KEDCO Disconnected Kaduna Gov’t House Light Over N2.9 Billion Debt

The Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) has disconnected the Kaduna Government House from the power grid due to an outstanding debt of N2.9 billion.

The company’s Head of Corporate Communication, Abdulazeez Abdullahi, on Friday revealed that the government house had failed to pay for electricity consumed over seven months.

The disconnection comes after extensive efforts to resolve the issue through consultations and reconciliations. According to Abdullahi, the outstanding balance for electricity consumed from January 2024 to July 2024 alone amounts to N1.166 billion, bringing the total debt to N2.943 billion.

Despite a recent payment of N256 million made on May 9, 2024, for electricity consumed between September 2023 and December 2023, the Kaduna State Government’s debt remains significantly high, the statement said.

Abdullahi added that the disconnection was a last resort after all other avenues for resolving the payment issue had been exhausted.

“Kaduna Electric’s decision to disconnect power came after repeated attempts to address the payment issues, including several consultations with state officials. In contrast, other states under the Kaduna Electric franchise, namely Sokoto, Kebbi, and Zamfara, have maintained their accounts in good standing, regularly meeting their electricity payment obligations and other repayment obligations with Kaduna Electric.

Wike Disclose Suspected Senator Sponsoring Hunger Protests

Nyesom Wike, the Minister in charge of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has claimed that security agencies have identified a senator who is allegedly sponsoring protests in the nation's capital.

The former Rivers State Governor disclosed this shortly after an emergency security council meeting in the FCT on Thursday, August 1, 2024.

Wike said it has been discovered that the unnamed lawmaker called some security operatives to accompany a truckload of food which were given to the protesters.

The minister stated that in due time, security agencies would invite the senator for questioning.

While admitting that protests are allowed in a democracy, Wike noted that the protesters also owe it a duty to democracy to respect court orders restricting their activities to the MKO Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.

“That is sponsorship. A senator providing food for protesters. At the appropriate time, security agencies will invite the senator and find out how you will be sponsoring this kind of thing against the government of the day,” he said.

Katsina State Police Arrest 50 Suspected Miscreants During #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria Protests

The Police Command in Katsina State has detained 50 suspected miscreants during the nationwide protests over the economic hardship in the state.

The command’s Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Abubakar Aliyu, disclosed this to newsmen on Thursday in Katsina.

He, however, said that no loss of life was recorded during the protests in the state.

He said, “The state is now relatively calm as the protests have been contained.”

Aliyu added that the security arrangements have been reinforced in the state.

State Of Unrest As Deputy Speaker, Thomas Tayebwa Ask Minister of Foreign Affairs to Respond To The Allegations Of Uganda Over Use Of Embassy In Dubai

The Deputy Speaker, Thomas Tayebwa, has asked the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jeje Odongo, to respond to allegations of the use of Uganda’s consulate in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE) as a casino.

This follows media reports indicating that Uganda’s consulate building in Dubai is being used as a covert casino, an issue picked up and raised as a matter of national importance by the Shadow Foreign Affairs Minister, Hon. Muwada Nkunyingi (NUP, Kyadondo County East) during the sitting of Parliament on Thursday 1 August 2024.

Nkunyingi called for an investigation into the allegations, saying that the matter, if left unchecked, has international ramifications.

“Parliament pushed for this consulate to extend support and services to Ugandans who are thousands living in Dubai. Surprisingly turning the consulate into a casino and a gambling house contravenes the laws of UAE, our laws and international laws governing diplomatic premises,” Nkunyingi said.

Nkunyingi justified that the consulate was established and therefore expected to be managed in accordance with the law.

“As well we want to know what disciplinary, diplomatic and administrative steps that have been undertaken to address this development,” he said.

The Federal Government has warned that it may be forced to restrict British Airways from operating at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos if the UK fails to address the slot issue affecting Nigerian airlines.

Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, disclosed that the ministry has written to the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to allow Air Peace to fly to Heathrow Airport in London, as stipulated in the Bilateral Air Service Agreement (BASA).

Keyamo expressed frustration that British Airways enjoys unfettered access to MMIA, while Nigerian airlines are denied similar privileges in the UK. According to him, countries must abide by BASA arrangements, warning that failure to do so may lead to reactive action from the Nigerian government.

He said, “We have already written to the United Kingdom to give Nigerian carriers, especially Air Peace Heathrow Airport, which is a tier one airport, just as we have British Airways, using our Lagos airport. We may as well give BA Ilorin to operate to. When we asked for Heathrow Airport, you’re telling us to go to a slot committee. Who does that? Air Peace I can tell you is on its way to Heathrow away from Gatwick.

Motorist Stranded As Oil Marketers Shut Down Stations, Following The Nationwide Planned Protest

Oil marketers in Abuja and neighbouring states of Niger, Nasarawa, and Kogi states have shut down their filling stations leading to fuel queues amidst growing concerns over a planned nationwide protest.

LEADNAIJA reports that the planned protest over hardship is scheduled for August 1st.

In Abuja, retail outlets, including those operated by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), stopped dispensing fuel as of Friday.

Similar scenes were witnessed in parts of Niger and Nasarawa states, with fuel queues reappearing at outlets like AYM Shafa in Dei-Dei and NNPC in Zuba, Niger State.

In Lagos, several filling stations were shut down, creating fears of an impending fuel scarcity. Most stations were not dispensing fuel, while the few operational ones sold at N800 per litre. See more photos here

Rivers State: In Defiance Of Court Order, PDP Proceeded With The Ward Congress

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has gone ahead with its ward congresses in Rivers State, despite two court orders prohibiting the exercise.

FG Cannot Use All Its Resources To Pay Workers- Presidency Says, Insists on ₦62,000 Minimum Wage

The Presidency has said that the N250,000 minimum wage demanded by Organised Labour is unsustainable, cautioning that the Federal Government cannot allocate all its resources to meet such a demand.


The Federal Government and Organised Labour had previously failed to reach an agreement on the minimum wage, with the government and Organised Private Sector offering N62,000, which Labour deemed an insult.

Giving fresh insight on the issue, the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said the government cannot channel all its resources to pay workers, as it has other responsibilities to attend to.

Onanuga urged Labour to be realistic, considering that workers are only about 10% of the population, and many others are self-employed or engaged in the private sector.

He said, “That is why we keep telling labour to be realistic because the government cannot use all its resources to pay workers. They have other things to do. The workers we are even talking about are not up to 10 per cent of the population. Many people are self-employed or engaged in the private sector, who are not members of Labour, and are not affected by this demand.

“This is even more reason why labour has to reconsider their decision critically instead of always striving to shut down the system. What the FG did was in consultation with the private sector and others. Only Labour, which appears to be in the minority, kept saying they won’t accept N62,000. They are not even employers but employees.

“Let us wait and hear what they are going to say after their return from the ILO conference. But they have to be realistic.”

He noted that the Federal Government’s decision was made in consultation with the private sector and other stakeholders.

“I am not certain when he plans to do it (Bill). May be after Sallah. But I am not sure whether the FG is meeting with them or whether its position on the minimum wage has changed. Don’t forget the current amount on the table was arrived at by the committee that also has the private sector where the NECA and NACIMMA were also represented.

Organised labour Gives Fresh Update on Minimum Wage, Lists Benefits Workers Will Enjoy

The Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage has appealed to organised labour to reconsider its demand for a minimum wage of N250,000 per month.

Committee Chairman, Alhaji Goni Aji, made the appeal on Sunday in Abuja, citing economic considerations and non-monetary incentives provided by the Federal Government.

According to Aji, the Federal Government has offered various incentives, including a N35,000 wage award for federal workers, N100 billion for gas-powered buses, and N125 billion conditional grant.

Others include financial inclusion for small and medium scale enterprises, N25,000 shared among 15 million households, and N185 billion palliatives loans to states.

Additionally, he said the Federal Government has released 42,000 metric tonnes of grains from strategic reserves and distributed 60,000 metric tonnes of rice to millers. Aji also cited a recent 25% and 35% salary increase for federal workers, 90% subsidy on health costs, and the commissioning of a light rail to relieve transportation costs.

The committee chairman urged labour unions to consider these incentives and accept the N62,000 offered by the Federal Government.

He also noted that the outcome of a new minimum wage should not trigger further massive job losses, as many businesses are already closing down.

On June 3, organized labour embarked on an indefinite strike, crippling businesses and essential services nationwide. The labour unions are seeking a minimum wage increase, arguing that the current N30,000 is inadequate due to the effects of petrol subsidy removal and forex unification.

Nigerians Reacts Over Proposed Six-Year Single Term for President, Governors

A recent proposal by federal lawmakers to amend the 1999 Constitution and introduce a single six-year term for the president and governors has sparked a heated debate among Nigerians.


The proposal, which is yet to be discussed in the plenary session of the two chambers, has attracted both support and criticism from various quarters.

While some Nigerians believe the single-term proposal will check the desperation associated with a second term and enable incumbents to focus on their jobs, others think it is not a pressing need and may distract from more important issues.

Ladipo Johnson, publicity secretary of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), supports the proposal but warns it must not be used to extend the tenure of the current administration.

Johnson said: “The proposal makes sense; some countries are doing it. But it must not be to elongate the tenure of this government?”

Meanwhile, Udo Uduak, a lawyer, believes the current system is not working and needs a change.

“Is it not obvious that the current system is not working? We need a new constitution, or a comprehensive amendment should be made and part of it should be for single tenure for president and governors to save us from this logjam and trouble we often see because someone wants re-election. They can now face governance, knowing you have only one term,” he said.

Olisa Agbakoba, former president of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), supports a single term of four years, citing Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s achievements in just 100 days.

He said, “Why do I need two terms of 8 years to do whatever I want to do as President. Anybody who is serious about governance can make the mark in two years. How long did it take Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR) to turn things around in America in the 30s which could be termed one of the worst periods in America? Don’t forget that it was from him we now have 100 days in office that politicians celebrate. Within 100 days FDR had made his marks. But we don’t see such hunger to do the right thing here. We wait for second term.

“It is this illusion that ‘O, I have more four years’ that elected office holders waste their time and the time of everybody. If I had four years as a president, within two years, I would have done the major work I need to do. I don’t need eight years. It is a waste of time.”

Andrew Okon, a public affairs commentator, argues that the desperation for second term is driven by greed for power, not patriotism or passion for service.

President Bola Tinubu has again acknowledged Nigeria’s economic challenges, assuring citizens that his administration is “retooling” the financial system to ease their economic difficulties.

Tinubu, former Lagos governor, sworn in as Nigeria’s President on May 29, 2023, said it has been “a very challenging time for us in the country”.

“Up till now, we are still retooling and rejigging our financial system to bring prosperity and relief to the people of this country,” the President said when he commissioned the Guzape Lot II Infrastructure Project in Abuja on Saturday.

He said the completion of the project was testament to what could be achieved through “diligent planning, collaboration and shared commitment to excellence”.

Aba Soldier Massacre: Troop Invade IPOB Camp, Kill Six Suspect, Recovered Various Weapons

Troops of operation UDO KA have conducted a successful raid on a camp of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) located in Igboro Forest in Abia State on Saturday, June 8.

This was revealed in a statement shared on X by the Nigerian Army on Sunday, June 9.

The the raid was reportedly conducted in order to arrest the killers of five soldiers at Obikabia junction in Aba last week.

The statement reads: “In order to apprehend the perpetrators of the attack on own troops (three out of those killed are from the SE) at Aba last week as well as to recover arms and ammunition from the Indigeneous People of Biafra and its affiliate Eastern Security Network terrorist group, troops of Operation UDO KA conducted another successful clearance/raid operations to the IPOB/ESN Camp in Igboro Forest in Arochukwu LGA of Abia State yesterday.

“During the intelligence-led operation, troops encountered Improvised Explosive Devices along the axis of advance, and one soldier sustained a minor injury from the fragment.

35-year-old Mother Arraigned In Court For Allegedly Assaulting Vice Principal

The police, on Friday, arraigned a 35-year-old woman, Chinanso Chinyere, in an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly assaulting a vice principal.

The defendant, of no fixed address, is standing trial on a three-count charge of breach of peace, assault, and malicious damage.

The Police Prosecutor, Insp Akinwale Oriyomi, told the court that the defendant and others at large, committed the offences on June 1 at about 08:30 a.m. at St. Lawrence Metropolitan College, Basiri, in Ado-Ekiti.

He alleged that the defendant and others at large conducted themselves in a manner likely to cause a breach of peace by invading the office of Bello Toyin, the vice principal, of the school and attacking her.

Oriyomi also alleged that the defendant, the mother of a student in the school, got a complaint from her child, that she was punished by the school management.

Reacting to this, she and others at large invaded the school, assaulted the vice principal and inflicted injuries on her face.

He said that the defendant and others at large maliciously damaged one HP laptop worth N250,000 and one headphone worth N15,000 belonging to the complainant.

According to him, the offences contravene Sections 181, 186 and 363 of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2021.

The prosecutor asked the court for adjournment, to enable him to study the case file and assemble his witnesses.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge preferred against her.

46-year-old Man Arrested After Stabs Motorcyclist For Having Affair With His Wife

The Ogun State Community, Social Orientation and Safety Corps otherwise called So-Safe Corps has arrested Ibrahim Ogunrinde, a 46-year-old resident of Adu Town, Ajebo Road, Mile 6, Abeokuta, for attempted murder.

Fraud: El-Rufai Allegedly Paid N11.8bn Into Private Accounts

The final report of the Kaduna State House of Assembly Adhoc Committee set up to investigate the tenure of ex-Governor Nasir El-Rufai has accused the former governor of several corrupt practices.

In the 175-page report submitted to Governor Uba Sani on Thursday, the lawmakers accuse the ex-governor of syphoning billions of Naira through proxy companies and individuals.

Under “general findings on all MDAs” the lawmakers said the sum of N11.8 billion was paid to the account of two individuals under the guise of a joint venture for the proposed Kaduna light Rail project said to be a public-private partnership arrangement.

The report says the transaction was authorised by the office of the governor and the commissioner for finance in a move described as “possible diversion of funds through individual bank accounts.”

“Per the committee review of Indo Kaduna MRTS JV a joint venture for the proposed Kaduna light Rail project in public-private partnership with Skipper Nig. ltd.

“Funds were transferred to two (2) individual account as follows: Nuren Mumeen Damola; 10,899,300,000 and Uzosike Chinedu 188,380,906.76 11,087,680,906.76,”

Mohbad Death, New Autopsy Report Emerged

A recent investigation into the passing of singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, who was known as Mohbad, gives some clues about why he may have died.

The report says they’re not exactly sure what caused his death, but they think drugs might have played a part, based on tests done after he died.

Doctors at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) did the examination. They took samples from his stomach, blood, bone marrow, liver, kidney, and lung to check for any signs of drugs.

According to TheCable, the doctors also found an injury on Mohbad’s right arm, and his body was starting to decay when they looked at it.

Overall, though, they didn’t find any big problems that could explain why he passed away.”

The toxicology “revealed the positive finding of diphenhydramine, an anti-histamine; however, this concentration was not in a fatal or lethal range”.

The report reads: “Anti-histamines are medicines used to treat symptoms of allergies. They are also used to treat a variety of other conditions such as stomach problems, colds, and anxiety, among others.”

Alleged $600,000 Fraud: “I have never met him Emefiele before, I didn’t Give him Any Bribe For Contract – Witness Tells Court

A prosecution witness, Victor Onyejiuwa, on Friday, told the Lagos State Special Offences Court in Ikeja that the alleged $600,000 he was asked to pay for the contract he executed for the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, was paid to the former apex bank Director of Information Technology, John Ayoh and not to the embattled ex-CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele.

Onyejiuwa who is the Managing Director of Resource Computer Limited, stated this while being cross examined by Emefiele’s lawyer , Mr Olalekan Ojo, SAN.

The witness who stated that all his communication with Ayoh was done via Whatsapp, noted that first bribe payment he made to Ayoh was $400,000, in Lagos and the second payment of $200,000 was made in Abuja.

Onyejiuwa also stated that he didn’t get any letter of authorization from the CBN management that he should pay bribe for the contract that was awarded to his company but that it was Ayoh that signed the award of the contract and the completion.

7 People Feared Dead As Trailer Crushes Mini Buses In Imo State [VIDEO]

A tragic accident occurred on Saturday night in Owerri, the capital of Imo State, when a trailer lost control and collided with three mini-buses, resulting in the deaths of at least seven people.

The incident happened around 7 pm at the Imo State University junction.

Eyewitnesses reported that the heavy-duty truck was driving against traffic when the driver lost control, hitting approximately 20 people in total.

The trailer crashed into three mini-buses, each carrying nine passengers including the drivers, leading to the catastrophic outcome.

Emeka, an eyewitness at the scene, recounted that the mini-buses were hit in quick succession because they were travelling close to one another.

He said the severity of the collision caused significant casualties, with seven victims confirmed dead and their bodies transported to the morgue. Other injured individuals were rushed to the Federal University of Technology Hospital Owerri (FUTHO) for emergency treatment.

The accident caused major gridlock on the busy Okigwe Road as onlookers and relatives of the victims flocked to the scene and the hospital, seeking information about their loved ones.
