‘Nigerians Vote For Thieves, Certificate Forgers’-Rotimi Amaechi Break Silent (VIDEO)

Former transport minister, Rotimi Amaechi, has accused Nigerians of voting for corrupt politicians especially thieves and certificate forgers.

Amaechi disclosed this while speaking at a recent event in Lagos.

The former minister noted that Nigerians know the politicians with history of corruption but choose to support them regardless of their crimes.

“What is new to say, Nigerians don’t react to anything. Has any politician told you he is not a thief? Which politician told you he went to university, which politician told you she served in NYSC, and which politician told you he has his certificate? Nigerians know and still vote for them.”

The minister had accused President Bola Tinubu’s adviser and former Nigeria Ports Authority boss, Hadiza Bala Usman, of telling unquantifiable lies against him in her book.

Justice Muhammad, who bowed out of the apex court bench on Friday after 47 years in active judicial service, made the allegation in a valedictory session organised in his honour.

He said that the judiciary, as presently structured, gave so much power to the CJN, who he said usually makes decisions without consulting other justices.

“As presently structured, the CJN is Chairman of the NJC, which oversees both the appointment and discipline of judges, he is equally Chair of the Federal Judicial Service Commission (FJSC), the National Judicial Institute (NJI), the Legal Practitioners Privileges Committee (LPPC) that appoints Senior Advocate of Nigeria.

“In my considered opinion, the oversight functions of these bodies should not rest on an individual alone. A person with absolute powers, it is said, corrupts easily and absolutely.”

Justice Muhammad also alleged that the refusal to fill the vacant slot of South-East on the apex court bench was deliberate, blaming it on “absolute powers vested in the office of the CJN.”

He said that with his retirement, the North Central zone, which he represented, would no longer have a Justice on the Supreme Court bench.

“My lord Hon. Justice Ejembi Eko JSC, who also represented the zone, retired on 23rd of May 2022. It has been a year and five months now. There has not been any replacement.

“With the passing of my lord, Hon. Justice Chima Centus Nweze, JSC on 29th July 2023, the South-East no longer has any presence at the Supreme Court. My lord, Hon. Justice Sylvester Nwali Ngwuta JSV died on 7th March 2021. There has not been any appointment in his stead for the South-East.

“As it stands, only four geo-political regions- the South-West, South-South, North-West and North-East are represented in the Supreme Court.

“While the South-South and North-East have two serving justices, the North-West and South-West are fully represented with three each.

JUST IN: Two People Died As Enugu Traders Protest After Gov. Mbah Reportedly Locked Their Shops For Not Obeying sit-at-home Order(VIDEO)

Bonaventure Nwodo, a Dubai returnee, was among the three people who were reportedly k#lled in a protest following the sealing of their shops in Ogbete Main Market, Enugu State, by Governor Peter Mbah over noncompliance with his ban on sit-at-home.

It was gathered that several others were also inj¥red during the protest that occurred on Wednesday, July 26.

According to reports, the protest turned vi%lent after security operatives allegedly opened fir£, k#lling at least three persons and inj¥ring others.

However, the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Enugu State Command, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, in a statement said the protest turned vi%lent after it was hij@cked.

“Normalcy has been restored at Ogbete Market Enugu and its surroundings, following the report of protest by some traders over the sealing of their shops by the State Government and their attempt to force others, whose shops were not sealed, to close theirs and the entire market closed.

The initially peaceful protest was hij@cked and made to become vi%lent.

Traders in the market and citizens alike have been pleaded with to remain law-abiding, peaceful and cooperative, while using approved channels to express their grievances,” he said.

Nigerien soldiers claimed to have removed President Mohamed Bazoum from office following the politician’s detention by members of the presidential guard at his official residence since Wednesday morning.

The soldiers announced the coup in televised broadcast in the early hours of Thursday.

In the broadcast, Ten senior officers, led by Colonel Major Amadou Abdramane, said: “We, the defence and security forces … have decided to put an end to the regime you are familiar with.”

They alleged that the deteriorating security situation and poor social and economic administration were the reasons they had taken over.

“This follows the continuous deterioration of the security situation, the bad social and economic management. We reaffirm our support to all commitments undertaken by Niger.”

JUST IN: Gang Member Murdered, Beheaded By Cultists Inside Market In Anambra (Photo)

Traders inside Eke Awka market in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State were shocked on Wednesday morning as a cultist was beheaded by suspected members of a rival cult group in the market area.

It was gathered that the incident happened in the morning as the traders were about to open their shops for the day’s business.

The Daily Post reported that the slain man, identified as Igwe Omeli was a notorious cultist, who was always used by the leadership of the market to collect tolls.

While narrating the incident, an eyewitness reportedly said that the victim was hacked down in the market around 7am.

“He sighted members of the rival cult and made efforts to escape and also alert his gang members, but he was not lucky.

“His head was cut off, including his manhood, and his assailants took them away, leaving the trunk lying inside a line in the market,” the eyewitness explained.

The spokesperson for Anambra State Police Command, DSP Ikenga Tochukwu, confirmed the incident, saying that operatives of the command have been dispatched to the scene.

It was reported that the incident threw the traders into fear as they hurriedly shut down their shops, for fear of reprisal by the rival group.

A businesswoman, identified as Ajoke Aleshinloye, 31, has been accused of br¥talizing her 10-year-old daughter, Rodiat, over food in Lagos Island.

According to a source who spoke with rovingupdates, “This happened in Tokunboh street in Lagos Island on Saturday, July 22.

The girl was in her father’s custody after her mother abandoned her when she was just six months old. However, three years ago, the mother reappeared and dr@gged her father to human rights where she gained custody of the child.

For the past three years that the child has been with her mother, Ajoke, she has been subjected to physical and m£ntal ab¥se. This woman b£ats this child at any slight provocation.

Sources privy to the ongoing constitution of President Bola Tinubu‘s cabinet have revealed that some bigwig politicians lobbying for ministerial appointments should be prepared for some shocks when the list is eventually released.

According to them, most politicians who are under investigation and are close to the president will be shocked to be excluded from the ministerial list.

One of the sources told The Punch that two governors facing corruption allegations would be shocked.

The source said despite their perceived contribution to the electoral victory of the President, they would be surprised.

“Just wait. Some will be shocked, others will want to constitute themselves into opposition because neither them nor their nominees will be on the list,” the source added.

Rovingposts understands that the President might rely on security reports on individuals whose names were already sent to security agencies for screening before submitting the ministerial list to the Senate before Thursday, July 27.

It was gathered that the President had forwarded the names of some individuals to security agencies for clearance; however, top sources said their consent might not indicate that they would make the list when the nominees are eventually presented to the Senate for screening.

The non-submission of the ministerial nominees might delay the long recess scheduled for lawmakers in the Red Chamber.

Another source told The Punch that “While the President is keeping his cards to his chest, there are former governors, especially those that finished their tenure on May 29, who are showing interest in becoming ministers.

“Also, as expected, there are political bigwigs, traditional rulers, captains of industries, and those in the Diaspora.

But instead of waiting to compile the list, the President was sending them to the security agencies piecemeal for clearance.

“That was why the Presidency was correct when it said there was no ministerial list anywhere.”

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has urged the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas to drop the alleged plan to spend N40bn on 465 exotic and bulletproof cars for members and principal officials, and N70bn as ‘palliatives’ for new members.

SERAP urged Akpabio and Abbas repeal the 2022 Supplementary Appropriation Act to reduce the budget for the National Assembly by N110bn to reflect the current economic realities in the country and address the impact of the removal of fuel subsidy on the over 137 million poor Nigerians.

It also urged them to request President Bola Tinubu to present a fresh supplementary appropriation bill, to redirect the N110 billion to address the situation of the over 20 million out-of-school children in Nigeria, for the approval of the National Assembly.

In a letter dated 15 July 2023 and signed by its Deputy Director, Kolawole Oluwadare, the organisation slammed the national assembly leadership for allegedly planning to spend N40bn on 465 exotic and bulletproof cars for members and principal officials, and N70bn as ‘palliatives’ for new members.

SERAP said the proposed plan by national assembly leadership is a fundamental breach of the duties for lawmakers to arbitrarily increase their own budget and to use the budget as a tool to satisfy their lifestyle.

The letter read in part: “It is a grave violation of the public trust and constitutional oath of office for members of the National Assembly to unjustifiably increase their own budget at a time when over 137 million poor Nigerians are living in extreme poverty exacerbated by the removal of fuel subsidy.

“We would be grateful if the recommended measures are taken within seven days of the receipt and/or publication of this letter.

"If we have not heard from you by then, SERAP shall take all appropriate legal actions to compel you and the National Assembly to comply with our request in the public interest.

“Rather than exercising their constitutional and oversight functions to pursue the public interest by considering bills to improve the conditions of the over 137 million poor Nigerians who are facing the impact of the removal of fuel subsidy, the lawmakers seem to be looking after themselves.”

“According to reports, no fewer than 107 units of the 2023 model of the Toyota Landcruiser and 358 units of the 2023 model of Toyota Prado would be bought for the use of members of the Senate and the House of Representatives respectively.

“The planned purchase is different from the official bulletproof vehicles expected to be purchased for the four presiding officers of the National Assembly.

A Federal High Court in Abuja has directed security agencies to provide maximum protection for the governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the November polls in Kogi State, Murtala Ajaka.

Rovingposts learned that the presiding judge, Justice Inyang Edem Ekwo ordered the Department of State Service(DSS), army, police, and navy to secure and guarantee the safety of Ajaka and his supporters in the state.

The court issued the order in a ruling in an ex-parte application made before it by the SDP governorship flag bearer

Ajaka, as gathered by this platform, had, through his lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), petitioned the inspector-general of police (IGP), seeking an investigation into an alleged plot against him and his supporters.

The security guarantee, according to the order, is to ensure Ajaka’s safety, pending the hearing of a suit filed before the court.

The court’s order followed the ex-parte application dated and filed on July 11, which sought a restraining order against the security agencies from arresting, inviting, detaining, or threatening the applicant’s life and property pending the hearing and determination of the substantive suit.

Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has reacted to the decision of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to offer board slots to state governors, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors.

Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum and Kwara state governor, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, in a communiqué issued at the end of the NGF meeting on Wednesday, July 12 disclosed that President Tinubu asked the governors to nominate competent persons into the dissolved boards and parastatals of Federal Government agencies, The Punch reported.

President Tinubu had on Monday, June 19, dissolved 156 boards and parastatals of Federal Government agencies.

Kwara State Governor, Abdulrazaq said the members of the forum commended President Tinubu for extending an opportunity to the governors to nominate board members across party lines.

“APC is doing everything in their crooked book to ensure they legitimize this government, which we have resisted vehemently. We will only do what is rightfully ours when the court makes its decision and pronouncement.

‘’But as far as we are concerned, every attempt we see them do is a means to cajole people to believe and legitimize their government. That is the truth about it.’’
He added

‘’Sending letters to state governors is part of the process of legitimizing their governance, which we are resisting. At the moment, LP has only one governor.

The belief is that the governor may likely dance to their tune.
‘’But the truth about it is that will the APC tell you they don’t have party people in Abia State that they can nominate? Why must they go through the governor to do so? What they are aiming to do is to indirectly co-opt him into their party.

That’s the truth.”
Obi’s media aide, Tai Obasi, also said the subtle move by President Tinubu is not enough to legitimise his government.

He said:

“It is obviously a gimmick. Of course, you know the man (Tinubu) and the problem he is facing in court. It is easy for one to see what he is trying to do even though it looks positive though.

“But again, the oppositions are not fools. As we are concerned, we still see his government as an interim one.”

BREAKING: Finally Nigerian Army Declares War Against Terrorist, Dismisses Amnesty For Bandits

The Chief of Army Staff, Maj. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, has dismissed the idea of amnesty for terrorist saying that the programme instituted in most states failed to achieve its purpose.

Politics Nigeria earlier reported that there has been call from different quarters for the federal government to negotiate and grant amnesty to terrorists just like the Niger-Delta militants.

BREAKING: Witness Affirms At Court As PDP Difficulties Sanwo-Olu's Re-Appointment

The Lagos State Election Petition Tribunal on Tuesday heard the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its governorship candidate’s case challenging the reelection of Babajide Sanwo-Olu as Governor of Lagos Stae in the March 18 governorship poll.

Yesterday, a former Deputy Governor in Borno State, Adamu Shettima Yuguda Dibal, who chaired the last governorship primary election of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State, testified for Sanwo-Olu at the tribunal sitting.

Naija News understands that Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Bode Olanipekun, a counsel to Sanwo-Olu and his Deputy, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, led Dibal in evidence at the court session yesterday.

In his defence, Dibal told the tribunal headed by Justice Arum Ashom that the Lagos State Chairman of the APC, Mr Cornelius Ojelabi, did not flout any electoral regulation when he notified the Lagos State Office of INEC in writing about the party’s primary election in Lagos State.

During cross-examination, Clement Onwuenwunor (SAN), counsel to the PDP Governorship Candidate, Mr Abdulazeez Adediran (a.k.a. Jandor), asked the witness whether Ojelabi was the national chairman of the APC as at May 24, 2022, when he wrote the letter.

The witness replied in the negative. He explained to the tribunal that it was APC’s National Working Committee (NWC) that set up state committees that conducted the primary election in all 36 states.

While being cross-examined by APC counsel, Mr Babatunde Ogala (SAN), the chieftain, after being shown the said letter, which had become an exhibit before the tribunal, said that Ojelabi was only informing the INEC office that the NWC had constituted a five-member committee to conduct the primary election in Lagos State and he was the Chairman.

The witness also said he produced a report on the primary election to the national secretariat of the APC after the exercise.

The witness, while replying to INEC’s counsel, Mr Adetunji Oyeyipo (SAN), said that representatives from INEC’s headquarters and its Lagos Office were present during the primary election and signed a report on its conduct.

There was no cross-examination by counsel of the Labour Party and its Candidate, Mr Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour.

The tribunal headed by Justice Arum Ashom thereafter discharged the witness and directed the APC to open its defence on July 12.

BREAKING: Ex Nigeria President Buhari Commissions Six New Projects In A Single Day (See List)

A prominent figure in the All Progressive Congress (APC) and former commissioner for information, culture, and tourism in Niger State, Jonathan Vatsa has accused former President, Muhammadu Buhari of intentionally ignoring Niger State.

He alleges that Buhari held a grudge against the state due to General Ibrahim Babangida, who ousted Buhari from his military leadership in 1985.

During a press meeting in Minna, Vatsa claimed that despite Buhari receiving extensive support from the state in the 2015 and 2019 elections, the former president turned his back on Niger State.

He stated, “his government shut its door against the state simply because of his unforgiving spirit against Babangida over the 1985 coup against him.”

Vatsa expressed regret that Niger State, which significantly supported APC in the past elections, experienced “total neglect” under Buhari’s administration.

The state suffered from “failed promises and abandoned federal projects,” he said, including projects started under Buhari’s leadership and those inherited from previous administrations.

Vatsa also criticized Buhari for allegedly holding a personal grudge against Babangida, leading to the neglect of the people of Niger State.

He said it was unfair of Buhari to disregard the state that always supported him in previous elections.

He highlighted numerous abandoned federal projects in the state, including roads, the Baro port project, and the Bida Basin oil exploration project.

“None of these projects saw the light of the day, all because of his hatred for one individual,” Vatsa stated.

BREAKING: Bola Tinubu Govt Denies Intend To Union FIRS, NNPCL, Customs, Others

The federal government says contrary to some reports in the media, it has no plan to merge or collapse revenue-generating agencies.

The special adviser to President Bola Tinubu on revenue, Zacchaeus Adedeji made this known, stating that what the government plans to do is a harmonization or integration.

He however clarified that the harmonization or integration process does not mean the agencies would be merged, but rather, on a single platform, the government can monitor what is happening in all the revenue-collecting agencies while they remain individually unique entities.

Mr. Adedeji made the clarification during an interview on Channels TV.

“We are not collapsing. The Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Limited will be NNPC because it is limited. FIRS will be (on its own) but the collection of all revenues will be technologically driven by data,” he said.

Adedeji added that with the steps set to be taken by the government, Nigeria’s total annual revenue which is currently below N15 trillion will be increased without imposing extra taxes on citizens of the country.

BREAKING: NSA Set To Declare National Emergency In Plateau

Following the rising insecurity in Plateau State, the House of Representatives has asked the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, to declare a national emergency on killings in the North West state.

The Green Chamber passed the resolution during the plenary session on Tuesday following the killing of nine people and the destruction of houses and properties during an invasion of a community in Mangu Local Government Area on Saturday.

Adopting a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by the lawmaker who represents Jos South/North Federal Constituency, Dachung Bagos, the lower chamber said the NSA must find the perpetrators behind the killings in the state.

Earlier, while moving the motion, Bagos said there has been “an increase in the rate of insecurity and killing of innocent souls”, including some communities within his constituency.

He said: “The attacks have been occurring in some parts of Plateau state for some months now with crops in farmlands completely destroyed.

NYSC DG Give Immediate Order To Relocates Orientation Camp in Plateau State Over Spate of Killings

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has directed prospective corps members to avoid the Orientation Camp in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State.

Rovingposts reports that this decision comes in response to the ongoing crisis and alarming rate of killings that have plagued the area.

In an official statement released by the NYSC, the new location for the orientation camp has been shifted to Waye Foundation by Buken Academy, situated in Doi-Du within the Jos South Local Government Area.

Eddy Megwa, the Director of Press and Public Relations for NYSC, emphasised the need for prospective corps members to heed the new directive.

Megwa stated, “This is to inform members of the public, especially our esteemed Prospective Corps Members that the venue of the 2023 Batch ‘B’ Stream One Orientation Camp for Plateau State has been changed from the Permanent Orientation Camp in Mangu to Waye Foundation, by Buken Academy Doi-Du (Temporary NYSC Orientation Camp) in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State.

“All prospective Corps Members are by this information expected to report at the new Orientation Camp (Waye Foundation by Buken Academy) on the dates specified in their call-up letters.”

The decision to relocate the camp was made in light of the escalating violence between locals and armed militias, with little intervention from security agencies.

NASS Boards: Akpabio, Abbas Enduring an onslaught For Surrendering half Seats To Resistance

In desperate move to ensure stability in the 10th Assembly, the leadership of the Senate and House of Representatives have conceded 50 per cent of the chairmanship slots of various committees in the two chambers to lawmakers elected on the opposition platforms.

Consequently, major opposition platforms, especially Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP), New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) and Young Peoples Party (YPP) are to pick 50 per cent of the chairmanship positions of the various committees, leaving the governing All Progressives Congress (APC) with the remaining 50 per cent.

LEADERSHIP gathered that Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, had allegedly sealed a deal with the opposition lawmakers on getting half of the committee chairmanship slots ahead of their elections on June 13.

Findings further revealed that the deal had been reaffirmed at subsequent meetings between the leadership of the two chambers and the leadership of the minority caucus after the June 13 inauguration of Akpabio and Abbas.

It was gathered that the sharing formula would touch on the various categories of committees, designated as Grades A, B and C.

Last Wednesday, minority leader of the House of Representatives, Hon Kingsley Chinda, told members of the minority caucus at a meeting within the National Assembly Complex that Abbas renewed his commitment to honour the deal.

He said the Speaker conceded to the agreement in his recent meeting with the helmsman of the House.

LEADERSHIP gathered that the move was meant to serve as a measure of reward for the support from the opposition lawmakers and also to provide stability valves for the new leadership.

It was learnt that the 50-50 arrangement was also meant to douse palpable tension in the National Assembly, especially in the Senate where Akpabio battled strong and fierce opposition to emerge.

But despite the lofty goals projected by the promoters of the idea, LEADERSHIP learnt that it is creating discomfort and disquiet in the APC, especially in the majority caucus of the Senate and House of Representatives.

Findings by this paper revealed that Senators and members of the House elected on the platform of the APC were not comfortable with the sharing formulae which placed their fate at par with their counterparts elected on opposition platforms.

Protesting the development in a chat with our correspondent at the weekend, an APC Senator who did not want his name in print fumed: “The leadership of the Senate and House of Representatives have conceded 50 per cent of the chairmanship seats in both chambers to our colleagues elected on the platforms of the various opposition platforms.

“The leaders of both chambers, Senator Godswill Akpabio and Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, had this arrangement with the opposition lawmakers before their elections.

“We thought it was just a gimmick to lure the opposition lawmakers to vote for them before the election but surprisingly Senator Akpabio and Rt. Hon. Abbas has at different meetings with the opposition caucus after their elections, renewed their commitment to honour the agreement.”

The implication, according to the aggrieved lawmaker, is that opposition lawmakers will have 50 per cent of the chairmanship slots allocated to them, while those of the governing party will have the remaining 50 per cent to jostle for.

He continued: “This arrangement cuts across all categories of committees. It means APC will share grades A, B and C committees with them at equal proportion. It is an unfair arrangement to those of us from the ruling party.

“How can APC lawmakers share these slots at par with their colleagues in the opposition parties? It’s never done and this is unprocedural. They are not even reserving a substantial number of the grade A (juicy committees) committee for those of us from in the ruling party.

“Even if we agree with them that such moves can help to ensure peace and stability in the Senate and House, the sharing shouldn’t have been at equal proportions. What do we enjoy as a ruling party? If the reverse was the case and the APC lost in the February 25 presidential election, are they saying either PDP or LP, which are strong contenders in the race, would have shared the chairmanship slots in the National Assembly with the elected APC members equally?

JAMB RESULTS MANIPULATION: "My Dear Daughter Has Realized Her Mistakes, I Therefore Beg Nigerian To Pardon Her"–Mmesoma’s Father Issues Apology to JAMB, Public for Daughter’s UTME Result Forgery (VIDEO)

Mr. Romanus Ejikeme, the father of Mmesoma, has issued an unreserved apology to the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and the Nigerian public.

POLITICS NIGERIA reports that the video footage by NTA showcased Romanus revealing that his daughter initially deceived him regarding her actions.

Recall that Innoson Vehicles, the company which offered a N3 million scholarship to Mmesoma Ejikeme, has revoked the scholarship. Cornel Osigwe, the Head of Corporate Communications & Affairs of Innoson Group, made the announcement in a statement.

Earlier in the day, it was unveiled in a report by an inquiry panel commissioned by the Anambra State Government that Mmesoma confessed to forging her Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) result.

The panel’s findings exposed Mmesoma, a student at Anglican Girls Secondary School, Nnewi, for claiming to have achieved a record-breaking score of 362, a number later revealed by JAMB to be falsified.

According to the panel, Mmesoma had submitted a request to JAMB using an alternate registration number, falsely inflating her aggregate score to 362. However, JAMB’s official records confirmed her actual score as 249. Mmesoma confessed to manipulating the results herself using her mobile phone.

The panel’s investigation, which included interviews with Mmesoma, JAMB officials, and the principal of Anglican Girls Secondary School, provided evidence that supported their conclusions.

President Bola Tinubu Elect New Committee, Appoints Taiwo Oyedele As The Chairman

The committee will be chaired by Fiscal Policy Partner and Africa Tax Leader at PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PwC), Taiwo Oyedele.

It will comprise experts from both the private and public sectors and have responsibility for the various aspects of tax law reform, fiscal policy design and coordination, harmonization of taxes, and revenue administration.

Special Adviser to the President on Revenue, Adelabu Zacch Adedeji, explained that President Tinubu recognizes the importance of a sound fiscal policy environment and an effective taxation system for the functioning of the government and the economy.

”Nigeria ranks very low on the global ease of paying taxes while the country’s Tax to GDP ratio is one of the lowest in the world and well below the African average.

”This has led to an overreliance on borrowing to finance public spending which in turn limits the fiscal space as debt service costs consume a greater portion of government revenue, annually resulting in a vicious cycle of inadequate funding for socio-economic development.

”While some incremental progress has been recorded over the years, the outcomes have not been transformative enough to change the narrative,” he said.

Mr Adedeji outlined the key challenges in Nigeria’s tax system to include multiple taxes and revenue collection agencies, fragmented and complex tax system, low tax morale, high prevalence of tax evasion, high cost of revenue administration, lack of coordination between fiscal and economic policies, and poor accountability in the utilization of tax revenue.

The establishment of this committee reflects President Tinubu’s commitment to addressing these challenges and bringing about transformative reforms in fiscal policy and taxation.

The committee’s primary objective is to enhance revenue collection efficiency, ensure transparent reporting, and promote the effective utilization of tax and other revenues to boost citizens’ tax morale, foster a healthy tax culture, and drive voluntary compliance.

These efforts will not only improve Nigeria’s revenue profile but also create a more conducive and internationally-competitive business environment.

”Our aim is to transform the tax system to support sustainable development and achieve a minimum of 18% Tax to GDP ratio within the next 3 years without stifling investment or economic growth.

”It should be noted that this committee will not only advise the government on necessary reforms, but will also drive the implementation of such recommendations in support of the comprehensive fiscal policy and tax reform agenda of the current administration,” the SA on Revenue added.

JUST IN: High Court Upsets Representative Nwaoboshi's Conviction, Orders Immediate Release

The Supreme Court has overturned the conviction of Peter Nwaoboshi, the senator who represents Delta North, for charges of fraud and money laundering.

POLITICS NIGERIA reports that the apex court has also issued an order for his immediate release from the Ikoyi prisons in Lagos, where he has been held.

The Supreme Court ruling, delivered on Friday, also freed the two companies involved in the case, Golden Touch Construction Project Ltd and Suiming Electrical Ltd. These entities were jointly tried with Senator Nwaoboshi on a two-count charge brought against them by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

In a divided judgment, with a four-to-one decision, the Supreme Court set aside the earlier ruling by the Court of Appeal in Lagos on July 1, 2022, which had overturned the discharge and acquittal of the defendants by the Federal High Court in Lagos.

Justice Emmanuel Agim delivered the lead judgment on behalf of the Supreme Court, highlighting that Senator Nwaoboshi and the two companies had been unjustly and maliciously prosecuted by the EFCC for actions that did not constitute any offenses recognized by the law.

The court emphasised that they were subjected to an unnecessary criminal trial in relation to a civil transaction.

He made the call on Wednesday while reacting to the unrest in the South-East occasioned by the enforcement of a one week sit-at-home by the secessionist group.

Hassan, who spoke during an interview with Arise Television, opined that the best way to tackle the menace arising from the activities of the secessionist group is to release Kanu.

He said, “One major deal in the Southeast which I think will cool off a great deal of nerves is to bring out Nnamdi Kanu.

“Pull that gentleman out, stop this incarceration. I know some of his pronouncements are offensive, and there was a need to take certain actions. But Nigeria itself is a family.

“When part of the family feels offended, as a parent, you sit the gentleman down and try to find out what are the problems? How do I help you?

“Can we start talking with Kanu? Can we start talking with IPOB? Can we start talking with other groups? I think conversation with some of these teams will go a long way in addressing the problems.
