 per cent globally in 2023 compared with 2021 record.

“The drop is attributed to the successful administration Seasonal Malaria Chemotherapy (SMC) drugs on children between the ages of three and 59 months across the country and globe in 2023. In Kogi alone, 1.2 million children of ages three to 59 months were administered with more than 6.3 million medicines distributed under the Kogi SMC project in 2023.

SMC is a combination of two antimalarial drugs: Sulphadoxine Pyrimethamine and Amiodiaquine (SPAQ), given to eligible children of ages three to 59 months, only during raining season to prevent them from contracting malaria, ” he said.

He said that SMC project implementation began in Kogi in 2021 under the State Malaria Elimination Programme supported by Malaria Consortium, World Health Organisation and other partners.

“Our target for SMC implementation in 2024 in Kogi is 1, 184, 652, which we have already exceeded in June and July cycles. We intend to increase the figure during the August and September cycles of SMC implementation across the state,” Mr Maduja said.

He stressed that death from malaria occurred in 60 to 70 per cent of children of ages three to 59 months especially during raining season hence the focus on the age bracket.

The SMC state project manager commended the Kogi Government for fully supporting the programme which resulted in its success in the state.

Also speaking, Director, Health Educator Advocacy, Kogi SMEP, Orimodu Matthew, said the parley was to interact with the media to help increase awareness for advocacy and behavioural change towards SMC implementation in Kogi.

“We want the media to help promote the SMC campaign and activities, so that people can have behavioural change, correct wrong notion about malaria, and educate them to take the required free SMC drugs. Media should help to ensure patient engagement as well as encourage individuals to take active roles in their own healthcare programme,” Mr Matthew said.

'No Leadership Row Over Iwuanyanwu’s Near Future (Death)'- Ohanaeze Ndigbo Announced

Ogbonnia said, “There is no leadership row or tussle in Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide at present and there is not likely to be one in the near future.”

He further stated that the National Executive Committee (NEC) of Ohanaeze Ndigbo made up of professionals from all walks of life is currently in charge of the functions of the group.

According to Ogbonnia, the activities of the group are being carried out seamlessly by the appropriate structures under the administrative competence of the Secretary-General, Okey Emuchay.

He added, “Iwuanyanwu passed quietly on July 25 and it is very ill-advised and strange for an Igbo to begin to claim the position of the president general of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, even when the burial committee for Iwuanyanwu is yet to be constituted.

President Bola Tinubu has sympathised with Nigerians over the tragic loss of lives during the recent protests against bad governance in various states, including Borno, Jigawa, Kano, and Kaduna.

The president, in a televised broadcast to the nation on Sunday, acknowledged the legitimate aspirations of young Nigerians who have been peacefully protesting for a better future. However, he strongly condemned the violent turn the protests have taken, resulting in unnecessary bloodshed, destruction of public facilities, and looting of properties.

He said, “I am especially pained by the loss of lives in Borno, Jigawa, Kano, Kaduna and other states, the destruction of public facilities in some states, and the wanton looting of supermarkets and shops, contrary to the promise of protest organisers that the protest would be peaceful across the country. The destruction of properties sets us back as a nation, as scarce resources will be again used to restore them.

Despite President Bola Tinubu’s appeal for dialogue, youths have taken to the streets for the fourth consecutive day, pressing for improved economic conditions and good governance.

The #EndBadGovernance protest began on Thursday and is scheduled to last for ten days.

The protesters are calling for the restoration of petrol subsidy and measures to address food shortages, unemployment, and wasteful spending. They also demand a reduction in the President’s cabinet and cost of governance, as well as reforms of the electoral umpire INEC and anti-graft agency EFCC.
